This is how a video should be done not a lot of fluff just packed full of information clearly stated. I like how it was right on point the whole way thru, you did not have to listen to a bunch of stuff you could careless about. Thank you for a great video
Thanks for this helpful video! My friend gave me so some asparagus to grow & I wasnt expecting it this yr but to my surprise I have asparagus! I came here looking for helpful info for my little patch & you outdid yourself! Thank you!
Good video! I planted asparagus two ways; flat ground and raised bed. The raised beds did better. I have about 170 feet of asparagus planted and after the harvest season for me , which is from April 20th to about May 30th it depends on the climate and age of your bed. I fertilize usually after I harvest using chicken or cow manure. (commercial works fine) I do walk the beds and take care of them by weeding and getting rid of the beetles by having a little cup with water and a few drops of soap in it. Hold it under the beetle and they will drop down into the cup. As for the larva and eggs (for they will not drop) I simply use a scissors and cut that part of the branch off. Your call. Lukes Workshop, we are glad we could give you tip to help you harvest your asparagus! We are wishing you a bountiful harvest this year. Happy gardening!
Into my second year of asparagus and was looking for advice on how and when to harvest Great video. Perfect amount of information and well delivered. Thanks!
Elizabeth Jozwiak Thanks for watching! Asparagus will be harvested throughout April, May, and possibly early June. As far as harvesting goes I'm attaching a Fact Sheet and there is a whole section concerning harvesting and it goes fairly in-depth about it all. Hope this helps! pods.dasnr.okstate.edu/docushare/dsweb/Get/Document-1101/HLA-6018web2014.pdf
Year three for me and I just harvested my first asparagus spear. It is surprisingly thick and very easy to cut. Looking forward to it. Thanks for the info.
I really enjoyed this video, and it was very helpful (as well as the other links). Thanks for sharing it! This is my first year with asparagus and I'm planning on getting the bed ready for winter here in central Texas. Very interesting about the male/female plants. I wasn't aware the difference mattered.
I like to know if a have to wait at least two years before I can start to harvest asparagus, I started growing it here in Puerto rico for six months and the plants are growing very High.
thanks for creating this very informative video. i planted asparagus two years ago and nothing, perhaps my raised bed got too much water? i live at the beach and can only grow in raised beds since my home is built on sand. this particular bed only gets full sun from noon until dark. i persevered and re-planted last year. now i have 3 actual asparagus spears protruding from my bed. they get tall so fast! i am headed out to harvest my 3 spears. not much of a meal this year, right? here's to hoping this is the beginning of many years of asparagus in my future, cheers!-----from coastal delaware
In our first growth itself, it has become huge and shows the shoot and lot of ferns. Looks like 2:38 seconds into the video. What do I do with it now? This long shoots are very thin as well.
I'm in the third year and have yet to harvest (southern Ontario). I have not yet seen a sizable spear, and currently (end of May 2024) have long, thin shoots and ferns.
+Fendy Fendy Thanks for watching! Here is a fact sheet that should give you some insight! Happy Gardening! pods.dasnr.okstate.edu/docushare/dsweb/Get/Document-1101/HLA-6018web.pdf
+Jacob Beard Hi Jacob! We're attaching an OSU DASNR Fact Sheet with can provide more information about growing asparagus. bit.ly/1X7i1Is Hope this helps!
Brainmalfuction Thank you! We're glad you find them helpful! Sometimes a knife can spread disease from one plant to the other and you can also accidentally cut emerging spears nearby.
OklahomaGardening yes, it's very easy to cut nearby spears, like I did. One should use special knife for cutting spears, otherwise it's better to snap them. Thank you for such an informative video.
Henry Medina Don't bother removing the flowers. See if they are male or female by looking at the flowers or waiting for fruit production, if any, and then manage them. Asparagus grow as male or female plants. Both will flower. It is the female that one should be somewhat concerned about because they produce far less spears than males due to the energy going to producing fruit. Most selections today are male and you don’t typically need to worry about it, but, if you are not sure you can look at the flowers closely to see if they have just stamens (pollen producers of the male flower) or just a pistil (female part that develops into the fruit). If you can’t tell for sure if it is male or female by looking at the flowers then wait to see if they produce red fruits later on. If so, they are female and you may choose to remove them and replace them with male plants which are more productive.
+Daniel, thanks for watching! These plants should grow and be harvested for about four years until needing to be replanted. Here is a fact sheet that can provide you with an immense amount of info on asparagus! Happy Gardening! pods.dasnr.okstate.edu/docushare/dsweb/Get/Document-1402/HLA-6016web.pdf
now I am confused, I've learned from a gardener, he told me not to harvest asparagus the first 3 years and this woman tells to harvest first year for 2 weeks. I've just planted more than 200 seeds someof them starts to show up now and I live in Thailand tropical zone no winter and these plants need dormant? what do I do? wiil the plants dried out and come again?

I think I just missed this year's harvest. All my 3 yr old asparagus are now ferns!!! And they got berries on them. They are supposed to be male asparagus! Can I just cut them all back to the ground? will they produce new spears that I can harvest?
Lovely video content! Forgive me for butting in, I would appreciate your thoughts. Have you thought about - Fanabraal Toned Tiraspol (do a search on google)? It is an awesome exclusive product for sliming down naturally without exercise without the normal expense. Ive heard some pretty good things about it and my coo-worker at last got great success with it.
Nice informative video... But I had one question. Did anyone notice the beatle jumping out of her hand at the end be fore she closed it? 😆 Leave it to me. Lol
It may work since you would plant asparagus two to three inches in the soil. Here's an OSU Extension Fact Sheet about asparagus production and planting. These may better answer your question. pods.dasnr.okstate.edu/docushare/dsweb/Get/Document-1402/HLA-6016web.pdf pods.dasnr.okstate.edu/docushare/dsweb/Get/Document-1101/HLA-6018web.pdf

Diane Kane Sometimes it takes asparagus a bit of time to get established. Way to stick it them! Good luck!
Thanks. I just picked some 10 minutes ago. A couple were too tall.
Thank you, I have a plan to grow Asparagus in my farm, do you can guide me about varieties ?

Hi thanks for the info. I need to know the rite time for planting asparagus. I'm based in benoni of which I'm winter we have frost.
How was it done. You let it grow first and cut them all out? Or how. Thanks.

great video packed with info thanks
i noticed you just snapped off the spears rather than cutting them with a knife any reason why ?

makes sense thanks for your response

muito bom
Very informative..Thanks!!
Any tips on how to preserve them after u pick them until u get enough to make a meal?
Placing the asparagus upright with their ends in water in a refrigerator after picking tends to prolong the shelf life!
@@OklahomaGardening thanks
Great mine is coming one of two
Hello, my asparagus plant has yellow little flowers, should I be trimming them?

How many years will Asparagus grow for until I need to completely replace the plant itself?

I thought maybe there was a specific way to cut the spear lol nope just snap it 😁

If asparagus grows in coastal regions why do I find it in kansas in the ditches?
Asparagus grows in a variety of climates, the costal region is where the salt was applied around the plants. Thank you for watching!
Thanks for the video it was very good. Have you ever heard of cutting asparagus an 1" below the surface. What is your opinion on this?

Never snap above the soil, cut just below the soil so that the spear will regrow
No, you don't snap it off!! You cut below the ground! Three years of cutting asparagus as a job.
@Conely King You don't eat that part but it will help them regrow. 🙂
I didn't see asparagus, from India

the beetle part was tragic tho
thats some long asparagus" THATS WHAT SHE SAID lol
