CROSBY, STILLS, NASH, & YOUNG at Wembley
    by Robin Denselow
    The Guardian
    September 16, 1974
CROSBY, Stills, Nash, and Young are the American entertainment phenomenon of the year. Temporarily reformed, after a three-year split, they have not recorded an album of new songs but instead have toured around the American stadiums, drawing audiences in their tens of thousands. On Saturday American big business, vast scale rock came to London, when CSNY played Wembley Stadium. The official estimate of the crowd was 72,000, who had each paid £3.50 for a 10-hour show that for mere starters included The Band and Joni Mitchell.
In the abstract, a musical event on that scale may sound absurd or slightly horrific, but, I suspect to the amazement of all concerned, it worked triumphantly. All the elements were right; a gigantic stage at one end of the pitch bristled with amplifiers and electronic hardware, ensuring that the sound balance and quality was near-perfect; the sun shone; there was no hint of trouble from the crowds; and the music provided a constantly varied, fresh and technically dazzling encyclopaedia of American rock.
CSNY played for three and a half hours, made no attempt at a stage show, and acted as if they were giving a casual recital in a friend's back room. Their appeal was in many ways that of the Beatles: each of the four is well-known, has a distinctive personality, and has written excellent songs. Yet they fitted together like a jigsaw, both in the electric sets and when they took turns with the acoustic guitar, with one playing solo and the others helping out with immaculate harmonies. And whatever they were playing there was always a strong melody somewhere near the surface.

Sad to hear of David Crosby's passing today. These songs, this group, and this time in my life bring tears as I think about our youth, their youth, and the passing of time. I am 72, but I have the heart of that young man who listened to the greatest music of all time. I think when the last Baby-boomer passes, he/she should turn off the lights and take the music with them. :) No one will ever understand our time and our hearts.

Im 70 now and this music still moves me. I remember how I heard the album De ja vu for the first time with some friends. The sound of the band was very unique and I was immediately taken in. I had just begun to play guitar and could not comprehend how they were doing it. I still enjoy to pick up my guitar and to play along with them. It has definitely influenced my way of playing, even my conception of the way an acoustic should sound. Greetings to all fellow boomers.❤

The social and artistic movement was global. I just caught the end as a young teen. I'd say things really began to change in the mid-late 70's. This show had that feel just hard to describe. The "production" didn't exist like it does today but the spirit and purpose were unmistakable. We wanted to change the world. As a generation.

As Chris O'Dell (one of their tour managers) says in her book (Miss O'Dell) about when she agreed to take them on: "The title 'tour manager' encompassed everything from baby sitter to mother, secretary, therapist, problem solver, travel agent, maid and alarm clock. David ranted, Stephen pouted, Graham mediated and Neil stayed as far away from the madness as he could. It was the Never Ending Tour that went on and on... the most dysfunctional gathering of egos in the history of rock & roll." (As for me, I love Chris for her inspiration that gave us George's song 'Miss O'Dell.)

When it was CSN&Y ( here & there), I would go so far as to say I think Stephen Stills is more talented than Neil Young. I wish he had had more success as a solo artist. Neil definitely had the most success of the four of them as a solo artist.

(his Manassas stuff is so good). Neil playing keyboards most of the time with a "jazz solo" during deja vu! "Word game " OK too much coke!, but amazing and still sadly relevant.. "First things" very funny, but pretty damn good. Four in the morning the driver and his girl comeback to the bus and me and my mate are hiding up the back. After a bit of fumbling and grunting up the front he takes her home over the Chelsea bridge. He then drives to his place and we start the log walk back to the city centre. What a line up, one of my best concerts ever. Arrived home shattered late Sunday evening straight to bed.

I’m not sure I’d go as far as prime. There’s wayy too much coke going on (you can basically hear it coming out of Stephen’s amp) and too much volume to support nice harmonies. 1970 was probably them at their prime as CSNY. That’s not to say I don’t enjoy the 1974 tour, it has a certain roughness that’s quite appealing. But for my money I’d see them 100 times in 1970 before I saw a 74 gig.
