[Slimekeep Devlog #35]
In this video I made a full blown casino for Slimekeep. I know this probably wasn't asked for, but I had a great time making it. I also added some other neat additions such as player skins and a few alternate corridors to the game.
About me:
Hey, I'm BenBonk, an indie game developer who uses the Unity Engine. I've made and released many small games before on my itch page, though now I'm attempting to make my first commercial game, Slimekeep. Slimekeep is a roguelike, using a very limited color palette, similar to Enter the Gungeon, though with a few interesting mechanics, such as keeping slimes alive longer will earn you more money, and the ability to capture slimes to power up your slime pet. This is a really cool update! I was thinking, what if you made the casino wheels spin a bit faster and make them appear one by one to give it more of a near miss feel.

Great video, honestly I would have the hats drop straight after battle. You could make a hat rack in the house so its like a trophy case when the player isnt wearing them, it shows off their accomplishments and is a reward.

Hey, just an idea:
You should make it so that after the player has won a certain amount more than they've lost, the casino kicks them out so that people can't get super lucky and ruin game progression.
I know personally I would farm this for millions

There's two things that I will always love in a game for no explainable reason: caves behind waterfalls and gambling. I have absolutely no idea why, but those are always a plus in my book. Bonus points if the gambling is more than just a slot machine with no player interaction.
The game is looking really cool. But one addition I think would be good is having a boss that appears if you win too much in the casino.

I think a king card would be cool for the slimejack game as a rare but either a big win or big lose card
i'll have a fun time gambl- playing definitely legal games for a small chance to win coins :)
I think it's more important to make a fun game than a big game, so I think it's good that you're adding smaller more interesting things like the Casino.
Maybe you can make a slime with a mushroom on its head that sends out spores to slow you down
a lot of really cool features, lots of progress here!!

for the slimejack game, i think it would be cool if the ai would take more of a risk as it goes second, for example, if you have an 18 and the ai goes and gets a 17, it would stop and you would win by the current logic, but you could implement a feature where if the value of the ai's cards is over 16, but still under the player's value, then if would keep flipping cards untill it went over the players score, or lost. maybe you could only implement this feature for larger bets, therefore increasing the risk even more? just an idea. loving the game so far

I can’t belabor we have yet to see… slime hats. Tsk tsk tsk… I wanted to see a tiny slime king hat on the pet 😭
Imo there should be a lever on the left in the screen that pops up when you interact with the slot machine and then the animation would begin when you pull the lever. It would make the machine even more satisfying and fun to use. Just a little thing that you could add, the casino looks awesome even without it!
I recomend you change the pivot points of those targets and memory thingies to the bottom so that the appear animation will look better! What you could also do is use a shader and make it so that they appear from the ground (you change the sprite moves higher up (leaving the ground), and a part of the sprite is under a defined position that part gets hidden (I hope you understand what I mean xD))
for the boss-related hats, you can make them unlock if you beat the respective boss without taking dmg. the other skins (and future ones) could be unlocked for just completing other tasks such as getting a high roll on the lottery or beating the final boss.
Finally done with binge-watching the slimekeep-series!
There should be a rare room that can spawn as part of the random room generation that has no slimes, but has some flowers in colours other than blue. It would be a cool special room where you see something other than green.
I commented this on the last video but no one really saw it so I’ll try again here.
I think that when the slime pet goes through doors, like a 7:46, it looks really weird because it looks like they jump under the door which just looks wrong in my opinion. Instead you could make a cat flap thing in the door for them to go through or have them jump over the door with a special animation because at the moment I think it really just looks really odd.
Other than that the game looks really cool.
Also speaking of the slime pet could they maybe get skins as well? Maybe a little cape or something?

Really cool! Maybe you could add some animations for when the cards in the casino are turned over, they look kinda lame right now. Skins could maybe be unlocked by finding wardrobes randomly scattered around the world or something… just some suggestions

If you have different skins how does it work at the end of the game when it becomes full colour and what about the ending "cutscene".
Devtip: I've stopped counting. Personality Is a key factor to games. Don't get me wrong this game has tons of great personality, and I love the GB design but there nothing to get really attached to in this game. I know Enter the gungeon is like the golden standard of the Roguelike industry, But I'm gonna use it here anyways. In ETG Every Character has a motive, backstories, something to get you really invested and not to bash anything here a simple story can work well with certain scenarios, but the only motive is a more generic save your kingdom here. Even something as simple as a sidequest can help with a game. Also you made me want to open up my old DS and gamble with luigi, DARN IT

If you add any more bosses then you should make a bigger boss like a slime lord or you could add a demon slime dimension if you last for long enough but these are just suggestions ❤love❤ your vids lol!!

What about some extra cool skins with different animations than the normal ones. Might take a few more days to implement but would be cool to see different animations for other characthers?

I was thinking while watching this. at the end where you do the skins. couldn't you over lay the skins and if the skin changes the player model you could then make new sprites. if you know what mean.
i love when gambling gets implemented into video games
For the slots you should have a delay in when the sepererate reels start and stop spinning and for when they stop let them bob a little i feel itll give a more authentic slot feel. Not needed but just a suggestion

hi its just so cool game, but how do you want to give players the crown hat if when you beet the slime king you erase all data from the current save?
It would be cool to be able to play chess in the casino, with all the pieces being replaced by slimes! I know, chess isn't gambling but I'd love to see that.

Amazing! Maybe you should add some new color schemes - for people who are turned off by the solid green, maybe give the option to change the color of the UI, background, level, and enemies seperately for more customisation

I think it would be cool if the first spin on the machine in each room was actually more likely to win, maybe like first spin is profitable on average, second spin equal, every spin after unprofitable.

I think it would look good for the interact system if you had a square looking UI that the interact button would be in for example if you interact with your bed, but when you get farther from the bed the E symbol would simply disappear

Roulette odds are favouring the house because of the number 0. You can bet on 0, but it is neither considered an even or odd number. No need to fiddle with the payout ratio.

Thanks! And not really, they might spend 5-10 minutes tops there per run. It’s more just meant to be a small and fun break from the game and not anything major.
