I have the same TT but don't know a thing about it. Need guidance in trying to run it again. For starters the belt seems to have been lost. And don't know how to connect it with modern day speakers Please let me know if someone can help me rebuild the 242 and relive the experience.
Try getting a magnetic cartridge for such a nice turntable. Whats the point of playing a great tuntable like that with a sub standard ceramic cartridge that needs a great weight on the arm?
D Roy Philips GA 242. Is this a great turntable? I do not know very much about turntables. Does this model have 3 speeds including 78 rpm? Is this a valve model or a modern transistor model? Regarding the cartridges, is it all okay to use a magnetic cartridge to play old gramophone records? Sorry for the late comment.
@@janath9118 NOT a great turntable to be honest. But better than pulley drive HMV😁. It's a belt drive but the speed isn't very consistent. If you're not an audiophile, it's ok to own and use it. It doesn't have 78. Only 33 and 45. If you need 78 on it, you need to design your own circuit. I think it has germanium transistor inside for the speed control. Some years ago I had uploaded its manual online. Search it. You'll find it in archive.org. A magnetic cartridge of around 6 gm would work. Don't be sorry. Always happy to help. Check out my TH-cam channel. I tried different cartridges on 242 and uploaded some videos. Edit- Besides the issue of inconsistent speed, it picks up a bit of hum from the transformer since it isn't shielded. I can hear it as my amplifier is top class. It CAN BE made a great turntable if you do some work and upgrade the parts. That's what I'll do.
@@janath9118 Use ONLY MAGNETIC AND IRON AND MOVING COIL CARTRIDGES PLEASE. DO NOT USE CERAMIC CARTRIDGES IF YOU WANT TO PRESERVE YOUR RECORDS. I used the same ceramic cartridge the owner of this video uses and destroyed several fantastic records. Now since I use magnetic, my later collection is pristine.

I like to mention here that i am having a Pioneer model PL- 15 D belt drive turntable of the 70's with S arm and PC 30 magnet type cartridge. I like turntables and listening to records but i do not have an expert knowledge about them. Although you listened to this video using your good amplifier, i listened to it on phone or laptop. So i cannot hear any hum in it. Again thank you very much for your valuable advice here regarding the turntable, cartridges and records!
The Turntable is electronic control circuit for motor start and stop. If you are conversant with electronic circuits then there are potentiometers to adjust below.
