The officer who engages John initially does an amazing job to deescalate the man. He had him completely calmed down until the woman showed up on the street.
Scary to think that in many states John would be allowed to purchase a AR-15 with no questions asked. Luckily he doesn’t have the ability to save any money..
True, the making a deal over the chili was weird, but to be fair, it does show how the cops weren’t really listening to him. I know, he was drunk and ranting but it wouldn’t have mattered if he was sober. The coppers don’t listen. They have their script and couldn’t care less what citizens might have to say.
I had a best friend like that. It just never ended with his drunken hatred. He flew into a rage on my wedding day in front of my entire family and puked all over our kitchen as he was raging. That was the last straw. I severed all ties with him. He was my best friend since middle school. He made himself into my worst enemy. I still don't wish him well.

@Axel Lopez Nearly every single self defense action could be considered escalation the way you explain it. Just like how someone comes at you with a knife...you have the right to shoot them. Well that escalation. But it’s also necessary. And the law precuts it.
From his head movements at the beginning, it looks like he was jawing at her. She gets mad and throws a table at him. The people working the soup kitchen should have stepped in before hand. The video doesn’t show what escalated the argument. There was never in interview of the woman or other people.
I was a raging alcoholic from the ages of 18-23 yet somehow never endangered the public like this. Having a substance abuse problem does not give people an excuse to endanger everyone around them.
That's the delusion of criminals: talk smack and act tough and 2 seconds later they're on the ground crying. That's the reality most tough guys experience.
While alcohol and mental illness could be contributing factors, I believe the real culprit of his behavior can be found at 15:17 when he says "I've been up for 9 days! No sleep! Smokin' meth!"
While John was certainly in the wrong with most of his actions, the woman also started the whole incidence by attacking him. Where is the report on her?
I had a really bad day after a drunken scuffle , and it's attitudes like this that really make the difference it's really stressful when a bunch of cops roll up so thanks to all the officers that treat people respectful.
after watching so many of these videos, i can say without a doubt, that La Crosse county has the nicest and most sane citizens who never cause any disturbances! they just seem like such a happy bunch! i mean look how excited that John guy was. so pleasant

During my mom's funeral, we got the cops and the fire department called us on because one of the neighbors complained saying we were lighting stuff on fire. We had permission from the city too and even called a head to the police department to let them know. The cops that did show up to my mom's funeral were very chilled. Same incident happened at my house. Neighbors called the cops because my dad was lighting twigs in a metal garbage can. Cops showed up and said he would have been cool with the whole thing, but since the neighbors called, they have to come check it out. Said we just needed to put the fire out and he'll move along. Very very chill cops I've encountered.
Yup she started it but he shouldn't have responded by pulling a knife and attacking staff with it. They were only doing their jobs feeding everyone. Why did he need to jab at them? He should have been tazed and thrown into jail.
The fact that she wasn't arrested leads me to believe the other employees spoke up for her in some way. That tape had no audio, so we have no idea if she's the aggressor, or just the first to take physical action. And it looked more like she was using the table as a barrier at first, a crappy one at that. Those flimsy plastic tables are garbage. Without audio we'll never know. Edit: Hmm, I watched it again. If you watch, she has her back to him, sitting at the other table. So I imagine John was slinging some unsavory language her way. Silly situation to draw a knife in in any case.

I don't know why I watch this stuff, as it gives me anxiety. I could never be a police officer, and kudos to these guys for treating this stuff with so much patience and professionalism.
My best friend is a police office and I too suffer from anxiety. Anytime I think about complaining about going to program, I try to think how nice I have it.I don’t even go out to party to avoid situations like this, and they have to go in and deal with them. Wild.
@@TheMetalhead1311 i suffer from social anxiety and I found something that works for me, preparation, whatever you fear the most before leaving the house prepare a plan to counter it, your mind feels at ease because if you're like me your brain needs to know everything before making a decision if you leave with uncertainty you feel like something is pulling you back and throws your attention out
John seems like such a well-balanced and mild-mannered individual, whose only flaw is being so soft-spoken that nobody ever hears his version of events. I hope some day he learns to speak up for himself so he doesn't always get the short end of the stick.

This is on the worse end of what these guys deal with. These officers had some fear in them (rightfully so). When a 6’4 250 pound crazy drunk guy with NOTHING to lose says “I’m ready come at me” EVERY sane person would be puckered. He has a shitty life probably from a real dark upbringing and was trying to enjoy a warm meal, when some dumb meth head flips a table with his PRECIOUS food on it… yeah lions do bite. These cops kept it professional but no less than four cops would approach to arrest that man without tazer or guns drawn. Rightfully so. Imagine him in this mindset in his 30s. Wild.
They also have a history with this guy, brief as it may be. And that can go pretty far in either direction as to how officers interact with people. Anyone who says the pigment of a human changes how they are treated is in fact, a racist. Whether it's someone hating or having a prejudice, or someone bringing it up to make a point. Color is irrelevant, behavior is key.

Yes he was clearly provoked into a violent reaction, for a large portion of people when drunk is not a difficult task. However running your mouth is not a criminal offense. For all we know all she did was ask him to close his mouth while chewing.

I've volunteered in many warming shelters, food banks and soup kitchens over the years. Mental health problems and homelessness coexist. People will fight to the death over damn near anything which is sad because these people are biting the hand that feeds them and get banned from resources. Then, petty theft goes up. These cops showed a lot of restraint with this guy especially after he lunged at them. I mean, they were REALLY nice to him. I hope he gets his sh*t together..

Work in the ER and get people in there that have been banned from shelters and have no where to go. Sadly they just go in and out of the ER until they migrate to the vicinity of another hospital and repeat there

Yeah I'm a frequent flyer again because I chose to do meth with my ex but I dumped him because I'm tired of being stupid. I am from and live in Alabama. They would have fucked him up the minute he came at them cussing and I may not like all of them but them guys would have prevented the threats. He wouldn't be conscious. He would be humble when and if he woke up. They had to take me last month because I wouldn't listen when they told me to get on the ground. Today in court I was surprised that I wasn't arrested but u definitely deserved to be. The only reason I'm glad I wasn't is because the people who love me would see me get arrested again. Not fair to them. I'm gonna try to do better tho. Deep down I'm better than how I've been acting and begged him to stop using until I went to court because I wanted to stop. I beat him to sleep day before yesterday when he told me I wasn't leaving and pushed me away from the door because he is a pussy who never will change. I want to try even if I fail I'm trying and alive for some reason. Yeah this guy is a crazy mf and tough but he's lived through hell for sure. They need to put my ex in his cell he likes to give meth to people like me and women. He does need to have some consequences but he should try to get some help. He deserves it and there was room for the woman to go as well. So many people hurting and I empathize with him but I couldn't let him kill or hurt me. He's dangerous to everybody around him no doubt and to himself. It would be even sorrier to not try to help himself. I hope for a good outcome for sure. This didn't happen for nothing, he was once an innocent kid. I hope all people get karma who give meth to people and this is exactly what that looks like. Violence is required or you could lose your life. These cops were great tho and he will be going away again for sure. He will sober up and regret this to some extent but I hope that he beats addiction. He deserves to and so does everyone else around him.
Unfortunately, we only punish physical 'acts.' Insults, abuse and humiliation isn't easily recognized. Someone will live through ten years of abuse in school, no one will do anything until the day they punch a classmate, then they're suddenly the bad person and everyone doing the abuse is blameless.

Full credit to these officers. They did EVERYTHING they possibly could to keep this from getting out of hand. They gave him every chance to be reasonable, but were always ready for him to be unreasonable. He was the initial victim in the incident, and they gave him the benefit of the doubt for that until he gave them no choice.

Let’s use some logic here. He went off because she flipped a table at on him. Fair enough. Most people would get angry or confused depending on the circumstance. The importance question is what does is take to make a person snap and just flip a table on someone? Im going to make an educated guess and say they were arguing and he said something that crossed the line. Could be harassment, based on others reaction I hope not. But based on his language he could of definitely said something to piss her off. Do we know for sure. No. Maybe she just didn’t take her pills that morning and just wanted to flip tables and happened to trigger another guy who’s not right in his head and has a knife. Either way they would be both be charged.

I used to think being a cop would be so cool when I was a kid. Then shows like "Cops" came along and I realized that what they really do is deal with the worst that humanity has to offer day after day after day. I no longer think it's cool.
Agree and is every day of their career unless they have a desk job. I have a cousin who just retire after 25 years on the force and he always told me , he was lucky he did 7 years or patrol and the last 18 years was at a administrative desk job. If he had to do patrol and calls, he would never have made it to 25 years,
I volunteer at soup kitchens and those people really have so many other things going on. It's a lot going on so I do appreciate cops who speak to the homeless and those with mental illnesses with care and patience
Hi John, I know what you mean. Police have to deal with a plethora of issues these days. It's no longer cops and robbers like the old days. This police officers were so patient with this drunk and agitated man. It's clear that he suffers from mental health issues. I'm sure this man was once a productive and wonderful man. Life rarely gives us what we deserve ☺️
These cops were magnificent. My oldest brother was mentally ill, we had encounters with the police when I was a preteen, and there was nothing approaching this level of kindness and understanding in the 1970's. I'm not dissing the cops, they were not brutal, but they had no training in those days. But I've always remembered that it was only cops you could call when you were really in danger. They were the only ones there to help us. My poor brother is long gone and I believe he lives in peace, but I'll always think, God bless cops.

The officers did a really good job of keeping this non physical for as long as they did. The distraction and then take down was a very smart move as well. John just seems like someone who has had enough of life. This whole situation was just sad to watch.

He repeatedly said he threatened her prior to her flipping the table. It's not as if she flipped the table unprovoked. After she flipped the table he threatened to stab, kill, etc... everyone else and he attempted to assult and/or assaulted several people including cops. I'm not understanding why you think she was the main problem. I'm not saying her behavior was appropriate, but she posed less of a threat and even by his own admission he threatened violence first. Had he not pulled out the knife, I doubt the cops would have been called at all, but if they were, I'm sure she would have been the main concern.
When I sit back and think about the dreams this man must have had as a child, I can't help but feel sorry for him knowing that at some point in his life - those dreams went crashing down and life's circumstances led him to where he is today.

The one responding officer, who engaged with John, was AMAZING. He did EVERYTHING right so as to not escalate further, and to keep up with the matter at hand. So impressed with cops who are like this. When I lived in Palm Springs California, between 2007 and 2019, I saw the PSPD perform in the same way. In a nation, and time, when we can't always depend on such excellent responses from our Police departments, those upon whom we can, are deserving of kudos and gratefulness...ESPECIALLY with a subject who became so belligerent and then physically resistant
I believe in billy clubbing everyone first and asking questions later. Just like when I was little. My sister and I would fight all the time and my mom would say, "If I call dad, he is bringing a supreme ass whooping to BOTH of ya!" We managed to resolve our differences rather quickly when mutual demise was called into question.
It’s impressive to see how HARD they tried to not have to get physical and take him down. The amount of restraint by the officers was very impressive. Sad that things escalated. Hope the man and the woman both get help they need.

The title made me laugh, but the video made me shudder. I've been abstaining from alcohol for a few years, after I had a couple of DUI's. I watch this channel a lot to remind myself to keep abstaining. A friend of mine - who was very supportive of Police/Youth programs - died of diabetes a couple of years ago. I am subscribing also in his memory. RIP, John V. - I love you. And your memory helps me to stay on track. Thanks to all the truly good police officers (I'm good friends with a retired police officer, as well). This video is definitely helping me today - GEEZ!!

@Joseph Ferrell A woman with possibly a mental condition up ends a table and spills your chili does not warrant a man to start swinging a knife at her. That's the difference. One action (up-ending a table) was annoying (she did spill his chili) and possibly could cause some bruises but the other action was life threatening.
The reason we get "horror stories" is the Leftist mainstream media. 99% of cops show up, do their jobs, act professionally, protect us, assist us, deal with drunk/high/mentally unstable people, deal with criminals, etc.
and how did they work???? not at all from the continued real life events that i see on videos "de-escalation" nearly never actually makes any difference people gonna do what they gonna do!

We had permission from the city too and even called a head to the police department to let them know. The cops that did show up to my mom's funeral were very chilled. Same incident happened at my house. Neighbors called the cops because my dad was lighting twigs in a metal garbage can. Cops showed up and said he would have been cool with the whole thing, but since the neighbors called, they have to come check it out. Said we just needed to put the fire out and he'll move along. Very very chill cops I've encountered.

The fact that she wasn't arrested leads me to believe the other employees spoke up for her in some way. That tape had no audio, so we have no idea if she's the aggressor, or just the first to take physical action. And it looked more like she was using the table as a barrier at first, a crappy one at that. Those flimsy plastic tables are garbage. Without audio we'll never know.

I've volunteered in many warming shelters, food banks and soup kitchens over the years. Mental health problems and homelessness coexist. People will fight to the death over damn near anything which is sad because these people are biting the hand that feeds them and get banned from resources. Then, petty theft goes up. These cops showed a lot of restraint with this guy especially after he lunged at them. I mean, they were REALLY nice to him. I hope he gets his sh*t together..

I want to try even if I fail I'm trying and alive for some reason. Yeah this guy is a crazy mf and tough but he's lived through hell for sure. They need to put my ex in his cell he likes to give meth to people like me and women. He does need to have some consequences but he should try to get some help. He deserves it and there was room for the woman to go as well. So many people hurting and I empathize with him but I couldn't let him kill or hurt me. I used to be a cop . You often deal with crazy homeless people and they smell like piss. And so did I after dealing with them
I think it's cool and awesome what they do but no longer want to do it.
I could never be a cop. The shit they have to deal with is absolutely insane. Not many people can do this job.
Hi John, I know what you mean. Police have to deal with a plethora of issues these days. It's no longer cops and robbers like the old days. This police officers were so patient with this drunk and agitated man. It's clear that he suffers from mental health issues. I'm sure this man was once a productive and wonderful man. Life rarely gives us what we deserve ☺️

These cops were magnificent. My oldest brother was mentally ill, we had encounters with the police when I was a preteen, and there was nothing approaching this level of kindness and understanding in the 1970's. I'm not dissing the cops, they were not brutal, but they had no training in those days. But I've always remembered that it was only cops you could call when you were really in danger. They were the only ones there to help us. My poor brother is long gone and I believe he lives in peace, but I'll always think, God bless cops.
How many times did the police help you when you were in danger/being attacked? I’d be interested to hear about the situations, as I haven’t heard of many like them.

The officers did a really good job of keeping this non physical for as long as they did. The distraction and then take down was a very smart move as well.

He repeatedly said he threatened her prior to her flipping the table. It's not as if she flipped the table unprovoked. After she flipped the table he threatened to stab, kill, etc... everyone else and he attempted to assult and/or assaulted several people including cops. I'm not understanding why you think she was the main problem. I'm not saying her behavior was appropriate, but she posed less of a threat and even by his own admission he threatened violence first. Had he not pulled out the knife, I doubt the cops would have been called at all, but if they were, I'm sure she would have been the main concern.

When I sit back and think about the dreams this man must have had as a child, I can't help but feel sorry for him knowing that at some point in his life - those dreams went crashing down and life's circumstances led him to where he is today.

The one responding officer, who engaged with John, was AMAZING. He did EVERYTHING right so as to not escalate further, and to keep up with the matter at hand. So impressed with cops who are like this. When I lived in Palm Springs California, between 2007 and 2019, I saw the PSPD perform in the same way. In a nation, and time, when we can't always depend on such excellent responses from our Police departments, those upon whom we can, are deserving of kudos and gratefulness...ESPECIALLY with a subject who became so belligerent and then physically resistant
I believe in billy clubbing everyone first and asking questions later. Just like when I was little. My sister and I would fight all the time and my mom would say, "If I call dad, he is bringing a supreme ass whooping to BOTH of ya!" We managed to resolve our differences rather quickly when mutual demise was called into question.

Like Arlene stated, some out there hear the call and decide to make a career out of it. The title made me laugh, but the video made me shudder. I've been abstaining from alcohol for a few years, after I had a couple of DUI's. I watch this channel a lot to remind myself to keep abstaining. A friend of mine - who was very supportive of Police/Youth programs - died of diabetes a couple of years ago. The professionalism and calming demeanor of these officers amazes me. Far too often we get horror stories of cops acting rashly or jumping to conclusions. These men are amazing

@Joseph Ferrell A woman with possibly a mental condition up ends a table and spills your chili does not warrant a man to start swinging a knife at her. That's the difference. One action (up-ending a table) was annoying (she did spill his chili) and possibly could cause some bruises but the other action was life threatening.
The reason we get "horror stories" is the Leftist mainstream media. 99% of cops show up, do their jobs, act professionally, protect us, assist us, deal with drunk/high/mentally unstable people, deal with criminals, etc.
