      Dave recently talked about trying to put another 3 albums out in the next 10 years before he calls it quits. I don't know how realistic that is, but I'm all for it. I love both bands, I just prefer Megadeth and they've made more consistently great music. The people that fell off after the RIP era really missed some gems. I love the era of 86 to 95, but I also love 04 to 10. The System Has Failed, United Abominations and Endgame are definitely some of the best of modern Megadeth, to me. And this is controversial, but I actually love Risk for being a great album. It's not a great Megadeth album, though. Does that make sense? And I like most of 13, and a few songs off Super Collider. If you took all the strongest songs off those two, it would make a great album. Really, Megadeth has put out that many albums, and none are bad albums, they just have some weak material on some.

      @user-by7vw9kv5u 6 หลายเดือนก่อน +5

      There is a lot of reasons for this.
      1. Megadeth will never make as much money as metallica touring wise. So, he kinda has too if he wants to make money.
      2. Dave is genuinely a harder worker when it comes to releasing albums. No matter the drama in his band, he realizes or is forced because of contracts to release music. Which really pays off if you are a huge megadeth fan such as myself.
      3. Realize that more doesn't mean better. Lest we forget about super collider, risk, 13, and the world needs a hero.

When he was fired from the band in 1983 he told them not to use his songs . They did anyways and they got credit for Daves work. Ride the lighting is definitely a masterpiece some even consider it their best album . Dave only wrote 2 songs for lighting album . Title track and The call of ktulu . I really like the raw and angry vibe of the original version Killing is My Business. The remastered versions really brought out Gars drums, particularly the 2018 version. The first vocals we ever hear from Dave on Loved to Death are that very primally screamed "WOAH". As many have noted before me, alot of the riffs on the album qualify for solos. The title track is just ferocious riff after riff.
    The ascending guitar solo intro to Skull Beneath the Skin is pure adrenaline. Reminds me of the musical equivalent of a hit of crack. Then that other finger tapping guitar intro to Looking Down the Cross is downright creepy and still sends chills down my spine. Never heard anything quite like that album, except for Mustaine's "psychotic" style in general on the early albums. Peace Sells certainly stepped up their game, but I still absolutely love KIMB and never forgot about it all these years later.

Metallica fired him, stole and profited from his intellectual property. Hammett walked in, had all the guitar rifts, and they recorded KEA. Mustaine is also all over RTL too, credited on 2 out of 8 songs (25%). Hidden Treasures is an EP by American thrash metal band Megadeth, released on July 18, 1995, via Capitol Records. The album features songs that originally appeared on film soundtracks and tribute albums. Four of the tracks were released as singles, and three have received Grammy Award nominations for Best Metal Performance. Despite having garnered mediocre or negative reviews, the material on the EP has been credited with helping expand the group's MTV audience in the early 1990s.... @wiki

    dude it's unbelievable to think how much work you've put into this video. I've been a fan of both these bands since around 2009/2010 so it took me 15 years to get to know their stuff. I imagine it must have been a ton of work. Very fun video to listen to. I guess the scores might have been different for anyone because of personal score, but that's kind of the point of this video. Another person can have metallica take the crown, because they might be more to their liking. On my list megadeth probably would've had more % because I'd give at least 9/10 to a couple more of their albums. I'd give dystopia at least 9/10. And that would be my score. Ultimately Your scoring is genuinely as objective as it gets, since it's music so it's you can only be so objective. Keep up the good work. I was too young in 1984 for Ride the Lightning but heard it for the first time in 1989, and it completely blew me away. This was a time when Sabbath was considered going back to the early days and that meant just 20 years ago. So even Sabbath sounded fresh. I first heard Metallica as more extreme forms of metal were also entering my awareness. I am sure for people in 1984 it was even more stunning to hear, but I would say even in 1989 that is only five years after it came out. Also a lot of the truisms about these albums that haven become really widespread over the internet, simply weren't a thing when I was in a garage metal band in the early 90s. Maybe elsewhere people were talking about this stuff, but no one ever complained about the tone on Ride the Lightning or Master of Puppets, or the mix (these were considered pretty apex production for this kind of music), and no one cared about the bass on And Justice for All Being low (I never even noticed it till it was pointed out to me). Maybe it was because we were so focused on guitars (thrash is much more guitar than bass driven). Also when I first heard Fade to Black, I had already been an Iron Maiden fan and loved the Song Children of the Damned. I felt the songs sounded a lot a like. My first impression of Fade to Black was thinking it was a cover of Children of the Damned (obviously they are different, but to my ears at the time, even though I was about a year into playing guitar) they sounded so similar
    An album I distinctly recall hearing when it came out was Rust in Peace. I think that album is harder for people now to appreciate for a number of reasons. One thing I have noticed is most modern ways of listening, don't really do it justice. There is just no comparing listening to that stuff on old school speaker systems. And it was pre-loudness wars so you didn't have to worry about the version you were listening to having all the emotion drained out. But primarily it was just this earth shattering album to hear. To this day I can't think of a more perfect metal album (and I tend to like Metallica more than Megadeth, but Rust in Peace is impeccable from beginning to end).

    Here's my take: I've been a fan of both bands for 20+ years and have had all the ups & downs and ins & outs you can expect being a fan of both groups, but at the end of the day... it's Metallica. The quantity of Megadeth albums over Metallica counts for something, sure, but what REALLY matters is how the music makes people feel and how it inspires them. Objectively, Metallica is simply more inspirational. Yes, OBJECTIVELY, Metallica is far more inspirational than Megadeth. Megadeth's influence basically stops once you leave the Halls of Heavy Metal, but Metallica's music has been re-imagined, re-interpreted, covered and performed in every damn way you can imagine. Want to hear a marching band version of Metallica? Metallica on harp? Flute? Spoons? Someone's done it. Megadeth really only connects with guitar players.
    Lyrically, James is way better at emotionally connecting to the listener. Dave sings about "cool" shit, like wars, guns, extinction and like... wizards and magic, blah blah blah. James sings about the shit going on inside you, which is why songs like Fade To Black, The God That Failed, Nothing Else Matters, The Unforgiven and even One are so compelling. Yes, One has a war-induced theme to it, but the actual message is about being trapped, helpless and wanting to die. That's what makes it truly heavy. The music is aggressive, but the lyrics is what makes it heavy... which is something Megadeth lacks. Megadeth is fast and sometimes have some pretty fancy fretwork, but they just don't feel that heavy. Even Metallica's softer moments still have a certain weight to them. To me, when it comes to Metal, HEAVY>SPEED. Megadeth has NEVER been heavier than Metallica. And we all know that Mustaine's vocals are straight up fucking trash a lot of the time. His voice is fucked, and it takes a fair amount of studio magic to make it work on record, because you hear him live and it's just like..... yikes, dude.
    Finally... the primary function of Rock/Metal bands is to play live... and once again, Metallica takes it. Metallica gives more to their fans. You go to a Metallica show and the setlist will never be the same, while Mustaine hasn't updated his setlist in like 15 years. I saw both bands this year and no question, Metallica stomps Megadeth.

      "Never been heavier"
      Post American world, bodies, blood of heroes, the chugging riff in Headcrusher. The part about lyrics is literally bias as youre just cherrypicking songs at that point. Also Mustaine HAS been kinda ass live but as you said he is playing more complicated songs

    • @Kapricorn.Musick
      @Kapricorn.Musick 7 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

      @@petarblazevic1954 I don't know man, in general, Metallica is simply heavier. Like... When you compare album to album... RTL is heavier than Peace Sells. Puppets is way heavier than SFSGSW. AJFA is heavier than RIP. Black is heavier than CTE. Load & Reload are heavier than Youth, Cryptic & Risk for sure. St. Anger is a lot heavier than TSHF. I like TSHF more than St. Anger for sure, but St. Anger is still heavier.
      As far as the lyrics, I think it's pretty obvious that James bares his soul a lot more openly than Dave. Dave writes about external topics... The things he sees in the world, but James writes more internal shit. Thoughts, feelings, etc. Mustaine couldn't dream of writing something so introspective as say The Unforgiven.

    I think “So far, So good, so what…” is a much better album than you give it credit for. Songs like “Hook in mouth” - “In my darkest hour” and “Set the world afire” are underrated bangers that can stand next to the best tracks that either of these bands have in their portfolio.
    Also, I think the bass line from “Peace Sells…” being the theme song for MTV news for a decade, should of bumped that album’s intangible rating up a bit. Literally everyone on earth bobbed their heads to that lick, wether they new it was Megadeth or not.
    Other than that… I largely agree with the work you’ve done here which was a surprise to me. I wasn’t sure that a young dude who “wasn’t there” could truly appreciate that moment of the 80’s & early 90’s, when thrash metal was a cultural force.
    Overall great work and I’m happy I invested the time to consume this content.

      Thanks for watching man! I knew it was a theme song for some MTV show but didnt realize it was MTV news and for a whole decade 🤯
      Def would have bumped it up a bit. Cheers man !

    Megadeth, in my opinion has and always will be a hungrier band with the musicianship out weighing by far..

    Now i have seen/listened to your video. We are very much alike despite 20+ years apart, we differ a wee bit on favorite songs. What would be cool though, is if you could do something similar on heavy metal/hard rock/most of the subgenres, because I am at loss for words when it comes to new heavy stuff recorded after, say, 2005. I cannot get a grip on that music. Sure, there are bands that are great, i.e. Greta van Fleet and Swedish band like Bonafide and French/Irish band Molybaron. But bands like Lamb of God, My own sin, Beyond the Black, whaaat?! Those new bands have made me search for music way back in time and/or revisiting old acquaintances like Metal Church and Sanctuary and by all means old school Chicago blues like Buddy Guy. Since there's 20+ years between us, I am sure you got a lot to say.

    • @VARVIS_
      @VARVIS_  7 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Hmmm interesting, like a video on newer metal for older metalheads? Or something different?

    • @perolsson1166
      @perolsson1166 7 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Well, that too. I am kind of searching for the missing link. Grunge, for example, came about, partly at least, when thrash, Bay Area style started to decline - like there was a craving for something new. It is difficult for old school metal to stay afloat. Like mentioned in the video, when a new record is released fans and music journalists go "meeh, mediocre" and laments on the good days have long since passed. I happen to agree to an extent, hard to keep it up without being repetitive and/or becoming a laughingstock. However, today's metal and heavy style evolves aroung growling the best and/or performance like WASP did back in the day or Iron maiden with big Eddie doll walking around on stage. Difference is, in my opinion, back then it was done as a bit of fun and it kind of suited the style, whereas today it just fall flat. Metal of today also feels engineered and without passion and technical knowhow. It seems like bands today puts together different elements and hope it sells, i.e. female and male duo, symphonics with dragons and vikings or devils worshipping. I am missing the point and above all, I miss quality.

    Generally speaking i’m down 100% with Megadeth but i like Metallica too, once in a while i kept myself listening to Ride the lighting, MOP, AJFA, Death magnetic has a dark story to me, let me tell you: i listened to the album for the first time last year, 1 week after i listened to the album one brother of my friend that we used to play videogame when we’re kids committed suicide, and okay, it was sad but, when i listened again to Death Magnetic ( and i usually listen to a full album when i’m doing my exercises) 1 week later i recieved the news that my older aunt died, after those facts (everything hapened in less that a month) i stoped to listen to this album, quite bizarre that everything happened in the same period of time that i discovered the album (and quite a name the album have 😂) but hey, great album apart my story, back to Metallica and Megadeth i simply listen to Megadeth more because it fits with my energetic personality, everytime i listen to Rust in Peace i kinda gain more energy (that’s nice because music has effects on us) and i like the more complex songwriting that Megadeth have and the lyrics too, but certainly i like Metallica too

    You added the first S&M but not the 2nd? I mean it was mostly recycled stuff from the first S&M but the new additions actually (in my opinion of course) made that 2nd S&M quiet enjoyable. Also a fan of both bands but definantly more of a die hard Metallica fan however i really enjoyed this comparison, thank you :)

    Youthanasia is my #1 fave Megadeth album. I watched your video just to see if you are aligned and you are! I also don’t know why it’s such an underrated album that no one really talk about. Production is AMAZING. All songs are great in every aspects. So I’m a weirdo just like you 😂 Oh and I know this is not part of your scoring but the album art cover is also my #1 fave, it is very creative and has great production value to match the album itself.

    2 very different bands. Sometimes I go on a Metallica binge, and sometimes Megadeth will scratch that itch when I want something total thrash. Metallica released 3 INCREDIBLE albums and have slowly faded and gotten incredibly repetitive in their songs and albums. They found a sound that worked and was amazing, but I don’t nearly listen to albums past the Black album as much as I do more recent Megadeth albums. 72 Seasons was very forgettable and sounded like the sounds they passed on for Death Magnetic. I think I listened to it once and that was it. The Sick the Dying and the dead however have some absolute bangers on it(saying that it ends with imo Megadeth worst song in Mission to Mars, which is god awful and so god damn cheeseballs,) They sound like they’ve gotten really complacent and just depend on those great 3 albums they made and a handful of their classics. Megadeth however have continued to evolve, not without some major failures of course, but as much as everyone makes fun of Dave for his revolving door of musicians, I think that keeps things fresh and gets new blood and players into the fold, changing the sound and theme of albums everytime. Yes Dave is ultimately the brainchild and main writer etc but for instance hiring Kiko made them sound the best they have in years, bringing his Brazilian classics style to the fold (see Conquer or die….holy shitballs). Metallica couldn’t do that if they tried as Kirk just isn’t a great player, especially nowadays. That guy has gotten SO complacent you can pretty much guess every solo he will play on each new song…..queue wah pedal, dive bombs and his usual licks he’s been doing since Kill em all. I personally feel that has really held Metallica back a bit as he adds nothing new to their songs or sound. Megadeth music is just so interesting to listen to as there are so many chord changes, Melodie’s and tempo changes etc, adding that Dave is a phenomenal writer and player and writes music that I doubt the Metallica guys could even play let alone conjure. Dave’s vocals do hold the band back a little but it suits the music. James has a great voice but also he does the same “HOI” “OOOHHH” and the added “yaaAAHH” at the end of every line. 2 very different bands, 2 very good bands, fantastic in their own way, but for me I always find myself going back to Megadeth musically as I appreciate the playing and writing (especially with Kiko in the mix as he’s a MONSTER) a little more than Hetfield and Ulrich. How things would’ve been if Cliff would’ve lived, as I believe they would have continued to write better stuff if he did due to his musicality and classical training. I did LOVE Metallica’s playing with a symphony tho. One of my favourites albums of theirs, but was incredibly disappointed the did a sequel to it and missed out some incredibly obvious songs to play with them (ORION, FACE TO BLACK, TO LIVE IS TO DIE ETC….) and just basically did a repeat of the first one. I love Metal and symphony music together although I’m not sure how Megadeth would sound with one behind them…..it’s be fun to try tho…..regardless, enjoy the both for what they are.
