I just finished rendering a doc and this video pops up on my feed! So many detailed and practical bits of advice that all levels of filmmakers can use. As a sound mixer my heart glowed when you talked about the importance of proximity to capturing quality audio. Keep the great vids coming!

As a guy who does cinimatography, acting, sound, lighting, and editing on he same projects, it sounds amazing to have crew members, dedicated to just one branch

I am currently in pre-production of my documentary film and I had a little creative block, but you cleared my head a bit. Thank you so much for making this video.

Excellent break down, as usual. Except at 10:37 when its recommended to forego getting a shot if it will have bad sound. *ALWAYS* get the shot if you can, even if it has bad sound-you don’t have to use the sound. It’s great to get as many shots as possible and you can always use those visuals for cut-aways and inserts if it has bad sound. OR you can collect audio separately or from audio FX services to place underneath, record ADR after, etc.

That's bending his point a bit - he's obviously talking about shots where sound is crucial, that is with people talking. And he's talking about weighing a great shot with bad sound against a usable shot with good sound when you can only get one of them (because the action will only happen once, as is often the case in documentary).

This video definitely gave some keys on documenting and filmmaking that can be used in different factions in the medium 🔥

Thank you for this video! I am about to shoot my third documentary movie and it's really helpful to listen to advice and to get inspired by new approaches to improve my skills. Having a structure is definitely something I should work on more while pre-production to make the whole process easier and less chaotic. Thanks!

What kind of spring clamps do you use with your mini ligtning lit? (That are clippednon the belt). I've seen these long ones being used in various commercial shoots by gaffers but can't find them to buy online. They should come in handy

Documentaries are harder for me than non-fiction because you can't pre-plan everything so you won't know what you have at the end. It was a journey for me, but a wonderful (and stressful) one.

I’m thinking of using a flashforward or these 10 guys about to go to the stage lie the very last minutes before the entrance. But then cut off and start a narration month back

They ARE the most used cameras in the documentary industry to be fair. TH-cam sometimes is dangerous because people are so tribal when it comes to brand loyalty instead of using the absolute best tool for the job
