    This unit was on my wish list but since I wanted two subs I decided to go with two of the Kef KF92 subs. The cost of two DB3D subs was simply to much for my wallet. However, it sounds like a winner.

    Nice to see more subs enter the small (apartment living) theater arena. The price is way up there, and wouldn't be able to buy with my spare change 🙂, but sounds like a great little sub.

    • @TokeBoisen
      @TokeBoisen 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      If you're feeling adventurous, going DIY with some solid MDF or HDF and a couple high-excursion woofers and a beefy PA amp might get you most of the way there for a fraction of the price. 12" cube could probably fit a couple 10" Daytons, and a good DSP could take that to amazing levels.
      Alternatively build two with a driver each for better performance and placement.

      SVS 3000 micro is probably your best bet for budget quality tiny subs. Could easily get a pair of them for under half the price of this sub and 2 subs will always sound better than 1 and is actually better for people in an apartment than just a single subwoofer for multiple reason I could detail for you if you were interested.

  • @techsamurai11
    @techsamurai11 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Wow, this is exactly what the SVS3000Micro could attain in its 2nd attempt - it doesn't need to go to 10hz but if it can maintain a flatline response to 20hz hovering around the $1,000 mark, it'll be the premier subwoofer. This is also very impressive given its size and the fact that it would look nice in my living room.

    Another great review and video, thanks. If you're looking for more demo material check out the open credits of "Godzilla King of the Monsters". @@TokeBoisen good looking out. Maybe it's not about new tech, it's about getting it to reasonable prices. Although I still think KC62 is a marvel at its size. Assuming you absolutely need the punchiest, smallest sub with a 1000 watt amp.

    Good morning, First, appologize about my ignorance about sub's and my limited English. But I want to ask an importan question to me, because I'm looking for a subwoofer for Home theater. I read about this DB3D and I have a big doubt, which is discussed in this video. At one point in the video, you comments, that "it gave me a little vibration througth the floor, and up to my chair but it's not enough to put pressure on your body", and here is my question regarding the size of the driver. It is the size of the driver determinant to helps to move that air, that moves your body? Specifically, i can buy a B&W ASW-4000 or an ASW-850 that my seller has, that weigh 2 and even 3 times more than this DB3D and have a much bigger box...Although i think its speed, is far from being that of this DB3D, and i know the DB3D match better with newer loudspeakers,... will I get a better hit or pressure on the body with a subwoofer like the ASW4000 or ASW850 with 15' drivers? Honestly I prefer "the presasure on my body, than a perfect match with my main speakers, because the sub i'm looking for is for Home theater and not for "audiophile" stereo.
    I hope i was clear with my basic english

    • @TokeBoisen

      @@TokeBoisen thanks, makes sense

    • @TokeBoisen
      @TokeBoisen 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@pulDag, there's also a bunch of other factors to it. Shane doesnt measure it, but I'm pretty sure if we took a distortion measurement close-mic to the sub, we'd be looking at substantial distortion due to the smaller drivers being pushed close to max excursion at those frequencies. B&W are probably banking heavily on room gain to help it out, and I know it has built-in limiters to raise the high-pass frequency if the unit is pushed to protect the drivers, so 97 dB is a number with a lot of asterisks, though that is not Shane's fault.

    • @outsane1
      @outsane1 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Whilethat may be true you are still dealing with a tiny 8"driver with what looks to be a fairly limited xmax. What is the size of the room that was performed in? A tiny 8' x10' theater with no windows and a sealed door will be drastically different than someone's living room. I would also be willing to wager that distortion was at super high levels at that point. You also can't hear 10hz at that level it is simply a pressure wave. Yet he said he felt no pressure from the sub so that says there was no usable output.

    • @TokeBoisen
      @TokeBoisen 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@outsane1, it's true that you need a significant amount of pressure to feel it at 10 Hz, and room-size is always a factor in subwoofer purchases, so this thing is probably not meant to play in a large living room at reference levels. I'd go so far as wager that B&W would claim it's not meant for home theatre and they would point you at their larger DB models for that.
      I mentioned distortion above as well, I agree with you there, though I'm pretty sure B&W touted high xmax for these when they launched. However much that is, can't say.

    In a way it is sad to see high quality British audio products following the fad of controlling via a smart phone. If standard pots remain then okay (except for increasing prices to accommodate phone receiving electronics) but if pure sound is the objective then the fewer electronic gizmos the better.
    It cannot be denied that cell phone frequencies close to audio gear can sometimes be heard and will usually impose some alterations in circuit functions. Phones in some recording and radio studios (I know the BBC best) are physically sealed away in Faraday boxes and have been for years.
    One is either listening to music/(home theater if one must) OR is available to be telephoned or make phone calls. It is a matter of respecting a given activity at the highest possible quality as well as one's own freedom to do these things. Regrettably, we seem to have become slaves of communication devices.
    I would like to see the high quality speaker makers in the UK, France, USA, Denmark, Italy and Germany only making new product lines when materials science and more reliable un-colored amplification justify new practices to substantial sonic advantage. There should be no necessity for remote control (especially via crude cell phone tech) but non RF remote controls could be optional. Products dependent upon any type of remote control are not finished products.
    A narrow range of products but refined tooling, assembly and tuning IN HOUSE is achievable and has the huge advantage of top rate QC, loyal, experienced staff and sufficient money set aside for R&D but not implying that new products will result, for this pressurizes R&D personnel. Sir Jonathan Ive left Apple because of this when he wanted to improve upon existing products and adapt some for important new technology with least possible waste. Indeed, like many great audio engineers (Walker and Vereker come to mind), Ive preferred incremental development and this clashed with Apple's ways. He is, by the way, a devoted audio man who wandered into IT.
    Reputation is either earned or is the result of high pressure promotion costing a lot (as it sometimes relies in bribery endorsements) but where sheer quality and product support can last for decades, with a fair fee. One would expect the builder of one's house (or successors) to point and tile and to pay for proper maintenance or a possible weakness developing.
    The customer base for products of excellence tends to be self sustaining and if an annual 'insurance' fee is paid this can be a hedge against the expense of transport to base and component swapping. Invariably this customer base crosses generations and spreads by actual listening in situ then when occasional improvement appear for the reasons above we customers renew.
    Where assembly and QC are outsourced to such as Chinese large. general sub groups of giant commercial groups quality declines. China makes some superb audio products but they tend to be by small companies not seeking massive profits and run by 'masters' of their craft. Our best companies in Europe and the USA sometimes resort to 'generalist' east and south Asian countries to save money and that is when the rot sets in.

    I do not for a second believe a 12" cube with 8" woofers is going to do 10hz. At least not in any meaningful way. For the price you could get a real sub . I will have less than that in to mine and should be able to hit very close to 120db at 10hz. Much less than that and you may as well skip it anyway. Note this will take a pair of custom 24" woofers in 11cf sealed with 4-5k watts each. There is no replacement for displacement. This is just as true in subs as drag racing.
