Did you know.. your Kevin is a Yale graduate and had just finished his pre-med requirements when he joined PTX, he was a principal cellist with the Yale Symphony Orchestra (he developed what is now known as "celloboxing"), has performed at Carnegie, speaks Mandarin and Spanish, ..there are SO many achievements and accolades there is neither space or time to name them here.. amazing guy!
Kevin, while most marvel at his beatboxing, is perhaps the most talented of the group. He is a multi-instrumentalist, beatboxer, and impeccable tenor vocalist with perfect pitch. A true musical savant. To more fully appreciate his ability you really need to see his solo "KOvers". 'Down', 'Sign of the Times', and 'Stay with Me' are a pretty good sampling.
The symbology of the cave is the empty tomb of Christ. Many friends who have traveled to Israel have commented that the cave they are in looks like the caves used for burials. Thank you for bravely reacting to this song and their arrangement of it.
You would love their rendition of Little Drummer Boy, Kevin sings a little on that one too, but his beatboxing is amazing! I can't wait to see you react to Kevin's solo stuff on his channel, it will blow you away. His talent is on another level!
Avi taught Kevin how to sing. Avi has a school to teach singing. They needed another bass to help fill in when Avi was singing. Kevin and Scott was filler. He turned out to be an excellent singer.
Kevin, hey! Just when you think you’ve got him figured out, he surprises you. There is so much more to come. Great reaction and looking forward to the next one.
This song and Hallelujah are how I found Pentatonix. I was looking for Christmas music videos on TH-cam to play around the Christmas holidays. I was hooked when I heard and saw them and now I'm a Pentaholic, as well as an Avi-aholic. lol Thanks for the reaction.
The Mary in the song is the mother of Jesus, so the song is asking if the young mother knows what her newborn son will go on to do. (There’s a biblical answer to that, but I’m not going to turn this into a religious class.) So that’s why it’s a religious song, and sung mostly at Christmas. The cave is reflective of the poor conditions Jesus was born in (as well as being great for acoustics). If you go back and look at the visuals, when Kirstin sings, she’s framed by the cave door and is illuminated, somewhat reflective of traditional depictions of Mary, the mother of God.
Thank you for your reaction. Because you have commented by addressing the question of meaning of the cave and the candles/light, I would imagine that there are many people who do not understand the significance of these as Biblical symbols in relation to Christmas which is when Christians celebrate the birth of Christ, the son of God, in human form, as the Light which has come into the world (the cave) and freed it from its darkness and propensity to evil. This song is a splendid and beautiful recognition of Mary, the Jewish woman who gave birth to the Son of God, Jesus, in a cave that many Bibles have translated by the word “stable” which most of us (of a certain age) in Western countries are accustomed to seeing on Christmas cards before they became obsolete. This is one of my favourite songs by Pentatonix and I think, by any group who sings a-Capello so magnificently! What a wonderful gifted group of singers they are!
What a group!,...All can sing so well. Scott's the voice, Mitch is angelic clarity, Kirstie laser clear and power, Avi bass, bass, bass then he can sing, and Kevin..one of the most talented individuals I've heard. Cello, beatbox, vocally..wow
Kevin Is a very talented guy. All of them are, and so versatile. And Ben Bram Is a genious too...If you react to PTX, a lot of pentaholics will be here...
The man who wrote the lyrics to this song is Mark Lowery. As a boy his parents were told that he would amount to nothing because he suffered from serious reading and learning difficulties. Up until recently he sang regularly with the Gaither band which by the way is actually an excellent group to listen to but their music is usually religious. Mark Lowery not only can sing he is an excellent comedian. I ofter see someone else get credit for writing the lyrics to Mary Did You Know, so I thought I would let you know who wrote the words. He pretends that he is a journalist interviewing Mary after Jesus is an adult.
The visuals - I read a comment somewhere else that when they did Kirstie's solo shots, she is framed against the light of the cave opening so there's like a halo around her, a nod to Mother Mary
This truly is sensory overload to me, I love, love, love this song.. If you don't mind Christmas music in summer, their rendition of Silent Night is breathtaking
I absolutely love your reactions.. and the accent is frosting on the 🍰!! 😁 Just a tid bit of background: Kevin is very religious! So religious that when they were on the competition show "The Sing Off" they had to change a song/lyrics to make them not as "offensive"... I'm not super religious but it was great to see them, as a group, respect him and his beliefs and work together to make the performance great for all! If you haven't already, you might like going back in time to see where it started... their backstory ect. (* Keep in mind they were 19yrs old, and as good as they were... they have come a long way!) Have a wonderful week and stay safe and healthy! 🤗🌺
I knew you would love this! "Little drummer boy" and "winter hymnal" are both great ones to continue a Christmas in July theme. I dont think anyone will mind.
Pleaseee react to Silent Night.. it's all just singing without any beat boxing and its absolutely stunning just hearing just their voices in harmony ❤ (another great one is their original Run to You.. preferably live off mic, shows their amazing talent and the song is beautiful) ❤
Great reaction! That’s what good music does... move you to join in! Which you did!! While most agree Jesus was born in a stable, some historians say it was in a barn others say it was in a cave so yes, there was meaning to the location they picked. The crystal clarity of their voices in this one...just magical! I agree with Sing (an original), Can’t Hold Us and Rather Be as suggestions!
Great reaction! Knowing how much you love Kevin, you should check out his solo channel. A couple of his covers are Down by Marian Hill and Sign of the Times by Harry Styles. Would recommend all of Kevin’s solo music, but start with those two 😉. Especially Down. That one’s my favourite!
Their singing in a cave was symbolic. Jesus was born in a cave because all the ends in the area was filled. The end keeper was that Mary was pregnant a ready to deliver her child so he told Joseph about this location. 🌹
since you love Kevin Olusola (KO) so much, you DEFINITELY need to check out his solo work! I would recommend starting with his cover of Harry Styles, Sign of the Times even though more Pentaholics recommend his cover of Marion Hill's Down, either one will blow you away! MUST SEE
I always enjoy your reactions, but your expression when Keven began singing made me laugh. He has a beautiful voice. If you enjoy beat boxing you need to listen to Adam Rupp from the group Home Free. In their just realised song " God Bless the USA" he does a jet flyover at the end. I would love to hear him and Kevin in a song together.
Awesome, Stellar, Epic, Outstanding...for a few.....Just saying! LOL They are asking Mary if she realized Her Son was going to be the healer, the miracle worker, the Savior of the world. They are in a cave, as it was considered back then a manger for animals, bc there was no room at the inn.
Now if you love beat boxing you gotta check out Home Free CountryFried POP. Adam, The beatboxer has won the World Beatboxing Championship two years ina row. He’s just the best. Home Free won The Sing Off The year after Pentatonics won.
If you like beatboxing, you have to listen to Home Free and their Beat Boxer. He does a variety of instruments including a Jew’s harp and a harmonica. Home Free is a cappella group that is country oriented and does covers. Start out with a Ring of Fire featuring as a guest, Avi from Pentatonix, then move on to a Man of Constant Sorrow, and then to the End of the Road, and then to Two Country Guys try Opera with Nessum Dorma
How come no one is recommending New Rules x Are You That Somebody?.. especially since he loves Kevin's beatboxing and Mitch has the mustache... it's perfect. That one and Shallow... I love love love but no one has mentioned them. Please react to them.
You have to listen to Home Free featuring Avi Kaplan with their cover of "Ring of Fire." Adam Rupp is their beatboxer and her is award winning. Please check them out!!!
You should check Kevin’s YT channel. He’s such a talented guy ❤️. And for the bass, Avi, check him too, he’s having his own songs. (On hiatus with PTX)
Beatboxer? Check out Home Free as well. Adam Rupp is amazing. There's "drum solo" on You Tube showcasing his talent and of course, he's amazing in all their videos.
This reaction went through the wringer... I made a comment, and when I went to add another comment, it was marked private. Then I watched it again, and suddenly it was removed as a copyright violation. Now it appears to be up and stable 😀 What happened with the background music from the intro lingering through the Scott and Avi section in the beginning? Was that an oopsie, or an intentional thing?
Ok you have to see Kevin on his own th-cam.com/video/IGjg193h4Ok/w-d-xo.html But be prepared to have your mind blown . A little more information about him he was an ivy league Road scholar he speaks five different languages including Mandarin which is the hardest language to learn . And he was studying to be a doctor . He's also one of the funniest nicest guys
You must listen to "Drum Solo" by Adam Rupp, the " Freak of Nature ," of Home Free @ the University of MN Morris 10-9-15 They are an A capella group, but this is just the beat boxer. You'll be impressed, I promise!
WOW is right! This is so powerful and beautiful.
And that what we pentaholix call Mitch effect!!! Cheers!

Kevin is awesome this is my favorite Christmas song
Nice to hear a review without constant curse words! This song dear to my heart!!! Good job darlin’!!!
The symbology of the cave is the empty tomb of Christ. Many friends who have traveled to Israel have commented that the cave they are in looks like the caves used for burials. Thank you for bravely reacting to this song and their arrangement of it.
Thank you Brian. I approach music in a unbiased manner. Respect the art form...

Always enjoy them. Silent Night is another one that is a favorite of mine.
Yes, Silent Night in a stairwell!
You would love their rendition of Little Drummer Boy, Kevin sings a little on that one too, but his beatboxing is amazing! I can't wait to see you react to Kevin's solo stuff on his channel, it will blow you away. His talent is on another level!
Little Drummer Boy was the first song I ever heard by them and it pushed me straight into the Rabbit Hole, and I would take that step again everytime!
This is the most gorgeous version of this song I have ever heard. A stunning, intricately woven tapestry.
Also you HAVE to do some of Kevin’s solo stuff! Watch his version of Down!
YES!!!!! it's excellent. A must listen!!
Run to you will make your heart stop because of the harmonies.
Avi taught Kevin how to sing. Avi has a school to teach singing. They needed another bass to help fill in when Avi was singing. Kevin and Scott was filler. He turned out to be an excellent singer.
Thanks for sharing this.
If you haven't already, please watch Amazing Grace. You will be surprised at the end!

Also, the "stable" Jesus was born in, at the time was probably a cave in a hillside. So a cave makes sense as a setting for the video.
Gospel song lyrics written by Mark Lowry of the gospel group The Gaithers. The music was written by Buddy Greene a musician with the Gaithers.
Jesus' tomb was a cave.
More than a Christmas song A song for everyday. Pulls my heart strings every time I hear it. Thank you for sharing.
Not a problem. Glad you enjoyed.

I love that Kevin, a fellow Seventh-Day Adventist, had his own solo in this. I'm sure that bit meant alot to him.

Jesus is the light in the darkness, I guess the candle is representing that. This song just gives me chills.
I'm fairly certain that the very first vocal you hear, as the video first starts, is Kevin.

nice beatbox. I have difficulty picking it up, because it's not my thing. So I appreciate perspectives that focus on Kevin's beatbox. :)
Thanks Renee... have you ever tried it? I use to be able to do it good hehe. But alas life and its responsibilities take over. 🙂
