    Bombay Dreams is a Bollywood-themed musical, with music by A. R. Rahman, lyrics by Don Black and the book by Meera Syal and Thomas Meehan, and produced by Andrew Lloyd Webber. The London production opened in 2002 and ran for two years. The musical also was produced on Broadway in 2004.
    The story centers around Akaash, a young man from the slums of Bombay who dreams of becoming the next big star in Bollywood. Fate steps in when a rich pro-bonolawyer and his fiancée, an aspiring documentary filmmaker, arrive to prevent the demolition of Akaash's slum. Akaash quickly falls in love with the lawyer's fiancée, Priya, who happens to be the daughter of a famous Bollywood director, and the ticket to the top that Akaash needs. Complications arise as Akaash faces the reality of show business, fame, his love for Priya, and his obligations to his family, friends, and his Paradise slum.

    Saw this show in New York at Broadway, and it felt Surreal, Magical and Unworldly. I hope it comes back as the story line and music is just mesmerizing!

    I was privileged to see the very last performance of this incredible musical's run when it played on Broadway in NYC. That night it seemed the cast and musicians were electrified by that fact. I was so enthralled by how spectacular was that show, that during the intermission when I happened to see the House Manager, I asked her why was such a great show closing. She said, "Look at the size of the production and the number of cast members, musicians, etc. It was booked into a theatre that was too small for it. If we don't get nearly a full house every night, we don't break even. Plus mid-America tourists' seem not to want try something they perceive as "foreign." Such a shame; even though it was produced by the great Andrew Lloyd Webber, I guess audiences couldn't get past thinking it was Bollywood-ish. Simpletons. The Manager said the cast that night was on fire!
    The exquisite melody and melancholy sentiment of this song is so powerful, that even this macho male singer starts to choke up in the repeat second verse. If you look closely, you can see just a glint of a tear in the corner of his eye and cheek and his voice almost cracks after he cries out in his loneliness in Hindi (beautifully done), he is having a hard time with the reprise and almost loses it on "heart arrives before the train" at 3:34. Would be great if they make this AR Raham musical creation into a musical.

    I love this song! I always heard it in the performance of Sarah Brightman. I didn't know it was from this musical. As someone who lives away from my home country, I feel every line of it. I always feel tears in my eyes listening to it.

    I love when he randomly breaks into Hindi! As an ethnically Indian person, here's one role they could actually give me :)

      Can you transcribe the Hindi lyrics and what they mean? I've always been curious but can't find them anywhere.

      @@K22MDL What did you think of the NYC version, compared to the London Version?

    • @K22MDL
      @K22MDL 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@michaelwilliamybarra2409 Honestly? Terrible. The London show we saw twice then flew out to NYC to see it on Broadway. It was much lower rent with dancing and singing at a much lower level of feeling and warmth. Just poorly directed and produced in comparison to the London shows. My real regret that this masterpiece in entertainment had such a short run.

    Most songs from this albums are based on some bollywood song. Can someone tell me if this one is also based on some other song, or is this a new composition?

    2:11 voice crack. Despite that, very nice performance

    • @captaincinema5066
      @captaincinema5066 6 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      The voice crack is not because the singer is in some way lacking, it is because A.R. Rahman's music is infused with so much emotion that it can bring even this macho man near to tears. The combination of this exquisite melody combined with Don Black's powerful lyrics just grab you and won't let go. Look closely at the corner of the actor's eyes during the reprise - "the heart arrives before the pain" -- he is very lucky he was able to hold it together. This is what a good song should do. Perfection.

    Wonderful score, but the story was shallow and couldn't match the emotion of the music
