    Great vid Dan. It brought back good memories. My Dad used to drive a 780 special with a TVO engine. I spent hours riding on the toolbox behind his seat. Happy days.

    I remember that style of air intake that was on the previous model. One of my friends had that model, that vintage combine produced very clean grain.

    Dan as you can see my TH-cam name is 780Special ....some of the happiest days of my early life were spent riding on our MF 780 Special, which was a bagger model with a petrol /TVO engine and 8'6" cut. It used to cut our 80 acres then of wheat and barley plus some contracting for a number of small scale growers. Dad driving and old Tom bagging. It was replaced by a MF187 diesel tanker 10' cut combine in 1972. Loved spending time as a lad on that machine. It had a Penny and Porter rotating screen cleaner and had chutes into sacks for the grain X2 ,plus a light corn shute and a weed seed chute. Produced a lovely grain sample as it was cleaned. The old girl would tell you in the evening if it was getting too damp to combine as the drum would start banging. We struggled to get enough hessian sacks in the end, otherwise she was still working. Great stuff Dan .

      Great memories, at least in those days the weed seeds were removed from the field!

    Great look around the combine Dan, my grandfather used to have a massey 726 bagger combine, had a petrol engine with the fuel tank under the seat. They were cutting 100 acres back in the early 1960s. 👍

      Great bit of history there Gareth, I wonder if your old combine is still alive?

    We had a Perkins 4.270 in our 1966 Claas Europa. Still remember the sound and first start every year. My father sold it in 1992, despite its perfect condition. Now I own a 68' Massey 31 with the small 4.107 just for fun....

    Good video on the workings and problems of running a vintage combine.New or old,they can still breakdown , especially when the weather's going to break !!

      Massey Harris 780, Ron knight bought that combine for his own collection sometime after that program. I have seen it in his shed a number of times.

    Hi Dan back in the day we had a780 special. Had a hand operated hydraulic clutch which was a bit of a bugger at times. All ways gave a good clean crop though

    Cracking video Dan, my grandfather had a Massey Harris combine, not sure of the number but it was a bagger version, that if I remember the tails correctly, the table was not hydraulic but wind up, on a handle?? But not sure well before my time👍

    • @CowfarmerDan
      @CowfarmerDan  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      If it had a wind up header it would have been a 735, could have been either Massey Harris, or Massey Ferguson.
      Stick around as there might be one appearing on the channel next year 🙂

    We owned one in the 70s
    788 swept down radiator screen,the 780 before this one had no clutch pedal and an electric motor for table up and down,the didn't like oats

    Hi Dan it is a airstream helmet my dad used to wear one in the 70s 🤔👍👌

  • @780special
    @780special 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    Ps to add to my earlier comment, with an engine slung underneath and the heat build up particularly on the petrol TVO engines , the 780 's were a bit prone to setting on fire due to chaff and dust on a hot engine. Stopping in the field at lunchtime the radiator used to get brushed down daily. Dad burnt his hands once beating out a combine fire with a grain sack only for Grandpa to tell him he should have let her burn as they would have got a new one with the insurance !!

    I think you’ll find that’s a 63/64 combine pretty sure 62/63 model didn’t have the guard over the drum drive chain as for the wobble think you’ll find that’ll be the brg on the inner side of the drive shaft

    Used to have a 780s .cracking little machine with very little on it to go wrong so it was reliable...I seem to remember reading an article about the 788 that suggested the French made a version of the combine that included a Perkins 6 cylinder diesel engine fitted to it .Do you know if that is correct ?

    • @CowfarmerDan
      @CowfarmerDan  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I've not heard of one, but the French did make their own combines.
      A 6 cylinder engine would be a tight squeeze under the elevator housing though.

    • @massey892
      @massey892 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@CowfarmerDan the french built combine that lols like a 780/88 was the 892 fitted with a p6 engine , based on Massey Harris number 92 which was built in North America , after that the French again built a super 92 which ran a Perkins 6305 engine 👍
