I struggle a bit with the concept "work life balance" since it implies that work is necessarily bad for your life - which is obviously not necessarily the case. If you are happy and proud about what you are doing for work, what do you need "work life balance" for? That being said, in many parts of the world I think there is a cultural obsession with work which is not healthy, even if the job is fulfilling and enjoyable. The tragedy is that far too many people are suffering in jobs that don't contribute to their quality of life, perhaps without even having considered the possibility that life could be different.

thank your for being so real and relatable, Michael. Very thoughtful video, much appreciated!
A coach of mine calls them "life areas" that need to be in balance instead of work-live-balance. Live areas can be work, health, family, finances, etc This view does not position work as an opposite of life and also shows other important areas.
I struggle with allowing myself to "slack" and focus on anything but work. So I need to make the focus on other areas an explicit goal. Your suggestion that it can go in intensity phases is a great idea!
Another breakthrough was using the Oura ring. It measures body signals and can give you feedback which days to take it a bit slower.

I was all set to fully retire in Portugal from the UK. After a 18 months or so, I lost my purpose in life. I have dedicated my time to turning my published books into online courses. It has added a certain sense of urgency, adding a challenge and overcoming it. I also enjoy learning how to use the tools involved, such as design and AI tools, and I find it extremely interesting to bring everything together at the publishing stage. Life's spark is back in my life!

This is a really nice video with some very relavant advice for many people. Health and family should be above work most of the time in the priority order, since if you don't have these you will not have a whole life.

That mindset kind of explains why I started getting interested in tax optimisation, too.
My plan has always been to push extra hard, until I can afford to focus on things I enjoy, rather than things that pay the most. Not necessarily retire early - since what I enjoy could also bring in income further down the line, but I wanted to feel safe to change focus for a few years.
And frankly, this idea seems very foreign to whoever came up with the concept of progressive taxation. Spreading your income throughout a longer period of time gets less penalised than bursts of productivity followed by leisure, and I can't help but see this as totally unfair.
Otherwise, I totally agree. The idea of work-life balance is socialist bullpoop, as first of all, it implies that work is anti-life, and second - it forces a top-down single understanding of how it is to be achieved (you are forced to have leisure and work every single day). That's just now how productive people operate.
