PLEASE NOTE: We are aviation enthusiasts. These videos are for entertainment purposes only. We are NOT qualified to give flying instruction. All of our videos, including this one, have been significantly edited down from the original full length raw footage. Many radio calls, checklist steps, and other procedures have been omitted to keep the videos a reasonable viewing length. Please speak to a CFI with any flying questions you may have.
You are truly fortunate to get this aircraft. Now the challenge is to not turn it into a $50,000 aircraft by needlessly adding new avionics to it. Consider keeping it basic and affordable for the next guy.
Plus any beginning students who might train in it.
Nine out of ten of the high dollar gang will screw you over for a few dollars - shame !
Don’t fall for that crap young men - Be yourself ! Remember what your folks taught you -
Be good to others - Be nice to people . Thanks for the video fellas .
somebody that gets it
I would agree, a couple ipad mini's would probably suffice if the radio glitch is cleared up.
$50000 is still a good price,
Tip for new players: Don't take your hand off the throttle during the take off roll... if your friction is not set properly you may get the situation where the throttle vibrates away from the full power setting and towards a lower power setting, you don't want that at the best of times let alone hot and high.
This reminds me of the time I was in a crappy old plane and the throttle friction was rusted and didn’t work. I didn’t notice, and as I took my hand of the power after we took it, it slipped all the way to idle. Let’s just say I won’t let that happen again.
This is one of my pet peeves. Such a bad idea to leave your hand off the throttle during take off and landing.
You should keep your hand on the throttle during climb-out, in case you have to make a rapid power change and also to keep it from creeping back towards idle.
JR you looked like you had a death grip on the yoke on climb out. Use that trim control. If you're having to use more than 3 fingers on the yoke you are out of trim. Notice your CFI's fingers on the yoke at the 7:00 minute mark. Never take your hand off the throttle during climb out to a safe altitude. Just my thoughts. $12K for a Cherokee 180? Ridiculous lol.
thinking same thing lol. My brain was like hand on the throttle
I saw and thought the same thing never take your hand off the throttle during the takeoff climb. Give Jeffery a break he's just starting out on his PPL training.
Never take your hand off the throttle during climb out. Friction locks suck. Often vibrate loose.
CFI here who used to own a flight school. That is a $50k airplane all day long to a flight school. If I were you and didn't have my Private or Instrument, I would put dual G5's, GMA345 and a GNX375 and do all my training in that thing. Vacuum systems suck and in that heat its only a matter of time before it fails. That is a perfect training and you really found a diamond in the ruff.
My first airplane was a Piper Colt, built by a AP/IA who taught at a technical school. Paid $7500 for it, put $4000 into it getting it airworthy. Flew it from Hartford CT to Pensacola FL when I sold it to…wait for it… a technical school for AP’s. Thought it was fitting to carry on the prior owners legacy. Used that money to buy a Cherokee 140 and brought it back to life. Sold that and bought my latest Cherokee 140. They’re really easy to work on, cheap to insure and operate and every AP knows how to work on them. You have a great plane there and hope it brings lots of joy!!
I'm pursuing my Private Pilot License (PPL). Could you provide some tips on finding a good deals for a plane?
@@magnus_virAbsolutely! Have a spare $20k just sitting around ready to jump. That way when an airplane that just needs some love comes along, you’re in a position to buy. These guys in this channel have that ability…something few of us have.
I think the paint is fine, polish it up. What needs work is the instrument panel. The first thing I'd do is get a good label maker. Then rearrange the instruments into the basic "T" six pack arrangement. That scattered, smothered, covered, & chunked arrangement it has now would drive me crazy. I had an old Debonair that had that mess of a panel, and I fixed it. So much better.
Truly great deal. I was a part owner in a 1974 180 Archer in the mid 1980’s. Trained and soloed in it, and did IFR time.
An good annual should have made sure all the switches had labels. Check around for a used eyebrow for the instrument panel, plastic trim where it is missing around the windows and change the plexiglas in the storm window. Great deal, and always look for dry country planes.
Unbelievable fabulous purchase, it's what makes your channel special.
About time we get some videos of you working on the controls! That’s awesome man big mile stone
What a sweet deal! I'd love to see a video where you guys detail the inside and outside of the 180, talking about the products and techniques. That would probably help a lot of owners who want to learn to do that stuff themselves.
I always loved flying the bravo transition. I did all of mine at night flying from falcon to Scottsdale and Scottsdale down to Chandler via the bravo. Watching 737 land underneath you is a rad sight lol.
When you guys go do your night hours take the Cherokee. In summers like this when the heat of the day fades as the sun sets the winds calm way down and it’s like flying on glass.
Maneuvers are so much fun in the Cherokee too steep turns stalls are super easy short field and soft field are a ton of fun too.
Great job Jeff. So happy for you and Christian. I love hearing about you and you’re brothers success. Young folks out there should be inspired by the drive you guys have for business.
Brilliant and useful video. Gonna rewatch 👍
Great job. Most of my training was on a PA28-180. Love it.
Great airplane find! Just two suggestions as an observer
1. Despite the weather never fly a vintage aircraft in shorts. Sparks, fire will render you burned and possibly unable to fly.
2. When your messing around filming, adjusting the mixture etc, who is looking out the window for VFR traffic? That's the first priority of any flight crew. Collisions happen....
I’m not a pilot but do you mind explaining why not flying vintage airplanes in shorts
Outstanding. Such a fantastic find.
The Cherokee 180 was a tremendous deal from start to finish! Well done guys JR Aviation, hit the jackpot again. As for the panel and other upgrades, IMHO you should definitely get the avionics upgrades along with a good autopilot and a combination GPS / NAV radio in order to do RNAV and other precision instrument approaches. I'd reccomend the Dynon SkyView HDX family of panels. Finally, I'd spring for new carpets, seat covers and interior upgrades. I wouldn't get a custom interior or anthing excessive. Just stick to simple upgrades and you will make money when you sell it on.
Here. We. Go!
You are a great deal maker! Another really smart buy! Keep up the good work you are amazing! Stay safe!
When you polish, use a toothbrush or other soft brush around rivots. It makes a big difference and saves paint.
Thank you for the video.
Really enjoying the Cherokee 180 videos. What a great airplane for $12,000 investment! I have had a great experience with the Cherokee, I received my Private in a140 way back in 1979.
I've got a few hundred hours in various Cherokees, too. But I got my private in a Piper Colt, a high-wing successor to the Tri-Pacer. A sturdy plane that was laid out and flew much as the Cherokees I flew later.
This is an unbelievable deal. An airworthy aircraft with 4 seats and that will do 120 kts for $12K, in this day and age, just unreal.
Right!
Definite win on this one Jeff! I would not spend any "frills" money on this plane. Keep it basic, have your fun, and then you are not into it for a bunch of additional money when you sell it to the next guy.
Fantastic deal and great plane. Well done.
I’d recommend turning the electric fuel pump off for taxi. That’s the only way to check that your engine driven pump is working. Turn it back on for takeoff. Also, that Cherokee does not have “trailing link landing gear”.😀
Good point. Oh it kind of looks like trailing link!
I have watched your radio work improve greatly. Speaking with confidence now .
What a deal!! Definitely a case of the being in the right place at the right time kind of deal. I'd keep this thing basic, just upgrade what's absolutely necessary. Keep it a cheap plane. Excited to see other content made in this plane!
I love watching this channel
Very cool. Keep your TAS calculator handy.
Good job 👏 enjoyed the video
Love your channel! Great to see you in the left seat! But the instructor is flying? You're killing me! Love you guys.
great flight nice plane! nice porsches! ive got a 2005. 911 convert carerra....love it!
That's a great deal. A perfect training aircraft, those Hershey bar wings perform far better than they look. There is a lot that an aircraft owner can do to the aircraft to improve it's ramp appeal. A pleasant surprise.
Excelente excelente 👍🏼 My brother! Love your videos! Hopefully you'll paint 🎨 and recondition the interior 🛩️✈️✈️🛬
I love your videos you inspired me to get my pilet license
The low annual cost for airworthiness check just blows me away. Great video. Great work. *Thank you for supporting GA like you do. Loving your channel's content! 🤙😊
Great deal, way to go guys.
From the start this is looking good.
❤great channel, truly enjoyable 🇺🇸🇺🇸
Glad it worked out, well done. :)
That is wonderful. WOW another great deal.
Just great loved the project great video and easy annual keep cool .want to see how the paint turns out 😢😂 keep it up !!
awesome from start to finish... Back in the 1970's I trained in the 140 and loved it. The last flight I did was in 1985 going back and forth from Long Island to Atlantic city and back again with the Archer. Miss those days. Now that I'm a grandpa for the 3rd time, I would love to start again and introduce the airways to them.
Keep up the great vids. BTW, how do you guys find these deals??????
It is an awesome deal, and you got a great aircraft
What I would like to see is a nice label for that switch panel so you know what each one does. Even if it is just for audio, it feels like an unnecessary complication to have. Otherwise I am looking forward to seeing how that paint buffs out.
Nice to see you left seat getting some time in. My Cirrus is for sale…. But not at a deal like that.
Spray paint the toggle switch backplate. Add labels.
Congratulations. A great trainer/daily plane for the price of one of your home run Boxsters. That's what I call a win. The more you fly it the better the deal will be. Basically flying for the price of insurance and gas.
In my opinion, you did far better than anyone I know. And it isn't like the ONLY plane you have to fly. I feel like you are in control of this one--you can keep it as is or if you so decide, sell it and make a few quid.
Great Job!!! Thank You... :-)
I could use a deal like that, great job.
$11286. $12286. Amazing worthy of a makeover. 😊
Label the dashboard
Loved this content; more cheap planes😀
Jeez, your watch collection is way more than that! lol. Heck of a deal!
If you love the handling of the 180, you should fly my Bellanca Super Viking 😁
I just picked up a load out of Yuma wish I could’ve been here earlier definitely would’ve came and seen you guys.
Great vid guys, next one please. A bit of polish and a little work on the Dash, instrument panel and it’s done. Go get your licences! 👍
PLEASE DO an update on your status as a pilot in training- hours, certs, etc… left? Awesome deal; I so enjoy your videos.
Looks like a great deal! Use the spare budget to buy and install an engine monitor.
WOW!!! If I could still see and pass an exam, I would throw 15 grand at you in a flash! Nice plane! My brother did his training and check ride in a Cherokee!
Boy. What a deal. I wish I could fall into something like this. I haven't heard about any for sale up here in Alaska.
Any comment on the annual not being sufficient should also think about what the IA has to gain from doing dodgy work. For not a huge cost to sign the documentation to say and aircraft is safe indicates that they were genuinely happy to put their name on the safety of the plane.
Ease the grip on the yoke. Only one hand. The other should be on the throttle until safe altitude or cruise.
Wow! Deal of the decade!!
Budget interior refresh. Can you re-spray and re-label everything?
Finally a haircut 👍🏻
He missed that off the price list .... 😂
😂😂😂😂
Fr tho 😂
Hey that's a super sweet find a.d a great plane. Of ots something your interested in there a Duke in Granbury Texas that os for sale cheap but I don't k ow much about it. It has been here 3 or 4 years and it does run.
Is oil spectrum analysis done a the annual? Required on any schedule? Great Buy!!!
Great deal I figured it would be about 17000$ . I’m sure you are going to ask a lot more for it when you sell it. Really enjoyed the content. Thanks 😁
Nicely done. We paid 8000 more for our used 7 year old minivan. Such a deal on a great plane.
Neat old gal!
You need to move some instruments around in the panel. But weird having Alt & VSI tucked down low yet Nav gauge up top.
Enjoy your Cherokee, that and Arrow II my fav light planes!
Once again guys, this is a simply priceless video for a guy like me. The view flying the plane is absolutely what I needed to see and somewhat experience. As a retired Army aviator (Blackhawk) that have never been in a small aircraft like this, it was great to see that view. I have two years before permanent retirement and videos like this will keep me motivated to get my private pilots license before I retire. I'm glad you mentioned the pilot institute as I'm going to get started with them ASAP to start my private pilot license journey, and hopefully be licensed in 2 years before retirement. Without a doubt, the Cherokee 180 will be the plane I will target to own. Don't know if a deal like that is in my future here in the Atlanta area, but I'll be looking....I give you guys a huge U.S. Army Chief Warrant Officer salute!!!
Maybe look into an AirTex interior upgrade. Pretty inexpensive as interior restoration goes and you can probably get door cards, carpet, and new headliner to match the seats since they're in decent shape. The carpet on the walls is really janky and has to go.
Might as well clean up the panel and install the JPI since you're at it.
You definitely found a dimoned in the ruff with this one..👍👍
If the paint buffs out nicely and only leaves the ragged edges of the graphics, just cover those edges with pin stripes. Cheap and easy, if that’s possible.
Pretty good price. I thought it'd go $30k, mainly because of other "cheap" aircraft and cars I've seen rehabbed on TH-cam. Figure for most people, the BUYER would have to do that $10k annual, but that still beats my $30k guess.
Well done! That's how you make your money, I guess: Buy low, sell high!
Man that was an excellent deal. My dad bought an ultralight plane, a rans s12 that needed work to be done for 11,500 dollars and you bought yours for cheaper, that’s crazy.
If you don’t mind, let’s see more of your flight training in your 180. I think it’s the plane to get you both to your private.
They still don’t have their licences?
I can confirm they are very economical airplanes. I have a 65 model Cherokee 180. At 9,500 it burns 6.5-7 gph. I think that’s quite reasonable for the speed you get.
Ok i have been watching your videos for some time now and just subscribed to your channel my question is how old is too old to learn to fly ?
Given how much you've been studying the Piper Cherokee, as well as TH-camr and new pilot ChloeMichelle1987 with her Cherokee, I about feel like you two and any experts you can find should do a livestream together about these planes, they built lots of them in lots of variants, makes my head spin a little. LOL
You crack me up 🥰
Nice deal.
Aviation Troll Kings 🤣 Kidding. Been enjoying this series. What a steal! Personally, I’m not as obsessed about the appearance. Only expense I would add would be some type of GPS. 650 or 750 at this stage. A good engine monitors not a bad idea either. That’s it. Auto pilot if you wanted to make it a cross country plane. Detailing the outside and getting rid of any oxidized paint. Polishing it up. That would give new life. A nice clean panel would be a value ad if you’re doing an avionics and engine monitor upgrade. I would do all those three at the same time.
Cessna Sky Master is a cool plane, maybe you can find one.
Good deal
Thank you, i have been sick at home and waiting for this!
My guess of your total investment so far was 15k. I was wrong!
I tried following your flight with Skyvector, Yuma Municipal in CO messed me up. Finally got Somerton.
Would you consider reorganising the Instruments into a T panel ?
So sick seeing you land out in Scottsdale where I train out of
Once you park the plane does, what does storage cost?
Great find and helluva deal safe flying
a radio in it perhaps rather than the switch type one it has in it
I want to know what it would cost for a decent engine monitor and some navionics with autopilot. A similar setup to what Kay had in her Cherokee 180
Good idea not doing too much to the plane, focusing on what it needs to be functional and remain in good condition. Depending how polishing goes, paint might need to be one of those expenses if for no other reason than getting everything cleaned up, primed, and protected against future corrosion. Given the high temps out west and the altitudes, be sure to keep the effects of density altitude and weight in mind - The hotter it gets the dicier a small 180hp plane becomes... Its not going to perform on quite the same level in July as it might in the dead of winter.
How close are you both to getting your ppl?
You guys are amazing as i live in England 🇬🇧 and could never afford to fly only on holiday 😊 Not looking for sympathy as ive just been diagnosed with kidney cancer you guys are young keep buying the cars and planes 😊 only live once your videos are a escape for me ❤
How much are ownership costs like insurance and hangar?
I'm wondering what the total airframe time is and how many hours are left before a Major Engine Overhaul is due. That might have influenced the final sale price.
