I received the same exact car. Agree with everything you say, except NO, Bjorn, it is NOT an ugly car. I was not fond of its look on Photos but it is very nice in person. It really look like a sci-fi kind of extra planetary vehicle, especially in white, and of course everyone has different tastes, but NO, it’s not an ugly car
I think that’s just his opinion, a lot of people don’t like the looks of Tesla and say they look like fishes.

The competition for the Y is strong, but for now it’s still the car I’d choose. The 3 and Y may not be the car for everyone but for me everything just feels right.
Watch Marcus Brownlie's most recent vid and you'll see why the Tesla is the only real choice right now. Even if the other cars are good. Unless u never have to charge anywhere but home.

@@lucius574 Because range is not such an important issue as the fossil automakers try to make it appear. Especially with a good charging infrastructure, such as Norway has.
@@lucius574 Yeah, range isn't very important. Most people charge at home during weekends. Going out for a long drive across the country? Just charge when you take leaks at a gas station. The average first timer buyer cares more about range than the average second time EV buyer (unless you use the EV for long range transpo).

Bjorn. . I had to come back and watch this. I totally agree with you. I have been driving a model S and complained about the 1 screen. But a few weeks ago I drove a model 3 and the 3 times I drove a Y in test drives. Thanks to the nice sales people. I got totally used to the one screen and when got back I’m my S. It felt cluttered and it really isn’t but man I can’t wait for my Y. I ordered it 2 weeks ago. I am a convert.
Also agree. The "umph" is there also above 100 km/h in 3 and Y, especially 2021 models

Its almost has to. Would be nice to experiment with it in order to explore the differense.
The differense is obvius with a oem body and a body that is reinforced, (has some -80 cars as race cars).
Really liked the idea about giga castings from the day i heard about it, easier to get presision in chassis mounting points also,
The MIC model Y only has a rear megacasting though, Berlin and Austin models will get front megacastings as well, and supposedly also structural batteries, but it is more uncertain when they will start using that.

The high pitch noise you mention is audible in my american Model 3 LR 2021 between 70 and 90 kph. It sounds exactly like you can here it in your video round Minute 10.

Same here. China M3 LR built in April 2021. My two-year old daughter loves the sound, though. She's driving her bobby car across the lawn and makes the whining noise.

We love our Model Y and the suspension is great around town but it can get very fatiguing on long trips. Adjustable dampers and an HVAC that doesn't stink over time would make the Model Y perfect.
The Model Y has the same issue with the cabin filters touching the evaporator? That’s my biggest issue with my Model 3. I don’t know if living in a humid environment (Florida) makes it worse. Instead of changing the oil in my car every 3,000 miles I have to foam clean my evaporator and replace my cabin air filters. It’s a disappointing and annoying surprise with my EV ownership so far.
@@kairojya Yup, just had mine done after 9mo/9k mile (also Florida). AC started getting intermittently stinky. Tried Tesla Service to see what would happen. Tech changes filters and cleans the Evap Coils for about $135. He claimed they have a new filter material that is supposed to make it better, and foam prevents growth for a bit. But I'm guessing that unless Tesla comes up with long term fix, those of us in a humid environment, have to clean out the AC system every 6mo to a year...
@@JamesKirk1988 I’ll take every 9 months. I realized that during my last cabin filter interval I had AC set to recirculating instead of having that component on auto. You can set the temperature to auto and the outside/recirc to auto independently. This time I’m leaving that on auto and it seems to work better as the car cycles between exterior and recirculated air.
Adaptive dampers are a must have for any car over 30k imo

I own a Tesla Y 2020 performance +. I would have loved the panoramic windshield of the X and the air suspension. The glass roof is not a big asset for me as I don’t enjoy it unless I’m sitting in the back. The glass roof would have been great if it was clear with either a integrated shade or electrostatic glass. I tried other brands and I must admit that the gear changer on the steering column is much better for back and fort driving than in the consol and as a wheel!!!

Good review. The tightness (harshness?) of the Model Y is one reason I ordered another X instead of replacing my old X with a Y. Hopefully I will get it sometime in 2022.
got a 2021 model y last december. its the best value for ur money. you get performance, tech and efficiency. sure its not luxury but its simple, practical and easy to use.
How good is the self driving in giving way to bicycles when entering and exiting roundabouts where required by law?
I found the model Y suspension quite a bit harsher than my model 3. I would prefer a much softer ride.

when do you plan to go to Croatia and also where will you be going. I live in the east of Croatia so it would be cool if you can come to hang out a little bit. Also there are superchargers not far from here
Bjorn: I have a Y since last Sept. Yep, it rids hard! Sticks to the road like glue. I got it with the factory trailer hitch, so maybe they beefed up the rear suspension. Lots easier to get in and out and I love the cargo room! It's plenty fast. I'm glad I didn't opt for the performance version because my wife told me that if I ever did maximum accel 0-60 she'd probably throw up! I've been warned. I purposely stuck with the 18" wheels because I knew that there would be less air between tread and rim. If I hit a pothole, I'd rather not BEND the rim.
Love your adventures. I like the extra room getting in an out and because it sits higher off the ground.
One of the reasons I stuck to the 19” wheels on my MYLR. I’m in the US though and we have far fewer options here. But given our supercharger network, I still would only go with a Tesla here. I haven’t looked back since making this choice. Noise levels compared to my previous car are amazing. But my previous car was a Kia Stinger GT2 ICE. Amazing car btw, but major gas guzzler.
Ah interesting. I had a Kia Stinger GT Limited which is a GT2 but in Canada. I found my car to be pretty smooth and very quiet. If you're saying the Model Y is even quieter from road noise that is good to know. Lookin forward to it.
I just hope Tesla can keep up with upgrading their supercharger network once they allow other EVs to charge at their locations starting next year. Especially the slower charging ones, like the VW ID.3 which only charges at 120kW might block a few key supercharging locations for a significant amount of time.
I was concerned about the ride comfort but after coming from a verano, I think it's better. I'm fine with it. Thanks for the video.

best things about Tesla or many EVs in general is just entering the car and boom, you can instantly start driving, no keys whatsoever. no pressing an "on" button. just put in Drive and go.

You wondered about the motor noice and I can tell you that our Fremont August made Y has the same motor noises and it makes even more when the battery is preconditioning. Also we love the noises. We're in Michigan and our roads are notoriously bad and I agree that the ride can be a bit rough but it's not that bad either. How much of an improvement are the 18 inch tires for ride comfort?
Bjørn You should test the car with 18 or even 17 inch wheels. Maybe a tyre agop could sponsor the test. The smaller diameter wheels would soften the ride a lot and also much reduce the running costs of the car.

In my Model 3 SR +, 2021, Freemont, I also hear the high pitched noise from the engine, when the back seats are folded down.
I agree about the comparison Y and X. Drove X 75 D a 150.000 km in three years.
Camping mode, sleeping in the model Y would seem luxurious compared to the 3 or X (6 seater).

Hi Bjorn. Because of the high percentage of EVs in norway, are there any actual studies reflecting possible effects (pollution or noise or both)? I am interested if there are any significant effects especially in cities recognisable?
well, i've heard about noise (not actual studies, but a small experiments) - in case of modern ICE cars noise of their engines at first half of RPM is negligable, the most portion of noise is from tyres, so after ~30 kmh there is no difference in noise between modern ICE and EV at all.

There are studies on increased birth weight in Beijing when they controlled the air pollution during the Olympics and studies on effects on IQ of schools being located near highways.
Really sounds as if the model Y needs adjustable dampers and fluid filled bushes to achieve a better ride. I test drove the model Y and could feel and hear the body flexing when going over speedbumps
Hey Björn, you probably know felixba, he got a suspension upgrade for 2500€ for his Model 3 and said it really fixed the only big issue he had with the car.
Obviously having good suspension in the stock version would be better, but for anyone who really wants nice suspension but still wants the benefits the Model Y has over e.g. the ID4 might want to consider that. At the end of the day it's not that much considering you are buying a 50k car and as you said with other cars you sometimes pay extra for e.g. wireless charging and lots of other things, you can easily pay 5000€ just for some extras with cars like the ID4 too :D
Alterations can be used by Tesla if there’s a warranty issue.
I think the noise from the motor is because the trunk is not separate like in the model 3. Try a model 3 with the seats down :)

I really need to get a test drive of a Y. I have an X that I need to replace next year. The downside of the Y so far on my list is the lack of air suspension - I love this on the X. I laughed when you talked about the creaks on the X… yes, mine does the same :) … As for the ride… I am concerned that I will find the Y and 3 just too hard.
We have an S 2019 - air suspension isn’t thaaaat big of a deal, at least not in Norway. Here the potholes make your air suspension feel like Dacia suspension

Thats exactly it! On paper consumption is very similar on all EV's but in real life speed tesla is in it's own league

For me are main reasons why I want to go for tesla are efficiency and charging network. But if they open superchargers for other cars then it almost doesn't matter what car I pick.
how is it if you deflate the tires 2 or 3 psi? I did that in model 3 and it made a difference. range is reduced a little bit.

I think that the MY is feeling more stiff/rigid compared the MX because of the Gigacasted sections. There's far more play in composed car parts compared to one huge, single part.
They aren’t using them yet in the MY !
Maybe a graph with sportiness and comfort as x/y axis could be useful.. based on overall feeling after some extensive testing.

Optimus prime is old model X. Later ones have adaptive air suspension. Much better insulation and so on... We`re waiting for refreshed model X to see what it`s like...
My USA built 2021 Performance Model 3 makes the same sound under heavy acceleration.
11:10 if you press the gas it will overtake on the right. You will see the car go from white to grey.

Bjørn, how does the suspension in this MYLR (with stock 19in) feel vs the M3P (with stock 20in) you owned?
I own a TM3P 2019 with 20" wheels. After TMY LR test (19") I observe the confort of my Perf is better . The silence is better inboard model Y, wind and rolling noises are better under control in my opinion than model 3. I planed to buy model Y Perf but right now I am not so sure because Model Y with 21" is quite sure uncomfortable... Probably is missing an air adaptative suspension. I think that similarly to a lot of SUV, Tesla has hardened the anti-roll bars to balance the body movements in curves due to the overweight vs model 3

@@nanterre38 I just test drove a MYLR with stock 19" Geminis and here's my thoughts. As a reference to compare against I own a 2020 M3P which is an absolutely amazing car which I think is both comfortable and extremely quick. The MYLR might be a bit harsher than the M3P, but not significantly, in my opinion the ride quality is fine. The acceleration is also very good, but of course not quite like my M3P. The biggest difference is off the line, where the MYLR feels quite a bit slower, maybe up to 30 km/h, but from there it takes of quite briskly. Not quite like a M3P, but still surprisingly strong (I could live with it :-). The Acceleration boost should improve it even further, hopefully also in the 0-30 range. Considering to do a swap M3P->MYLR, a tough call :-)
@@fr3238 Yes, performances are good but when we accelerate from stop, the power takes time to arrive ... I never drove TM3LR so may be similar feeling to this model. TM3P, whatever the speed is, acceleration is immediate without latency. Of course, anyone coming from a 150hp diesel will be astonished by the power of TMYLR.

Rough ride equals in my opinion as a lack of vibration dampening. Munro just compared Mustang Mach E and Tesla support frames. Size difference between Ford and Tesla rubber cushioning was self explanatory. Ford cushionings were more than twize the size of cushioning of Tesla. Some may like accuracy or something you may get of a harsh ride, but I like comfort more.
That's motor isolation dampening, not suspension dampening. Munro questioned why Ford needed so much extra motor dampening.
Actually, suspension on Tesla is a league of its own... It`s just setup up to be tight and sporty... Only active suspension would solve that, or maybe SR+ will have more softer ride because of less power...

Very interesting, thanks to Bjørm for this video. There is a repair shop in Germany (AT-Zimmermann) who posted a video on how the M3 and probably also the MY have a ridiculously high pre-tension in the suspension springs. Retrofitting aftermarket springs surprisingly both lowers the car and also reduces bumpiness by a significant amount.

@@Remigius0815 Well, it is not *that* bad but from a 50k car one might expect a better ride. That said, I had the opportunity to test drive an Enyaq 80 which falls in the same price range. Compared to the M3/MY it felt sooo sluggish in terms of acceleration. So I view it more as a trade-off.
Still, fixing the bumpiness is so dead-simple that I don't understand why Tesla does not change it. It literally boils down to using different dampener springs.

So many EVs there! I saw an eGolf, Ampera (Bolt), Model 3 and a Kona all in the first few minutes. Here in the US where I live (Large city in upstate NY) you barely see another ev driver on the road.
LOL since I wrote that comment at 7:20 I have seen 3 more eGolfs (lower bumper LED strips) Now its 8:24 and there is a Mustang Mach E. Man I wish the US adopted EV cars as well as Norway.

9:46 A bit unrelated, but I'm curious, in a roundabout, how will people signal out of the roundabout when the wheel is turned with the plaid models with the yoke steering wheel. The purpose of the stocks is that they don't turn with the wheel. They stay in the same place. That would be an interesting one. :)
Tesla has said that turn signals will be automatic in the future. If you drive with navigation, the car will blink out of the roundabout automatically.
I think I've seen this in another video being told :-)

And also, what happens if I decide to drive elsewhere in the middle of the drive? Should I stop in the middle of the intersection to adjust my destination in order for the blinkers to work? LOL What a joke.

@@jonasdjuvik3460 this has nothing to do with being the future, it is just a massive design flaw which is not innovative at all. It is not solving any problem and instead creates new ones where there were none before. The yoke is just there for the rule of cool, no practical benefits at all. The car is briliant otherwise, which makes it a total shame that the yoke is the only option. The most effective solution would be adaptive steering which changes depending on your speed in order to prevent turning the steering wheel too much for the buttons to be still reachable, but this could make driving very unpredictable and the steering feel very jerky.

Will 18" fit on the LR model Y? I'd like to put 18" on mine but when I asked Tesla they said they don't recommend switching to aftermarket wheels. I was worried about clearance on the calipers as there's only about half an inch of clearance with my 19" stock wheels. I was hoping to just find some model 3 take offs
Physically the fit, but are not allowed within European Union. In Norway no problem, in Switzerland again not possible.

Bjorn, I’ve heard that the white interior is a little more stiffer than the black one. Maybe it is from the seats. Is there anyway you could test that? Maybe borrow a black interior Model Y?
From the reviews I've seen, people consider the white seats even more comfortable than the black seats.
I noticed my M3 LR 2021 also have this high pitch sound at higher speeds.
Great video Bjorn, a very informative, balanced and unbiased review of the MY. I've got a Q4 50 on order but I would likely have ordered the MY had it been available in the UK, currently we can't even place an advanced order. Looking forward to the Croatia trip.

@Bjørn Nyland :) It is hard to compare TMX with TMY. Because TMX has been evolving since the launch. If you compare TMX Raven model to TMY then I'd say TMX is a vehicle in its own class. The amount of luxury and automation is mind blowing. You do not get that in every premium product. TMX with 7 seats has no real competition in fact. It seats 7 adults, and has amount of space for both passengers and luggage no passenger car on the market can offer. Towing capacity of over 2.2 t , simply amazing view through the windshield, falcon wing doors with easy access in every situation, starting from placing small children. Adaptive suspension is an ingenious and offers fantastic level of comfort on the long trips.
TMY has its own segment which it will partially take over from TM3, TMS and some part of the TMX marked (mainly due "growth pain" for previous models). In my opinion TMY needs an immediate strut replacement (there are luckily aftermarked alternatives on the marked already). TMY looks like a good vehicle for small families.
I just testes the German Y performance. It’d way better than the LR I tested about 8 months ago. The suspension is much smoother and the overall roughness is very much improved! I have one in order and therefore I was very worried it would be to uncomfortable for me. I’m so glad Tesla has improved this problem on performance!
4:00 The whining noise is when the front motor get engaged in hard acceleration.
This is correct. I have an American Model Y. So it’s not specific to China. If you floor it’s the high pitch whine is literally the electrons flowing and turning the drivetrain. I love it. The sound is like you’re entering warp speed in Star Wars.
You hear more rear motor noise because Model Y’s trunk area is connected to the rear seat area. You will hear similar noise if you fold the rear seats of Model 3.

Problem is they use monotube with high gas pressure you need about 40-50 kg per shock just to make them start move, this makes the ride rough, you can make a car stiff and hard but smooth with the right skocks
Bjørn, could you maybe try if the harshness gets noticeably reduced if you decrease tire pressure by, lets say 0.3-0.5 bar?

@@bjornnyland Disagree. Tire pressure has always been an efficiency vs. comfort vs. durability (higher pressure wears center of tire) trade-off, as long as you stick to reasonable levels.

@@NO3V If you lower tire pressure below recommendation the tire will not have the right contact area with the road making it unsafe to drive with. It will also wear uneven. Its just bad practise to do so. The car manufacturer do in fact test whats the safest and best tire pressure - so be smart - just follow recommendation.

After driving french car for 13 years and then switch to model 3 for the last 2 years i sometimes miss the comfort especially on long trips but on shorter trips i love the sportines of the model 3. But im not impressed of the build quality sadly, like now i have to change the tail light for second time, both times it has started to crack by it self. Il problaly replace it in 2 years time before the warranty runs out, dont know yet if it will be a model y or something else. I like the ioniq 5 but the interior isnt that great for how much the car costs.

Genuine question: why are you indicating your turn INTO a roundabout? Is that obligatory in Norway? Here (Austria) you usually only indicate when leaving a roundabout.
It's to increase the efficiency of the roundabout. Once you understand how roundabouts work you will also do the same.
I think I know what you mean: you want to indicate for the person behind you that you are going for let's say a "left turn" through the roundabout and that makes a lot of sense to me. But what if it's a roundabout with 5 or more exits? I think any indicating before entering such a roundabout would most likely just confuse me (and others) then.
If you are going "straight through" a roundabout, you don't indicate anything, or do you?
