WOW. This felt like sitting down with a mentor who really cares. THANK you Chris. Can’t put into words how inspiring your talk was. Not only well structured and eloquent, but so inspiring.
I am filming a documentary right now and this was so useful, 30 minutes went to so fast! You are a great storyteller. Thank you so much.
this is sooo useful! people usually ask for money before spilling these kinds of beans. Thank you Mr. Burkard!!
Agreed. Somewhere half way through the video I started feeling guilty for not paying anything for this haha
Very well spoken, informative, creative and inspiring - Thank you for words, time and experience, Chris. Cant to dive into your projects, they look and sound incredible!

Thank you Chris!! So interesting and helpful content for all creators.
The single most helpful video on documentary filmmaking I've seen on TH-cam. Thank you!
Wow, Chris. Thank you. Can't believe you talk straight for 30+ mins to us about this. Awesome tips!
Doing a documentary for as a class assignment and this is really useful. The description of the workflow itself is amazing because I tend to get stuck in the creative part more than the doing part. Using mood boards, extracting a story from re-ocurring themes and struggles, amazing vid. Really insightful
This was super inspiring. Thank you for sharing from your heart. I want to encourage you to keep on sharing - teaching - it is very useful as an inspiration.
Outstanding overview of all aspects of making a successful documentary -- including ideation, characters, key goals and techniques ideas. Thanks for sharing, this is very helpful.

I did a documentary a few years ago and I'm working on a new one starting today. I just watched a few videos like this but I must say this is absolutely the best 1 I've watched thus far. Fantastic man, you really helped! And great communication skills, you had like 0 disfluencies.
Great advice Chris. This is gold. Hoping to shoot my first documentary on an expedition later this year in Kyrgyzstan.
Thank you so much for the lessons Chris. I have learned a lot from it. And thanks for the fine presentation. It was a pleasure to listen to. Greets, Peter from Belgium, Europe.

@22:29 The shot of a Venice when he says he sometimes shoots on small mirrorless cameras lol !

Hey Maxim, Couldn't agree more!
Thank you for not having a Mic taking up 70% of the screen. Great video.
Really I appreciate all your information. And your teaching lesson. Thank you.
Glad it was helpful!
Thank you graet video!
Thank you I found this helpful and informative
Jason
Thank you, I think I know now why my documentaries are boring (not to me, but to others). Very helpful insight. My next one is going to be with your advise in mind.
amazing
Your point of projects motivated from the heart instead of money was very well articulated. If you are around home I'll bet some drone footage of the central coasts superbloom this year 2023 April shot from feet above the ground could be really cool. Carrizo Plaine, Shell Creek, Big Sur Coast, Montana de Oro. Wish I was there.
Most genuine and candid share that I can relate to from start to finish . We need more BTS of the solitary process of independent doco filmmakers.
I guess im asking randomly but does anyone know of a way to log back into an Instagram account??
I somehow forgot my account password. I appreciate any tricks you can give me!
@Edward Cason instablaster :)
@Malakai Deangelo I really appreciate your reply. I found the site thru google and im waiting for the hacking stuff now.
Looks like it's gonna take quite some time so I will reply here later when my account password hopefully is recovered.
Thank you 🙏🏽
Thank you very much
Thank you for this, just finished my first doc and what a massive learning curve. Really pleased with the result but I was shocked just how much time and effort and tbh by the end i was pretty done and fed up.
However once it was finished and uploaded I'm hooked and keep thinking about the next project.
hey man can you recommend me something how to get started for documentary style videos?
@@vonfeligs Step one: Pick something you care about.
Thank you
Thanks, Chris. So true, I thought Sasquatch was a documentary the entire first hour.
Extremely helpful!!!
Hi Maxxwell, Glad it was helpful!
Awesome video. FYI there’s an extra frame from another shot during the broll around 9:04-9:10
Great ideas for documentary filmmaking. I really want to see that film unnur now.
Us too! You can find more information about the film on Chris Burkard's website.
How convenient, I start classes again tomorrow and have a documentary class this semester.
Yey! We're glad we could help. Have a great semester and good luck with the documentary class!
Wow, this was amazing. Thank you for the terrific rundown! If you taught "live" classes or workshops, I would totally take them.
There's an UncoverDC article to teach how to make political documentaries ... Title is "Becoming a Big-Time Activist with a 20 Buck Movie Editing Program" ...
I'm curious what microphone setup you are using
At 27:45 could I ask what lens you are using on the Venice?
I pray that someday i can have a sony camera to make documentary and stories i want to make. 🙏 I have watched multiple tutorials and films to learn about filmmaking ; believing that someday i will become a filmmaker and i willmake story that is relevant and timely. 🤞 I love sony products. Typing with my Sony Xperia 🤗
where can i find under an artic sky documentary because is no longer in Netflix
what lens is on the Venice at 27:46? .... never seen anything like that before.. wierd. Like some sort of tilt shift or pinhole.. with cables hanging out of it lol
Lens baby
What camera + lenses were used to film UNNUR?
Sony venice! and ana lenses, can't remember exactl`y which ones!
Shot on ?
👍🏽
Who is this eminent guy? I want to subscribe to his channel..
Chris pls upload this to audible. The documentary content is unlistenable 😳😩🤣🙏🏾
Total respect for Chris... But the whole idea of "Documentary film" is a misnomer... Your just telling stories.
Even the very best Documentary photographers that spend months if not years on a single project know that the very fact that they, and the camera is there will change the situation...
As photographers even the way we decide how to shoot a story is changing it... Even before we get to the selection and editing stage the truth is slipping away... It's just the way it is. We tell stories, we don't document....
Its irritating, the mouth sound 😢
Boring. Talking head. Show, don't tell/
He is not a filmmaker and does not know anything about storytelling. Why not having Werner Herzog or at least someone that really knows about how to make a doc? This is just propaganda and a bad one. By the way, Sony knows how to choose bad photographers and bad filmmakers, and it fits perfectly with their really bad cameras, and lenses.
