Given Szayelaporro's background, it sounds to me like he was a member of Unit 731, but the writer realised that wouldn't get very far in Japan, so they renamed it as "Alchemist" of "A nation", even though it's very clearly Unit 731. This would also explain why Szayelaporro went to Hell, because the people that were in that unit were some of the most evil people to ever exist.
I think you are probably absolutely right - certainly something of that ilk.

I had no idea about this Unit 731. I was shocked. But even more surprising was the fact that in 1946 "The US government offered full political immunity to high-ranking officials who were instrumental in perpetuating crimes against humanity, in exchange of the data about their experiments." This is why I like the concept of the early Soul Society in Bleach - because it reflects the reality: all organisations have evil within them, and quite often the evil is the ground-stone of those organisations.

He's truly among the darker villains of the saga especially with those atrocities committed as a human. It adds to his general sinister nature and deadly willingness to do the worst for knowledge while inflicting suffering. Him ending up in hell and then meeting another end is quite fitting.
I'll take Cien or Szayel as Espada 0 over Yammy. Yammy is just a let down.
Yea i kno when i saw that 1 disappear i was like holy crap no way is he stronger than ulquiorra and then i saw what happened and yea i was correct lol his zero wasnt earned kool twist but didnt live up to it for me.
Kenpachi said it himself in the novel that fighting Cien ACTUALLY felt like fighting a 0 rank compared to boring Yammy.

Honestly Ulquiorra as the 0 Espada would’ve been cool.
Yami just never felt like a threat at any point after his first appearance. He was humbled by uryu and the punching bag of byakuya and zaraki

Shout out to the fact that in novel, the tricks Cien tries to use against Kenpachi includes the whole organ doll thing. Which doesn't work only and solely because Kenpachi's organs are so strong that the tiny doll versions are so strong he can't break them.
Gotta love how consistently OP Kenpachi is in all media, it's beautiful lol.
The hypothetical future of child Cien is so interesting. Even a teen version hundreds of years later would be so incredibly powerful.

Zaraki is the main reason I love Bleach. Hype him up or overpower doesn't matter, he's got that 🔥 only a few characters have. The other character I can think of would be Escanor.
In one of the old novels,8th Kenpachi Azashiro also tries to damage Zaraki's organs by entering into his body and enlarging but fails. Also his Bankai which has Hado 96 combos fails to do anything much to his opponent.
Honestly, Zaraki didn't choose Kenpachi title but it's the title that choose him.

Yeah real talk not every character can just pull off being the most OP out of nowhere and staying that way without being like restricted and held back from the plot too much. Like somehow Kenpachi feels like the most OP character but also like he couldn't just solve the whole story because of it. It's a unique balance that yeah I can only really think of Escanor pulling off as well as Zaraki.
Yup that's the same novel as this one with Roka and Cien too. Utter beast.
Imagine if the hell arc kicks off and we actually got to see the other Kenpachi in general, but more so imagine if Zaraki had to fight them (or at least the ones he didn't fight yet).
Like could there be anything more METAL than straight up oni ogre looking Bankai Zaraki in HELL fighting the other Kenpachi? Not a chance.
Given the baskstory of Cien as well as the backstory of Ikomikidomoe, my personal take is that all of this info from the light novels is actually a means of indirectly hyping up Barragan to have been wayyyy stronger than he was portrayed in the main series. Imagine the power that was necessary to keep Cien in line as well as earn respect and caution from Ikomikidomoe who was strong enough to challenge a younger Yamamoto. Baraggan may not have the most reiatsu out of all hollows, but evidently Respira is no joke.
I may be biased because Barry is my favorite bleach character, but It feels like his manga appearance was so underwhelming... I definitely wanted Kubo to release a novel explaining more about him (like with Ulquirorra) because he seems to be a anomaly even between hollows (resembling a human/soul reaper and being a Vasto Lorde born naturally in the dawn of creation instead of following the natural cycle of life)
That's because Respira IS no joke. It's not like other Hollow abilities. It is time. It is entropy. Its power is absolute. No matter HOW strong you are. No matter how tough you are. NOTHING is eternal (Except Aizen, but he doesn't count). Even if you are the strongest espada. Even by orders of magnitude compared to Barrigan, Respira will sap your strength and wither your body.
Remember, Barrigan was NOT defeated by any attack, but through somebody turning his own power against him. That should tell you something.
Fr Barragan will be revealed to have a part of the Soul king next.
@@RunicRasol Facts bro! Barragan is one of my favourite anime characters. Also liked his crude personality. He could have one shotted Soifon and that fodder Umeda if he wanted. That being said, spiritual pressure is a huge and relevant thing in Bleach. If Barragan releases Respira, any character with stronger Reiatsu can negate it by using Bleach logic.

He was an old king who's arrogance and time made him weak and reliant on his 1 trick.

Szayel has always been my favourite Espada, not only is his design amazing but his personality and how much it took to bring him down even though he was only number 8 solidified him as one of my favourite characters in Bleach.
Personally him and nnoitra are my least favorite characters
I loved Szayel for the same reason, seeing the other arrancar filled me with dread when they were encountered because of how hard it was to kill him. Ulquiorra, Nnoitra and Grimmjow feel like noteworthy espada in that regard, because of how long their fights were. But nothing compared to how terrifying Szyael was, he felt unbeatable, just like Aizen before Aizen came around. He seemed so busted at the time I couldn't possibly imagine the other espada, only to be kinda let down. Nnoitra is my favorite espada but his fights were only "alright", at least he fought for a long time. He got Kenpachi to release pretty quickly
Personally wish we could have seen more of him and especially his brother Yylfordt!
@@Sweetlesishere You are right about that. After facing Szayel I expected Espada number 0 to 7 to be op or very strong but somehow not all delivered .
@@meditation8tv Imo only 1,2 and 4 delivered on that feeling of OP. The others seem pretty lame. Demon Slayer does it best in showing disparity between ranks for example we clearly see the difference between Upper and Lower Moons where as Espada’s power scaling felt all over the place despite them being ranked based off their spiritual pressure or whatever.

Personally i find the novels great supplementary material. Narita understands bleach deeply, and it shows in the fights and scenarios he constructs (surely with feedback from Kubo) that so seamlessly fit into the world and lore of bleach. The power scaling so to say of the characters gives the feeling sometimes of fan service but really if you look at bleach as a whole anybody in the TYBW could mud stomp their soul society self, and so characters in the future being significantly stronger than themselves but roughly equal to other characters makes sense. That's just my two cents on it, it's very fun seeing more light novel coverage on this channel. Looking forward to more :)

Honestly, Szayelaporro Granz is my favorite espada and one of my favorite villains in bleach, especially after his return in the hell arc, he looks soo cool.

@@SemekiIzuio Yeah it really took away the intensity. Anime censoring seriously ruins some fights beacuase of that. The one I'll always bring up is Hiyori getting halfed in the Manga vs. stabbed in the anime. Shinji, a captain-level shingigami is just freaking out about Hiyori just getting stabbed once. It wouldn't make much sense (charcaters get stabbed in Bleach all the time and end up fine). Now slice my subordinate in half? Yeah, I'd be screaming AIIIIIIZZEEEEEN too!
@@jacksonwhitfield9283 oh yeah I remember that, at that point I had seen the anime first before manga and just rolled my eyes cause of how ridiculous shinji was acting over a stab wound plus the lack of enough blood it didnt look serious. I didnt blame bleach it was just a confusing moment to take in when hinamori ge pierced multiple times was alot more tensive then hyoris one stab. There are a few more that sorely lack blood to demonstrate how bad the wounds are, I think ichigo getting beat by grimjow the first time was savage in the manga. First time ichigo looked severely beaten, I loved it!

Its impressive how a Hollow can be so humble as to feel mad respect for the man that pulled off a crazy technique as Mugetsu and talking like she doesn't deserve to wield it herself even in the face that she's surely going to die by recreating that same technique. As if she didnt earned to have it even when she's betting her life to do so.

Nice to see this video I have both books and one day I’m going to read them when I learn Japanese.
Szayel was always my favorite Espada because of his scientific persona, quirky abilities, 8 being my fav # and his beautiful pink hair.
I think it would be epic for him to come back and be a great 2nd epic villain for ichigos son as they both age and get older.
Hell have Cien fight zaraki ultimately lose then ichigos son fight zaraki and become the next Kenpachi.
That would be interesting in my opinion.

I really liked SAFWY. New Soul Reapers, new Arrancars, Szayelaporro's backstory, it was all great to see.
Like experiencing Bleach from the beginning all over again, everything was new and fascinating.
I think the concept of this character is absolutely amazing.
Great video from start to finish. Kubo could literally do a light novel to explain the origin story of each character in chronological order without revealing who the character is reprised as in the Bleach universe until the very last chapter. That would be epic.
Light novels aren't canon in the bleach universe

I stumbled upon Cien months ago on the wiki and didn't really get to look into him but the BBS preview and your video cleared up everything I think
This was a really great video, I didn't know too much about these guys and I really enjoyed it
I feel like we just never got to see what the upper echelons of the areancar could really do as is the case with hailbel, Barragan, and starrk and honestly I don’t think we never got to see them go all out
Gotta remember that by the time Szael Aporro separated, Barragan was #1, Neliel was #3 and Noitora was way weaker than her(in the present he becomes #5 and seems close to Neliel), meaning that the level of strength within the Spada was much lower.
So the clone might actually be weaker than Stark, Ulquiorra and Yammi.
Read a comment about Kenpachi saying that he was the true #0
Nel was WAY more powerful than Noitora, but could not access her full power, due to her damaged mask. Even so, at a mere fraction of her power she was able to put Noitora on the back foot, until the #5 espada realized she wasn't able to go all out, and turned the tables on her.
As for Barrigan. His power is insane. Not in terms of raw power, but in terms of what Respira does.
And Ulquiora was powerful, but I dont know how well he would fare against Stark, or Barrigan in a fight. Barrigan was practically invincible until they managed to haxx a way for his power to be turned on him, and Stark put up a HELL of a fight against some of the top tier captains. Shunsui & Ukitake would likely have given Ulquiora quite the run for his money if they came to blows.
@@RunicRasol The Espada numbers are about reiatsu, not ability, that's why Yammi is #0, so your Barrigan statement doesn't really work.
The other is even worse, about Neliel being much stronger than Noitora, she was in her Ressurrection when she showed being much stronger, but the transformation is a huge boost as we see when Ichigo fights both Grimmjow and Ulquiorra, Grimmjow goes from not being able to keep up at all, to being slightly stronger than Ichigo, meanwhile Ulquiorra goes from being slightly weaker(or maybe about the same level) to Ichigo, to kicking the crap out of him(even before Segunda Etapa).
When Nel fought Noitora in base, she wasn't really able to do much to him after the initial surprise?
Her powers were completely fine, she only lost it after using her Ressurrection started straining her too much, she was way more powerful than him in that form, but in base they were evenly matched, i'd even say that he was more powerful, from what i remember after the initial strike(that was pretty big), she didn't land a single blow to him, while Noitora was constantly pushing her back with his superior physical strength.

you're misremembering this, she went all out both in base and then in Ressurrection, then after defeating him, she reverted back losing her powers, there was no him overtaking her.

I think I can give an explanation as to why Yylfordt isn’t as aggressive when first introduced. I think that when both brothers were still one, both of their somewhat prominent personalities must have negatively amplified with each other. Like for Szayelaporro, without his brother’s aggressive fighting style, he’s calmer and acts more like the manipulative scientist we know, and as for his brother, without Szayelaporro’s crazy persona, he doesn’t go in charging like a maniac, but still someone head on fighter. Cien was a testament of what Szayelaporro was like both brothers personalities are combined
At my first run on Bleach series, I didn't liked Szayelaporro that much, I kinda hated him, but now, after consuming the manga and novels, he might be one of my favorites characters now. Even Cien is really cool. Granz Gang.
I know Tommo used the word "menacing" about Cien but I just heard "Menos-ing". :D

It was confirmed in the SAFWY's postscript that character's backstories, abilities, names (like Roka), personalities, etc. Narita got directly from Kubo himself.
I hope they animate this. I wanna see Cien and Roka on the screen and Ashido again too.

A lot of Spirits are forever concepts that were adapted into CFYOW.
1)Zaraki vs Cien was similar to Zaraki vs Hikone(resurrection form)
2)Rokka and Kid Cien, similar to Hikone and Aura
3)Cien being a powerful Arrancar/Vasto Lorde under Barragan - similar to Ikomikidomoe serving Barragan
4)Azashiro having a bitter past with Kyoraku, similar to Tokinada and Kyoraku's bitter relationship- Tokinada was 2 D evil
5) Rokka's power is similar to Enrakyōten's power.
One can see many similarities
I am just wondering, but isn't hell szayel kinda similiar to cien? Also battle thirsty, jumping straight into close combat and avoids those 'magic tricks'. Could it be that original szayel and original ilfordt merged again, but in hell? (;
Nice observation, yeah - Hell Szayel is definitely different to the original version in many ways it seems.
I hate his character but love his design.
Being stronger than Yammy at 30% of power is one hell of a Espada
He isn’t stronger that Yammy at 30%,in context of novel right before he acquiring his 30% power there was a glimpse of his full power,which is stronger than Yammy.
Later in the novel Cien at full power said that Barragan/Starrk/Full Power Yammy could deal very much damage to him if they fought in battle.

@@aidandonnelly8637 he is weak if you consider last generation of Espada weak in general,including Barragan and Cifer R-2 because at full power he is strongest among them as was stated in every canonical material,and AA Byakuya and AA Zaraki weak whom he almost defeated and bring on the verge of death as stated in both manga and Databook.
@@zazabgfd963 They certainly didn't seem like they were on the verge of death when they came strolling back into soul society with minor injuries. That whole fight put more emphasis on their rivalry as opposed to Yami as their opponent.

But their soldiers in manga said that they were barely standing.And Databook that was written by Kubo himself expended on that matter, and stated that his final form is the proof of his strength as 0 Espada ,and that he almost gravely wounded 2 strong captains that are pride of Gotei 13 .

I always said that Yami’s buffoonery should have been a plot point, a consequence of his power being suppressed and that he should of gained power and intelligence when transforming making him very dangerous, but no buffoon to the very end and made the 0 spot inconsequential.
Could have also just...y'know. Gave him a reason to be suppressed. Like people in Bleach love talking about "destroying Los Noches", but we never actually see anyone doing substantial enough damage to it to make those statements matter besides Ulquiorra and maybe that one cero from Yammy. But even that's a bit of a stretch. Maybe make Yammy a being completely lacking on consciousness and not a moron. More like a completely unstoppable monster and dip to the complete opposite extreme that NEEDS to be defeated lest Hueco Mundo itself genuinely be destroyed along with everyone in Los-Noches through his unadulterated rampage. Give him some serious ass power that has a REASON to earn his number.
It would make sense since Wonderweiss is an example of sacrificing intelligence and free will for power. Yammy could have been another case. Literally any dip to either extreme would have worked

Not necessarily, although certainly the most ancient, living Hollows are likely to be Vasto Lorde as they'd have had to survive all that time.
I always despised Szayelaporro. Something about his personality REALLY rubbed me the wrong way. BUT, that just goes to show you how good of a job Kubo did in writing him. You're supposed to dislike and actively root against the villain. I took GREAT pleasure in what Mayuri did to him. I remember reading it weekly and going, "THANK GOD. THANK YOU MAYURI. GET HIM OUT OF THESE PANELS." Lol.
Another great video, a bit mixed on the light novel myself but it had tons of interesting ideas

Now a fight between Hollow White (Complete Vasto Lorde with Shihakusho) and Cien Grantz would be an interesting bout.
I believe Grimmjow is also there among the strongest arrancars. He has gotten really strong since his defeat by Ichigo. He consumed a powerful hollow and also trained well post arrancar arc. When Zaraki visited Hueco Mundo he mistook Nnoitra's Reiatsu with Grimmjow and this was just after the arrancar arc before him eating the hollow and training.
Ehh. Harribel said that Stark and Barragan were another level so I'd say he still has a bit of a way to go.
He does have techniques which let's him deal with stronger guys tho
God after reading his expanded background I think he’s even scarier and creepier than Mayuri. I mean both are mad scientist type, but Ranz more so because while Mayuri does his research out of curiosity, Granz does it out of pure self interest with extreme ecstasy. Hell his origin sound like he came straight out of horror film

Wah same I really which they translate the rest of the novels. I was upset back then when UNMASKED 3 book wasnt either but I get it, bleach was loosing traction. That's no excuse now to get the novels adapted in some way
Honestly, there are far more other things within the lore of Bleach that I wish Kubo would explain and flesh out over more backstory from this Espada. I don’t understand what Kubo’s obsession is with this character.. I’ve never found him to be THIS interesting to the point of constantly bringing him back with more backstory and lore. It feels like it’s all coming out of left field if I’m being completely honest. He was never positioned in the original story to be anything other than the scientist Espada whose fight went on for entirely too long; not someone of greater importance like Ulquiorra was, for example.
Give us more new original villains/characters, the original Gotei 13 backstory, the Quincy war from 1000 years ago, more Soul King & Zero Squad background, expand the knowledge of how all the different realms exactly function within the greater world of Bleach, more explanation on Ichigo’s actual powers, is Aizen fused with his Zanpakuto powers or what? more info on Grimmjow & Nel in present day, more Hell arc stuff.. Literally anything but more Syzel Apporo lol come on Kubo

Aizen has been heavily implied to be completely fused with his Zanpakuto.
The thing is i can see kubo trying to not make the characters empty he wants them all to have some interesting backstory at least the ones that had a bit off bigger role like espada and captains

Honestly, chalking the whole thing up to "We need the Zero Espada to be something imposing and impressive instead of the remarkably sad, sad joke that Yammy was" sounds like the foundation behind all of this.
To which end, sure? Szayel was impressive because he broke the 'Shounen Rules' that Bleach otherwise rigidly abided by: not powerful from sheer brute force, but powerful because he refused to slam his head straight on into his foes like everybody else did, and instead apply strategy and elaborate technique. Adding 'terrifying, overwhelming power' to that is a viable approach.
Spirits are forever with you would make such a great anime movie. Also his child form would make a good next gen character with Kazui and Ichika
His design looks a lot better than his clone’s. It’s giving transcendent Aizen vibes with those eyes on his wings. I would have preferred this so much more than yammy being the supposed strongest espada. The backstory is so much more interesting. Curious if kubo would implement this in the hell arc

Probably could be where Aizen got the idea subconsciously and the Hyogyoku manifested that as his Final Form. Since he knew of Szayel at his maximum of power as Cien Granz!

When we consider how much importance Kubo put on Zayel when Pernida and Mayuri were in combat, it is no surprise that he is a character of significance. His release and abilities would seem really op'ed if he weren't going up against one of the most brilliant scientific minds of Soul Society. I certainly wish to see him developed further if Kubo chooses to continue the hell arc.
Great video, per usual. Yeah, I’m a bit neutral with regards to the light novels (specifically CFYOW & SAFWY) because so much tenses the line of established beliefs and power scaling in Bleach. Still, I’m glad to get Bleach content and have that world expanded. Just hope it doesn’t break it.

I just found this video, and I’m glad to not be the only one that finds the concept of Cien Granz interesting. I kinda want to see what becomes of him in Hell arc, how he turns out after being reborn as his own person free from the influence of Szayel and Yylfordt’s identities.
Fun fact, Kubo confirmed not long ago in his Q&A that the Granz brothers are twins (because of their shared birthday), so it really adds to the idea that Cien is made of two halves of a whole that the brothers were.

His pride is his downfall. His arrogance. He believes himself to be the smartest guy in the room. Mayuri proved that Granz can be defeated very easily the moment that you exploit that weakness.
Not sure I would call using ultra slow mo poison “exploiting his weakness.” Pretty sure that would clap just about anyone.

His madness was his downfall. Had he fought seriously, he never would have needed to use his rez. Had he been patient, his rez ink would have killed Uryu and Renji. Had he used ceros, in base or rez, the list goes on.
The man lost because he was impatient and unhinged and it led to him exposing all his cards for Mayuri to exploit. Not to mention the fact that Nemu just so happened to have a drug in her stomach that could defeat Szayel before he could realize.
@@Suzume175 Let's not forget that mayuri is literally kubos favorite character. So anytime mayuri acts it's literally author intervention. If he had gone against anyone else from soul society he would've lost. Except for kenpachi because Aizen has said that higher spiritual pressure can Negate power hax.
Szyal I feel doesn't get enough respect I had a video on my TH-cam channel where I explained why he is stronger than people think in the hopes that it would get him some more respect.
I like Szyal he is actually one of my favorite espada set alarm for is very likely the most powerful member of the group.
I like the idea of Syzelapporo being the previous 0 espada. With that knowledge in hindsight it explains why he was so overconfident against all his opponents. He sees himself as perfect. So who could ever defeat him, even at half strength or lower.

Love your content! Great synopsis of his backstory. I’m curious, do the light novels talk about Nelliels backstory? Would love to hear about her pre Espada and even her time as an espada. I know that in the first light novel she was talked about briefly but it was what she was doing post tybw

I often would overlook his charcater in terms of other stronger and popular Arrancars (like Starrk, Grimmjow, Ulquiorra). I really love Narita's stories. I just love expanding the lore of Bleach!
I don't think it's unreasonable to have granz as the zero. It was very clear that yammy was insufficient for the role, rather than being powerful enough for the position in itself I've always considered him a "unique tool" of aizens designed for a specific job and given the zero because he had the raw reiatsu for it and because that job was important enough to warrant a bit of prestige.

kinda the opposite of Starrk, who as a vasto lorde split his soul and so the two of them became arrancars

2 things I’m noticing
1-what would that hollow look like the formation of so many souls into one creature had to have been at least an evolved hollow like a branch evolution that only appears when all the souls eaten by said hollow have the same goal none are in control but can become a sort of representation of those Greek myths of personified vengeance
2- so if pink hair can’t remember his time as Cien could we say that pink hair is in fact the true form of pink and the yellow one is the true form of yellow but cien is the fusion of pink yellow and the hollow in essence being the tortured souls experiencing Stockholm syndrome and believing themselves to being their abuser as a way to cope out of their victim role

Idea for more bleach videos. Once per week or month. Three Random generated 1v1’s. With your TH-cam video having on screen pictures, and break down of abilities of each pair that are fighting. And you have a poll of sorts, witch us, all of your subscribers can vote for who we think would in. Then a week/month later a follow up video showing the voted winners of that match up. And trying to explain why the winner won. Example of random generated fights. Soi Fon vs Shinji. Ulquiorra vs Byakuya. Gin vs Mr Tsukishima. I think no weak characters should be in the random generator. So it’s interesting and hopefully close fights.

You think Arturo or the Kudo Twins could low-diff Cien Granz? I personally think they could and maybe their captain that was some weird stand-in for Shinji at the time the game was made.

Unpopular opinion. But I don’t like this backstory. Like you said it’s doing a lot heavy lifting. It’s so weird how the splitting made them really weak. We’ve seen characters split in the past, but they still stayed pretty powerful. Illfort ended up as a just a fraccion and Syazell only 8. I think it would have made more sense of the brothers were both high ranking espada. To me this seems like Kubo giving a favorite character a massive boost since it’s not in the mainline story.
I know this is late, but you Szayel was demoted and kicked out of the Espada. But I thought he was Espada #8? Was the manga different? I don’t remember Nnoitora saying he wasn’t an Espada anymore. And who’s the hell arc Cien? Is it even Cien or Szayel? Someone please explain this to me
