I lived in the upstairs apartment of a building, right beside the railroad tracks, almost identical to this. Absolutely loved it. I now have an 1880’S shotgun in New Orleans, a beautiful home, filled with all the antiques I’ve collected all my life. It’s a wonderful lifestyle design, albeit not for all people. Good luck with everything. Happy New Year 🎊

Not sure why YT suggested this video but I do enjoy watching old buildings brought back to life. This one looks like a big project with tons of potential. It's going to take a lot of time, patients, resources and especially back breaking effort. I don't know much about Ms Emma but I am excited to watch the progress and wish her the best of luck. If this makes its way to the end she will have so much to be proud of as this wont be easy. Im pulling for you kid

I lost my wife of 43 years in September of '23. I know too well the loss of the whole structure of your life. There is a huge hole in your existence that eventually appears smaller as if backing away from a window.
Do not deny yourself grief, but find ways to focus that energy into something creative.
    Like restoring and old store.
    Cheers

I'm so sorry about your loss. Losing a mom hits a daughter hard. I was 49 and 1 day old when I lost my Mom. I had grown children and I still cry and want my Mom when I'm sick, very happy or at a loss of what to do. I'll be 61 in a couple of weeks and I still want to call her. I've said it's a new normal that you get when you lose a parent but honestly it just sucks.

Also when you're kicking up that 80 yr old dust there can be anything from asbestos to rodent droppings that you don't want to inhale. Having fresh air coming in will help clear it out. I usually wear a respirator at least until it's pretty swept out.

Hi Emma, a hint regarding shovels…a shovel with a pointy end is used for digging holes down into the ground. A shovel with a flat end (like you used to dig into dump pile in back) is called a transfer shovel and is generally used to move a pile of rocks or dirt. The flat end scrapes flat along the ground to get under whatever you are moving. So, I think a pointy shovel might be better to use in that area. Congratulations on finding that bottle! This looks like a fun project!

    • @dcimedic

Just a thought for you, in many communities there are people that are happy to lend a helping hand if you ask…. try asking around to see if anyone has a small tractor or excavator that could do some clearing for you around the back yard and out building. It would go quickly and give you better access to those areas. It’s absolutely worth a couple hundred dollars. Those abandoned properties are so quickly taken over by nature it’s crazy 😣

This property reminds me of one I read about in our local paper in Oakland. A guy had bought an old 1930s building in the industrial part of town. It was 3 stories with the ground floor being a warehouse which the new owner converted into his garage & workshop. Floors 2 & 3 were living spaces & on the roof he had built a nice garden & patio. It was quite a cool residence and secure too as he had sealed up all the windows and walk in doorway on the ground floor leaving only the big heavy iron rollup door which he would open with a remote to drive in & close it behind him. So cool.

We went through an old store and found dollar bills stuck in their old counter checks. If you don't know what those are back in the day, you could go in the store and write your account # on the check and use the stores counter check if you were short of cash. They kept them sitting on the counter, and usually, it was the only bank in town.

FIRST clear the trees and brush out of the way--THEN put up a fence. Stuff will be out of the way by then. Get a chain saw and even a backhoe and clear off the back lot completely----Then put up the fence. it would also help you dig up the mound so you'll know what you are dealing with. Got any guy friends who can work a backhoe if you rent one? But also put the fence up along the property line, not just any random place.

Beautiful old store! Personally, I would keep the old doors and restore them along with the woodstove. In the old bricks that have the manufacturer or location on them can be worth money. I have built frames for pictures, but found the easier way is to go to a thrift store and find a frame. This is my first time watching and I’m looking forward to the Restoration or transformation. The emblem on the glass bottle was Anhauser Busch and screw off caps came about in the early 70s so it's vintage.

You never stop missing your mom. At least I don't. Go to Tractor Supply, buy a post driver, please. Or maybe your dad has one? You pounding on those posts with that dinky hammer is killing me. I think you can still buy bud in quarts. Is that a wood stove with the ladder leaning against it? If so, it's a cool one that deserves to be cleaned up and used. Keep at it sweetie.
    Best regards from Indiana.

I think the cream colored "mug" with the blue imprint is a shaving soap mug. My husbands grandfather had on just like that with a shaving soap bush with it. I don't know for sure, but it looks very similar.

What a great old mercantile building was it grocery/bank/assay office or more of a stock and station type operation. I mean originally not whatever it became before it was closed and sold.

That was an old Anheuser-Busch bottle probably from the 1970s. Cool find. I think you would be surprised at what might be buried there.

The garbage you found outside is a typical burn pit used in the country to discard trash, back before the trucks ran out that far. After you clean out the unwanted you would probably need to a structure inspection to make sure the roof is good, and the building is worth putting money into. Nostalgia is a good thing in everything but real estate, no matter what you do to a commercial property the value is mostly in its location and traffic. So be wise in your choice of use. If you were near me, I could help you now that I am retired but I am sure you have a support channel to lean on. Stick to it you will have fun.

The mug I believe is a shaving mug it would hold a round bar of shaving soap and there would be a brush that came with it
