  • This is a tour of the custom shelving and drawers I made for my contractor's truck. I built everything using only plywood and regular power & hand tools. Nothing fancy, but hopefully this will give you a few ideas for better organizing your work truck or van. Thanks for watching!

    Hello Jason I like your craftmanship I too am a carpenter and I have a pretty similar setup in my truck I have a topper and all ins and outs of tools for all different types of jobs. I also have an air compressor it's a small 5 gallon pancake compressor, but I keep mine closer to the tailgate, and I have a 75 foot hose reel for it so I too can inflate tires, work on cars, use pnuematic so on and so forth the only issue I have is to be able to bleed the water out of the air compressor that's why I keep it closer to the tailgate. I was wondering, how do you bleed yours?

    • @JasonDaniel
      @JasonDaniel  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      3260matt Nice! Sounds like a great set up! I just pull the shelf out to where I can reach the compressor, grab it and drain. Since I don’t find I have to drain it very often it hasn’t been a problem so far.

    Still watching the video, got calls I had to answer (I'm also a handyman) but I noticed when you pulled your longest top slide out, you got a good bit of sag, might want to do some reinforcing underneath the crossbrace

    Thanks for the video. When I organized my work truck, my number one priority was minimizing the amount of things I have to move in order to get something (I hate having to remove three things to get one thing). Sometimes this is unavoidable with a limited amount of space, but the more you plan the more time you save and more aggravation you avoid. I also found organizing your truck is an evolving process, so for anybody organizing their work truck for the first time, don't waste too much time trying to get it perfect right away. Just get get the basics down, and then tweek it as you go.

      Adding new or different tools has often times been the factor for me to change up my storage solutions.
      I like to keep things I access more frequently easier to get to and the lesser used items can be in the less convenient locations. Of course that's optimum but not always doable.

    • @OcRefrig
      @OcRefrig 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      yea, i'm at the organizing stage now too. trying to limit motions to get to needed tool or part. and also unpacking and packing the truck aftera big job. im getting older and wiser. trying to save aggravation like u say moving 3 things to get to one thing. really gets old when u have to do it all the time.

    Very nice set up. Couple of suggestions though for the future. One, I would put folding legs under those drawers if your going to extend them all the way. If you plan for it you can design the base to accommodate the legs. Two, I would mount the Table saw lower. Looks like a PITA to get it down. Third, I would paint and seal all the wood. That would protect it from rain and dirt. Amazing job though, lots of good ideas in there.

    Getting some ideas before I start mine, and you did some pretty cool things with your build.
    Of all the variations of things I have done or seen, I have never seen anyone rip PVC in half to secure caulking tubes, Lol
    that simple little thing really struck me a cool.
    I have a decent storage set up in a little 6x10 enclosed trailer, and I believe I am going to borrow that one from you.
    I'm getting ready to build myself some sliding drawers for my pickup because I don't always need to drag the trailer along, and I keep buying sht, so I again need more storage. lol.
    So, after 4 years is there anything that you would have done differently, as far as structurally to your bottom sets?
    Is it all still holding good? Is it still sliding well, did you think of a cool feature that you wish you had of added, but it needed to be in the design so now it's too late, but you told some guy in your comments section about it, and that son-of-a-gun did it, and probably telling his buddies that it was his idea. 💯™
    Lol.
    That upper caster catch was a good idea, I haven't seen it done like that before.
    I used to do a lot of traveling for commercial work and I mounted 3 runs of 4in (I believe) PVC pipe to the rack on top of my trailer to put 3 fishing poles in. There was some good fishing in some of those places, so those were my Sunday tools.
    I did put an OD sleeve with a cap and a little fold over latch for a master lock, to keep the honest ones honest.
    I'm thinking about putting an inverter in the trailer for the battery charger, as I just learned that the center pin on the 7-way trailer plug is a switched hot feed, for trailer accessories, but haven't looked into the amps and everything working correctly for a dual battery charger consumption, and what that takes to feed those batteries correctly, because they still cost the same as they always had, and I would hate to shorten the life with a weaker charge, although I think that between the charger and the battery, they probably just wouldn't charge at all.
    Damn I get chatty when I start thinking about these things.
    Sorry bro. Lol.

    ive been using a service truck for 38 years and found that turning those door locks was not good so, when i had my last service body made i had paddle handles installed on all the doors rather than twist handles. it's much easier on the wrists over the last 20 years. One of the Best ideas' ive ever had. i use a secondary locking system for security. just pull to open for doors and slam to close . its been a god send !

    good Vid. cool truck. how much much does she weigh ? mine weighs 8,500. My truck is going on its 4th automatic transmission in 196,000 miles. 1999 dodge ram cummins turbo diesel. i like the pvc idea for holding the caulking gun tubes. its cool how they snap in. what kind of truck is it and what kind of gas mileage do u get ? any problems with truck ? do u recommend truck ?

    • @JasonDaniel
      @JasonDaniel  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      OcRefrigeration,Hvac & Electrical. I’d say it’s right around 8-8500lbs. I had my tranny rebuilt, but I can’t imagine going through 4 transmissions. It must be a truck you don’t want to get rid of!
      This truck is a Ford F-250 with the 7.3 diesel. It’s a good running truck with lots of power.
      I guess I’d recommend different vehicles for different applications. Trucks are great when you want a lot of towing/hauling power and still need storage. A van is of course great for all the extra storage room, even though they’re not quite as heavy duty as a truck.

      Excellent video content! Apologies for butting in, I am interested in your initial thoughts. Have you thought about - Rozardner Successful Handyman Reality (probably on Google)? It is an awesome exclusive guide for how to start a handyman business minus the normal expense. Ive heard some great things about it and my friend finally got astronomical success with it.

    Great work. Thanks for sharing it with us all. I've built a lot into my van, but it's still a mess haha. I think I noticed another great feature of your build that you forgot to mention - there's a nice space above the 3 drawers for hauling sheet goods.

    Did you have slides on the lower shelves? If not, how do you keep them from sticking together when sliding the drawers in and out?

    • @JasonDaniel
      @JasonDaniel  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      ty6896 The plywood is actually smooth enough that it doesn’t stick, but I also used paraffin wax on the bottoms to make them slide even easier.

      You can put a few pieces of self stick LVT floor down and it's slick.
