Are you using an older Mac, if so what’s your model?
I’m currently using a Hackintosh that has really good specs, but I’m having too many issues with it sadly
MacBook Pro 15" Mid 2012 Unibody
2.7ghz Intel Core i7, 16 GB RAM, 500GB Samsung 860 Pro SSD
Eevnos idk what model I’m using it’s super thick though it might be like 2010 or something like that
i'm using 2009 macbook pro
I got a used Mac from eBay, cost around $500, then did some upgrades. At first, I was thinking about an iMac, but since I wanted to be able to easily switch out the GPU, I went for the 2009 Mac Pro, would be curious to compare the Geekbench score, here is mine ➜ browser.geekbench.com/v4/cpu/10848132
The only reason:
1) It's cheaper
Mr. IDGAF IKR
and it looks the same as the newer models
and its good enough for his needs (mines too mostly musical production)
Def my reason 😂
@@carlitoxb110 P I do music production. Have the same machine/specs. Works very well.
As a tech, I have been reparing macs for 10 years, 2013's are considered still as new! Actually, 2009's and up are still not old, and very capable in every way! 👍
Bryce James agree I still have my 2011 27 inch love it just upgraded the ram from 8g to 16g didn’t see the point of maxing out the ram to 32g
my imac has hardware issues wont load completely someone help
well ty soo much mid 2011 soo um happy to be a new apple user
Bryce James what about the 2011 27’ iMac? I’m thinking of getting one
@@harley2322 Dont do it. GPU and screen are defective.
Well I bought a 2011 iMac in 2019 and I'm really happy with it
ive had he 2011 for over 8 years and still performs like a beast

Dude the older iMacs run like champs! You probably got a great deal!
Hope you don’t have to deal with that dreaded graphics card failure, good luck.
Dalton Rego nobody is poor if they have a Mac lmao
650 bucks won't buy you anything decent new. For your specs that's an awesome deal.
Bro I just brought one for 399 2015
Hitmandj how
This was one of the most helpful videos I saw on the road to finding exactly the same machine to replace my 2007, which is still running my windows stuff and will until I bite the bootcamp bullet on the new one.
Could hardly be happier. Didn't realize what I was missing! Thank you
Draztiq Meshaz Awesome, thanks for letting me know and I’m really happy it helped!
I sold my 2013 in 2017 and I regret it
This is such a good budget find for those looking for money friendly gear. Love finding older tech, that refurb is also a good option as well. Solid video, thanks for updating us to this.
I have a 2012 iMac 27". I have had a 1TB SSD installed. I brought it new speced out. It runs very fast with a 1TB SSD. It used to have a 3TB fusion hard drive.
Fusion drive is faster than an SSD for system running because of the pci connection
"thin edges and bump behind" describes a girl i know hahahahhahaah
Mansah Asare 😂😂😂
hahahaha
I am using a 21.5 inch late 2013 iMac. Works like a charm.
Fun fact my grandmother got this iMac a few years ago still works like a boss!
I have the same one; but I got the basic model and it was super super slow. so what I did is add an external ssd 500g and canceled the internal hard disk and wow wow wow. My Mac is 30x faster and I only spend 80€ and I didn’t have to open anything. It’s as fast as my Mac book pro 2018
@@2011jdmboy That's what I need to do. Can you tell me which make and model of ssd you got? Thanks!
Morbus Samsung MU-PA500R 500 GB
jesus rodriguez how did you do that?
I must admit, that the picture quality you've produce is some of the best i've seen. Thank you for your tutorial.
Maybe he’s poor
I did the same think and i’m super happy about it! Changed to SSD and then maxed out the RAM! The thing just flyes!
Yeah man, just some basic upgrades can make a huge difference!
Nikolay Kolev me too! My mid-2007 got 6GB, a T9500 processor and runs Mojave just fine using the dosdude patcher. In fact all current “unsupported” OS X releases work flawless, except for wifi (Bluetooth still works), I’m not spending $200 CAD for for a natively compatible BT/Wifi module.. price point doesn’t make sence
@@CheeseZombieo I bought a used late 2013 iMac 21,5 inch for like €700. The base model, cause I know some people have had issues with the dedicated Radeon graphic cards. Then I maxed it out to 16 GB 1600 MHz DDR3 RAM and placed a 1TB SSD..and what can I say? My colleague bought an Apple refurbished iMac 21,5 4k of 2017 for like €1500..and well..mine is 20 to 35% faster in pretty much anything...for half the price and an hour of labor.
7:19 because Premiere and Final Cut handle their timelines differently. final cut updates in the backround while editing and premiere only updates when told to save system resources.
I just ordered exactly the same spec machine. Delivery due today! Another advantage of buying the non-5K machine is it supports target display mode, allowing you to use the Mac as a display for a laptop, etc. I’ll be using mine mainly for Lightroom and Photoshop. May have to get an external SSD for the Lightroom catalogue though.
Mark Janes That’s great, sounds like it’ll be a perfect machine for you!
still using my 2013 in 2020 and works brilliantly :)
That's sound like a pretty good deal. I had a mid 2011 iMac that I sold in 2016 after the graphic card went out. It would have cost me over$900 bucks for a new graphic card becasue they had to punch it out of the motherboard. I sold it dead with no harddrive for $565. So getting something working and in great shape for $650 is an awesome deal.
Haha.. isn’t that crazy how much they hold their value even when they’re broken? 😂
Yeah man, I feel like I got a great deal, does everything I want it to do!
so here is probably the best deal ever: iMac late 2013 - nothing wrong other than the small nick on a corner. 8gb memory installed. no HDD/SSD. I paid $100 for it.
Funny that I just bought same one..maxed out too...700$ good deal for me in Japan
I got this same model 2 years ago for free from a friend and I love it. My first computers I had and still have were early Mac LC from the early 90's but for the last 20 years I used PC.s. Glad I got this Mac, too expensive, I never would have bought one myself but so glad I have one now.
How long before the 2013 is obsolete?
I'm using a 2014 Mac mini and it works fine for what I need. Picked my wife up a used 2014 MacBook air, runs great!
You could habe bought her a late 2013 mbp because that air has awful display.
Still use my late 2013 iMac 27 inch with 24GB ram. Still is a beast, really have zero performance issues and I still can't believe how
Absolutely fantastic video, mate! You saved me a good chunk of change with your sound advice (I'll be increasing my RAM instead) and I'll be sticking with my late 2012 iMac for a wee bit longer...keep up the good work and a Happy New Year to you from Scotland!
Thanks so much, I really appreciate the feedback and that you took the time to share your experience!
I'm so glad you found it useful and Happy New Year to you as well!
I have a 2012 that I bought in 2016. Since the beginning of stay at home, it has been the machine I use for connecting to my company’s network and working from home. I like using one 27” monitor better than the dual monitor set up I have at the office.
That is a great computer! The only thing I could suggest different is add Macs Fan Control..... heavy processor leads get a head start on cooling.
Hi! New sub here, and so glad I watched this video this morning, I found your specs to be just what I need! I already have a late 2012 IMac with lower specs and does fine, but, frustrating at times in FCPX when editing. I decided to look for a machine similar to what you got here, and found one on eBay for 555.00 almost exactly what you have except for memory (which is easy to get) and only issue and why this is discounted is someone didn't put the screen back on correctly and is held on with tape. I have watched many videos on how to put new adhesive on and I've ordered a kit off Amazon for 10 bucks, so I am super excited as I love these machines! I see that a lot of them are going for 800 bucks and more, some less, but, I'm super happy with my find. Thank you for this video as it cleared up a lot of questions I was having in my mind. Cheers!
Linda Miller That’s great, I’m really glad you found the video useful and thank you so much for letting me know!
I hope all goes well with your new machine! 😁
Just found your video, but I too just recently returned to Apple after doing the Hackintosh route. I ended up spending more time upgrading the machine and wasting time with updates than I wanted to. Appreciate you breaking down your purchase though
so do you regret it? what was the worst part of it? I'm debating on getting a strong Mac currently I just have the new MacBook for university, but a pc is cheaper to build with more power so they all say but I feel like there is some huge catch to hackintosh that will turn me off
@@db-sj6wz Yes I do. But only because I started using Macs because I loved the fact I spent more time using it and less time upgrading/updating them. I'm a designer, so I don't care about the latest technology, I just want it to work. I don't game on my iMac, so it doesn't need the latest and greatest. So to answer your question, I think it just depends on what you want to do with your machine and how good you are at keeping up with all the latest software/hardware updates required to keep your Hackintosh in good order.
I upgraded the snot out of a 2011 MacBook Pro 13 inch with a 512GB SSD, 16 GB of ram, replaced thermal paste, new fan, and a new battery. It works great on Sierra (High Sierra sucks on this machine)
I have a 2010. Worth upgrading to a 2019 model?
Mine is all pixelated and crashing a lot.
You may not have to upgrade to a brand new one, but you may want to consider a newER model. 😉
2009 27" with c2d @3.06. Bought last year for 200 euros with original keyboard and mouse(what a steal). I upgraded it with 8gb ram and 500 ssd. This this runs just as new and I can edit my photos in it just as easy as I do in my 2014 retina mbp. The display is a dream and I believe any Mac with i5 - i7 is a machine that will last 10 years+.
How much was it
Name game at 4:00m ? Please
I have late-2013 iMac with 3.3Ghz Intel Core-i7, 24GB of RAM, Geforce GTX 780M 4GB and 1TB SSD (damn this was expensive!). It's still a very powerful Mac. I do mainly video editing and my Mac handles 4K-videos. I just wish I had enough time to make a clean install of macOS Mojave. It would probably make the Mac even faster. I'm still running High Sierra...
Hi Maestri, if the machine have the Geforce GTX775 2GB.Is it good enough to edit 4K video? Because I found one on online and thinking want to purchase it plus the price quite reasonable for me. The spec is 3.5Ghz i7 w 24GB of RAM and 512 SSD. I will be doing heavily on motion graphic, video editing and 3d.
I run MacOS Mojave I really like the dark mode
Is it possible to install the Mojave on the iMac 2012 late?
Why do people think new OSes run faster? In nearly all cases they run slower. The single benefit you may get with Mojave is if you format your SSD to AFS, but everything else will be slower because it is simply doing more processing.
Matteo Tunnis I have a late 2012 iMac and Mojave is fine
For the past 15 years, I have only been buying used apple computers and loving it. Not being a power user for myself, the most important thing is that my software programs, computer hardware, and external items are all of the same vintage. This way , I have found that all components work well together. My current desktop is a 2010 mac mini (the last model with a built-in DVD super-drive) with a 27 inch apple cinema (none thunderbolt) display.
This is a great point. One of the biggest mistakes that people make when using old(er) hardware is to upgrade their software. Invariably, something they need becomes unusable, and they find themselves "needing" new hardware. My main work station is a 2012 Macbook Pro/Thunderbolt display combo that I bought new in 2013. The thing is still every bit as fast as it was when new because I'm still using Mavericks and Adobe CS6. I have no intention of upgrading that software until I decide to upgrade the hardware first.
The point you make about software is an excellent one. Right after coming home with my 2010 mac mini, I had planned to upgrade the operating system to OS X 10.8 (Mountain Lion). But quickly learned that if, I went past OS X 10.6 (Snow Leopard) there would be no more Front Row (to have fun with my apple remote control) and Rosetta to be able to run OS X Power PC programs (i.e. Apple Works). In addition, after picking up on Ebay a retail version of apple's own Aperture software learned it also will not work with newer versions of the OS X operating system.
this has 3840 by 2160 for 4k videos?
It's a fantastic machine. That's why.
I purchased this exact machine (same specs) when it came out in late 2013. Still running beautifully to this day. I expect it to suit my needs for another 24 months. Hopefully, there will an iMac redesign by then.
Just a reminder, the RAM is user-upgradeable. So that might come in handy if you find a used version with less RAM when you are bargain hunting.
Also, the current trade-in offer for this machine with Apple is $400. So that info might help you when you are haggling.
Thanks for a great vid!
Apologies, mine has an SSD. I think that is an important distinction when picking one of these up.
I just purchased a 27 late 2014 I7 4 Ghz 32g- 3TB fusion drive 15,1. It's awesome!
Awesome, sounds like a great machine!
Does this 2013 iMac come with Logic Pro 9 version 9.1.8? Great video...thanks
Great video i was torn between getting a used imac 2011-2012 but i you convinced me to get a 2013 instead. Time to find a good deal like you did!
Just be patient and prepared to haggle. 😉
Excellent choice of Mac, with great features. Personally, I strongly prefer an internal SSD over Hybrid.
Yeah, a straight up SSD is definitely faster, but it's a paint to upgrade on iMacs. 😉
That looks sleek! I would love for my editing to be that smooth
Yeah man, I am absolutely loving this machine!
Thanks for checking it out and commenting!
I just bought one. I’m having a hard time connecting the wireless mouse and keyboard. I cant do anything. Any suggestions?
I still use a mid-2010 iMac.
Nice!
Bought a late 2013 21,5" with i7 processor in december 2013. Stil Happy with it since i peeled off the screen and double the ram to 16Gbyte and it is flying again. (8 Gbyte was too little since Sierra) . Gonna pop in a pcie 1TB flash too because I'm still on rotating disc. Crucial P1+sintech adapter.
Yeah, the RAM and then upgrading the storage will make a HUGE difference, like a new machine. 😀
Is there not a RAM upgrade bay at the back of the iMac?
@@micronesia3797 Not on the 21", there is on the 27" though.
use external SSD is ok !
I have the same iMac upgraded it as well to an ssd from the fusion drive. It was super fast originally now its a complete animal. Best mac i ever owned. Had a few this is my favorite machine. 14,2 model 32gb ram - 2Tb ssd now. Worth the upgrade. If you don’t upgrade you will still have a great mac.
still rocking my late 11 MBP. no need to upgrade.
Sweet!
I really admire how you think. I just need something faster than my 2011macbok pro. I use the adobe programs and browse the internet. that's it. I do not want to spend over $1000
I had the same issue with my 2011 MacBook Pro as you're having ... so slow. I upgraded the memory to 16Gb and changed my old HDD to an SSD (did it all myself ... there's many great tutorials on youtube) and the results were incredible. It boots up in a third of the time and applications open much quicker, no lag anywhere. Give it some thought, I'm glad I kept mine.
@@dennishorne1220 I did that as well, spent under $200 for the memory, ssd, new battery, and I removed the optical drive..Thank heavens for youtube!!! saved me
I have a 2015 Mac it works like a beast
I have the same machine. I bought it 4 years ago for $1500. All options high and to the right with a 1tb SSD. I stole it...the girl had bought it for her dad and he was a PC guy and he couldn’t make the change. I often stop into Mac stores and fiddle with their new machines although faster not $4000 faster. I continue to be happy with it. I edit all my Panasonic and Sony 4K without much issue. Drop noise reduction on a clip and it’s gridlock but that’s the same issue even on modern machines. Thanks for the vid!
Thanks for the comment, I appreciate it!
I agree, for day to day performance the cost isn't justified for the new machines.
Other, than basic stuff there's definitely a difference but depending on what you do it still may not be enough of a difference. 😉
I'm a firm believer in getting the machine that fits your needs that's also within your budget and these are a great option for most people!
I just bought a late 2013 21.5 iMac:
Price = $650
Quad core 2.7ghz i5
16GB Ram
1 TB SSD
How was it????
dan1 verx AMAZING money well spent! It looks stunning and the display is crisp and has great viewing angles, not as good as the 4K and 5k displays but still great! It handles everyday tasks like the web, spreadsheets and emails, messages etc. It goes through adobe photoshop and illustrator like a champ I haven’t experienced any kind of slow down. It goes through and edits Final Cut Pro 1080p videos amazingly like a breeze, it extremely fast with final cut and Logic Pro, I haven’t had a single slow down. When you start editing 4K the gpu just can’t handle the workload as well, so it starts to slow down, you can do simple 4K editing but not advanced. I will defiantly be buying an egpu.
mid 2011 imac with 16gb of RAM, 500gb SSD
I bought my first Mac ever a few months ago, a 2012 21.5 inch IMac. Got it for $280. It’s pretty awesome.
I just happen to be watching this on my iMac that is identical to yours, other than the 3TB Fusion drive. I put a 500GB Samsung SSD in mine. I LOVE THIS MAC! The benchmark scores are right up there with the newer Macs that have the i5 processor, which really shocked me. I'm am disappointed to hear you say that Premiere doesn't run well, as I have an Adobe subscription. I wanted to use it this summer. Oh well. Great choice for a used Mac for sure! It sure does beat forking out all that dough for a new Mac!
Jeremy Carter you could maybe get an older version of premiere it might run a bit better.
Would u recommend this for music production
Just bought my first ever Mac! Got a heck of a deal on it.
It's a 2017 21.5" iMac; Core i5, Radeon Pro 555 w/ 2gb VRAM, 16gb DDR4 RAM, 256gb SSD. Will definitely be upgrading to a 1tb SSD soon though. :)
Herbie Follin price?
I've recently bought my sisters imac (2013) for £300. First time ever owning a mac of any kind
How do you like it so far?
The two big points I'd recommend for buying older iMacs though are 1 make sure it has the upgradable RAM slot. Don't restrict yourself and get something with RAM soldered in unless it's something with 16 or 32GB of RAM and you aren't doing something overly intensive. You can really get by editing 4k with 8GB of RAM, but leaving the ability to upgrade RAM will give you options in the long run though.
Number 2 is definitely look for SSDs over Fusion drives. Fusion drives are ok with some things but they aren't great in other areas. 3TB Fusion Drive will last awhile but once you hit over about 50% full on them they tend to slow down a ton. From my research a fusion drive is a 128GB SSD that works in combination with a traditional HDD to transfer the most used things to the SSD. Honestly I think Apple probably just did it to made the transition to SSDs from HDD longer as a HDD as HDD are like ¼ the price at least.
The other issue with Fusion drives is if it is the original fusion drive from 2013 that's a 6 year old and counting HDD you're relying on for all your data, which probably isn't the most reliable option out there.
Great points!
I agree on the hard drive, in fact I don't really trust any hard drive so I back up everything regularly.
Props to Apple for Time Machine! 😉
Time may have moved on much more but it’s 2023 and I’ve just bought the same spec iMac used in UK for £120
It’ll still do everything I need it to do recording & producing my band’s music and music videos, yeh it’ll be slower than higher spec newer machines but for a huge fraction of the price to a new or newer used high spec machine, bargain for what you get if you’re happy for things processing a bit longer, im not in that much of a rush so it’ll do me.
Last year I updated from a early 2009 24" iMac to a late 2015 27" 5K model, 4ghz i7, 32gb ddr3, R9 m395x 4gb and 1 tb ssd. I found this at a 5 minute drive for €2000 ($2250). We use it for sketch up, Vectorworks, VM for SQL, VBA,.... And some minnor games Civ 5o r 6, cities,... All works great!
At the moment I'm working a lot on a NAS, to use as a central storage for both computers at home. I hope a fresh install of Mojave gives me a little bit more performance. Anybody with experience about this?
Edit: I still have the 2009, I want to instal a 64bit linux on it, it's a project for april when I have some more time.
There are some good guides to install Linux Mint on Macs, and you will want to use 'refind' for the boot manager. Reply here if you need more assistance
I got a 2009 iMac and I change hard drive to SSD and put 16 GB memory in it. Now it´s much faster then my 2018 iMac.
Whats that game at 04:30?
We use the same ones in school I like them a lot runs photoshop and video editors smoothly
Excellent! It's amazing how good they still are!
2011 Macbook Pro 15in intel I7 2.2 Ghz, 8gb Ram, 500GB SSD
I bought a 2013 27" iMac new. My wife knocked it over last year and broke the glass.
So I bought another one off ebay. Super clean. Better spec too. 3.4 GHz Intel Core i5. Upped the ram to 32Gb.
I now boot from an external 2T Samsung T7 SSD and use the internal HHD for Time Machine backups.
30 second boot time. Photoshop opens in 3 seconds. Same with Illustrator.
Nary a beachball to be seen. Strong machine!
I have almost same machine and I'm really happy with it!
I have a late 2013 i5, 8GB 1TB wGTX 750 that I swapped out the terrible mechanical hard drive and put a Samsung 1TB SSD . Very usable now !
Thank you for the information. I am a professional sound mixer for film and TV and I do a lot of work for short Films I just wanted to make a suggestion that you need to either turn the music off when you’re talking or turn it down really really low or choose music that doesn’t have so much going on. The effect is it makes it sound like you were shouting and so it distracts from the content of what you’re trying to present. I appreciate the information and the video. Good luck! PS, do you have any issues with bottlenecking data when you’re editing at 4K as the input ports are thunderbolt one? New SSD drives that will allow you to have data transfer speeds to edit multiple streams in 4K are usually thunderbolt three. Just curious
Is it good enough for Adobe premiere Pro?
Is this 27” or 21” ? Thanks 🙏
I got a used 2013 iMac for a really good deal as well. Its an intel core i5 with, 32 GB ram and NVIDIA GeForce GTX 775M 2048 MB and doesn't have the storage that yours has, but I use external drives for that. It works great. I've mixed the sound for two short films on it so far using Adobe Audition. Yes, I'm a Premiere guy, because that's what I've had access to, coming from a career and background in Graphic Design. But I also look forward to using DaVinci on this machine as soon I get more familiar with it. Before this I was using a 2012 Mac Mini with 16 GB of Ram. That machine was great too for what it was, I only had issues when trying to play back Premiere with an adjustment layer containing a LUT.
I agree with your reasoning. I did the same thing when i purchased my 2012 MacBook Pro.
I got this yesterday: iMac 27” 2013 | i7 3.5Ghz | 32GB RAM | 780M 4GB | 1TB SSD 860 Pro | STUDIO
Nice!
Got a 4k imac few years back for £850, haven't really used it to full potential, but i love imacs.
Is this late 2013 model design similar to the latest imac?
I have a late 2013 Mac same as yours it came with 4GB ram and says its upgrade a ball to aids I'm wondering if I can put more and then that
On my late 2009 fully loaded. Can't do video editing at a sane speed, can't render cgi video, but it works well for drawing 3d. It's worth a couple hundred and is more power than most users will ever use.
Yeah, for the average user that just wants a basic machine those would still work great!
I've squeezed this thing way beyond the $2,500 I spent new. It does some pretty good rendering, but it just takes too long to be practical.

@@roachclip_4078 Oh no doubt man, the longevity of these machines I fantastic!

but how do you screen record using one???
can I ask why you didn't go for SSD?
I found a cheaper option, Late 27inch 2013, i5 3.4ghz with a Geforce 775M was wondering if that was still a good buy for editing on FCPX
Yes, that machine should run FCPX just fine.
It's really an asset. I use fcpx and export times are really decent
You really want an i7 for editing. IMHO
Why Me will a i7 3.1ghz work?
@@bigsaccs Yeah man, should be good. i7's handle multi threading much better
How do you work around not having thunderbolt 3?
Mine is 2013 but it’s very slow .. any help appreciated please ...
Does an SSD make a difference if you never turn your Mac off? And does it make sense to get a used iMac over a new one if you’re just going to be doing basic stuff like web browsing, emails, listening to music,TH-cam,writing,social media, watching movies, light photo editing, and very light gaming? I have an iPad but I just want a bigger screen sometimes. And the ability to do light gaming on steam.
For your use I would definitely get a used one.
The SSD improves more than just boot, the apps will launch faster and any application the utilizes a lot of reading and writing to the desk will improve as well.
Eevnos Ok thanks for answering my question.
Does It still present a solid performance? Thanks.
I have a very similar machine, and in Mac OS X Mavericks... yes it's great performance! However I have heard these older computers don't work as well when updating the OS, so I haven't and have a new Macbook Pro for that. Newer products aren't as good with legacy software, but better for newer tech standards; depends what you're doing.
oh.... its an i5 Processor only clocking in at 2.7GHZ but works almost to my audio needs...may need a 32 gig Ram Boost soon though))
I'm using a late 2014 iMac 5k. When I bought it in the end of 2014 I was really torn between getting the 5k + AMD card vs. what you bought, the 2013 + Nvidia card. I still sorta wish I picked that 2013. The reason, I game in bootcamp and have to use 1440p, I think it would look better in native 1440p vs. the 5k scaling. Plus, the card in your iMac is better than the R9 in my opinion. Other than that, I love the 5k screen for everything else and since I work on the 5k 40+ hours a week, it's not a terrible sacrifice.
Totally my problem now,im going to buy imac but confused with all the models.im an illustrator
@@lova368 All I can really suggest is to buy the model with the best graphics card available and go with the 27 inch. The iMac isn't really upgradable later (other than RAM ) so getting the best graphics card now will future proof and truthfully Mac graphics cards have never been very impressive, so getting the best available isn't overkill. I've owned both 21.5 and 27 inch, the 27 inch has so much more screen real estate, enough that a 2nd monitor is really just luxury and not a necessity like the 21.5 imho. The entry level processor is usually pretty good, and I've haven't felt like a processor slowed down any of my Macs faster than Core 2 Duo (meaning I3, I5, I7, all of those processors have felt quick, never left me wanting on a Macbook pro or iMac) Personally, 16gb of RAM has been plenty for me, just enough to infrequently run virtual machines without issue, although if I ran virtual machines regularly I'd probably double that or if I did a lot of video work. Last thing, the hard drive. The fusion drive is quick, I have the early version, 128gb SSD paired with 1TB HDD and it's quick, but if I had it to do over, I'd get a 256 or 512 SSD since I use Thunderbolt drives for photos, video, & other OS's. I think you can only get the 128gb SSD with the 3TB fusion drive now, so that's a consideration, but my main point is the fusion drive works pretty darn well, the software running it is typical Apple, very smart. Best a luck!
Most imac look the same from 2011-2019
No from 2012 were all same but 2011 was fat
I have a late 2012 27” iMac, model: 13,2. Works great.
I have a 2013 iMac that was top of the line when I bought it. I future proofed it when I bought it. Still runs great though I had to replace the hard drive last summer. Mine had the 3TB fusion drive and apple has had some issues with it. I have a 2TB SSD in it now. That fusion drive may be on borrowed time.
Dude, a 2TB SSD, that's a nice upgrade!
I only got rid of my iMac yesterday, it was a mid 2012 and pretty high spec, but it was starting to show its age. Especially the fact that it cannot get the Mojave update. I still after all those years got a very good price for the machine.
Only difference between this and the newer models is the newer ones will get more updates and support. Basically not much, if anything, has changed in the perfectly acceptable spec tier of imacs. It kinda sucks really and I personally think the 2012/2013 iMac should ha e support for at least 10 years but that's just me. Tbh buying new computers is so fucking over the planet and repair businesses, all I had to do to breathe life into my old mac was install an SSD and some better RAM.
Zachary Law I agree with this for certain workflows.
Workflows that take advantage of the newer architecture and faster graphics have a significant bump with newer machines.
For the average user though, or less intensive workflows, I agree that there’s very little to be gained by the newer machines.

Yeah, but the 2012/13 spec is perfectly acceptable for many like me, as a music producer, who mostly don't really need superfluous speeds, etc. It's just that the support is kind of a kick in the teeth. But I suppose it isn't necessary that big of a deal to some extent.
3:29 "and the 1440p display is absolutely beautiful in this machine"
This is until you see a 5k Retina iMac and then the 1440p display looks like shit.
Only if you look at them side by side, which probably won't happen. 😉
I have the 5K one... after a year it developed image retention issues and it seems to be the case with every 5K iMac since 2015 :/
@@DanEvansn does the retention/burn in persist after quite sometime? there are reports saying the burn apparently gone in minutes ( but also comeback in minutes ), i think the 5k 2014 one also affected by this issue, im thinking about buying one but these issues keep me thinking
I am still using a 2013 iMac. Still works ok. I tried out the new MacPro the other day. Wow. the reposes time is just instant. I will probably try to get another year out of this one and then think about upgrading.
Found a used 27'' iMac from late 2013 for 500 bucks. Do you reckon it's a good deal?
Specs:
3,2 GHz Quad-Core Intel i5
8 GB 1600 MHz DDR3
NVIDIA GeForce GTX 675MX 1 GB
1 TB hdd
Sounds like a decent deal.
I'm presently happy with my Late 2012 iMac 27 inch for musical production. 32 GB. Logic Pro X and Pro Tools .
Sweet, nice setup!
On the Ebay page, it says 128gbssd - 1tb. Im confused can someone explain to me what that means because the description of the video says it had 3tb. Thank you.
xesthetix It was an upgrade option at time of purchase.
Actually, 256GB was the lowest configurable SSD at the time - I own one of these myself. The 3TB Fusion drive listed here mates (ie. fuses") a 128GB SSD to a large HDD.
Take A Shot everytime when he says "MACHINE" 😂
I got so drunk!
JUST purchased for $510 in 2020: Late 2013 27” iMac, 3.5ghz, 1tb hdd, 16gb ram, and MOST importantly nVidia GTX 780M 4gb. Upgrading to 32gb ram. Adding 1tb ssd via pcie as primary drive, while holding the 1tb hdd as secondary drive. Amateur 4K video editing and Fortnite run buttery🧈 smooth! Total price on setup: ~$650
Sweet!
They’re still amazing machines, especially with those updates!
Late 2012 Mac Mini with a swapped in SSD and 8GB. I got it in 2019 for less than $300. Works great.
hisownfool1
I JUST bought the same machine last week :)
I have a late 2013 macbook pro i7 attached up to a 27" display. I'd rather have the iMac though since I hate having all these space taken up on my desk with the imac and the display.
Yeah, it is definitely a nice space saver.
All-in-one with one single cable (power) running to the machine!
Although with your setup you have the advantage of portability with the MBP. 😉
true.. but I can do just as much on the go with my ipad air2 or lenovo t450s. I don't do a lot of editing away from home, but I can use imovie on the ipad if I needed too. Though I do need a lightning to USB cable to plug my Yeti mic into.
