Still one of the single greatest films I've ever seen. So powerful. I wish it was more widely known here in the US. My grandfather was Serbian and first hand I saw the old tribalist tyle prejudices and hatreds that he held for no good reason. This movie has meant a lot to me over the years.
Katrin Cartlidge was SO underrated. She did nothing but excelent work and was never even nominated for a BAFTA Award. Naked, Breaking the Waves, No Man's Land, Before the Rain are masterpieces.
I was too young to watch this movie in the 90s. I was told that is too heavy / complicated. I am not person who watches Macedonian / Balkan movies as they usually tend to be hard to digest. Now I am 33, and I have just discovered this gem, something made me watch it. I can fully agree with the masterpiece comments, and is not something to state lightly. The visual and the music are astonishing, and the movie is just full with these brilliant art moments. In some sense, reminds me of the 3 colours movie. I like when an idea, a motive is reappearing, and like cyclic shaped stories. Absolutely masterpiece! Hats down to everyone involved. PS: Rade Sherbedjija is one of my favourite characters from the Balkans. Never really considered him to be a seriously great actor, but what a breathtaking performance!!!!
