I remember when I first learned this. It blew my mind!!! I used to do white kayaking and that sometimes involved camping for a weekend. I had a soprano recorder with me and some hand written tunes including Daphne. I was walking through the campground and I heard a flute so I went to the tent it was coming from. (There were at leas fifty tents at the lowest level of the camp ground.) I stood outside and the flute player turned out to be a pretty newlywed whose husband was a kayaker. Amazingly, her name was Daphne. Of course I gave her my carefully hand written version. (I think I had the basic tune and my favorite easy variation) her mind was blown. I never saw her again, which is not unusual at a kayak race we’re there were hundreds of racers. I kayaked for several years and I currently play fiddle and cello. I probably have twenty recorders in both wood and plastic. I’m also eighty-five these days so I take life a bit easy these days.
That "playing in the Janskerkhof for passers-by" always tickles my imagination... whenever I walk by the Janskerkhof, you know, next to the Janskerk in Utrecht.
I was looking for recorders on TH-cam can't remember hiw long ago in the 90s I did my Associateship of the Victoria College of Music on the Descant/Soprano and Treble/alto recorders. I now own thanks to you a tenor, Sopranino and the Garklein/piccolo. These recorders are fun!
I'm a huge Van Eyck nerd, yes m'lady. And you've done it again, you've made my practice sessions (what I call my Van Eyck workout) thirty six times more interesting. Sarah is one of the good and the great, let no one tell me different.
Excellent video. Don't think I'd mind Van Eyck rising from the grave and bopping me on the head. Once I got over the fright it be great to ask him to play a tune or two never mind have a wee chat. I think there might be a tiny secment of video missing Sarah at the 14min 21 sec part up to the 14min 35sec part.? Great video, very informative and entertaining.
Wow thanks for all the background and playing tips! I like to warm up with Van Eyck and just played it this evening. I'll be sure to look into these books and recordings.
Van Eyck would definitely approve of your mix & match versions. Imagine if he could know you were making this video & that his music is being enjoyed in the 21st century!...I think he would be delighted!
The first part without the modos (which in portuguese mean "modes") is so beautiful! I myself love a sound like this 😊 I play the chromatic harmonica, and well... Because of the lack of dedicated material and "easier" so to say pieces I tend to learn a lot of recorder and flute music - and sometimes violin if it doesn't use the bottom notes the harmonica lacks. There was a time I tried to learn the recorder on a soprano, and that's when I found your channel, been a subscriber ever since! I tend to prefer the sound of the tenor recorder, which in Brazil is not as cheap as the soprano or alto 😢 Anyways, thanks for the great content as always, and for this lovely piece, maaaaybe I'll give it a try on modos 2 and 3 after I learn it 😅
I love your videos and I am so in Love with Daphne. Yesterday I bought my first wooden tenor recorder and tested it by playing * guess what? * Daphne 🤣❤️ greetings from Germany 🤗
Before watching the video I wanted to ask you a question about articulations in Van Eyck but at the end of the video I got the answer. The question was how to articulate groups of biscrome, whether legato or detached, for example in the piece Daphne 5th variation in the second volume. When I studied it, my teacher forced me to play them staccato with the double tongue stroke, which I felt was too hard and I would have preferred legato or a softer staccato like ddl-ddl, which is impossible for the phonetics of us Italians, so I organised myself to use a staccato like dg-dg which is a little softer than tk-tk but which is still a little hard for me. Thank you very much for this video and more!
Is There note missing ? I hear something else then on notes on simple version. You played B there after A ? 2:04 - 2:05 ? Seams notes do not match sound.🎶Love this episode anyway ❤
Can you mix different bodies, heads and feet of varied woods on the same model instrument with different effect, or are they too hand tuned to do so- Would it make any difference and if so, how?
Someone called the Derde Daphne "chain variations". It's a very interesting structure that I'm not sure I've seen anywhere else. And, eh, you don't remark much on it here. First: A1 A2 (same B,C) Then: A2 A3 (and B,C), And A3 A4.
4 years ago, when I got my first alto, the first thing I played was Daphne, it was in my head because you play it all the time & I love it! Didn't know the notes, but I got it right the first time 😊 was a little impressed as I hadn't played the recorder for 30 odd years (I'm not being a smart-arse 😉x)
Hi. I've been trying the recorder for about a year now, I have a ''dream'' in red and gold, you know the one, but I can't get it to come ''naturally'' if you see what I mean. I teach guitar, also play harmonica, Ukulele and keyboards etc but can't get the recorder to ''become a part of me'' like the other things I play. I know this is a bit vague, but any suggestions please?
I was trying to play along to get the rhythm correct (since I am not very good at reading music), but it seems the music shown (not the original by Van Eyck--I couldn't make that one out) is in a different key than what you are playing? Or is the recorder at a different pitch? Confused.
I am confused too. Listened to Windmill Hut as I know that melody starts with D. But what she's playing doesn't start with a D. She is playing on an alto but even then I don't think it should sound any different, maybe I'm wrong. From what I can tell she's playing what would be a D on a soprano flute, but that's obviously not a D on alto.
Daphne Modo 5 confirms what I've always suspected. Renaissance Dutchmen had four hands and five lungs each. That would also explain all the phlegm in the language pronunciations.
@@mumsie27 It sold out super fast! But don’t worry - I’ll order a new batch in and they should be up on my webshop again soon. Feel free to drop me and email at info@sarahjeffery.com and I’ll make sure one is reserved for you!
And did you know Umberto Eco's essay "How not to talk abour soccer" (translation: William Weaver) where he has a laugh comparing foorball and recorder nerds using Van Eyck and Telemann? It's very funny
Your 17th century Frisian pronunciation of "De Friesche lust-hof" may be lacking, but the writer was dutch and your dutch is tip top! 👍 Btw: that blokfluit poster on the left getting in and out of focus all the time is quite .. ehm .. distracting. I cannot unsee it once I've noticed.

Version one and two sound really great together.

I am dutch myself and your pronunciation is absolutely amazing
Dank je!
I love the whole of the first version because I think it reflects the words of the song
I am now a budding Van Eyck nerd....it's contagious!
Net jouw boek online gekocht. Kan niet wachten tot die in mijn brievenbus ligt. Dankzij jouw videos ben ik op mijn 66jaar met blokfluit begonnen!!!!
Geweldig!! Ik hoop dat je er heel veel plezier mee hebt! 😊
You make my recorder life much better
I love this so much! Thank you for this wonderfully in-depth video. ❤️ 🎶 😃
Been playing recorder for almost 8 years now, played various bits of van Eyck for at least 6. Played Daphne for the first time today.
It’s lovely isn’t it!
@@Team_Recorder It really is. I especially like the falling arpeggios at the end of the A and C sections.
Lovely, Sarah: and so informative. Thank you!
Gostei dessa música em flauta doce ! 😊😊😊

Wow... Van Eyck could be classed as a 17th century jazz musician!
❤ you are a mesmerizing teacher/lecturer, and funny too, Sarah Jeffrey’s.

Sarah, that's really amazing, thanks a lot! I love Daphna and struggle to play it. Do you add tonguing in that fast passage starting from 8:04?
Is it just me or freedom is blacked out at 14:22
Ithought it was a TH-cam app bug. So it's not just you, there's a gap of several seconds.
Van Eyck rose from the grave to censor something Sarah said that was unacceptable to him.
I love your book!
I hope you’ll release a version of your music book for Alto
It’s in the works!
Ich habe gestern 24.7.24 das Heft geliefert bekommen. Danke für deine Widmung. Heute habe ich Stephan Blezinger eine ganassi bestellt.
Oh wonderful!
Combining two of my interests: recorders and British broadside ballads
Thank you such a good video
it's 2023 and our dearest Sarah is asking herself if it's okay to do a remix, bless her heart

What's your take on the Sopranino and garklein? 💪
Can I play this on the Yamaha YRS-24 B recorder, or do I need to buy a better recorder
Great video, very interesting 👏!!! I am a bit confused about the fingerings : do you play the g-alto as if it were a soprano?
I do!
@@Team_Recorder 😅what a relief, I have a new g-alto
So beautiful!!
Have you also planned a book for treble recorder?
Yes!
Yes...yes...yes I can't wait.
Greetings from Salzburg (Mozart) in Australia
Hi can you tell me the notes the intro sorry I cannot read sheet music I'm just a beginner
Can you mix different bodies, heads and feet of varied woods on the same model instrument with different effect, or are they too hand tuned to do so- Would it make any difference and if so, how?
Hmm wonder if it’s playable on my low d whistle?

Did you or are going to publish a version for Treble?
Sarah Jeffrey are there any advanced books for soprano tenor recorders. Seems all pieces are for novice players??
Why not in alto recorder?

You are correct, I’m playing on an alto in G, so the music sounds a fourth lower than what’s written on the page. Sorry!
But why doesn’t the new book include ALTOS?? So sad😢

ha ha
👍❗👍
НИЧЕГО НЕПОНЯТНО,
НО ОЧЕНЬ ИНТЕРЕСНО ❗
ПРИВЕТ ИЗ КИЕВА 😄
Any plans for a treble version?
Yes! Wil just take some time 😌
@Team_Recorder brilliant, thank you.
Something slightly related, I wish the Thysius lutebook was openly published on the webs.

Your hardcore fans are now confused with part B, missing the Bach medley! 😅😂😊
Hahaaaaa I should have segued into the partita somewhere 😂
Aaaaaaah your new book is SOLD OUT in the Team Recorder shop 😢 Is there a waiting list somewhere?

He liked it so much because it has The Lick at the end. Adam Neeley would be happy.

Oh interesting!!! I must find that essay!
Wow, van Eyke almost predated The Lick by a couple centuries.
Van Eyk, the prog rocker of the 17th century 😅
