    I always wondered how widely known mutants were in Waterworld. The drifter who steals the Mariner’s fruit at the start of the movie seems to know or suspect he is one.

    • @TheAtoll
      @TheAtoll  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      That is a great point JR! It's really hard to say how much the average person in Waterworld knows about Mutants, but they for sure know they exist. But if that is true, then isn't strange that the Mariner seems to have never met another mutant himself?

    • @jr5925
      @jr5925 2 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      @@TheAtoll My best guess is that any mutants would be killed the moment they were born, so people would know about them but have a very slim chance of actually meeting one.
      Of course, not letting mutations pass on adds another level of absurdity to any human evolving gills 😂

    22:55 shows northern Africa and the Arabian Peninsula, but rising sea levels would not leave those parts showing while leaving the Red Sea virtually the same shape. They just took the outline of the landmasses and painted over randomly.

    It's a shame they never did a comic a-daptation of "Waterworld" itself. I won-der how the characters of Helen, Enola, Gregor, The Deacon & The Nord would look, considering that the Mariner was different in the "Children of Leviathan" comics.
    Edit: Nevermind I didn't know 'bout the manga at the end.

    When I was little I came up with my own set of salvaged ships that survived the deluge. I had the Queen Mary 2, random military battleships from other countries, and a few old sailing ships form the 1800's. I even had the worlds largest cargo ship which carried relics of the old world, such as a train and several more working cars. I recognize the Hutt comparison to Leviathan, but if anything, The Children of the Leviathan reminds me more of the Yuuzhan Vong from Star Wars lore, complete with that spiky armor and their apparent propensity towards self-mutilation.
    Also, there is no way that the Foundation is not a reference to the series of the same name by Issac Asimov. They practically serve the same purpose, and appear to be the only faction in Waterworld to maintain some sort of technologically advanced society.

    • @TheAtoll
      @TheAtoll  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes, I totally see the connection you are making with the Yuuzhan Vong! I am not familiar with that Issac Asimov novel, but it sounds cool! I will have to check it out.

    • @assemblyrequired7342
      @assemblyrequired7342 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@TheAtoll Foundation is not just a novel, but a series started by Issac Asimov in 1951.
      A lot of the cultural and technological aspects described in the novels are pretty outdated, but that's to be expected, considering how differently technology and has society diverged from expectations 70 years ago, and that's why the television series mad many changes and additions from the novels.
      Even so, Issac Asimov's series can be considered as one of the first attempts in the classic space opera genre with an overarching storyline, and one of the inspirations behind Star Wars.
      I love the idea of a similar society to the Foundation in the Water World continuity. I like the idea that with ancient advanced knowledge, there is the possibility that maybe the remnants of humanity could be given a chance to learn from the mistakes of their ancestors, and learn how to thrive again in a hostile environment.
      If anything, I don't think that the comics went far enough concerning advanced technology, as humanity would surely invent more than just compact submersibles up until the time of the Deluge. From watching one or more of your other videos, humanity survived up until the early 23rd century. Even if they didn't develop the technology to successfully deflect comets, there's no telling what they DID invent.
      Let's just say that on a Pelagic world, it might be easier to gather the fuel for engines that run on hydrogen, than to power internal combustion engines, especially when the oil fields are completely submerged.

    • @TheAtoll
      @TheAtoll  3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      yeah, I think this is a common with most of the comics that extend a franchise's story. in the end, a comic run has a lot lower risk than a full fledged sequel and a lot less creative energy put behind it. Also, the people behind the Waterworld comic series seem actively against it. if you read the "notes to dryland" published with each issue, they openly bash their own creation.

    I really dont know why this got shit on so hard when it came out. Like Waterworld was a joke to anlot of people and I'm just like why, this is such a good movie. There could easily be a ton more lore amd stories. I feel like maybe the underlying message of environmental catastrophe made people bounce off it, since we know there's a ton of deniers for that.

      Yeah I'm not sure why either. It's possibly because of it's environmental undertones, but also I think at the time, it just become a punch line for entertainment magazine and late night TV, which had much more influence in the 90s. Then I guess the whole public just went with that narrative.
