I make this into a liquid and refill in an old Lidl 2.2litre canister. I use 1/8 cup of borax, 1/8 cup of soda crystals, 1
Bar of Castile or household soap grated and melted into hot water and mix it all together and fill it up. I then use 1/2 cup per 7kg load. Works for us and is dead cheap. Sometimes I add essential oils as well but not always.

Subscribed. I had found a video but it was a US version (which was fab) but I needed a UK take. Great stuff, life changer even!

Thank you for your recipe. I use simple soap for sensitive skins and sea salt plus your other ingredients . (Wiltshire uk)

Pretty certain everything here can be bought in wilkos. Better than liquid detergent and cheaper?

Do you use much less than shop bought laundry detergent? Because a 3kg surf on offer is about £5

I guess you could add stain remover as you need and for a cheaper option don't put the smelly beads

Are soda crystals the same as bicarb soda. I am in Australia

Don’t you add in bicarbonate of soda?

The borax and washing crystals are two of the same thing , borax works best in hot water where the soda crystals work in any temperature, I use soda crystals and baking soda with 20 drop of my favourite essential oils, and 1 or 2 bars of the most natural soap makes a big amount and costs less that £4 , nowhere near £10

Do you put your washing powder in the drawer or straight into the drum?

  • @FrankGutowski-ls8jt

You don’t need the borax substitute, which is sodium sesquicarbonate. It’s a mixed sodium carbonate/bicarbonate salt. You already use soda crystals (sodium carbonate) to soften water. The oxygen bleach is also mostly sodium carbonate.

Would you still add extra soda crystals then?

It depends on how hard the water is. It appears that she already uses an excess of water softeners relative to the amount of soap.

Thank you for that recipe...would it be suitable for coloured clothing or would it be more ideal for 'whites'.

I found some of the cheaper soaps didn’t dissolve in the washing machine and stuck to the washing.
