I am s660 owner and it is my daily car. awesome experience everyday. simply a reliable and fun car that you can feel fast and not breaking speed limit.
I bet it is fun it also looks really good. However the price he said I just can’t justify for what it is. You can get a brand new Toyota GR86 for quite a lot less.
I'm an S660 owner here in Tokyo (and am fairly well-aware of the more major issues that Japanese owners have), so I can probably give a bit of an addendum for any reliability problems that might happen. Mainly, the fuel pump for the 2018 models are known to completely stop working -- even during driving (which can obviously cause a safety hazard on the road). A recall has been issued, which can be looked up according to the car's chassis # at honda JP's recall lookup site. Obviously parts would have to be flown over to your end, so hopefully Honda AU can accommodate that possible situation. There's also a recall for the early Carnival Yellow II colored S660s having considerable premature paint fading issues. Considering you guys are in a super-beamy part of the world, I'm guessing this issue would be further exacerbated over there.
Honda and their never ending paint issues. They’ve been having paint peeling and clear coat failure since the 90s. It’s a shame because the cars can last seriously long, but look terrible after 5 years and the roof and hood is all faded.
Spot on. I've owned one for three years. Best car I've ever owned. Every journey is a hoot, even in slow city driving. Practicality is challenging so it needs to be a third car but that constant smile on your face is worth it! Due to EV's there will never be one as light and as engivng ever again. This will be a hidden gem classic in years to come.
I've imported one to the UK having had a '91 Beat for 12 years. I've 2 other 'desireable' cars. My unmodified S660 really streaks away at lights to everyone's amazement. It's awesome. Agree with your vid, totally reliable and a head turner too. It's on rails. Friends demand I take them out in it. Oh, it does need frequent oil changes having a small engine and servicing every 5000 km.
i picked one of these over an MX5 in hong kong. I only drive for fun in the week end. Mine has a hks 100gt kit and with a specific map and test pipe gets to around 120hp weighting in at 790kg (before I took off carbon hood and lithium battery, now should be around 800kg). This is the power the car should have had from the go and even though on a straight line it isn't very fast by today standards, it gets to 100km/h in around 8 seconds and compared to my s2000 the sensation of speed is just hilarious. It's extremely fun and on some very twisty and tight road, extremely fast, no kidding. If you are 180cm or a little (taller) you gotta start doing mods to the seating position to drive it properly.nice review!
Need more cars like that, period. With traffic congestion, speed calming measures, police camera vans, average speed cameras and cops every available spot, at least yiu can enjoy the sensation of speed with out breaking the rules. Looks like a fantastic little motor.
I test drove one the other day and I must have it! This review aligns fairly closely with my drive. I didn't really notice the A pillars too much but the top of the windscreen is so low I had to lean forward over the steering wheel to see traffic lights. It wasn't nearly as loud as I thought it would be. Yes, it is louder than a Corolla but even at 110 on the freeway, it wasn't so loud that you couldn't hear the radio (if it even has one) or talk to your passenger. The internal rear vision mirror in the car I drove was also a camera, so rearward vision was actually brilliant. Blindspots are not great but no worse than a few other cars I've owned over the years. But none of that matters because the good stuff is so freakin' good!
At my old work there was a client that has one of these as her daily sharing the garage with her 991 Carrera 2S. I always thought if it was good enough to share space with a 911 then it must be a pretty special piece of kit.
$50k for that? Hell no, not even for the Mugen version. Heck, $30k is still too much. Shop around and you should be able to get a decent one for around $20-$25k. I am seeing far too many importer/dealers sticking ridiculous mark-ups on JDM grey market imports. Its getting bloody silly.

Lucky you guys can grey import this gem, RHD. In Europe and Latin America, simply not possible. Thanks for the review.
I’m from Europe but I love watching your videos. You always show exotic cars and yes, your accent is lovely 🤣. I love kei cars, I wish we could get them in Europe too. My first car was an old Mini (the Mr Bean type of mini) and tbh it wasn’t bigger! Mine had a Daihatsu 3 cylinder kei car turbo engine and it was fun as hell!
Ever since I tried the base S660 in Gran Turismo Sport I've been dying to drive one of these. It's a dream car for me because it's so much fun, but I don't think I'll ever be able to buy one. My only hope right now is somehow renting one when I travel to Japan.
We just need to change perceptions. Jimny has shown that in today’s market, kei cars CAN be super successful here. These should be sold by Honda locally, factory backed for similar money.
Funnily enough of all the cars I've driven over the Many years I've been driving, my 1984 Honda Acty Kei van has by far the best gear change, so they've been ahead of the gearshift game for a very long time. I'd describe it as being like a light switch.
The S660 to me looks like someone shrunk the S2000 in a dryer. Only 2 downsides I can see for myself are the storage space and the price otherwise it looks like a barrel of laughs. I drive a MGTF modded and really wanted an Elise. This was before the JDM market went crazy. Even the Elise was under $30K And them Covid arrived. Bugger!
Yeah !! I was soooooo tempted in buying one of these in about 2016....especially after seeing a few in the wild in Japan. However at the getting one into Australia was eye watering exxy. Bought an Abarth 124 instead when it arrived to scratch my convertible itch
My mate owns one of these. Love hate relationship. Hard to get tyres that aren’t semi slicks (caused him to crash it in the rain). Honda Dealer somehow cracked the windshield. Took 4 months for them to get a replacement. They really suck going up hill (but are amazing going down hill). Long story short he’s now looking to get a M125i as a daily 😂
Great review! I'm 192cm, so I feel like I'm just too tall for the s660 😢 Love to see a Daihatsu Copen review as well. The Kei car reviews are by far my favourites
I love seeing these around and in early 2020 I was in Japan and I did get to sit in one, it’s exactly the right amount of car around you for the purpose of driving, even more so than an MX5
There are perks for owning some of the more exotic and expensive sports cars but for the rest of mere mortals who can only dream, pretty happy that cars like the S660 exist!

I drove one in Japan back in October, got a couple vids on the channel. I'd buy one right now if I could. Too bad I'm in the US, so it'll be old and unreliable and more expensive than it is now.

You guys should come to QLD and review my 260Z. Yeah way out of the normal used car zone but not too far out for performance cars, or the price range. Tiny little car with a I6 engine, very light, raw. Fits tall drivers well.
A very rare car. Now don't get me wrong. Jim is a reputable mechanic and Honda is reliable in general, however how does he know the car is reliable, has he ever worked on one in Australia.
Because they do more research than Jim’s own personal experience? The engineering in these is also taken from pretty much all their other Kei cars. It’s just a repackaging of those components.
This S660, Jimny, KEI trucks.....all vehicles that many people love. But unfortunately here in Quebec (Cuba-Norte) they're not road legal. (Nor imported by the manufacturers) Sucks. We're stuck with expensive to own, run and repair vehicles that are not that interesting to drive. I find they're more designed for comfort than driving pleasure. Save the Manual!!!!! Cheers
I would love it, but the fact that you can't even have a small weekend bag if you have a passenger kind of kills it for me. Even the Honda beat had enough space for that.
Ok. We need to talk about that pointer thing. It's kinda creepy. Never use that again! These look awesome and the go cart handling would be a hoot. Unfortunately, at my height, it would definitely border on a clown car! Shame. Great review team. Loving the quirky options!
Love it. Too expensive though especially in light of the "built to a price point" nature and all the Kei's wear out fast. Literally has less storage than my Honda scooter! I wish we could import those here in the US.
Would have liked to see how the targa roof fits onto the car and how easy is it to fit? How long does it take to fit? Also does the roof leak in a downpour? How noisy is it with the roof on? How durable is the roof? How expensive is it to replace if damaged through vandalism or whatever? Apart from that, an enjoyable review, thank you.
Having driven one of these for a week, stupidly easy. It takes 3 minutes tops. It rolls over from side to side and has three clamps. That's it. Never got any heavy rain though so I can't say anything about that. The one I drove was over 100.000KM and it felt just like a new one with no wind leaks. It is significantly less noisy with the roof on, but it's far from quiet either.
Thanks for this good info, Luciano. By the way, I saw on another channel a test of one of these. It started raining and water started dribbling in along one edge of the roof. Just to let you know, no big deal. @@LucianoCapocci
Amazing information as always. love your videos! If possible can you review a Nissan/Skyline/Infinity G35/V36/350GT whatever it’s called. I mean the luxury 4 door sibling of the 350Z. I’m looking to buy one please
Sorry, but for $50k I’d rather get an S2000. 0-100 in half the time, dynamic drive, parts are getable, but still not common car on the road, going up in value and actually a decent sized boot the list goes on.
I'd love to get one and put a K series in it so it has a more modern amount of power. We won't get these in the States until the 2040s, so hopefully some day soon i can move to NZ.
I was in NZ earlier this year and a local Car TH-camr who has done a video on them told me there are only three S660s in the country still. I think they're maybe a bit more common in Australia.
Only if they put something like the 1.6 B series in it which made the 88 800kg CRX fast enough and the possibility to make it crazy fast with mods. I've never had a car that great, fuel economy better than a motorcycle 💪.
3:35 I drove a kei car for work. 900kg, 850cc NA, 4 doors hatchback. Nobody respects you on the road, they think the small car is slow and will happily cut you off in the traffic like you're not even there. Even bikes also don't care. I can assure you, if my small kei car hit you, the damage would be mutual. Don't buy to this car as daily driver, for track days, OK. 😂
I love little fun cars but this one is a bit too expensive for what you get. You can probably get a good condition Mazda MX5 with all the parts and aftermarket support for much less. The video is right, if you get into a car accident, parts and let alone a reputable body shop may not want to fix your car. This is basically a niche vehicle.
I gawked at every single one of these when I first visited Japan and then furiously looked at how to import one to Australia. Then realised they are totally impractical and cost more than a similarly aged ND MX5 or Fiat 124 Spyder. They make absolutely no sense here.
I am s660 owner and it is my daily car. awesome experience everyday. simply a reliable and fun car that you can feel fast and not breaking speed limit.
50 grand though? A GT86 can give you that and 30k in your bank

I *_REALLY_* wish I could drive one of these in the U.S. (even if it’s just between home & work or the local grocery store)
Sorry, but for $50k I’d rather get an S2000. 0-100 in half the time, dynamic drive, parts are getable, but still not common car on the road, going up in value and actually a decent sized boot the list goes on.
Omg never new this existed, I want one!
I love how Jim threw in the dodgy VW water pump 😅
Im in the States, i have 2 Beats, and i cant wait for the day the 25 year rule is in effect and i can import one.
Absolutely ballistic price for what it is. Looks great and I'm sure is fun in the bends, but for $50k you're getting such little car for the money.
KSwap? Lol
It is the mugen spec though. But yes very bloody expensive.
@@fredericoespinoza Even standard version are pretty pricey for what they are, but rare Honda's tend to be pretty good investments.
@@wiegraf9009 doesn't mean I couldn't import one myself 🤷 just means I couldn't really find one already there.
Oh yeah for sure. I believe you can also import them to Canada FYI@@stephenmoore1541
...oh god....i hope after this ReDriven review video...prices don't skyrocket and get rediculous.....oh wait think I'm too late again
K swap would make this a beast
It would but looks like it would be quite a tough mod because of the packaging
Only if they put something like the 1.6 B series in it which made the 88 800kg CRX fast enough and the possibility to make it crazy fast with mods.
I've never had a car that great, fuel economy better than a motorcycle 💪.
Dream car. Wish they would sell them in Europe
are you filming in Lidcome?
Certainly are
Bruh... The little pointer stick.
“… Volkswagen water pump…” I feel attacked 😂
HAHAHAHA LOVE THE LITTLE HAND
Idky but i feel the need to acknowledge the oz spec sss n14 in jim's care 😂
I am small asian guy
I fit in this vehicle perfectly.
Dig the "Willard" watch! Seiko?
Please review the N-One RS next!
whoever is importing those is making a boatload of cash
These would be great in the coastal states
I gawked at every single one of these when I first visited Japan and then furiously looked at how to import one to Australia. Then realised they are totally impractical and cost more than a similarly aged ND MX5 or Fiat 124 Spyder. They make absolutely no sense here.
Well I reckon I’d fit better in one than I did my ND MX5.
The mental gymnastics to try to call it a bargain.
