- "Der König in Thule" ("The King in Thule") is a German poem by Johann Wolfgang von Goethe, written in 1774.
Goethe wrote the poem "Geistesgruß" as a precursor of "Der König in Thule", while he was travelling to Lahneck Castle on the river Lahn in July 1774. Under Herder's influence, the setting was changed to the mythical island kingdom Thule, which was thought to be the northernmost place Greek seafarers ventured in antiquity.
Goethe used it later in his tragedy Faust (part I, lines 2759-82) as Gretchen's (Margaret) introduction. It has been set to music by a number of composers, notably Franz Schubert.

Es war ein König in Thule,
Gar treu bis an das Grab,
Dem sterbend seine Buhle
einen goldnen Becher gab.
Es ging ihm nichts darüber,
Er leert' ihn jeden Schmaus;
Die Augen gingen ihm über,
So oft er trank daraus.
Und als er kam zu sterben,
Zählt' er seine Städt' im Reich,
Gönnt' alles seinen Erben,
Den Becher nicht zugleich.
Er saß beim Königsmahle,
Die Ritter um ihn her,
Auf hohem Vätersaale,
Dort auf dem Schloß am Meer.
Dort stand der alte Zecher,
Trank letzte Lebensglut,
Und warf den heiligen Becher
Hinunter in die Flut.
Er sah ihn stürzen, trinken
Und sinken tief ins Meer,
die Augen täten ihm sinken,
Trank nie einen Tropfen mehr.

I think there's no language with more poetical power than the german language. It's because it can represent deep meanings with few words. And also, because the case system makes possible the inversion of the sentence order without disturbing the meaning, and so a german has a greater lexicon of poetical possibilites than any other language's poet. This poem by Goethe is just an additional prove of this.
True
it is indeed so. I once translated a Bob Dylan song a a school project and not only was it the best in class but it was called "better than the original" - and I did that within an hour
It´s Goehte even give Mozart a try! I do´n´t like Mozart as well but this is awesome. th-cam.com/video/36Y_ztEW1NE/w-d-xo.html. i love it and google why!
Faust, a masterpiece created by a universal genius, Goethe.
Nietzsche said of Goethe "the exceptional German for which music worthy of him has not yet been found!"
You should upload the final chorus of Mahler 8th Symphony, the closest thing to music worthy of Goethe.

I love this song, it sounds so magical
Yes, and it also has a feeling of deep sadness to it, the sadness of one whose love becomes lost in a magical dream.

This is so beautiful... German language is so angelic. Thank you for translating!
it's so nice to hear this 😊 I mostly hear that German is ugly. once someone told me that " the Witcher" shouldn't have been dubbed in German because it's such an awful language and that Germans don't deserve such a great game. well. as a German it's nice to hear that there are people who actually like the language
@@finn9497 Really? This is awful :( I hear people saying that german sounds angry and all that, but to me it is truly an angelic language that I can listen to someone speak for hours... It's also a very fun language to learn! Speaking/hearing it is satisfying... somehow? Idk. There's something about german that is so calming

This is just absolutely beautiful man

Greetings from Alaska! And from kin in Minnesota and Wisconsin!
My family came from Germany to Wisconsin during the Prussian times.
I just moved to Palmer-Wasilla area in Alaska.
@@edw2029 Ha! Welcome kinsman! My family came from Dresden and moved to Black River Falls Wisconsin before the Nazis rose to power.
The winters are too long! Spring and Autumn are near nonexistent! There's no shortage of thieves! And the animal you should be most afraid of around here is moose!
Other than that, the summers are wonderful and there's plenty to do. Alaska has some of the most beautiful scenery in the world and federal laws are more of a suggestion! I can't see myself leaving.
We've got more pot shops and liquor stores than we've got churches. If you're looking for a woman? Head to the Target Mall where the ratio is ten women to one man and they're already looking for stuff they don't need.
And no matter where you are in The Last Frontier, you'll find good honorable people. I hope you enjoy The State Fair and The Scottish Highland Games (if they're open this year).

It’s definitely one of the most beautiful ballads I’ve heard.

Greetings from Greece. Could you please tell me the artist who sings and what instrument he is using?
It's called "Lute guitar" in English or "German lute" (in German: "Laute" ), they used to pluck and play this string instrument. Regarding the artist i don't know, but you also find a nice version of the song "König von Thule" sung by a group named Faun. Xairetismous apo tin Elbetia

Perhaps the golden goblet represents the soul or life force energy of the human being, drinking from the goblet represents the depletion of the life force through certain acts, leading to the death of the soul??
The realm itself has lost its soul. Nothing remains but what is of this earth.

C'era in Tule un re che tenne
sino al cenere la fé.
La sua amante a morir venne
ed un nappo d'or gli diè.
Nulla caro ebbe mai tanto,
vi beveva (1) a mensa ognor
e in votarlo avea di pianto
gli occhi carichi (2) e d'amor.
Quand'eì pure venne a morte
numerò le sue città
all'erede le diè in sorte,
ma il nappo d'or non già.
Nella sala dell'avito
suo castello in riva al mar
fece a splendido convito
i baroni radunar.
Svanir vide la gioconda
vita il vecchio bevitor
ed infine giù nell'onda (3)
gettò il sacro nappo d'or.
Ir giù il vide e le tranquille
acque rompere e sparir
s'oscurar le sue pupille più
non bevve il vecchio sir
Could somebody explain me why the phrase "Es ging ihm nichts darüber" was translated by "Nothing was more precious to him"?
Nothing stands/ goes (in value) above it. That's what he means.
