Absolutely loved this video! The explanation of the tennis serve motion was clear, simple, and incredibly useful. I've been struggling to improve my serve, but your step-by-step breakdown and practical tips have made it much easier to understand. Thank you for sharing such valuable content!
Great to see you back! pushing the analysis to the extreme: why not just start with the racket in the trophy position place (on the right side with palm down) before the toss? i thought maybe this wld ruin momentum/fludidity, but many players (eg A. Roddick) have a slight pause anyways. Iga Swiatek's new serve nearly goes to that extreme (but with palm sideways and not down).
Simpiicety : Racket to the right side and about 45 degrees turn of the body . Some of my students also throw/toss the ball to early up which complicates the motion . So turn the body and near the finnish toss the ball ? Great clear video ! thanks a lot from a coach in Denmark .
Hi John, is the thinking similar to the groundstrokes the less surface area the racket covers on any stroke especially the serve the leas chance of error? Simple equals more chance of success ?
Great channel and content ( just a tiny observation, at 4.51 you say, you’re more supinated, but your palm is actually down, which technically would be termed pronated, I would have thought )
I was going to comment on the same point. The position John is coaching seems to be more of an internal rather than external rotation at the shoulder, with a relatively neutral wrist. Pronation is a description of multi-planar motion at the wrist and elbow, but is often inaccurately extended to shoulder motions when discussing the serve. John I love your insights and excellent details on so many aspects of the game, but you might consider these bio mechanical descriptor changes.
I got the problem with the racket around the head, as you mentioned. Had this wrong motion for many years. But for me to stay at the right side, and everything will follow naturally right dont work. I need more clear information to get in the right racket drop......
Great video Concise straight to the point - And the point is to simplify the take back Let’s face it serves like Sampras / Fed are not reachable even by pro players, and utopia land for club players. So the solution is to simplify.
Another great video on an aspect of the serve I have not seen covered often
Much appreciated!
This really cleared things up for me, put the pieces in place, and helped me to understand. Thank you.
I'm so glad!

Thank you for this video. I always knew I had a problem with getting to the trophy position but could never put it into words.

Thank you :)
So good!!
Thanks. Just what I’ve been wondering about
for me the most important point was, I have to find the same point with the rac,if I would throw a ball without the rac, thanks!
Thanks for the feedback and contribution to the lesson! Kindly, John

A coach suggested abbreviating my serve as well and I got more consistent and effortless power. It does provide advantages
MANY THANKS
important ex.: styles of serves; new styles and indivuals styels explainded; where I have to be befor download my arm, thanks
Fantastic
let's address a second part please.. Should a players be looking under or over the tossing arm when ready to push up to the ball
You should look over the toss arm to see the ball when tossed...Best, John

dominant eye influence, stance, ball contact point (for forehand and backhand too), launch of the ball more or less forward during the serve....
Great video

The serve is a throwing motion with an UPWARD direction
Yes it is!
