Fun fact: Microsoft Comic Chat is an IRC client that started as a research project. It encodes the character pose before every message sent so it can be annoying for people using normal IRC clients.
Wow this brings back some memories. I remember when my dad bought me the Starter Pack at Walmart so I could learn HTML programming on my Windows 3.1 computer. I had to get them on 3.5 diskettes, and I believe I still have the box somewhere at their house.
I'd love to see a followup on this, especially the hell game and browsing more of those cached sites! This really is a fascinating time capsule, I'll have to see if there's an archived iso out there. Thanks for making this video, and on an unrelated note, for your video on installing Windows 98 from USB! It came in handy a few days ago while I was restoring a ThinkPad X31! :)
The author of the infamous title.wma windows xp oobe soundtrack said that it was originally composed in the 90s and meant to be included in something like this ie starter kit. I wonder if this was the actual piece of software it was originally meant to be included with, and if there is actually some sort of soundtrack along the wizard.
By the way MS (Comic) Chat is STILL possible to use today since it's essentially an IRC client. I tried connecting to an IRC server and it works quite well today, even on Windows 10.
Thank you for making these videos! The way you explain and present things makes them really enjoyable. I really appreciate the products and time periods you cover. I was born in the early 2000s, and I'm currently studying to be a software designer. This kind of history is extremely interesting for me to watch, and important for my future career. You cover the stuff my expensive college tuition should be covering 😎 and for free! Thank you!
Awesome content as usual. Potential suggestion: a video on the history of the Microsoft Speech API, and all the SAPI voices would be greatly appreciated. I haven't seen this covered anywhere, and as a screen reader user who got his start on XP with Natural Microsoft Sam, it would be very interesting to here of their origins and development.
Lots of memories in Comic Chat (later Microsoft Chat)- role-playing as the cat, alien, or the guy with the bag on his head, the over-zealous bots that would boot you out if there were even hints of dirty language, and the addition of sound effects and a character designer in later versions. And yes, it was perfectly acceptable to use Comic Sans at the time. IE 3 was probably the first version of IE that really started to take on Netscape (being able to view animated GIFs and marquees as well as use frames and MIDI background music was so exciting at the time). IE 4 was when it started to integrate into the operating system and Internet Mail and News were replaced with Outlook Express - I have a couple of beta versions on CD from that time.
27:45 If you had an internet connection, and could find an IRC server that doesn't mind an ancient client like Comic Chat, you could use that to chat to real humans in 2020. (Also, running the kit with sound might be interesting, as other commenters say…)
IRC doesn't really care, the protocol hasn't exactly changed since and any new capabilities IRCv3 has are designed to only be activated when requested from the client. Plus most big networks still accept unencrypted connections, so this would probably work just fine... not gonna lie I'm tempted to find a copy now

19:30 Oh, well the ActiveX Control Pad definitely makes me curious, so a video on that would be neat. It may have become known as a dangerous thing in more recent years, but an ActiveX editor program? Sounds old and interesting!
I'm surprised how in-depth Microsoft went into explaining internet concepts like certificate authorities, DNS, cryptography, etc. I was just expecting stuff like "click links to go to different pages". Really interesting video as always 👍
One of the biggest reasons why I stayed on Windows 95 (and NT) for a while after its discontinuation was because I *didn’t* have to install Internet Explorer 4 or higher. Anyway, the versions up through 3.03 never bothered me as much since it didn’t update the shell.
$6 for a SSL certificate 😂 If only that were still true, I vaguely recall verisign charging exorbitant prices for them these days... Good thing we have letsencrypt.
I'd also love to see a video about ActiveX, or as I like to call it, the Extend version of Embrace, Extend, Extinguish. Oh, and as with most things from the early web, something that became a huge security risk.
Still better than what's Google, Facebook, and even today's Microsoft is doing nowadays. I miss the days when the only thing I had to worry about is Microsoft dominating the Internet...
This is a great video! I imagine this works with my great, great, great, great, great grandson, Windows 10. Only because it is mostly just HTML files.
