It would take me about 18 hours and like $80 in tolls. That would be a nice motorcycle ride, but I would have to use my pickup truck because I know how I am. 😁
I've been working at this store for about 6 years and I'm pleased as punch with how many of my signs made it in this video! Thanks for spreading the word! Btw, if anyone is interested, all the art on the shelf at 8:13 are things I've made and willing to sell. Just make me an offer and we'll talk.
You never know what you are going to find at Axman. I bought a Swiss made needle file set that normally sells for over $100 everywhere else for $8.50. I even found a high current rotary switch that I had purchased for company that I used to work for sitting on a shelf at Axman. I know that it was the same switch because it had markings that I WROTE ON IT! The new price was $80, and I bought it at Axman for $10. Things that I have made from Axman parts: leather magazine holster, sheepskin bicycle seat cove, Lexan cover for my vacuum chamber, speaker cabinets, audio amplifiers, fiberglass leveling shims for my steel shelving. I buy carbide drill bits and other rotary cutting bits that I used to make other things. I bought several waterproof ammo cans for holding all sorts of stuff. Copper sheet, brass sheet. Aluminum enclosures. Hinges. Casters. Lots of electronic components, wir and cable. Solder. I'm 70 now and I've been buying at Axman since I was 16.
I lived in St. Paul a little over a decade ago and I went to Ax-Man all the time. I still have tools with the Ax-Man price tags on them. I loved that store. The selection of rolls of tapes alone are worth a trip.
I moved down to Austin, Texas for a little bit and one day I was working on a project. I was like, "I need a part. Better go to Ax-man.... Oh crap." We really are lucky to have them. Best store ever!
Oh man, I have a deep fondness in my heart for surplus stores. I spent a lot of time in them in my first few decades. Most of those stores are gone, but I'll have to make my way to Ax-Man...
I'm pretty sure I said this in one of your previous Ax-Man videos, but I learned how to solder by buying scrap boards, random resistors/capacitors/etc. and a soldering iron from the St. Paul Ax-Man store. I think it cost me maybe $20 total but gave me a lifetime of soldering skill.
Oh man, I haven’t been to Ax-Man in far too long! I’m going to have to take the kiddo there this weekend. He’ll love it! Such a fun experience going there and picking up random stuff.
Oh boy did you just take me back to my childhood. Soo happy to see they are still at that same location as well. I used to always spend my allowance as a kid at the ridley store. I left MN 25 years ago and often wished we had some axman stores here is california. They have surplus stores obviously but nothing I have ever seen could compare to the awesomeness that is ax man.
Massively envious you have these amazing stores. I've been to a few surplus places but nothing like the Ax-man motherlode. "If I knew more about electronics I'd be overjoyed by this massive diode" _zooms into massive resistor_ That gave me a good laugh 🤣🤣
We used to have these kinds of places here in the 80's, early 90's. But, one by one they started disappearing or getting smaller. When you find one, it's like a little gold mine. I like the signs in the place, cracks me up. Good one 👍
I grew up 20 min bike ride from the Ax-Man on university in St.Paul and it was the funnest place to go when I had a few extra bucks. I never knew what I would find, and it opened my mind to so many possibilities. I once found a broken teddy Ruxpin doll for $6 that I “fixed” to work as a ventriloquist dummy 😂. This makes me want to go visit again as an adult
Great video. I haven't been to the St. Paul store in years, but I have been to the St. Louis Park store. Such wonderful places. There used to also be a used electronics part store in downtown Minneapolis called Acme Electronics. I don't think it's there anymore but was a great place to get project supplies. Somewhere deep in the store along one of the shelves there was a little cardboard bin with a real cat in it, who sat upright, like just another part. The bin was labeled "Stinky" lol.
Thank you for the ax man video, I've been waiting for it. I missed the other location's video but will view it soon. What a great place to spend a couple hours!
I don't know much about gadgetry, electronics, doohickeys, and whatever else they have at that shop. But I love going there just to dig around and see all the weird and unique things they end up with.
Wow, best store ever. We have nothing like this here in BC, Can. There's things there you don't know you needed until you see it. I make things from junk and this is a perfect place for my hobby.
From here on out, you are cursed with only being able to upload videos that are 1 hour plus! Lol. I always look forward to your videos. While I often don't understand what you are doing, your positive attitude always brings a smile to my face and improves my day. Thank you for being you!
I've been trying not to go too long on my videos, personally I'm a little too ADHD to watch ones over 10min, but I've noticed the 20+ minute videos do OK.
@@saveitforpartsplease GOD, do NOT start making hour long videos, I’m so freaking tired of all the hour long videos. Like you I have ADHD and I don’t understand why we accept a world where TH-cam videos are as long as feature films !!!
Thank you for an excellent tour of one of the Ax-Man stores. The labels are so creative and hilarious. Makes me want to visit one, and I am pretty far away in NC. I would love to hear from some of the staff and management about what creates that amazing vibe and energy that comes out in the bins of random things.
That looks so cool, you definitely are lucky to have that store near by. I’ll have to find something like this locally. I remember as a kid back in the 90s when stores like these were very common. You definitely threw me back.
There used to be a store like that in West Duluth/Spirit Valley called Central Sales. It was a wonderful place where you could get electronic supplies to summer sausage to tires to corks to you name it. It's been gone a long time but I remember going there with my dad.
Where i grew up in Fareham UK there was a place called Techno Trade which was a lot like this. Smelled amazing (electonics, dust, coffee, bemused "customers"). In lincoln there is somewhere called Birkett's which is similar and still open. The world needs more places like this, especially my village.
Finally managed to catch up and watch this video. Absolutely loved the tour around the shop, I was fascinated by the last one you visited too, it’s great that it’s available in your area and promotes unique creativity in people. Thank you to the all the staff at Ax-Man for letting you run round bothering people and bringing us more fantastic nonsense. Excellent video Gabe, best wishes to you, your family and the feline overlords.
I grew up in Toronto, and there were a few places like Ax-Man surplus that I visited all the time. Not so much these days. I've lived in the Ottawa area now since 1983, and there were a couple, but they've been gone for many years now. So sad. You're so lucky!
Kitchener Waterloo Cambridge has a few surplus stores not quite like axman seems to be though. I've yet to make it to Cambridge surplus but I've been told it's better than kw surplus. Not that I assume that you're going to the other side of Toronto any time soon. Sayal is also very good for electronic tinkering a few locations arround the GTA. It's quite hard to find these style of stores they have no real advertising budget.
@@andrewmcewan9145 I've visited Sayal a few times when I've been in Toronto. Also A1 Parts in Etobicoke. A1 Parts is somewhat similar to Ax Man, but less "airy". A few years back he bought the inventory of Active Surplus when they went out of business. But back in the 1970s and 1980s, Yonge St and Queen St in Toronto had a number of surplus stores. It was paradise for a young nerd...
This reminds me of EPO in Houston. They're geared mainly toward electronics, but you never know what you'll find. Lots of hand written signs and tags everywhere too.
I will be traveling from the East Coast to Minneapolis for Thanksgiving this year and I’ve already added a trip to Ax-Man Surplus in St. Paul to my Friday plans. Hope they will be open!
Your very lucky to have stores like Ax Man. I live in a town of 300 people in West Texas and there's nothing out here. And I'm into electronics myself.
You're really lucky to have multiple stores like these in your area. Here in Germany (some rural part that is) it is very hard to find such stores. And if you find some, they usually sell junk with a usually very small electronics section. Maybe I get invided over to the US for Promf in 2037 just to go to Ax-Man
We used to have a Surplus Trading Store here in Benton Harbor Mich that had all kinds of stuff back in 60s we had Voice of Music companys , Clark equipment, whirlpool, BIC turntables, Heath company diy kits, Zenith computers they had stuff looked like 1940 sci fi power gauges. It’s all gone now.
Next best thing to browsing an old salvage yard in the Southwest!! Like a kid in a candy store. Near me we have The Warehouse at Shapiro. Huge but not as well sorted out as Ax-Man's though. Two electronics focused outlets dried up several years back. Loved the video.
Wow I would easily leave there with a few carts of the electronics. (ps. that was a resistor, not a diode - they do kinda look alike) Thanks for sharing this!!
Was this 10 minutes of an ad for Ax Man? Yes. Did I watch it all? Yes. Am I going to drive two hours to Ax Man tomorrow because of this? Absolutely!
I wish I lived within a two hour drive. That said a transatlantic flight still seems worth it!
Goto the St Paul Store , it has the most stuff
I might drive there from Northern California. What a cool place!
Actually goto all 3 lol , the St Paul is the largest but sometimes one store might have things the other might not.
It would take me about 18 hours and like $80 in tolls. That would be a nice motorcycle ride, but I would have to use my pickup truck because I know how I am. 😁
My favorite ever birthday present as a kid was a 20 gallon bucket full of random junk from Ax Man, I love that place.
OMG that would be a fantastic birthday present! I'm going to ask for that next year 😂
What a thought. That sounds awesome 👍

My buddy worked here years ago . The signs are the best lol
This is the kind of store you want to get baked before you go in. I used to go here in the 80's and it's most excellent.
Happy Promf everyone!!! 🎉
Slightly early on the congratulations there, but what a lovely gesture! ;-)

I went to ax-man a couple of times in 1988 when I briefly lived nearby. Nice to see it still going strong.

Great stores! As a teacher, it was a great way to get inexpensive oddities to use in your classroom. I miss the Bloomington location.
They have everything, including the kitchen sink. These kind of places are rare these days, nice to see!!
