Searching for Disney's Dragons

  • Dragons are arguably the most well-known mythical creature in the west. If you've seen my video The History of Disney and Dinosaurs, you can think of this video almost as a companion piece because it's going to relate quite a bit back to the other one, so I do suggest watching that first if you haven't. The idea for this video isn't mine, but instead came from another TH-cam user who suggested that I do the history of Disney and Dragons and coincide the release with the Chinese New Year for 2021. It's not something I thought there would be enough content for at first, but as I've done a bit of research, I think there's some interesting things to talk about. I've come to the conclusion that Disney and its history with dragons is actually one of disappointment and quite a bit of lost entertainment potential. As for the person who suggested the idea for dragons, unfortunately, it seems that they deleted their comment for whatever reason, and I can't credit you because I don't have your username. That being said though, thank you for the suggestion, and I hope everyone enjoys the video. This wouldn't have happened without you.
    This video is a companion piece to my other video "The History of Disney and Dinosaurs": • The History of Disney ...
    As mentioned, I do strongly recommend checking out MartinVidsDotNet for more context on the attractions at the Imagination Pavilion at Epcot.

    Probably could've waited until after the release of Raya and the Last Dragon because that is the second film where Disney depicted Chinese, or rather, Eastern dragons, much more accurately than Mushu may I add. There's also the film Onward from Pixar as well, but that's barely worth mentioning for obvious reasons. Also, I'm suprised you didn't even bring up American Dragon: Jack Long.

    I want some Chinese Dragons appearing in the China Pavillion of Epcot’s World Showcase and the Asia section of Disney’s Animal Kingdom in a Far-Eastern sub-area with Chinese Dragons! 🐉

    • @PoseidonEntertainment
      @PoseidonEntertainment  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I agree with World Showcase, but I'm a bit iffy on Animal Kingdom. As much as I want to see a dragon themed attraction there, the Asia section of the park already blends Indian and Nepalese culture together. While there are certainly Indian depictions of east Asian dragons, it might get a little culturally crowded over there. I did a video on Joe Rohde and Animal Kingdom recently where I talk a bit about how these are blended: th-cam.com/video/bjfmDRveUa8/w-d-xo.html

    I feel bad that you didn't get a lot out of The Reluctant Dragon. The story behind the film is fascinating. The Disney animators were on the infamous strike that split the studio culture. This movie still had to be made to look like everyone was a big happy family. We get some really neat looks at Disney legends before they became famous in their own right including Clarance Nash doing his Donald voice. We see new animation of Bambi and Casey Jr before audiences were familiar with those characters. The biggest effect this film had was the Baby Weems segment. Disney was THE FIRST studio to use storyboards, something used in every movie in Hollywood today. Audiences at the time were foreign to the concept. Having a partially animation storyboard piece was quite a novelty and something we haven't seen from Disney since. The actual short, The Reluctant Dragon, is well done, and true to book that inspired it, but it's actually the least interesting aspect of the movie. The good stuff comes from the studio tour and Benchley's interactions with Walt.

    I love your channel man! So unique and professional with different interesting topics! I’ve got the art of Disney Dragons book which is a fantastic art book, featuring concept art solely about Disney Dragons. It includes all sorts of cancelled concepts like the Jabbawocky from Alice in Wonderland and even things you’d not think about like Genie when he turns into a dragon and some of the murals featured around the parks. Think it was made to coincide with the live action Pete’s Dragon (which is a movie I’d give a chance, while I’ve not watched it since, I remember really enjoying it and this is coming from someone that hates the majority of their recent live action remakes) as there is some pages featuring that movie and other live action dragons like the one in Enchanted. Anyway, keep up the good work, I’d love to see something like the history of Disney and robots, a lot of look at there, maybe even too much!🤣

      I'll definitely have to check that out, I'm interested in collecting Disney books that showcase art. Same with the remake of Pete's Dragon. I couldn't stand the initial one, but I'll give the new one a fair chance.
      To be honest, I'm not a fan of this video because I feel it doesn't have much of a cohesive concept, but I thought I would tackle the subject anyways because of the initial suggestion. As for robots though, I think that's an idea that could make for a much more interesting video. I can think of quite a bit to talk about there, especially with early Epcot. I'll definitely keep your idea in mind ( and please leave your comment up so I can credit you when the time comes lol). That being said, I'm going to be extremely busy over the next few weeks and that's a more ambitious project, so the videos for the next few weeks should be a bit lighter on content. I definitely really like your idea though, so thanks for the suggestion!

    Great Video man. I know this is a comment on a 3-year-old video, but I'm new to the channel, so I wanted to give my thoughts.
    As a fan of animatronics and robotics, especially of giant creatures, the losing of Dragon Tower and Beastly kingdom really hurts me. The idea of a gigantic animatronic dragon attacking guests is something I still want to see today, especially at Animal Kingdom since a) I love that park and b) it would give all the dragon imagery in the park actual meaning. I've had my own ideas on how to incorporate it into the park, the obvious being, as you mentioned, building the Dragon Tower Roller Coaster, but I also had some other ideas as well.
    - The more conventional of the 2 is a Beastly Kingdom themed Dark Ride. Since Pandora has basically made it so that it’s impossible to ever see the full land built, having many of the ideas presented in the pitch incorporated into a single Dark Ride I think would be a fine compromise. Have the guests interact with animatronic figures of various mythological creatures such as Unicorns, Centaurs, and the finale being an encounter with a large Dragon animatronic. If they want something more thrilling, maybe a slot car attraction similar to Test Track, Journey to the Center of the Earth or Radiator Springs Racers, starting with slower dark ride scenes and ending in a high-speed escape from the Dragon.
    - The more out there idea is this.......Put a Dragon themed thrill attraction such as a roller coaster in Dinoland USA (which I know is on the chopping block but this is for the sake of an example). I know this is a massive stretch but hear me out.
    In your Disney’s History with Dinosaurs video and in this one, you mentioned how the discovery of Dinosaur Bones before modern science was a theory into how the myths of Dragons came to be. Why not play with that? Have an attraction where guests learn about how Mythology and Paleontology are related through a side show attraction presented by Chester and Hester and several Dino Institute employees. Things go south however when several of the Dinoland institute employees begin theorizing what a real dragon could actually be like, and use the scientific equipment and bones they have to reconstruct what a biologically accurate dragon could look like….only for them to accidentally create a real dragon. It goes on a rampage and they enlist the help of the guests to track down and capture the angry creature before it causes more mayhem. I know this is more sci-fi than Mythological, might not fit with Dinoland at all, and would be scarily close to Jurassic Park, but at the very least it’s a fun idea to think about.
    In the end though, I just want to have a truly great giant animatronic classical Dragon in Animal Kingdom, and there is so much potential there that Disney will never go into. Hell, even just a walk through attraction similar to Disneyland Paris would make me happy, even if it might be underwhelming.
