Abby Sharp really rubs me the wrong way. She will hawk protein bars, sugar cream instant coffee and then picks at people who eats fruits. People say they eat a “handful of nuts” and she’s like ohh your measuring out your nut portion” is this an underlying ED? She really grates me. She did a video on Scout the ballerina a week ago and she criticised her for being in a calorie decifit. Really? How else does she think she maintains her body for work? I can’t stand her. She is all about preventing EDs but her whole channel is based on “reviewing” other people’s diets?

I can definitely see what you’re saying about Abby sending mixed messages. Too me, the main purpose of her reviews is to protect young impressionable people from being heavily influenced by dangerous ‘what I eat I a day’ videos that promote a severely restricted and dangerous diet. You are right that this purpose may get lost when over analyzing someone with a generally healthy balanced diet. Personally, I have watched Abby’s channel for a while and the only time I have seen her speak against excessive fruit or greens is when someones diet is built solely on eating them. I would guess the reason she didn’t come for you about is because you don’t eat a bowl of romaine , call it dinner and talk about how satiating it is. That being said, hearing that she cut the fruit out of your review is disturbing, I hope she responds to why she chose to do so.

I’ve been watching her for years and last week I was 10 minutes into a video when I just COULD NOT take it anymore. I’m too smart to sit there and be pandered too for 30 min for any longer. When you actually start paying attention EVERY time someone has a smoothie for breakfast (...an incredibly common and long enjoyed breakfast for many people who don’t like big breakfasts....) she goes on an “not to trigger anyone” rant. 😐 but then anytime she sees a generally healthy youtuber eat chocolate she’s so proud of them. • @chark2444
      @chark2444 4 ปีที่แล้ว +61

I don't particularly like her but I think she's trying to be quite measured in her approach. I wouldn't say she criticised him for not eating oils but just wanted to state to her audience that it's not necessary to avoid them and there's no harm in getting some fat from oil rather than just whole sources. Think she tries very hard not to promote any form of restriction (which is a good thing) which can sometimes ends up being contradictory as it ends up criticising those who emphasise the intake of certain types of food, or the exclusion of other foods, even if that restriction or increase in itself not harmful within the individual's diet.

So I wouldn’t describe them as healthcare professionals nor call the work they do as “clinical”.
Dietitians have to attend a 4 year college/program to become certified. There is a HUGE difference between the education/experience that Abbey holds vs this guy. Whether she practiced or not.

    • @forevermia622

Her entire channel is built on over analyzing popular influencer's diets. Almost every criticism includes "they should add fat or more protein or more carbs so that it's balanced." She has an obsession with every single meal being as "balanced" as possible. No one needs to obsess over food so much they try to stick every macronutrient in every meal and snack. It's certainly not intuitive.

@ Anna Lezdkan Every Influencer is kind of driven by sponsers, she is one of the few who mention it within the first 30 seconds of the video - which actually is a must, but noone does - and keeps in short and simple. Not faking how great something is and now knowing what it is. Her channel DOES NOT just exist because of the reviews of other YTers "WIEIAD"s, there is a whole lot of useful information about nutrition and recovering from an ED and so on. It is soooooo helpful when you are struggeling, because you find far too many horrible suggestions on the internet and she is finally someone I can trust - maybe you should be open and watch a few of her other videos, there is a lot of great information in them. I asked for a video to get into how to fix metabolic damage e.g. and she will post this video soon. It is a lot more than just reviews of other YTers, she is really helping those who have (had) an ED and I am very thankful for that. And some Influencers really eat shitty, vegans as well, we don't have to get into that. She is the last one to say you can't enjoy a pastry for breakfast, but maybe you can pimp it with some nut butter and you're good to go. It is advice, in the end. Noone is saying you have to eat a certain way, and I am healthier and happier since I found her channel. Can't say the same about this channel though. Her videos are tailored for an ED audience where it can be extremely dangerous to intentionally loss weight especially in the problematic ways that pop culture dictates as “the best.” She’s very nuanced in her videos about this. She’s about listening to your body and and if your doctor doesn’t say lose weight for health reasons then don’t. If there’s nothing wrong (other than society telling you you’d look better thin as a rail) don’t fix it

While Abbey means well, there are a few things about her approach that rub me the wrong way. Part of this you've already pointed out here: she talks about intuitive eating, listening to your body, etc. while simultaneously critiquing people on what she sees as the right/wrong way to eat. If healthy eating is so intuitive, why do people's eating habits need so much evaluation and feedback for improvement?
Also, while I understand it's less messy to critique the diet of a pretty Instagram model who won't get bullied the same way an overweight person might, choosing to criticize almost exclusively restrictive and/or extremely thin dieters means that Abbey severely under-represents the common disordered eating habits that most people struggle with with, i.e. being overweight and over-consuming unhealthy foods. She offers many, many suggestions for people who are thin and over-restricting, while not offering nearly as much advice for people with the opposite problem.
I assume she thinks that by criticizing the former she'll help alleviate the latter, but that seems like a huge stretch. When so many people say they struggle with nutrition because their body constantly wants to overeat, it seems extremely unhelpful to try and convince them those aren't real intuitions, they only have those cravings because of diet culture, etc. If anything, that's going to confuse their intuitions even more!

I have made similar comments on her posts. In reading her general replies and her replies directly to me, imo she pities morbidly obese people and thinks making videos about them could be seen as picking on a person with a mental illness. Which is the same thing. Unweight people have a mental health issue as well. She genuinely is so adverse to overweight people it was sad to me that she replied to my comment but clearly didn't understand it

She then tried to break down how many calories were actually in a single spray of oil, since most people would spray more than was calculated on the nutrition label. Basically to prove the point that people using spray oil were actually consuming more calories/than than they know.
Like... what was really the point in that? You think the people who would be concerned about the calories/fat in spray oil would suddenly be like "OH WELL guess I might as well chug some EVOO then"? I think there is a misunderstanding here the whole thread. Plant based is diet but vegan is a lifestyle and you don't become vegan for nutritional perposes you become vegan for moral reasons. (Speaking as a vegan who had an eating disorder) once you find out about the animal industry the morals take over and you will do whatever it takes to fulfil those morals and a vegan lifestyle. A plant based diet is just that. A diet.

I've watched a lot of Abbey's content, and I've learned so much, because she explains her claims and all. Generally speaking, I have nothing against her, I even think sometimes her words or ways of sendind the message are victims of misinterpretations, *BUT* - I agree with what you said as well. It has crossed my mind, that picking apart meals so much is very orthorexic still, and she conflicts her own words sometimes. The one thing that kind of set me off, was when she made a video on Natacha Oceane, basically being very nice, but pointed out how many 'clickbaity diet culture titles' she has for someone who claims to be intuitive eater, since weight loss is bad in any shape or form. Now, Natacha responded very politely with a comment, explaining that her intetnion is to grab the attention of people, who may still want/need to lose weight, and who search for those terms that might lead to more damaging, toxic diet channels otherwise (noting that she herself would search those term when she battled with ED.) And, that her programs are approved by UK Olympic team nutrition expert. Abbey responded, and they exchanged more comments, but I got a feeling of passive-agressivness real quick. She insisted that creating any sort of weight loss content is toxic, and that she essentially, just needs to 'self-reflect'. That was a real wtf moment for me.

When I started studying dietetics I made a motto on my mind; ''don't ever comment or pick anyone's way of eating appart unless asked by them. But, calling bullshit on stupid unscientific and unethical diet advice or a stupid diet is ok''. There are no authorities on nutrition but there is scientific evidence (it does no tell anyone how they should eat, because nutritional needs have a optimal range but need to be individualized, and instead gives general guidelines based on facts and evidence for people to implement and change them to fit their needs, habits, lifestyle and preferences) and health professional should listen to that. Nutrition organizations also compile scientific knowledge and give recommendations to make it easier. A good dietitian should know how to read the evidence and then tailor made their advice to every person. Health professionals (or anyone) don't get to have ''opinions'' or ''agree'' on what is healthy and what's not, that's why the diet and health world is so confusing for a lot of people. Its because a lot of people have opinions instead of facts (and tailored adviced based on those facts). Science is not an opinion. I fully agree that these ''diet reviews'' Abbey does are not correct because picking appart someone's eating without knowing the whole picture or without them EVEN ASKING is wrong, unethical and can be harmfull for others. But, talking about building a optimal diet, without opinons and based on facts, and giving an audience general advice and how they can blend it with their likes, needs and habits is okay. Picking appart its not. Because, at the end, there are a few optimal diets (and adaptations of them for health problems) but there are infinite ways of eating.

I’m glad to be able to listen to what she has to say from an experiences perspective but damn I it’s sad to know that other more impressionable people watch this and get confused by these mixed messages

Another thing I think is important to note is that Abbey is NOT just some regular TH-camr filming vids in her kitchen. Her content is VERY produced and she films on a set! Much of what she says on camera is likely scripted by writers, and I doubt if she's even the one watching people's videos for the reviews (that's probably also the job of her production assistants). She is never going to promote or fully support a vegan diet because it's simply not in the financial interest of her producers and sponsors.

unpopular opinion I LOVE abbey sharp shes helped me with eating soo much by showing how to be balanced. She’s also helped so many people with eating disorders about how to watch other people’s What I eat in a Day’s without being influenced! I get that she’s not perfect but id say she’s done more good than bad.

When most of the western world is obese and not underweight or with a restrictive ED, her advice falls short for most of us needing to lose weight.

This was really interesting. I watch Abbey but you definitely made a lot of good points. I'm really disappointed she cut out meals from your video in her review, that's very disingenuous.
Personally, I'm trying to get to a chill vegan diet but that's also nutritionally balanced and while I find her videos helpful with what to consider, I do sometimes start overthinking meals/food which is an issue for me.
Thank you for the balanced chat about this, lots of food for thought.
