The original novels were wonderful indeed. The transfer to screen has been in every regard as wonderful. Every nuance has been realized with tender loving care , from actors, scriptwriters, scenic designers. Composers, cinematographers. Each and every contributes to a marvelous version of telling the Lucia saga. Bravo a thousand times!
I love the way, in the last scene as they come out of the church, the jolly music almost seamlessly merges into the end theme as the group photograph is about to be taken. Pure elegance!
A few years back I visited the actual street, on a beautiful weekday in summer, it was totally empty and as I walked past Mapps house I expected Lucia to come out at any moment...It is strange to walk down a street and having never been before...know it so well already!... from an excellent TV series.
thankyou for posting this, after a hard day at work, watching the doings in Tilling are a great way to relax, its just such a pity the whole series is not on youtube for the world to watch. I read the 2 follow up books last year and I enjoyed the wartime one especially but it leaves you wanting more, pronto! au reservoir!
Thanks to everyone for all the comments! And glad to see so many Mapp & Lucia lovers out there. M & L set the stage for me discovering all of E F Benson's books which I love. I shall try to upload some more bits of Mapp and Lucia and Georgie soon! Au reservoir!
Britbox requires payment. The full series used to be available on TH-cam for free. It is so sad when we "lose" another item to the corporate system. They made their money on it many years ago, it should be open for people to enjoy on TH-cam.
puppiefaces you may not be aware of the situation in the UK at the moment. The Conservative government is determined to cut back on BBC funding, if not defund it altogether. Other television stations are also hurting. UK residents get access to old series for free through BBC iPlayer and other TV apps but have paid for them through their taxes, commercial support, and TV licences. A licence costs the equivalent of US$200 per year, Britbox subscription is US$89. I don’t think non residents (I’m one) have anything to complain about.
not at all tahsome. mapp, lucia and georgie have the most terrific voices. mapp's comes out in a torrent of flawliss(sic) diction. lucia's flickers between basso profundo and squeaky soprano, often in one word. and georgie's pronunciation is a thing of beauty. did anyone ever hear when mapp imitated lucia's voice? it was spot on.
Fred must be smiling. It's pretty wonderful, particularly Nigel Hawthorne and Prunella Scales - my one quibble is that Geraldine McEwan chews the scenery a bit.
The most underrated series ever shown on British television. Absolute, pure TV genius!
Magnificent dramatisation of
Mapp & Lucia

My god Nigel Hawthorn was so very good--what an actor!!

'My spats newly elasticized'.......falls about laughing.....
Desperately searching for the FULL series. I LOVE LOVE this series!!!!
puppiefaces if you haven’t found it already, the full series is on Britbox - along with a myriad of other brilliant British TV shows.
puppiefaces oh, and there’s a new interpretation of Mapp & Lucia on Britbox too. Different, but interesting.

Exceedingly noble of you, I am sure,
but I will always mourn the loss of every piece of material from TH-cam to private vendors.
Well described. I do wish they would repeat the whole series again. What a treat that would be:)
Rest in peace Geraldine
Brilliant
Georgie's bibelot! (Too tarsome!)
Wonderful books and TV series. Impossible to imagine a better Mapp & Lucia than Prunella Scales and Geraldine McEwan.
hysterical! :)

shame there were only ten episodes
If there had been more it would be likely the writing would suffer.
I bought M@L by chance, and now find BBC Canada doesn't have series 2. Wonderful!
@cuttock. Haha. Yes. I use some quotes to make a point among my friends.

@gtimny Which is exactly what Lucia herself would do too
🇮🇪😊
