Just a correction that I only just discovered in producing a new video: The Universe of Energy actually closed in 1996 and reopened the same year as Ellen's Energy Adventure, whereas in the video I stated it opened in 1994 just a year after the release of Jurassic Park. I'm unsure of where I got the original date, but the timing changes a lot of context around the new retheme of the ride and the premier of Countdown to Extinction only two years later, chasing the success of Jurassic Park's film franchise. It appears that the film didn't seem to have much of an influence on updating the Universe of Energy, still opting to keep the more antiquated perception of dinosaurs intact. Also, a few other corrections made by people in the comments: "the pterosaurs on Dinosaur, are in fact Pterodactyls. the one you showed on the ellen ride, was a Pteranodon. it's a common mistake people make." - ImTheRealJake "Ornithocheirus, pteranodon, and all pterosaurs are not dinosaurs. As a paleontological novice and dinosaur fan, I love Disney's dinosaurs. I love their details and forward thinking portrayals. I also love that Walt was told the Rex has two fingers, but said his Rex had three

25:13-25:28 You’re exactly correct. Disney chose Carnotaurus for their Dinosaur film and Dinosaur The Ride. In the Dinosaur 2000 DVD bonus features, someone said they needed a break from the T-Rex and wanted something new. Also pre-2000 Carnotaurus wasn’t well know.
Thank you for giving Dinoland it’s due!! I always loved it... and when I’m at Disney by myself, it’s one if the lands I spend the most time in. And DINOSAUR, when it works and all animatronics are functioning, is one of my favorite rides of all time.
I'm not gonna lie, I do like when some of the animatronics aren't functioning. There's a number of "B mode" carnotaurus' that can be seen throughout when this happens and it's a rare look into how they designed the attraction to still keep functioning even when the animatronics don't.
4:00 my paleontology professor said this particular fossil was called “scrotum humanum” for its appearance. But as you mention, it’s actually part of a dinosaur femur.
I remember as a kid (moving from Arizona to Florida) and being disappointed that Disney world’s railroad didn’t have the dinosaurs scene the most (along with no Matterhorn, Toon Town, or Indiana Jones Adventure) That being said Ive always loved the dinosaur the animal kingdom attraction for having both dinosaurs and the Indiana Jones ride vehicles and I’ve been trying to tell people for years all the points you’ve made about dinoland USA - glad I’m not the only one who recognizes its intricate theming
I agree, Magic Kingdom is missing so many great attractions from Disneyland. That being said, I do think Magic Kingdom has its own unique quirks that Disneyland doesn't, so it's an acceptable trade-off.
While it's true that the dinos in the Rite of Spring were based a lot on Charles R Knight's work along with Willis O' Brien's stop motion animation, but they were actually a few things that do make some of the short ahead of it's time. 6:58- 8:15 While yes the T-Rex has been shown standing erect, you don't really see him drag his tail like in Ghost of Slumber Mountain, The Lost World, and King Kong. Most of the time it has his tail somewhat above the ground, and semi horizontal. While the T-Rex did had the tail on the ground during the finale of the fight(When he breaks the Stego's neck), but it's mostly when he's standing still in place, and was kind of using it as like a counter weight to balance when tipping over the Stegosaurus. The Ceratosaurus were even shown with horizontal tails, during the extinction scene. Plus the herbivores did behave more like animals, in fact they shown them living in herds and even them taking care of their young. Which back then was thought to be incorrect, but is correct now.
I had noticed some of those things, but I had assumed it was a matter of artistic liberty being taken. Do you know if this was done with the intention of portraying them in a new scientific light?
I respect Disney for coming up with a unique theme despite the budget and constraints, but if you have to explain to people the theme and why it's actually good actually, then it's not well themed. I always thought Dino Land USA was a cheap work around a la California adventure curtesy of Michael Eisner. Still sad we never got the mythical creatures land.
I believe that the majority of theming is the same as opening day, so it was always there. I think the issue is that people don't simply take the time to look at the details of anything, not just this. How many people have discarded Animal Kingdom as "just a zoo" without taking in the immersive theming? I think taking the lesson of "take a closer look and you'll begin to see the story" is something we should promote in theme park culture. The more people who it explain it to others, the more we'll see it become a norm.
You know, that's a good point. We should all slow down and pay attention to the details and theming more. I would also like to quote Kelly Kapoor: "you don't hear a theme, you see it." But well made video anyway. Really like your channel.
@raegangarlitz5313 but it's poorly portrayed and executed, though. I think a good bit of people DID pay attention, but just didn't like it. The whole thing doesn't seem to do a good job of portraying its themes and at the same time ends up becoming a stereotype in it of itself. It doesn't really balance it with any realism to make the tackyness feel part of something, and goes too far with it too to where it loses its thematic relevance. As you said, it's not well themed, it's basically poorly executed. That is the problem with Dinoland USA. Plus why do theme parks have to have a story any way? Aren't they just suppose to be simple entertainment?

In the case of Disney parks, they are almost the entire experience. Take away the sets and characters of Pirates and what are you left with? Would you pay to ride a slightly wet plastic seat that will go over one drop in the middle of otherwise gentle turns or straightaways moving at 3 mph? Turn off the screen for Star Tours and all you get is an uncomfortably mobile chair. Removing the dome and queue of Space Mountain would take all the meaning and immersion along with it.
@YouMayKnowMeAsNate that's not at all what I was talking about. I was talking about having a big, convoluted story for an entire park instead of just the set, characters, and things that make the experience like screens and domes and such. The problem I have is the unnecessary thing to have an entire story for an entire theme park, even though they are only made for fun rides with a theme, but not a story. Pretty much no one will look hard enough at things to see a story, especially if this story has a consistent beginning, middle, and end. They won't because no one will have the time or go through every ride in order that progresses this story to do so. Not to mention, they are terrible at conveying stories unless you're like Sherlock Holmes. Theme parks can't convey a huge, complex story like movies or shows can and are made to be dumb fun rides in general. You don't need a convoluted story to make a great theme park. Plus, the story in this theme park was terribly executed. Different entertainment has different ways of how it's done. Rides can tell stories, but not entire parks. Even if it could, they are unnecessary and can do or do without them.
Awesome video! I love Dinoland's kitsch, and it's always been a place to get a fun change of pace on a long day at the parks for me. I'm bummed to hear about Primeval Whirl, but excited for whatever replaces it!
It's interesting to see what goes in its place, though there haven't seemed to be any rumors of a new attraction. If I had to guess though? Probably more midway games. I had heard that Primeval Whirl was a maintenance nightmare, so that's likely why it's being scrapped.
ThE DINOSAUR Ride at Animal Kingdom is great. One of my favorites from when I was there in 2015 with my family. You're right that it feels more like a Universal horror ride. My son (9 at the time) got scared lol.

Fun fact about the 2 scientists fighting over who could find the most bones: is also the story Crichton’s last full book “Dragon teeth” is based on and is an amazing book, i personally believe rivals Jurassic Park in thrill.
It is a good book, but far away from JP in thrill. Perhaps closer to Crichtons The lost world. Sphere and Kongo is Crichton books much closer to Jurassic park.
Actually the early stop-motion didn't show the dinosaurs as slow and plodding. Yes, they were incorrectly shown as standing and moving nearly straight up and dragging their tails, but they look pretty quick and fast and agile, especially in The Lost World and in King Kong.

The dinosaur attractions at Disneyland and at animal kingdom are some of my favorite things to see at the resorts. I do miss the universe of energy ride which was my favorite ride at epcot.
I agree with all of your points. If Magic Kingdom is doing an extensive refurb with its railroad while Tron is being constructed, maybe add those dinos from the Universe of Energy?

I can’t express how much I love this video... You did phenomenal with the descriptions and history of the attractions. Personally, I adore “Dinosaur” the ride, especially after always watching the movie on my way to Disney world when I was little. I feel it’s a criminally underrated ride (and movie), and I love how it’s still standing after all these years. This vid just made me more excited to ride it again when I revisit the parks. I was never really a fan of The Excavator, but I do like some of its ideas. I've always thought that a time traveling coaster bringing you through portals back in time from an old dig site and reusing the location would have been interesting.
Love it! I love the 2000 Disney’s Dinosaur movie no matter what anybody says! I practically grew up watching Dinosaur, and it’s where I got my childhood love for dinosaurs. And it’s my all-time favorite Disney film.

Poseidon Entertainment Oh, no need to apologize (😉). To an extent, I agree: "Dinosaur" doesn't get near the amount of attention that some of Disney's other works. I personally feel it should at least get more: the plot is competently written and presented, there's good voice acting, beautiful cinematography & music, and the CGI animation looks and moves believably. But that's just me talking.

As someone who worked at Dino land in the carnival area, one of the reasons I think the kitsch doesn’t work effectively is because the theme of “cheap” should have been only surface level. The actual rides are the ONLY ones in all Disney that were bought offsite and not made in house by imagineers. I think if the rides were actually quality under the guise of cheap, people would have been more on board with the idea. When you pay to get into Disney, you don’t want cheap. But if it’s DESIGNED to LOOK cheap but is ACTUALLY quality, people often understand the concept more (similar to how people like dilapidated places if its underneath quality is top notch like The Tower of Terror). The Dino land rides were janky and uncomfortable and hurt even . Not to mention primeval whirl was stupidly designed to appeal highly to very young kids but had a very restrictive height requirement.
I think it got a pretty decent refurb back in 2016 (or 2017?) adding in the screen based compys. I would like to see the ornithocheirus swoop down on riders again though.
@@PoseidonEntertainment I think I saw in a ride through recently where it shut down and the physical compys are still there, though I don’t know if that’s true anymore or if it would even look good today. The swooping ornithicareius would be awesome as well. Even with a recent refurb, I still feel like some effects don’t work as often as they should, though with large animatronics I guess that’s to be expected.
I'm sorry, but if Dino Land USA's theming is too subtle for audiences to understand, that's the designers' fault, not the audience's. They were creative to be sure, but huge theme park lands need to immediately communicate their major story ideas and provide details second. Visual design is all about communication, and that includes architecture and engineering design. You can make great works of art, but if you don't wear your message on your sleeve then you can't expect average audiences to understand it.
Edit: just saw your corrections comment. Unnecessary correction from me, but might still be informative to someone. Well, the term pterodactyl is actually correct for the ornithocheirus and both uses, as pterodactyl is an all-encompassing word for any pterosaur genus (not just pteranodon; the other “pterodactyl” used). Pterosaurs are also not dinosaurs but are somewhat closely related.
People dis Animal Kingdom's "Dinoland" because "It has to be explained," but the "explanation" is all over the place when you're there! I think the underlying story is so obvious, once you get a hint, that people resent they didn't figure it out on their own and hold it against the land. I am not a rides person and was not aware there was a Dinosaur movie that is in any sense connected to the ride. I guess I'll tell my youngest about it, but it's a pity I missed that fact the first time she went. Great video, as always. Often agree with you, but even when I don't, I find your observations interesting.
I think the design philosophy behind Animal Kingdom is a bit too highbrow for the average person. I love how the lands tell their stories through what you can deduct just from observation and I think was a bit ahead of its time. I don't think that having to explain the story to people is necessarily a bad thing as it can get somewhat complex, but I think the online community has definitely helped elevate how people perceive this land. Hopefully more exposure to the narrative helps to continue changing perception, even with the cheap additions in Dinorama.
I was fortunate to take a VIP walking tour of Universe of Energy's dinosaur section in 2002... while the ride was functioning! We got to see the animatronics up close and touch a few of them, hiding from the ride vehicles when they passed through via strategically placed planters and exit corridors. They are amazingly detailed & textured, holding up even to close scrutiny. I do hope some of the dinos are saved, and possibly relocated to a section of the WDW Railroad (now undergoing refurbishment while they build the TRON lightcycles) as a tribute to the DL railroad's primordial dinosaur section. That'd be fitting.
Lol dinosaur the ride being compared to a horror house on wheels is to on point. I was a lil lil kid almost slipped out the straps at the first carnotaurus meet where it's just the head and arms. Sitting in the front left seat right next to it, vehicles tilts and I go sliding lol. I don't know if it does it still, but the part where you meet the carnotaurus full body, he'll come up out the side onto the track and come after you!!! I got off that ride shaking like a leaf lol. Loved it though! (Edit: I also had no idea I was in line for a ride going through the institute, my kid brain was under the impression it was a museum lol.)

dinosaur is one of my favorite rides, i think it's so underrated especially now after flight of passage, and it's really fun with really great animatronics and effects
Before Expedition Everest came to the park, Dinoland USA was the part of the park we would always go to first. Now it's Everest first, (mainly because it's my mom's favorite). Then immediately to Dinoland.
I think disney should make a star-studded, big budget, scientifically accurate cgi remake of fantasia's rite of spring. Let's face it dinosaurs are a... ahem... quote-unquote... 'more-often-than-not-underused-trend' amongst the disney company and aren't that popular. Well, in my opinion, at least 🤔. I think a live action photo-realistic remake is just what the dinosaurs need to make a comeback. P.s. I hope the rest of dinoland **never** gets removed! (Not saying I agree with poseidon or anything that's just **my** opinion no need to barrage me with backlash)

@@PoseidonEntertainment I'm just saying that I think they're not very popular 'franchise-wise' how often do **you** see disney selling toys, spinoff video games, and other merchandise based off of these magnificent creatures I mean look at the movies and shows we got so far: fantasia, dinosaur from 2000, the good dinosaur, gigantosaurus, and even this new mix of cowboys and dinosaurs show on disney junior that suspiciously looks as if its been taking creative liberties from ray harryhausen's the valley of gwangi. Seems like a pretty 'small' trend in my opinion. Disney hasn't even made plush toys of the dinosaurs from rite of spring. Another thing I noticed was that the Dinostore consists of mostly generic Disney merchandise. The Dinosaur exit shop seems to have a decent number of dinosaur themed items, but why not extend it to the entire land?
Dinosaur the movie He’s under rated in my opinion. I absolutely love riding the Disneyland train and going through the dinosaur exhibit when I’m at Disneyland. To me it’s just imagination and its core.
DinoLand is my number one favorite land. You're right. It does deserve more love. If I were to change anything, I'd recolor some of the Triceratops red, blue, orange, and keep the teal. And maybe add some references to the tv show Dinosaurs.

Really enjoyed the video and learning about Disney's take on dinosaurs. My ONLY slight misgiving is when you mentioned that interest in dinosaurs was revived in the 1970's, it would have been a good moment to also mention that it was in 1983 Michael Crichton conceptualized the idea of screen play about dinosaurs which later led to his novel Jurassic Park in 1990, which of course is what the blockbuster film is based on. I thought it was interesting to leave out the origin of Jurassic Park, but that's my humble take. Really love your videos!

Fantasia introduced my dinosaur obsessed self to classical music. But Disney wasn't the first to put music to animation. German avant-garde cinema was doing this in the early 20th century, using various motifs, including abstraction.

I feel that the whole theme of the park feels more last minute choices than any other land. I feel that with modern Disney imagineering we have today, we would have something more grand and more in-depth like having the whole park taking place in the past with some attractions having more realistic dinosaur animatronics and maybe better rides that could completely change the experience all together. Possibilities are endless my dude.
As much as I think that DinoLand needs some serious upgrades, I don't have faith in current leadership to not create some half-baked IP tie-in instead of actual quality attractions and theming.
The dinosaurs at Primeval World really need to be updated to look more scientifically accurate. They updated the Yeti animatronic from the Matterhorn to look more ape-like, might as well bite the bullet and have the dinosaurs stop dragging their tails and sprawling their legs like lizards (and for goodness sake, give the T-Rex the correct number of fingers).
I kind of disagree. What I like about the Primeval World is that it's almost like a museum piece. I know the whole "Disney isn't a museum" spiel, but the railroad seems to be the perfect place to preserve these historic animatronics.
I've had an idea in my head for quite a while, that Disney should bring a time-traveling themed coaster to the area. A kind of spiritual successor to The Excavator.
Not that bad of a video and I strongly disagree with most parts that you’ve made on the video especially with Dinosaur 2000, my favorite dinosaur movies ever and for the most part, it’s not forgettable and boring, (that would be The Good Dinosaur and Walking with Dinosaurs Movie from 2013) it’s a interesting and incredible movies in my childhood. This is where Disney used to be good with dinosaurs and we need Disney to make more dinosaur movies like they did back in the day. Despite the things that I’ve mentioned, Disney should make more dinosaur movies like they did back in the day so people could like dinosaurs again instead of Disney releasing generic and boring films. Overall, not that bad but not that great either, just okay but pretty forgettable in my opinion. I love dinosaurs but I really don’t like Disney.
They should! They should do more hand-drawn and CGI dinosaur movies! I love dinosaurs and dinosaur movies and the 2000 Disney movie “Dinosaur” is one of my favorites throughout the years! It’s an underrated cult classic that deserves more love and recognition and I want a 4K IMAX 3D release of Dinosaur!
Primeval Whirl has like the higest hight requirement to ride in all the Disney Florida Parks. My five year old brother at the time could not go on it because it.Yet could on the exact same coster layout a few before weeks before could in a local fair in UK.
I agree. People are always criticizing Dinosaur as using the dark as a crutch instead of theming, but I think that it's a conscious design choice meant to make it scarier and simulate a longer journey.

I think that's the point. Because Animal Kingdom has always been about human relationships to animals, Countdown to Extinction covered the scarier, cinematic take on dinosaurs, whereas the rest of the land emulated the kitsch culture that defined them pre-Jurassic Park. It's certainly an interesting design choice, and one that often goes under-appreciated.
@@missleiadragonitemaster7597 No. Pteranodon is the name of only one genus. The name of the order that Pteranodon along with Pterodactylus, Ornithocheirus, etc. belong to is called Pterosauria which are known colloquially as “Pterosaurs”.
I remeber riding this for the first time with my cousin who had a fear of dinosaurs and we had no idea it would be another dinosaur ride haha you could not get away from dinosaurs at Disney. She was a teenager though so it was pretty funny.
Just discovered this channel and you’ve got a subscriber! I’m very interested in the kinds of unique topics you cover. I thought it was very clever to use Restaurant-osaurus as a transition into Fantasia and to your conclusion. And I definitely agree that Dinoland has a lot of hidden genius and people who act like Dinosaur is somehow a worse Indiana Jones just don’t get it. (And to be fair, I believe the computer just identifies the raptor as “raptor” without specifying what kind, just like it says “sauropod” without saying what kind) Though I wish there had been mention of Gertie, that first animated dinosaur, being found in Echo Lake at Hollywood Studios or the dinosaur puppet made during the Living Character Initiative. Perhaps it would’ve been slightly off topic, but there was also a parade in Hollywood Studios (MGM at the time) dedicated to the Jim Henson Dinosaur tv show. There’s also some cool history about the t-rex casting out front of Dinosaur that I will leave in another comment so hopefully some people might read it.
Wow, what trip down memory lane and did it feel good to learn more about the history of Dino Land USA, I don't care about people saying it's boring or goofy, that is why I enjoy it so much and why Animal Kingdom is my favorite park in Disney World. Man I love Disneys dinosaur I always thought it was a good film maybe coulda been during the time of the dinosaurs and not after the impact makeing a desert instead of a lush green pallet and the wieard choice of dinosaurs carnotaurs and velocirapror never meet neither oviraptor or kooloschous so wieard ecosystem but regardless it was awesome and a underrated film that alot of people half don't understand but for the other half understand how good it is and what's happening and for a sequel to be made would be epic to see, then dino land well I never 100% knew the story I did understand the tackyness of it and western inspiration and felt the charm of it, then the ride omg whare to begin it's epic definitely one of my favorite rides their and I love the museum opening to it it just adds to the expireance plus free museum tour but the main ride the dinosaurs are awesome I even learned about some new ones like alleraimus and to see the carnotaurs in action just epic, then the Ellen ride man thoes dinos are sweet it's older dinosaur depictions in their wich you don't see anymore just old classic old school dinosaurs. But their is 1 Disney thing still dinosaurs the good dinosaur yes I think it's pixar it's still Disney now that film ok snake has legs but then it goes crazy definitely a more kids take on them. That thing you mentioned about the intend backstory for Dinoland USA to fit with the theme, it's sad really, how many people always refuse to look at the full details. Still, I wonder what will Dinoland become in the future, especially with Disney's buyout of Fox which came with its' many entertainment brands like Ice Age by Blue Sky Studios, which sadly closed down because it was hard for Disney to run 3 animation studios at once due to the pandemic, and even becoming the owners of National Geographic, which they've made several documentaries on dinosaurs and other prehistoric animals. Perhaps, they will change up Dinoland USA to be a better prehistoric land people will actually enjoy. I know the rumors that the Dinosaur ride will be replaced by an Indiana Jones ride, but honestly, I don't believe it because why would there be an Indiana Jones ride at Animal Kingdom of all places? That film franchise doesn't really have anything to do with animals or wildlife conversation, besides, you would expect an Indiana Jones ride to be at Disney's Hollywood Studios rather than at Animal Kingdom. Also, I actually had a vision that The Good Dinosaur from Pixar would be popular, gain a cult following and eventually show up at Dinoland USA at Disney's Animal Kingdom, but sadly, that never happened because the film flopped and is forgotten. So, the next time that you guys hear someone say that A Bug's Life is Pixar's most forgotten and underaided film, tell them and have them look up The Good Dinosaur.
As Michael Eisner was leaving, Disney just hired a lot of glorified accountants as executives of their theme park division. These are the guys believed that people only ever went to Magic Kingdom, and we're experiencing the effects of that mentality.
Much needed praise for Dinoland. I'm glad to see someone who understands the land and appreciates how it relates to DAK's overlying message.

Just a correction that I only just discovered in producing a new video:
The Universe of Energy actually closed in 1996 and reopened the same year as Ellen's Energy Adventure, whereas in the video I stated it opened in 1994 just a year after the release of Jurassic Park. I'm unsure of where I got the original date, but the timing changes a lot of context around the new retheme of the ride and the premier of Countdown to Extinction only two years later, chasing the success of Jurassic Park's film franchise. It appears that the film didn't seem to have much of an influence on updating the Universe of Energy, still opting to keep the more antiquated perception of dinosaurs intact.
Also, a few other corrections made by people in the comments:

Thank you for giving Dinoland it’s due!! I always loved it... and when I’m at Disney by myself, it’s one if the lands I spend the most time in. And DINOSAUR, when it works and all animatronics are functioning, is one of my favorite rides of all time.
I'm not gonna lie, I do like when some of the animatronics aren't functioning. There's a number of "B mode" carnotaurus' that can be seen throughout when this happens and it's a rare look into how they designed the attraction to still keep functioning even when the animatronics don't.

I agree, Magic Kingdom is missing so many great attractions from Disneyland. That being said, I do think Magic Kingdom has its own unique quirks that Disneyland doesn't, so it's an acceptable trade-off.
While it's true that the dinos in the Rite of Spring were based a lot on Charles R Knight's work along with Willis O' Brien's stop motion animation, but they were actually a few things that do make some of the short ahead of it's time. 6:58- 8:15 While yes the T-Rex has been shown standing erect, you don't really see him drag his tail like in Ghost of Slumber Mountain, The Lost World, and King Kong. Most of the time it has his tail somewhat above the ground, and semi horizontal. While the T-Rex did had the tail on the ground during the finale of the fight(When he breaks the Stego's neck), but it's mostly when he's standing still in place, and was kind of using it as like a counter weight to balance when tipping over the Stegosaurus. The Ceratosaurus were even shown with horizontal tails, during the extinction scene. Plus the herbivores did behave more like animals, in fact they shown them living in herds and even them taking care of their young. Which back then was thought to be incorrect, but is correct now.
I had noticed some of those things, but I had assumed it was a matter of artistic liberty being taken. Do you know if this was done with the intention of portraying them in a new scientific light?

I respect Disney for coming up with a unique theme despite the budget and constraints, but if you have to explain to people the theme and why it's actually good actually, then it's not well themed. I always thought Dino Land USA was a cheap work around a la California adventure curtesy of Michael Eisner. Still sad we never got the mythical creatures land.
I believe that the majority of theming is the same as opening day, so it was always there. I think the issue is that people don't simply take the time to look at the details of anything, not just this. How many people have discarded Animal Kingdom as "just a zoo" without taking in the immersive theming? I think taking the lesson of "take a closer look and you'll begin to see the story" is something we should promote in theme park culture. The more people who it explain it to others, the more we'll see it become a norm.
You know, that's a good point. We should all slow down and pay attention to the details and theming more. I would also like to quote Kelly Kapoor: "you don't hear a theme, you see it." But well made video anyway. Really like your channel.

The whole thing doesn't seem to do a good job of portraying its themes and at the same time ends up becoming a stereotype in it of itself. It doesn't really balance it with any realism to make the tackyness feel part of something, and goes too far with it too to where it loses its thematic relevance. As you said, it's not well themed, it's basically poorly executed. That is the problem with Dinoland USA. Plus why do theme parks have to have a story any way? Aren't they just suppose to be simple entertainment?

Story is a huge part of much of entertainment. In the case of Disney parks, they are almost the entire experience.
Take away the sets and characters of Pirates and what are you left with? Would you pay to ride a slightly wet plastic seat that will go over one drop in the middle of otherwise gentle turns or straightaways moving at 3 mph?
Turn off the screen for Star Tours and all you get is an uncomfortably mobile chair.
Removing the dome and queue of Space Mountain would take all the meaning and immersion along with it.

I was talking about having a big, convoluted story for an entire park instead of just the set, characters, and things that make the experience like screens and domes and such. The problem I have is the unnecessary thing to have an entire story for an entire theme park, even though they are only made for fun rides with a theme, but not a story.
Pretty much no one will look hard enough at things to see a story, especially if this story has a consistent beginning, middle, and end. They won't because no one will have the time or go through every ride in order that progresses this story to do so. Not to mention, they are terrible at conveying stories unless you're like Sherlock Holmes. Theme parks can't convey a huge, complex story like movies or shows can and are made to be dumb fun rides in general.
You don't need a convoluted story to make a great theme park. Plus, the story in this theme park was terribly executed. Different entertainment has different ways of how it's done. Rides can tell stories, but not entire parks. Even if it could, they are unnecessary and can do or do without them.
2000's Dinosaur is NOT forgettable. That film is hands-down the most CRIMINALLY UNDERRATED Disney movie of ALL time.
Yes it is. I liked seeing the iguanodont play the hero in the movie and they need to do a sequel with a giganotosaurus as the villain.

Awesome video! I love Dinoland's kitsch, and it's always been a place to get a fun change of pace on a long day at the parks for me. I'm bummed to hear about Primeval Whirl, but excited for whatever replaces it!
It's interesting to see what goes in its place, though there haven't seemed to be any rumors of a new attraction. If I had to guess though? Probably more midway games. I had heard that Primeval Whirl was a maintenance nightmare, so that's likely why it's being scrapped.
ThE DINOSAUR Ride at Animal Kingdom is great. One of my favorites from when I was there in 2015 with my family. You're right that it feels more like a Universal horror ride. My son (9 at the time) got scared lol.
I think some of the bitterness towards Dinoland USA is mostly due to it being picked over making Beastly Kingdom, because it was the cheaper option.

Fun fact about the 2 scientists fighting over who could find the most bones: is also the story Crichton’s last full book “Dragon teeth” is based on and is an amazing book, i personally believe rivals Jurassic Park in thrill.
It is a good book, but far away from JP in thrill. Perhaps closer to Crichtons The lost world. Sphere and Kongo is Crichton books much closer to Jurassic park.

Actually the early stop-motion didn't show the dinosaurs as slow and plodding. Yes, they were incorrectly shown as standing and moving nearly straight up and dragging their tails, but they look pretty quick and fast and agile, especially in The Lost World and in King Kong.

The dinosaur attractions at Disneyland and at animal kingdom are some of my favorite things to see at the resorts. I do miss the universe of energy ride which was my favorite ride at epcot.

A great fix for Dinoland would be building the canceled Excavator Coaster in the Dinorama area.
I was never really a fan of The Excavator, but I do like some of its ideas. I've always thought that a time traveling coaster bringing you through portals back in time from an old dig site and reusing the location would have been interesting.
For the film Dinosaur, we used the Carnators because the T-rex was used already in Don Bluth's "Land Before Time" as well as "Jurassic Park".

As someone who worked at Dino land in the carnival area, one of the reasons I think the kitsch doesn’t work effectively is because the theme of “cheap” should have been only surface level. The actual rides are the ONLY ones in all Disney that were bought offsite and not made in house by imagineers. I think if the rides were actually quality under the guise of cheap, people would have been more on board with the idea. When you pay to get into Disney, you don’t want cheap. But if it’s DESIGNED to LOOK cheap but is ACTUALLY quality, people often understand the concept more (similar to how people like dilapidated places if its underneath quality is top notch like The Tower of Terror). The Dino land rides were janky and uncomfortable and hurt even . Not to mention primeval whirl was stupidly designed to appeal highly to very young kids but had a very restrictive height requirement.
Dinosaur is awesome. Wish it got some TLC and got a nice refurb and brought back some old effects.
I think it got a pretty decent refurb back in 2016 (or 2017?) adding in the screen based compys. I would like to see the ornithocheirus swoop down on riders again though.

The swooping ornithicareius would be awesome as well. Even with a recent refurb, I still feel like some effects don’t work as often as they should, though with large animatronics I guess that’s to be expected.
I'm sorry, but if Dino Land USA's theming is too subtle for audiences to understand, that's the designers' fault, not the audience's. They were creative to be sure, but huge theme park lands need to immediately communicate their major story ideas and provide details second. Visual design is all about communication, and that includes architecture and engineering design. You can make great works of art, but if you don't wear your message on your sleeve then you can't expect average audiences to understand it.

Well, the term pterodactyl is actually correct for the ornithocheirus and both uses, as pterodactyl is an all-encompassing word for any pterosaur genus (not just pteranodon; the other “pterodactyl” used). Pterosaurs are also not dinosaurs but are somewhat closely related.
People dis Animal Kingdom's "Dinoland" because "It has to be explained," but the "explanation" is all over the place when you're there! I think the underlying story is so obvious, once you get a hint, that people resent they didn't figure it out on their own and hold it against the land.
I am not a rides person and was not aware there was a Dinosaur movie that is in any sense connected to the ride. I guess I'll tell my youngest about it, but it's a pity I missed that fact the first time she went.
Great video, as always. Often agree with you, but even when I don't, I find your observations interesting.
I think the design philosophy behind Animal Kingdom is a bit too highbrow for the average person. I love how the lands tell their stories through what you can deduct just from observation and I think was a bit ahead of its time. I don't think that having to explain the story to people is necessarily a bad thing as it can get somewhat complex, but I think the online community has definitely helped elevate how people perceive this land. Hopefully more exposure to the narrative helps to continue changing perception, even with the cheap additions in Dinorama.

I was fortunate to take a VIP walking tour of Universe of Energy's dinosaur section in 2002... while the ride was functioning! We got to see the animatronics up close and touch a few of them, hiding from the ride vehicles when they passed through via strategically placed planters and exit corridors. They are amazingly detailed & textured, holding up even to close scrutiny.
I do hope some of the dinos are saved, and possibly relocated to a section of the WDW Railroad (now undergoing refurbishment while they build the TRON lightcycles) as a tribute to the DL railroad's primordial dinosaur section. That'd be fitting.
Lol dinosaur the ride being compared to a horror house on wheels is to on point. I was a lil lil kid almost slipped out the straps at the first carnotaurus meet where it's just the head and arms. Sitting in the front left seat right next to it, vehicles tilts and I go sliding lol. I don't know if it does it still, but the part where you meet the carnotaurus full body, he'll come up out the side onto the track and come after you!!! I got off that ride shaking like a leaf lol. Loved it though! (Edit: I also had no idea I was in line for a ride going through the institute, my kid brain was under the impression it was a museum lol.)

Before Expedition Everest came to the park, Dinoland USA was the part of the park we would always go to first. Now it's Everest first, (mainly because it's my mom's favorite). Then immediately to Dinoland.

Another thing I noticed was that the Dinostore consists of mostly generic Disney merchandise. The Dinosaur exit shop seems to have a decent number of dinosaur themed items, but why not extend it to the entire land?

Dinosaur the movie He’s under rated in my opinion. I absolutely love riding the Disneyland train and going through the dinosaur exhibit when I’m at Disneyland. To me it’s just imagination and its core.

Really enjoyed the video and learning about Disney's take on dinosaurs. My ONLY slight misgiving is when you mentioned that interest in dinosaurs was revived in the 1970's, it would have been a good moment to also mention that it was in 1983 Michael Crichton conceptualized the idea of screen play about dinosaurs which later led to his novel Jurassic Park in 1990, which of course is what the blockbuster film is based on. I thought it was interesting to leave out the origin of Jurassic Park, but that's my humble take. Really love your videos!

Fantasia introduced my dinosaur obsessed self to classical music. But Disney wasn't the first to put music to animation. German avant-garde cinema was doing this in the early 20th century, using various motifs, including abstraction.

I feel that the whole theme of the park feels more last minute choices than any other land. I feel that with modern Disney imagineering we have today, we would have something more grand and more in-depth like having the whole park taking place in the past with some attractions having more realistic dinosaur animatronics and maybe better rides that could completely change the experience all together. Possibilities are endless my dude.
As much as I think that DinoLand needs some serious upgrades, I don't have faith in current leadership to not create some half-baked IP tie-in instead of actual quality attractions and theming.

The dinosaurs at Primeval World really need to be updated to look more scientifically accurate. They updated the Yeti animatronic from the Matterhorn to look more ape-like, might as well bite the bullet and have the dinosaurs stop dragging their tails and sprawling their legs like lizards (and for goodness sake, give the T-Rex the correct number of fingers).
I kind of disagree. What I like about the Primeval World is that it's almost like a museum piece. I know the whole "Disney isn't a museum" spiel, but the railroad seems to be the perfect place to preserve these historic animatronics.
Watching Poseidon videos and playing minecraft is a vibe 10/10 would recommend

I want to say Dinoland USA, for Americans especially, feels too close to "home" in theming and therefor doesn't feel as intentional as it actually is.

I've had an idea in my head for quite a while, that Disney should bring a time-traveling themed coaster to the area. A kind of spiritual successor to The Excavator.
Not that bad of a video and I strongly disagree with most parts that you’ve made on the video especially with Dinosaur 2000, my favorite dinosaur movies ever and for the most part, it’s not forgettable and boring, (that would be The Good Dinosaur and Walking with Dinosaurs Movie from 2013) it’s a interesting and incredible movies in my childhood.
This is where Disney used to be good with dinosaurs and we need Disney to make more dinosaur movies like they did back in the day.
Despite the things that I’ve mentioned, Disney should make more dinosaur movies like they did back in the day so people could like dinosaurs again instead of Disney releasing generic and boring films.
Overall, not that bad but not that great either, just okay but pretty forgettable in my opinion.

They should! They should do more hand-drawn and CGI dinosaur movies! I love dinosaurs and dinosaur movies and the 2000 Disney movie “Dinosaur” is one of my favorites throughout the years! It’s an underrated cult classic that deserves more love and recognition and I want a 4K IMAX 3D release of Dinosaur!

Primeval Whirl has like the higest hight requirement to ride in all the Disney Florida Parks. My five year old brother at the time could not go on it because it.Yet could on the exact same coster layout a few before weeks before could in a local fair in UK.

I agree. People are always criticizing Dinosaur as using the dark as a crutch instead of theming, but I think that it's a conscious design choice meant to make it scarier and simulate a longer journey.

Okay kudos to the team of themeing the park making it tacky on purpose because it would be something I'd see someone doing irl.
I think that's the point. Because Animal Kingdom has always been about human relationships to animals, Countdown to Extinction covered the scarier, cinematic take on dinosaurs, whereas the rest of the land emulated the kitsch culture that defined them pre-Jurassic Park. It's certainly an interesting design choice, and one that often goes under-appreciated.
Not to be “that guy”’ but Ornithocheirus is a pterosaur, which aren’t dinosaurs.
And Pterasaur itself is just the name of the species as a whole. The official (if I'm not being a space cadet on this) name for them is Pteranodon!
@@missleiadragonitemaster7597 No. Pteranodon is the name of only one genus. The name of the order that Pteranodon along with Pterodactylus, Ornithocheirus, etc. belong to is called Pterosauria which are known colloquially as “Pterosaurs”.

I remeber riding this for the first time with my cousin who had a fear of dinosaurs and we had no idea it would be another dinosaur ride haha you could not get away from dinosaurs at Disney. She was a teenager though so it was pretty funny.
So it would be cool if the Carnotaurus fossil is the dino from the ride

I thought it was very clever to use Restaurant-osaurus as a transition into Fantasia and to your conclusion. And I definitely agree that Dinoland has a lot of hidden genius and people who act like Dinosaur is somehow a worse Indiana Jones just don’t get it. (And to be fair, I believe the computer just identifies the raptor as “raptor” without specifying what kind, just like it says “sauropod” without saying what kind)
Though I wish there had been mention of Gertie, that first animated dinosaur, being found in Echo Lake at Hollywood Studios or the dinosaur puppet made during the Living Character Initiative. Perhaps it would’ve been slightly off topic, but there was also a parade in Hollywood Studios (MGM at the time) dedicated to the Jim Henson Dinosaur tv show. There’s also some cool history about the t-rex casting out front of Dinosaur that I will leave in another comment so hopefully some people might read it.
Wow, what trip down memory lane and did it feel good to learn more about the history of Dino Land USA, I don't care about people saying it's boring or goofy, that is why I enjoy it so much and why Animal Kingdom is my favorite park in Disney World. Dinosaur may not be better than Jurassic Park for most, but for me, it's pretty good. Great video good sir, stay safe and have a great day.
Dinosaur is one of my favourite Disney rides, I went to Disney world years ago but it is still fresh in my mind.
It's a visceral experience. It's a shame that current Disney leadership is too afraid to design attractions like this today. It's one of my favorites as well.

Man I love Disneys dinosaur I always thought it was a good film maybe coulda been during the time of the dinosaurs and not after the impact makeing a desert instead of a lush green pallet and the wieard choice of dinosaurs carnotaurs and velocirapror never meet neither oviraptor or kooloschous so wieard ecosystem but regardless it was awesome and a underrated film that alot of people half don't understand but for the other half understand how good it is and what's happening and for a sequel to be made would be epic to see, then dino land well I never 100% knew the story I did understand the tackyness of it and western inspiration and felt the charm of it, then the ride omg whare to begin it's epic definitely one of my favorite rides their and I love the museum opening to it it just adds to the expireance plus free museum tour but the main ride the dinosaurs are awesome I even learned about some new ones like alleraimus and to see the carnotaurs in action just epic, then the Ellen ride man thoes dinos are sweet it's older dinosaur depictions in their wich you don't see anymore just old classic old school dinosaurs. But their is 1 Disney thing still dinosaurs the good dinosaur yes I think it's pixar it's still Disney now that film ok snake has legs but then it goes crazy definitely a more kids take on them. But ya for dinosaur stuff Disney has so little to provide ya definitely have to look for them I'm glad I found out about the story behind it it just makes it cooler.
That thing you mentioned about the intend backstory for Dinoland USA to fit with the theme, it's sad really, how many people always refuse to look at the full details. Still, I wonder what will Dinoland become in the future, especially with Disney's buyout of Fox which came with its' many entertainment brands like Ice Age by Blue Sky Studios, which sadly closed down because it was hard for Disney to run 3 animation studios at once due to the pandemic, and even becoming the owners of National Geographic, which they've made several documentaries on dinosaurs and other prehistoric animals. Perhaps, they will change up Dinoland USA to be a better prehistoric land people will actually enjoy. I know the rumors that the Dinosaur ride will be replaced by an Indiana Jones ride, but honestly, I don't believe it because why would there be an Indiana Jones ride at Animal Kingdom of all places? That film franchise doesn't really have anything to do with animals or wildlife conversation, besides, you would expect an Indiana Jones ride to be at Disney's Hollywood Studios rather than at Animal Kingdom. Also, I actually had a vision that The Good Dinosaur from Pixar would be popular, gain a cult following and eventually show up at Dinoland USA at Disney's Animal Kingdom, but sadly, that never happened because the film flopped and is forgotten. So, the next time that you guys hear someone say that A Bug's Life is Pixar's most forgotten and underaided film, tell them and have them look up The Good Dinosaur.
