I took the Canon 100-500mm RF out into the Real World to the Renaissance Faire to see how it handled on the Canon EOS R6. It will handle just the same on the EOS R5 as well. This is a PERFECT Mega Zoom lens for wildlife and nature photos and anything outside....but it will come at a price...$2,699!!! I still think it's worth it for those who need it.

The smooth/tight ring is great for shooting birds that are above you in trees. It keeps the lens from creeping backwards when you want to be zoomed out.
The manual focus ring is great for video shooting.

I burned holes in my credits cards to pick up at Canon R6 and this RF 100-500mm L lens. I am glad I did! Awesome combination and what I have wanted for years. My 5D iv and 100-400mm L were great but this is just stellar.

Hi Rudy, could you put a percentage figure on keeper rates between the 5D4 and the R6 in the same BIF situation. Im guess the 100-400 was the mk2. So no regrets ?? Whats easier crop 30mp photos to 500mm or use a 20mp with a 500mm lens. Im looking at the same setup but a little nervous about the low pix count compared the the 30 I have now with my 100-400mk2 and the 1.4ex lll extender.

@@tekguyphoto Hi and good question. I haven't really done the keeper comparison yet, but with the R6 at 20fps and the eye focus with my wildlife shots there is just soooo much more. I did notice a slightly lower quality but I am very pleased. I still have my 5Div and use that for landscape shots. Still have the 100-400mm mk2 (and extenders) and will likely sell to recoup some on the $$$ spent of the new gear....and to free up space...my wife and kid are starting to say I go tooooo much! hahah!

@@tekguyphoto I’ve never seen any complaints about the 1Dxiii same 20 mp. The image quality from the R6 is superb, I’ve used it with the 100-400 L ii. I’ve never used the RF 100-500 but all comparisons I’ve seen v the 100-400ii all say the RF lens is even sharper, which must make it incredible. I saw one review about the RF 100-500 a few days ago from a pro photographer saying that this lens from 100-200 is as sharp as any of his primes. He said 200 is the sweet spot. Although there probably won’t be many times I use it at 200mm the point is the quality. I’m getting his lens at the weekend and I can’t wait. Hence I’m obsessed with watching reviews!

Jared I have watched a lot of videos concerning the R5, R6, and RF lens reviews. I rented the R6 and lense adapter, was totally blown away with its performance with EF glass. I have not seen a single review on the crop capabilities of these two cameras on any type of glass. I would like to see a review of the pro’s and con’s of using the built in crop factor of these camera’s with various glass. Take the RF 100-500, it would become a 112-800mm using the 1.6x crop. Much cheaper than going and buying a 1.4x extender at 500. I personally played with this feature on a stationary subject. Both photos looked outstanding, of course the cropped factor appeared closer and when I cropped the full frame photo to the same approximate size I lost some sharpness. The thing that blew my mind was the ISO, aperture, and shutter speeds were identical for both photos!

    • @kogrady2409
      @kogrady2409 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

I’m sure it’s a terrific lens. I haven’t switched to an R camera yet, but I’m happy to know that Canon’s EF-R adapters would allow me to use my favorite long zoom, a Sigma 150-600mm Contemporary lens with an EF mount, with an R camera. I’d love to know how the new Canon lens compares to the Sigmas (including the newer 60-600 version). One Sigma advantage is its lens lock - no creep!

Having reviewed all of Fro's long zoom reviews of RF glass, it appears the solution under $3k for the sports field shooter is the EF versions of 70-200 or 100-400 given ) very good AF performance on the R series bodies, 2) optical quality, 3) greater ability to blow out backgrounds, and 4) option to add a TC to the 70-200s for more reach , which the 70-200 RFs can't do. Fair assessment?

Given the basil kit lens with EOS R 5/6 is the 24-105, then you take the 100-500 and you get the full range from 24 to 500mm focal lenght with just two lenses, wich makes it unusual since usialy it is more 100-400 and 150-500, despite there was a 50-500mm lens niknamed sigmonster because it was especially big and heavy. Plus a large aperture/fast prime and you got your trinity going up to supertele instead of placing the usual 70-200 as the tele! Of course, if you want F2.8 aperture you may still need the 70-200, but still it gives quite a range.

    1. You haven't seen the smoothness-ring for the zoom-ring on other lenses? Remember the EF 100-400 mk 1? It has it ;)
    2. The need for tightnings the zoom-ring? Maybe to deal with the lens-creep? :)

thanks for this basic review. I liked it. Since I'm still a photography-greenhorn, I have to check if there are reviews of comparable lenses from other manufacturers. I would rather get warm to an all-rounder. A well-deserved thumb for this review!

Hi Jared, Videotime 3:36 => On the Canon EF 35-350mm - F3.5-5.6 , there was already the same system ring "smooth-tighten". This was introduced around 1992...
Super telephoto zoom lens with a 10x zoom ratio! High image quality is maintained. Ideal for sports and documentary photography when you need to change the framing often. The zoom adjustment ring lets you adjust the zoom torque to your liking.

So this has absolutely nothing to do with this lens at all, but just wondering if there was a mirrorless camera you'd suggest for low light city photography? I'm looking at things like the X-T3, Nikon Z6 II, Sony A7iii, etc. What would you suggest? Mirrorless is a must.

Lens collar is required to shoot sports.. if you have tried shooting something like a cricket match that goes on for 6-7 hrs you will eventually need a support as you can't be using the lens hand held for that long.

In this video, and other videos that you have done, you make a point to make sure that you switch from animal eye AF to people eye AF depending on the situation. Canon does offer the option of “no priority”, instead of people or animal, it doesn’t seem that anyone has tested out this mode (I believe there are a couple of other R5 or R6 videos floating around TH-cam…). I wonder if you have it set to no priority, it would detect both people and animals alike and then you wouldn’t have to be so concerned when you are in the eye AF tracking mode.

The 100-400 has the Smooth-Tighten thing to. Very handy! It is for the thing you seconds before shown, so that the lens doesn't move out of it's own in zooming stuff.
Also, I do use the MF function sometimes, because when the subject is far away and fast as hell and you don't have the fast camera focussing you need and/or even worse it's dark, or you are a bit inexperienced (even after 10 year, I am still a noob, yes I suck). It can just be that moment you can sharpen the picture to your own liking, or just do have that shot you've wanted instead of missing it.
Oh and a filter, I've bought, because of the protecting. You have L-lens gear, not something you can buy yet again. So any extra protection you gonna get is one. Also, I've shoot with the lens sometimes in conditions where the lens can get dirty, so not needing to have to clean the lens professionally but just get the uv-filter out of the way, helps a lot xD
Though both are me being noob more, then actually making sence. I just wanted to explain why someone would use it even if it feels/looks/is weird to do so.
