Excellent video. I'm on the medtronic 780g system and absolutely love it. My Hb1c have improved dramatically. The system benefits me physically and more importantly mentally. Thanks so much for these videos. I was diagnosed this year at 40 years old and your channel has really helped me navigate type 1 diabetes. Just started on the TSlim and have had a very similar experience to what you described in this video.
Thanks so much for this video. I've had diabetes for 47 years and was one of the first patients to use an insulin pump (the size of a video tape, weighed over a pound, and used a 9 volt battery). I switched to a Minimed pump when they became available and stayed on the Medtronic brand for many years until the Omnipod tubeless insulin delivery system came out. I love the fact that the Omnipod is tubeless, small, and waterproof. Sadly, the Omnipod5 and the Dash are now prescription devices as opposed to a durable medical equipment device; my insurance will not pay for them. I was looking at the Tandem slim X2 & Control IQ vs. the Minimed 780G for tighter, more consistent glucose control. Your video has me leaning toward the Tandem and I thank you so much for taking the time for a very thorough review.
Tandem Diabetes! We absolutely love your new Control-IQ system! You have already made a giant leap from US to Czech Republic 🙂 Why not to do a few extra miles to the North and make a lot of members of the Polish diabetic community happy by making it available also on the Polish market???
Hi Tom, I love your work, but if I may add in regards to A1c it’s higher bc it’s the average of past 3 months, and 50% of the value is from the 30d prior. Having said that, it’s the average of highs and lows and since you are having less lows you are having better TIR, will translate in higher A1c slightly.
Thank you. My mother is going to be getting this pump soon. She went into dka in November and is still recovering. It did a little brain damage so she's having a harder time concentrating and figuring things out. She recently got the Dexcom G7. She needs something simple that is easy to use as she gets confused very easily by technology. She's been using Novelin 70/30 insulin since the 1980s but after the dka incident, it hasn't been working well for her. Her sugar either goes too high or too low. Lately its been too low. I'm hoping this will help her.
I have been a type 1 for 50 years. I find that the algorithm works if you are not extremely insulin resistance and are able to find an infusion area that isn't ravaged by 50 years of needles. The night time setting works great, but tries to get you too low. 94 is different from one person to the next. I have a very good A1C of 6.9, but I have had Minimed pumps for 26 years previously and always maintained about the same. If you are young, strong and not wrecked with scar tissue it would be perfect. I am coming up on 1 year with the Tandem, so I will give it more time and see how I can do.
Hi Tom and thanks for all of your great advice. I love you and diabetesstrong as my go-to people for sound experiential help. Now, I am t1d for just over a year, age 57 diagnosed. Already a 30 year runner/walker/exerciser and big water drinker, which helps me. Well my endo put me on pump one month ago - t:slim x2. Still having lows at 1.5 mile superfast walk (4-6 miles 6 days or 7 per week and 2 days free weights double split routine). They don;t want me using temp rate for exercise or any bolus not related to carbs eaten. So, I struggled mightily at first with insertion sites and a few bent cannulas and it coming off, but now can do that fine, with exception of bubbles sometime. But I get “sensor not connected” warnings in middle of the night. Side sleeper lots of tossing and turning, and tslim inside pillowcase of leg pillow. I still seem to be worrying too much about this restrictive device. Blood sugars are fine they say (predictive of 6.8 a1c), but the over 200 ups, like right now after heavy exercise and 28 carb breakfast and no bolus for 16 carb Kind bar eaten during walk, upset me. Also the weight of the tslim and having to carry phone. I enjoyed my libre and so much miss my tresiba 10 units once a day plus mealtime humalog and the freedom of being lightweight and not weighed down by all these diabetes reminders. I could read libre graphs easier and loved to make comments tied to exact blood sugar while out exercising. My mom loves an hour away and lost her husband Christmas eve, so I need to go help her at random times and fear something happening with infusion set. I do not feel like travelling with a suitcase of insulin and all the stuff. How easy grabbing pens would be. Plus diabetesstrong has me interested in inpen. I am sorry to not love this and might love it in the future. But may I ask, as my alarms are sounding for high sugar every day this time with wild highs and lows compared to tresiba and humalog pens, how long do I need to give this a try to be fair to the process? They have tweaked my basal and ratios 3 times in the month and contrary to others, I am using more insulin per day than I did on pens. I have always felt that i use up humalog pretty fast, just a sense, and that tresiba only lasts about 24 hours in me. I eat same basic three meals, no snacks each day for the past year. And so, sorry for the length of this, but how long until I go back to pens? My endo team will support me and not be mad if it does not work, I feel and since I talk with them frequently they know I have and am struggling with rollercoaster sugar that averages okay, but feels horrible, versus more smooth libre and pens. Do some people just not like the tubes and constant reminder? I would love to sleep with only gcm which is my favorite of anything ever regarding diabetes - a true lifesaver for me. Thanks for any help and personal experience and advice.
Hello my friend! Thank you for your kind words! I really appreciate you sharing all the details and sharing very specific info. I would probably give it 3-6 months before I'd give up on the control IQ. Hallo The information you provided about the Tandem insulin pump was great and very useful, but you didn't mention how long does the pump battery charge last if it was charged to 100%?
Switching too tandem in 2 weeks and g7, been on pens 10 year but just started getting real good control woth my pens. I mean like over 90% in range so I'm real nervous going from 2 insulin too 1 which will throw me out until i get use too it all.
how many freestyle libre 2 sensors do you think you tipically found faulty per year ? i for example have ve been using fs2 for the past 4 months, so 9 sensors total, out of which 4 were from the same batch and were all at least 30% wrong all the time vs glucometer, and another 1 that kept reading very scattered values so i took it off after 1 week btw, thank you for the time and effort you put into this vid also
It's about time for me to upgrade my older insulin pump and CGM so I've been watching a bunch of your videos and found them REALLY helpful! Thank you very much for creating all of this terrific content! For Control IQ, is there any sort of "warm up" period needed after enabling it? Basically, I'm wondering how quickly I can switch back and forth between manual mode and Control IQ. I seem to recall that with early versions of the Medtronic auto-pilot algorithms if you needed to switch to manual mode (say, because you ate but forgot to bolus) it took quite a while before the auto mode would be usable again. Those initial experiences (and frustrations) are why I continue to manage my insulin pump manually.
Hello and thanks for the video. I’d be grateful for your opinion on whether I should go for the tandem x2 or the omnipod dash, as I’ve the choice of either imminently. The benefit of not having to worry about tubing speaks for itself, however I (like you) have always struggled with optimising my time in range and feel that the closed loop system offered by the tandem can’t be ignored in that respect. There are plans in the pipeline for a stand-alone closed loop system for the omnipod dash (tide pool loop) but this seems still a way off.
Hi Karim. Thank you so much for your note! I have not personally used Omnipod and I love Tandem so I am probably not in a position to give you an objective and balanced response. However, my observation has been that younger folks (let's say +/-
My cgm g6, can be sketchy and I’m getting ready to start tandem. This is my main concern, how will this work in the face of irregular readings? Thank you for the informative video.
The Tandem pump relies on the information it gets from the Dexcom to make its medicating decisions. I have had a few sensors that did not work very well in the year plus with the Tandem pump. And it will affect the pumps dosing decisions. Usually a defective sensor shows it is having problems within 12 hours of insertion. I was made aware of inaccurate readings by the sensor quickly going from steady, straight arrow, to very quickly going to a rapid up or down arrow readings, with even a sensor error displayed at times. Alarms can be set for these rapid changes so you are made aware of a possible sensor problem and can monitor it, and make the decision to change the sensor if that is the issue. I have not had a case where I needed outside and/or medical attention as a result. The best we have at the moment and definitely, without question, ever go back to finger sticks and needle injections.
My question is whether Tslim 2 allows different carb ratios at different times of the day? I am VERY insulin sensitive during the 4-8 pm period and very INSENSITIVE from 4-10 am
Another great video. Thanks !!! I'm sold on it for my son. Can I ask how much it costs in your part of the world? Hoping Australia won't be too much more! He's just recovering from Covid and BGL levels were insane. He's ten so can't be vaccinated until next month. It got him before the vaccine unfortunately . Just thinking this would have helped a lot!
Mine is almost fully covered by my insurance. I think the price depends very much on the specific country and insurance coverage. Hope this helps. Wishing you son fast recovery!
On this would you be able to program it for set times for exercise? For example, set a time for recess for my son, sort of like how you set a time for bedtime.
Hypos at sleep time 😓😓😓 Almost all of us need this pump for this reason. Thanks for your efforts in recording great videos causing you to get high BS, really thanks and wish you can avoid it 🙏 🙏♥️
I cannot give you an answer to your question. But from what I've seen in other comments on various channels, the pump and algorithm seem pretty good but it's Medtronics CGM that is a very weak link to/for the pump. As they say: Garbage in, garbage out. IMHO
I do not have personal experience with 780G but after having used a Tandem pump i would not go back to Medtronic to be honest. Maybe this gives you an indication:)
I only ask because my wife recently got a Medtronic. I think we would agree the sensors aren't as good - the Freestyle 2 is our only comparison. She didn't get the Tandem because control IQ wasn't available in this country. Of course they just announced it is coming next year now she has already bought the Medtronic!
My biggest issue with the tandem is dropping low during resistance training especially but all forms of exercise. Anybody have thoughts on how to prevent lows with ControlIQ & Exercise? For reference today my last bolus was 3.5 hours prior to resistance training & my glucose went from 151 to 68 within 20 minutes of starting exercise so exercise mode did not help all that much.
I get just above 90% in range, and I do have my range a little bit lower in clarity so it is in the mid 90's if looking at the official target. But I would like to turn off all correction boluses as they do what they shall if I am fairly inactive, but it can't handle my more active lifestyle. If I reduce the insulin sensitivity of does nothing instead and does not correct the basal well enough. I think I will try out running sleep mode throughout the day as that way I will not get the correction, but on the other hand I will have a slightly higher basal to keep the tighter goals. So, i agree that it is a really great tool, but it needs more refining and it would be even better if the insulin was quicker than it is. Maybe I can get it to become a bit quicker by experimenting with the insulin sites, but I don't think it will do that much.
I was wondering if you have tried applying the Dexcom sensor a day before actually activating it. I used to do this with my Libre and got more accurate readings from day 1. I haven't actually tried it for my Dexcom yet, as the readings aren't too bad on day 1 for me...
Thanks for the tip. I have not tried it with Dexcom yet. I am worried to leave the sensor contacts exposed for the whole day... If you decide to try please let me know how it worked! Thanks!
@@TypeOneTalks if you come across a hack please share. Thank you I'm 61 and type 1 since I was 17 started out with mini med pump Aka Medtronic. Last year switched to tandem slim and dexcom 6 I love it
I am not sure as mine is covered almost fully through my insurance. I assume it also depends a bit on the country you are in. I would recommend contacting Tandem representative in your country. Good luck!
ADW Diabetes, an online store, has the T:slim pump listed at $5099 USD. Plus all the supplies like cannulas and reservoirs to use the pump. And the Dexcom CGMS supplies too. About $350 per month from several places online for Dexcom G6. There are other websites that sell diabetes supplies too. The supplies needed to change insulin sites every 3-4 days is about $14 at ADW Diabetes. $120 per month. Its about $5000 per year to buy all the needed supplies out of pocket each year. And $5100 to buy the pump. Then you can use the T:slim in automatic mode.
Is this a one off readings from the lab or is this HbA1c number? An isolated one off blood sugar reading from the lab does not say anything about your long-term compensation. So I would not put too much stress on that. Hope this helps and let me know so I can answer more precisely if needed
Tom, your Hba1c with control QI is higher because your number of hypos decreased. Hypoglycemias tends to put down this result and distort it. Your actual Hba1c is the "real" result and is actually better than before with manual control.
Hi Tom, thank you very much for your tips in this video. I have some general questions: ► Which insulin do you use with your Tandem t:slim x2? Humalog? Lyumjev? An other insulin? I am using a Minimed G640 insulin pump with Lyumjev. Moreover, I use freestyle libre 2 to measure my blood sugar Maybe I will switch to freestyle libre 3 ► Do you know whether freestyle libre 3 is compatible (currently works togehter) with any insulin pump on the market? That means, the value of my blood sugar which freestyle libre 3 measures is automatically transferred to the insulin pump? Best regards from Germany
Thank you so much for your time for us my friend and for your questions! On the first one, I’m using Lyumjev. I recently switched from Humalog actually and I talked about that in one of my videos. It was a good move. On the second one, Libre 3 currently doesn’t work with any of those systems. Abbott not promised that it will but it is not clear when. I talk about it a bit more in my freestyle libre 3 review If you want to check that out! Wishing you a great day my friend!
This is really a game changer for a lot of people. I am not on a pump, and while I think these are really great, the inability to set my own parameters on them are a dealbreaker for me. If I could set that in range number to about 90 to 100 I'd jump on it in a hot minute.
This was a tough one for me too as I aim lower. However, by setting the basal a bit high I can still get it to press the values down a bit even if it is reducing the basal when going under 6.1 mmol but by letting it think the need is higher when not breaking I get a low average and am now currently at a hb1ac of 43 which I am rather happy with 😬
The pump will allow you to leave it in Sleep Mode all the time. That's still not the range you want it, but others, like you, that want a lower range have had success by leaving it in Sleep Mode.
Can you pls make a video where you dont eat carbs for 24h and show us the graphic and insuline doses? And a day where you dont eat for 24h and show the graphic and insuline doses? And also a video where you eat 3 900 kls meals in 24h and you eat what you want for as long as you dont go above 900 calories, and then shair that day data with us??? Pls man, share your thoughts on this experience with us, do it and tell us all what was the diference on thoes 3 days how you felt, what you liked and dont like. I only ask for this cause i do it all the time, and obviously i dont feel right all time im a type 1, and i dont know anyone who is willin to try this.

Agreed! Thanks for your comment! Stay safe!
Fantastic info for my daughter. Thank you so much!
We only have the Basel iq in Australia atm. We have been told to expect the IQ in the first half of 2022. Can not wait!!
Can't wait for my son to get it soon too!! Any idea of the cost?
Hope it comes to you soon! Fingers crossed!

I want to thank you for the videos
You are most welcome my friend. Wishing you all the best!
Well done. Thank you. I am deliberating whether to start using Control-IQ.
Thank you so much! I hope you make the right decision!👍
Thank you for this excellent information 🏆🏆💪💪
You are most welcome my friend. Wishing you all the best!
I have many thoughts on the topics you shared but it would probably be much easier and much more effective to discuss over a phone as there is so much to say and not so easy to put my thoughts in a concise response within one comment:)
Also, I do not and can not provide medical advice but I do offer paid private sessions where I share my experience and where we can go over ideas. You can schedule a call with me here if you would like. calendly.com/typeonetalks
Here in Australia we only have have basal iq and my lows have gone from being around 5 % a week to less then 1 now highs have gone up a bit so looking forward to control iq to get approval for use here
Wait are u getting the pump?
@@bangtanxseventendarknight4032 I already have the tslim have been using it for 3 months now but we are only able to use the basal iq feature as the government body here that's like the FDA in the USA has not approved its use here in Australia yet
@@brettoreilly9669 I got diabetes when I was 8 and now I'm 16. I wanted to get a pump for my whole life but my dad said no (for other reasons) but now he think I'm ready and my doctor made me choose btw tslim or omnipod. I haven't visited him yet but I will do it I januari he said and i don't need to get worried about the money cuz here in Sweden it's kind of free when your young until 18 and then it won't be that much so money is not the problem but my question is what do u think about the tslim and do u have a dexcom to it? Cuz my doctor told me that it works better with dexcom?
Thank you so much for sharing your experience. Have a great day!
Finally haha the long awaited video 🙌🏼
Yes! Took forever to make this! I apologize for the long wait time!:)
Great video. Very informative👍
Great information sir. 👍🏽♥️
yeah thats the one thing which keeps me from getting a pump - i dont really have a consistend correction factor currently it is about 2 - but in 2 month or so it can be 0.5 again -.-

Hallo
The information you provided about the Tandem insulin pump was great and very useful, but you didn't mention how long does the pump battery charge last if it was charged to 100%?
Switching too tandem in 2 weeks and g7, been on pens 10 year but just started getting real good control woth my pens. I mean like over 90% in range so I'm real nervous going from 2 insulin too 1 which will throw me out until i get use too it all.
how many freestyle libre 2 sensors do you think you tipically found faulty per year ?
i for example have ve been using fs2 for the past 4 months, so 9 sensors total, out of which 4 were from the same batch and were all at least 30% wrong all the time vs glucometer, and another 1 that kept reading very scattered values so i took it off after 1 week
btw, thank you for the time and effort you put into this vid also
It's about time for me to upgrade my older insulin pump and CGM so I've been watching a bunch of your videos and found them REALLY helpful!
However, my observation has been that younger folks (let's say +/-
In term of Algorithm, which better X2 or 780g??
@@dwightl5863 Thank you
My question is whether Tslim 2 allows different carb ratios at different times of the day?
I am VERY insulin sensitive during the 4-8 pm period and very INSENSITIVE from 4-10 am
Yes. It does allow for this.
Just thinking this would have helped a lot!
ps the rest of us in the house are vaccinated didn't catch it so there's one for the vaccine!!
Thanks for your efforts in recording great videos causing you to get high BS, really thanks and wish you can avoid it 🙏 🙏♥️
I could not agree more! Thank you so much for your kind words my friend.
Thanks for your video. Can you please compare Tandem slim x2 with Roche dblg1 Insulin pumps?
Thank you for the video idea!
Stunning.. But looks like multinsulin are still better of all this burden of pump, and all the calculation around..
I believe it is relative and very individual. For me pump works great but I totally understand your point of view! Thank you so much for sharing!
How can get one in Ireland
How do you think it compares to the Medtronic 780G?
I cannot give you an answer to your question. But from what I've seen in other comments on various channels, the pump and algorithm seem pretty good but it's Medtronics CGM that is a very weak link to/for the pump. As they say: Garbage in, garbage out. IMHO
I do not have personal experience with 780G but after having used a Tandem pump i would not go back to Medtronic to be honest. Maybe this gives you an indication:)
Agree. I think you can not compare Medtronic's CGM with Dexcom. Different league.
Now all u need is an inset that doesn't obstruct when u lay on it. I don't think we have iq in Australia yet
Thank you for sharing. Great to see you are doing so well!
Thanks!
Your A1c is higher when you use Control IQ possibly because you had fewer episodes of hypoglycemia.
Hi ,I have new tandem slim x2 pump, when I try to upload data on glooko uploader, my new computer can't find device, please help.
Do you have a hack to prolong the transmitter?
No. I don't. I do not believe it is possible.
@@TypeOneTalks if you come across a hack please share. Thank you I'm 61 and type 1 since I was 17 started out with mini med pump Aka Medtronic. Last year switched to tandem slim and dexcom 6 I love it
Hi, please how much in dollar the price of tslim pump with close loop. I am a diabetic type 1.
Then you can use the T:slim in automatic mode.
on setember my sugar is 90 , on January lab is 114 , how long is take sugar go normal if I follow you tip ?
Thanks
Is this a one off readings from the lab or is this HbA1c number? An isolated one off blood sugar reading from the lab does not say anything about your long-term compensation. So I would not put too much stress on that. Hope this helps and let me know so I can answer more precisely if needed
Great video but can you please dial down the "beep" sound transition?
Thank you for the feedback. Will do it for future videos!
Tom, your Hba1c with control QI is higher because your number of hypos decreased. Hypoglycemias tends to put down this result and distort it. Your actual Hba1c is the "real" result and is actually better than before with manual control.
Agreed! Thanks for your comment! Stay safe!
Hypers ever day is all i can say for me
Hi Tom, thank you very much for your tips in this video. I have some general questions:
► Which insulin do you use with your Tandem t:slim x2? Humalog? Lyumjev? An other insulin?
I am using a Minimed G640 insulin pump with Lyumjev. Moreover, I use freestyle libre 2 to measure my blood sugar
Maybe I will switch to freestyle libre 3
► Do you know whether freestyle libre 3 is compatible (currently works togehter) with any insulin pump on the market?
That means, the value of my blood sugar which freestyle libre 3 measures is automatically transferred to the insulin pump?
Best regards from Germany
Thank you so much for your time for us my friend and for your questions! On the first one, I’m using Lyumjev. I recently switched from Humalog actually and I talked about that in one of my videos. It was a good move. On the second one, Libre 3 currently doesn’t work with any of those systems. Abbott not promised that it will but it is not clear when. I talk about it a bit more in my freestyle libre 3 review If you want to check that out! Wishing you a great day my friend!
how do you do at night with the Tandem when you sleep and turn around?
I clip the pump on my underwear band.
