I am Indian by birth and reside outside US. We speak Tamil at home. I love the Srilankan National Anthem and keep listening to it multiple times. It sounds so melodious and there is so much similarity with Indian, Bangladesh and Srilankan National anthems. Sinhalese language appears to have a lot of Sanskrit influence. Wish the Srilankans the very best in their lives.
Ravi Raghavan Because all three National Anthem were written by great Rabindranath Tagore. Rabindranath Tagore composed National Anthem of India and Bangladesh. However, he also wrote one song for Srilanka which was written in Bengali. One Srilankan student came to Viswavarati, Shantiniketan and translated to Singhalyan language. Previously until then British national anthem was sung.

You are correct. It is totally composed in Sinhalese laguage. Ananda Samarakoon got inspired by Rabindranath Tagore when he was in India for study. See below

see everything is written in wikipedia, (I have mentioned in previous chat) and whole world know the truth. there is no harm if some one got inspired by one Nobel laureate poet from different country. Even Bangladesh National Anthem was written by him. I do not understand why you got so angry? Are you feeling yourself inferior? That's why you have so much ego. Yes :) That's because some words & terms that has been used in our anthem is having commonalities with the Sanskrit. Some words are directly from Sanskrit. It's associated with cultural bonds as you have very correctly mentioned.

first off, i did not know Sri Lanka's National Anthem was influenced by Kavi-Guru Tagore. Whether it is true or not, this is my first time listening to Lankan anthem.. the moment i heard it, i loved it. Bengali cultured blessed with numerous poets, writers, and philosophers. Out of them, two great poets are like 2 gigantic pillars of Bengali culture: Vidrohi Kavi (rebel poet) Nazrul and Bishwa Kabi (universal poet) Rabindranath. Their poems can mesmerize you , can soothe your heart. When your heart bleeds, their words work like ointment. These two are long gone, but they will remain in our sky and will be shining brightly for long time for sure. Greeting and best wishes for our Sri Lankan brothers from Bangladesh.

Mr. Adnan Chy..Whilst appreciating your words and agreeing wholeheartedly on your description on the beauty and the richness of great Bengali literature and culture, I would like to mention that our national anthem was not influenced by great Tagore or his work. This was written and composed by one of our own music maestros late Mr. Ananda Samarakoon. He may have learned under Tagore but it was his original work. This is a misconception that has been even published in some papers and books.

Yes, Sri Lankan women do wear sarees for special/formal occasions, but Sri Lankan women also have their own version of saree called 'Osari' in Sinhalese or 'Kandiyan' in English. It's quite similar to a saree, but as saree being one piece of long cloth, Osari has 3 parts, the bottom part (which is a long piece of cloth like saree), the shawl (or pallu like you guys call it) and then the frill around the waist. Hope this helps, sorry about the long essay 😀
