That's just it, it wasn't all the same. Example, even back then I didn't consider Poison to be heavy metal, or any of the other glam bands, heavy metal to me was Black Sabbath, Judas Priest, Iron Maiden, very early Motley Crue. Thrash was Megadeth, Anthrax and early Metallica. I put Ratt, Dokken, Bon Jovi, etc in the glam/hair band category which some of the bands did have metal elements here and there, but the lyrics were far from metal which to me is an important part of what makes true metal, metal. Dio sounded heavy metal to me. Even back then I had all these categories and it hasn't changed
I don't know about that. S far back as I can recall, the Metalheads didn't mix well with the Glam Rockers. The Stoners didn't like the punks and vice versa.. thers always been different camps and genres
Because of the way that scene exploded and over saturation spread throughout the industry, I don't think many fans today understand how unique RATT truly was. This was played out over the course of 'Invasion' and 'Dancing' through songs like "Closer", "It Doesn't Matter", and even straight ahead stuff like "Never Use Love" where I'd be willing to bet that the song was built around a pre-existing vocal melody instead of "here's the tune, write some lyrics please". Dropping a bridge AFTER a chorus and all sorts of crazy little sh1t doesn't draw your attention as a teenage music fan but when you reach the point where you can actually write a good song, that stuff jumps off the tape and makes you say, "Whoa. Wait a minute". And if you go back to the beginning of it all, it's pretty apparent that RATT just didn't give a fvck about 3 minutes and 30 seconds. The original "Back For More" is just perfection, and it points the way and direction that these guys liked to write music. Lastly, I would be remiss as a drummer if I didn't point out the thick-assed bounce that these guys could summon at-will, making parts like the solo section of "Wanted Man" just swing like a motherfvcker.
I'm a lifelong metalhead. Been metal since the late 1970s. When thrash hit, that was my groove! Exodus is probably my favorite thrash band. But metal is metal. I love Death Angel, Overkill, Forbidden, Slayer, Vio-lence. But I also love Dokken, Crue (Shout-era), Ratt, and all that killer stuff. Thrash, for me, is the be-all, end-all! But I dig all the hard rock/metal from the Golden Era of the 1980s. And, dude, my CD collection is loaded with a variety. But, as you so eloquently say, Metal Rules! 🤘
Heavy Metal has been my favorite music genre since I was five years old in 1983. I love all types of music but my music collection is at least 90 percent Heavy Metal. Just like you i have never been ashamed of it either. I got picked on in middle school and high school because of my love for Heavy Metal in the 90's but I didn't care. MTV and radio did not decide for me what I listened to back then, my ears did.
I agree, metal, prog etc are my favourite genres, but in my cd collection,I have the police, the jam,Gary numan/ tubeway army etc. Infact I saw Gary numan ,live in Leeds, the day after seeing,Jane's addiction in Manchester the day before back in June,he is still great live. But,aside from , Rush,it's opeth that are my favourite band.
Metalheads strut around announcing other genres they listen to like it’s some sort of big accomplishment. 😂 Um, normal people enjoy more than one kind of music.
I'm 60 and back in the day I loved all of the good heavy music. I didn't give two shits about anything else. By the way I'm still into all of the good heavy music and will be until I die.
Oh please! Motley Crue in 83/84 were my top dogs. Loved Ratt too and boy o boy I love Dokken. But, my favorite metal band is Mercyful Fate. All cool. Now, my favorite female singer is Sade. My favorite band is The Beach Boys. Why lock yourself into only one style etc??!
My mother saw everybody i concert. From Ratt to the grateful dead to Cher!! She loves all kinds of music. She liked what she liked back then! And still does. She does not give a shit!! 🤘🤘
I remember in 83/84 there being just Heavy Metal. Motley Crue toured with Ozzy, Ratt had killer guitar tone. Judas Priest and Iron Maiden were right up there. Slippery When Wet and Theater Of Pain by Bon Jovi & Motley Crue is when I heard Glam for the first time. Fing Nikki Sixx started quoting all of these 70s Glam bands "They were always influences". Then Poison & Cinderella came already labeled glam from the get go. Poison nailed the look and poor musicianship of the NY Dolls but Cinderella basically cause of the name & they first toured with Bon Jovi. The sub genres got all out of hand.
I loved Glam and Thrash, I had to buy 3 sets of metal cassettes, my dad kept sledge hammering them. He was a Jehovah's Witness, My friend introduced me to the Back n black album and I was hooked. Quiet Riot Cum on feel the noise and Bang your head were the only metal songs I remember hearing on AM radio! Actually Jump from Van Halen too.
If you play guitar and aren't a fan of Warren DeMartini, something is seriously wrong with you. The guy is incredible. It is funny that this video just popped up..because about 2 hours ago, I was playing along with Ratt's, 'Round and Round', on my guitar haha. I hadn't played or listened to that song for years..but it came up on the TH-cam music app and I to see if I could still remember how to play it. Warren is amazing.
Thank you! I'm always saying that back in the 80s you had heavy metal and thrash. There was no such thing as glam or hair metal, that's revisionist history. I started out with early Crue (still got my high school patched jacket, lol), Ratt, WASP, Van Halen, etc., and got into Priest, Maiden, and then Megadeth, Metallica. Didn't go down the death/black metal route. To me, all that nu metal isn't metal, it's industrial - never liked it. Over 40 years now and I still listen to 80s metal, some thrash and proud of it, and a smattering of new bands. I'll listen to other music too, but you're right, metal is the base. Metal Rules!
I remember grown up in West Palm Beach Florida where I was born and raised listening to Michael Jackson then it turned into Def Leppard Motley Crue Twisted Sister Quiet Riot Ratt then it evolved to Metallica Megadeth Slayer Testament Flotsam and Jetsam then death obituary sadist violence deicide. A lot of those I bought peaches record store in West Palm Beach. I remember buying poison by mistake in a year later buying death leprosy add peaches record store
I never understood how ratt was ever considered as glam metal. They were pretty heavy especially the deep tracks on their early stuff. They were around way before poison and other bands they got linked to. Hey ozzy looked more glam than ratt during the ultimate sin tour.
Metal rules, no doubt. I was recently watching a video on Nicko, and he was playing for Pat Travers and was a different animal. I never got into Pat( to my dismay ). After the video I found some killer Pat T, music. DOC you were right. Good stuff. Thanks
Our era Ruled... I grew up in it and come on... There were only a few fans that got real tribal. I agree that Exodus and Vio-lence ruled and still rule today. Forbidden too. Oh... Yacht Rock Rules as well. 😂😂😂😂
Wasp ratt doken Cinderella la guns, early quiet riot and motley crue.all good bands wasp was as metal as they came,n ratt la guns Cinderella didn't put out a bad song
I was in high school in the mid eighties and we loved motley, ratt, fate, priest, krokus, van halen, etc, etc,.The scales tipped into the shit, cheesy, fake, area with the start of the CHEESE of one artist who is to blame: bon phoni. After his popularity, along came all the bullshit bands. It got so out of hand that grunge ( which i cant stand) had to come and change things, but 1980 to 1985 was golden for excellent rock/ metal
I miss the days before there were a million subgenres. It was ALL heavy metal! 🤘
🤘🤟
Indeed!

Exactly.
Merry🎄Christmas Ralph and all my Metal Head Brothers here!! Thanks for all your hard Work Ralph. Be safe all, and have a kick ass end to 2024!!
I love early Ratt. I also love early Dokken and WASP. I love Metal and Rock in general from all the sub-genres.

I miss when Suicidal Tendencies made thrash with Rocky George and Mike Clark
Thanks for the quality entertainment all year Doc
My pleasure!
It's "poser" to pretend to dislike what genuinely appeals to you in an attempt to conform to the preferences of others.
Everything was just considered metal until Crüe released Theater of Pain which I've always said started the pretty boy glam scene.
Everyone liked Warren, Vito, EVH, Vai, Jake, if they were great they were great.

Forbidden!!
People who were truly into music in those days listened to every genre of music
"From Abba to Immortal"- well put.
Damn I miss the 80's.
When I was a kid I must admit seeing CC DeVille rip a solo was impressive.
The creams always gonna rise. There's some FANTASTIC music to go back and cherry pick from all of it. Even the butt rock.
Wishing you a very merry XMAS, and a great new year, have loved listening, stay safe Doc, love from Melbourne Australia, !! 🇦🇺
Merry Christmas and Happy new year!

Who wouldn't like what Warren does, he was killing it, such great tone/riffs/licks!

It wasn't until 87 when I finally had to step back from Motley and the like because it seemed like they were chasing the glam / "hair" trends.
They were always a Glam band.......Always.
Loved Girls, Girls, Girls album ❤❤
I never understood how ratt was ever considered as glam metal. They were pretty heavy especially the deep tracks on their early stuff. They were around way before poison and other bands they got linked to. Hey ozzy looked more glam than ratt during the ultimate sin tour.
Thrash metal kicks Glam rocks ass!
Wrong.
Glam, is so much better ❤❤
😂

Put some Knocked Loose in your world.

Nice, I would have loved to see DeMartini go heavier.
😂
Gary is the Real Deal. Great player and great guy. I am proud to be a Bay Area Musician.

I always respected Holt and his riffs and the bands music, but Exodus had 2 missing components. Songs and singers, they missed the boat on both.
I would agree if they did not do Bonded By Blood. A Thrashterpiece. imo
Rob duke's was the best vocalist they had
