      @@bencarter2334 My experience of a Massey was an old 185 did most of our farm work at that time and they were a good old work horse never gave abit of trouble I look at these modern tractors these days yea lovely to look at but you would need a degree in computers to drive them haha.

    Love the video. Took me back to the 1970's using a 2 drum Fahr on a Ford 3000 with select-O-speed, did the job OK and reliable. Good days back then

  • @HootMaRoot

    Listening or atleast trying to listen to you in the tractor reminds me of when I was a kid helping out a few of the old fellas that would be making hay, half the time you have no idea what they are saying when the tractor is running full tilt and you just smile, nod and say yes

    • @thefunkyfarmer

      🤣i didn't realise how hard it was to hear me until i watched the video back. shows how noisy these old tractors are

    Those blades are used on more drummowers. They look pretty similar to the blades I have on our Pottinger Cat, and they came in a Kuhn box from our Pottinger dealer :P. Also, you are right about blades and safety, but to swap the blades on the mower I have to let the tractor run, cuz when I turn it off the lift goes down, he did that from new. So in this case it's safer to let the motor run, strangely enough..

  • @JDseller1

    Richard, you should NOT change the knives side to side. The angle of the blade is different for right and left blades. The little bevel at the edge can go up or down. So just flip the blade on the side. DO not switch them side to side. You want the angle of the main part of the blade to lift the crop like your lawn mower blade. If you switch them side to side your pushing the crop down. In good standing grass you can get away it. In down crop you will see the difference.
    P.S. In your earlier mower video I left you a comment on mower recommendations.

    • @thefunkyfarmer
      @thefunkyfarmer  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      i don't think the angles on the blades are different. They look exactly the same to me

    • @JDseller1
      @JDseller1 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@thefunkyfarmer If the two drums turn in the same direction then they would be the same. I am more used to disk mowers than they have clock wise and counter-clock wise rotations. So there are left and right knives. The way to tell is the angle should lift the crop as it cuts.

    Great to see the old kit working, From a business point of view though, does it not make more sense to get the contractor to mow aswell, i understand it means you are not waiting about for them to do it, but we found it aloud us to do other jobs that otherwise wouldnt get done, love the channel keep it up

    Hi, Check ebay. If you can afford it, there looks like a good Vicon second hand for around £3500 with a conditioner on. I have an older Vicon, and a great tool. Folds up hydraulically. Easy to use, I have found. That grass could have been fit for hay in 48 hours max. I have even had hay for round bales in 24 hours.

    Nice looking crop Richard. Out of interest, how much longer did it take using that mower compared to the one which is waitng for repair? It would be interesting (for me) to compare the very old, with not as old, then, against the new one when you get it. Just curiosity.

    Old gear still doing the job, for now lol, I think you made a mistake by not putting the desired amount of nitrogen on the grass for second cut, here's my thinking (old retired farmer), you will have less feed for winter, yes? because so many might be doing the same with nitrogen, less feed hay/silage, available for sale, prices will have skyrocketed due to input cost, fuel ect ect. So in the end and I hope I'm wrong, it will end up costing you more than you saved. Good luck, you might be delaying the mower purchase, maybe you can borrow Farmer P's mower ? lol
