It has to do with how well the national team does in international qualifying as well as with the value if the squad etc. Kevin de Bruyne is amongthe best in world at his position - he won PL many times as well as the Uefa CL. Lukaku is worth tens of millions if not more.

Belgium are still the 3rd overall in world rankings which is honestly crazy to me as at one point they were 1st in the FIFA rankings. They had a Golden Generation when it came to producing talent that was never set up for any success in major tournaments. How can you boast a lot of talented players in their prime and yet still win absolutely nothing especially when you had a team with some of the best players in the premier league at the time in their position. When it came to the big matches in these tournaments they always came up short whenever the lights were the brightest. They have been a little unlucky in a sense that at the 2018 World Cup and 2020 EUROs they were eliminated by their eventual winners (France and Italy respectively). They had to go up against very strong teams, they never really produced when it mattered the most and you can’t be that nearly team every time if you want to win something. At the last World Cup there was this feeling that their best chance of winning something internationally passed them by due to the fact that their team was too old and their previous shortcomings in previous tournaments and they failed to get out of their group. The team has gone through a transitional period where they have a new manager and they went from the old to new generation of players and that’s part of why Belgium don’t have any expectations on them for the EUROs, yet they can’t even beat Slovakia which puts them under pressure to win their remaining games in the group.
They don’t have any excuses if they can’t get out of the group once again because regardless of the squad that they have, Belgium have much more talent than Romania and Ukraine. I don’t know what the future holds for them after the EUROs since Kevin De Bruyne is 32 going to turn 33 very soon, Romelu Lukaku is in his 30s, we don’t know if they want to play for the national team in another major tournament, Thibaut Courtois the best goalkeeper in the world when fully healthy who played very well in the champions league final it looks like his international career is over as he fell out of favor with the manager, they’re going to have to rely on the younger players and properly replace these guys.

And now, to put things in perspective.
The one from Everton, Onana, is 22 years old, worth 60 million and wanted by some of the biggest clubs in Europe.
Mangala, 25 years old, no longer players for Nottingham forest, but for Lyon.
Faes, the CB from Leicester City, just won the Championship and will be back in the Premier League.
Debast, 20 year old CB, just made a move to Sporting CP.
Casteels was one of the top keepers in the Bundesliga for years, playing for Wolfsburg.
See how easily you can turn this around ? Yes, Belgium is a top team.
Most of these players aren't even starters. Theate, Witsel, Tielemans are/were all injured recently.
I know you're trying to downplay Belgium, but context is important.
Belgium is rebuilding. So it makes sense that some of these young players aren't known yet or haven't made big moves yet, but there's alot of talent tho.
      To name a few:
      Doku ( Mancester City )
      Onana ( Everton )
      Vermeeren ( Atletico Madrid )

Craig should be subbed by another pundit. He has really bad panel manners interrupting and talking over Kay and the other pundits. He doesn't wait to be asked, digress and babbles too much. HE IS TOTALLY UNPROFESSIONAL. ESPN FC either you rein him in or those in the know should switch to Sky.

The two most talented players of Belgium‘s golden generation retired: Mousa Dembélé and Eden Hazard. At international level you need no system players like De Bruyne, you need the natural talented players who are improving every team despite of the system/tactics. Also Belgium at their peak (2014-2018) had a much better defence than now. Kompany, Alderweireld, Vertonghen, Vermaelen and before Van Buyten too. The squad overall is much weaker now.

Next generation looks promising, and this may sound insane. But i feel like Belgium would become stronger after a complete rebuild. Right now, Belgium is slowly replacing the golden gen with young players, but if this tournament fails, a complete rebuild has to happen imo.
Yeah, i know, sounds mad. Lukaku and KDB are still only in their early 30's and still top players, but the team relies on them and it's clear that when they are having an off day, the entire team suffers.
