Great video!!! I have an entire channel dedicated to Waterworld, and I actually did a video on the backstory of the Mariner which is expanded on in the novelization of Waterworld.

I was always a fan of Waterworld so it's cool to see that it's found some redemption. When I went to download it I ended up getting the Ulysses Cut without even realizing it. I can't believe the way they butchered this film. My favorite additions are the added back story between the Mariner, Helen and Enola. Little things like; The fact he shoved Enola after she gave him a kiss. Then not long after that she's right back in his face with, "I'm not afraid of you". It was always a cool moment but the way he treated her before gives it so much more weight.
The Mariner's backstory was filled out with the novelization and the comic book. So, spoilers:
When the Earth was on the brink of the great deluge a bunch of scientists calling themselves 'The Foundation' started experimenting to create a genetically enhanced human that would be able to survive in Waterworld. The Mariner comes from a line of those creatures although he's more human than what The Foundation originally intended to create. He also has some kind of genetic memory according to the official comic books. The Mariner himself is a child of a 100% man and mutant woman. The man kept both woman and kid Mariner as slaves until he killed Mariner's mother and Mariner killed his own father, took his trimaran.
Oooh dammmnnnn. How bad do I want the prequel now!?!! Muchly

The character arc sounds a lot like Mad Max's from The Road Warrior...coincidence?
No coincidnece at all, they were out to make their own version of Mad Max
I think an essay on 'Cherry 2000' would be pretty entertaining.
It was kind of goofy but it's worth another look.... (That Mustang🐎 was the star of the show though!)

The film fest works off submissions from the filmmakers themselves. But actually, the Nuke Review Theater ,ight be interested. :)

Havent seen the cut, but I still think his character arc needed some fine tuning. What about her drawings made him realize Enola was his one friend? I love the move and think it could be perfect with this one thing.

I love this movie, the part I don't get is how the girl drawing a tree proves to the Mariner that she must have been to Dryland... There is a full sized tree growing on the floating water city where she was living, that you can see in this video at 7:04 teehehe

This movie gets too much flak. Too many people want to talk about the making of the movie instead of the movie itself. It's a shame. Even the first few minutes of this video rehashed the same bullshit. There's so much to this film. The theatrical release is probably the better version, less is better, but the Ulysses cut gives you more of the world and more Jack Black.
