  • Hi all I hope you enjoyed today's video! Question: should I use the camera for all videos or just the unboxings? I think my phone camera is better for chatty videos but for unboxings the camera is better!
Tomorrow will be another episode of Saturdays With Dad and it'll be about the 2000s!
    See you then!

Gentle Giant has been my favorite band for the last 45 years. ALWAYS discovering new detail within the music! If I could only have ONE of their albums, it would be the Official Live album, Playing The Fool. Not only does the material cover several of their albums, but the recording is just so good! The arrangements are unique and the amazing number of instruments used by every member in the band on stage is stunning! One of the best live albums of all time!

Hey Niamh, I never read the comments on this particular video, as I was having some technical issues with TH-cam at the time... but after what you said about the negative comments, I had to find out what you were talking about.
It's a shame that these few comments had upset you, because I think that the 'positive' was very much outweighing the 'negative' with the majority of these.
If you really put things in perspective, I don't think even these negative comments were aimed to upset you.
It's just that a few people were pretty envious that you could indulge in your passion, in the way that you do.
I'm sure that they didn't have anything personal against you... but if they did, then they're definitely the ones with a problem, as you're a good person, and deserve some common decency, and respect.
I'm personally very happy that you have the means to follow your passions, it's a pretty cool thing!.

I have this box and I love it! So nice to have the touring history accompanying the bootleg live recordings, it shines a light on the live story of the band. Any Giant fan knows how their sweaty, heavy live shows differed quite radically form their sometimes antiseptic studio recordings. Not to mention the often total rearrangements of their material for concert use. Also nice to have in one place all the live documents from the early years of the band when Phil Shulman was still in the group. As massive as this box is, there is still stuff missing....like their BBC sessions for instance. Or the studios leftovers and demos as found in the Under Construction box. Still, worth every penny as one-stop shopping for any Gentle Giant fan.

I was in the audience at the Roxy show in 1980. That was their last US performance. It was a great show. Didn't know it was being recorded for a release, 40 years later. Funny, I tried to sneak in a cassette recorder to record a personal copy of that show but was caught and sent back to my car. They were going through everybody's stuff that night to make sure that there were no recorders going into that show.

That is a pretty extensive box set, lot of material to ;listen to, Someone gave me a collection of Grateful Dead live audience recordings, over a hundred different concerts and I listened to none of them in the 5 years I've had them, there's just not enough time to listen to what I own in my collection, If I started at the beginning I wouldn't be able to listen to all of it before I die. Wow, Gentle Giant beings back memories. I grew up in Ayrshire, Scotland. When I was about 14 or 15 I got to go up to Glasgow with my cousins to see Gentle Giant (circa '72-'73). Very nice. Which actually reminds me that I've been meaning to ask if you or Dad happened to be familiar with a band that was called The Nice? It was Keith Emerson before Emerson, Lake & Palmer. As you both really love the early ELP, The Nice would be very much along those same lines. "The Five Bridges Suite" was written by Keith Emerson and was inspired by the city of Newcastle.

@@MrTarkus01 Missing Piece has a few good tracks. GFAD and Civilian are terrible GG albums, but taken on their own merits as very slick pop/rock albums, they're kinda good fun with a few decent tunes here and there.
As someone who only got into GG fairly recently, despite being aware of them since the mid 70s, I genuinely can't get over how good the classic GG albums are. They've barely dated at all, and there are even things on the albums that sound like math rock and post rock, long before those genres existed.

I often wish that the material included in these box sets had been made available before I started collecting the albums or that they did a separate set that doesnt include the officially released albums - simply because I am hesitant to shell out the cash required to purchase a load of discs that I've already got. The albums in the set are great - my introduction to them however wasnt until the Edge of Twilight compilation that came out in 1996 which I'll admit took me a while to get into, however after perservering I finally got it and promptly went out to get everything they'd done as well including the live DVDs. So If the live cds were available seperately - presumably they are of varied quality as I'd guess they are either radio broadcasts or audience tapes? - I'd most probably buy them - same thing with the ELP Fanfare set, The Wishbone Ash Vintage Years set (which really pains me as it has the first gig I saw Wishbone Ash it at Bournemouth WInter Gardens in 1978 that in reviews is said to be an excellent show). Very very nice box set though.

I really considered buying this as a die-hard GG fan. But I'm not a big fan of live recordings, particularly unofficial ones, and since I have all the GG albums and some live stuff, the price for this was just too much ... considering, as far as I heard, the audio quality seems not to be that great on the exclusive live material. I would really recommend their live album "Playing the Fool" though. Some of the songs were rearranged for the live performances and are really worth listening to also in those versions.

At 3:10 you can see the on the poster the introduction of "Gentle Giant" with "ace singer Simon Dupree." Simon Dupree and The Big Sound were a relatively famous band, with a hit radio single called "Kites." GG lead Singer Derek Shulnan was "Simon," and his brothers were also in the band. Throwing that away for Gentle Giant was adventurous.

At that age you never realize until many years later. Then you either regret or have moved on.

Seems to be a kind of Holy Grail for any Gentle Giant fan. Unfortunately, the box set is a huge disappointment : the album new remasters done for this boxset are not as good as the previous reissues (2010/2011 remasters are amazing) and the live cd's are kind of "official bootlegs" with poor sound quality for most of them. Of course, I'm only talking about the sound quality (and this is just my own humble opinion) .. Gentle Giant's music is fantastic and they are probably the most underrated prog band from the 70's.
