  • Daniel C Jackling would be considered as, the “Father of open-pit mining”. Pioneering the idea to use large steam shovels and trains to mass produce low grade copper, and founder of Utah Copper Company. He was born August 14, 1869, near Appleton City Missouri. Jackling had an interesting life, orphan at two, B S degree at Missouri University of Science and Technology. Was an assistant professor, helped developed cyanide process for extracting gold for Joseph DeLamar at his Golden Gate mill. Own a house on South Temple, moved to San Francisco, leased top floor Saint Francis hotel, bought a 200-acre estate San Mateo, Woodside California, what Steve Jobs purchased and lived in. Jackling owned his own train cars and a yacht all named Cyprus. Correction Steve Jobs won his court case to demolish the Woodside home in 2009 not 1909 as I stated.

Tim, Do you have any pictures or video of the Kennecott Copper Corp. Railway diesel trains, unloading at where ever they unloaded....concentrater or smelter??? Anything to show what that facility looked like?
Was the present smelting facility there or something like that at the time that that GP39-2's were still running? Thank You, for these informative videos.
