This was fantastic. Clear, concise & easily-digestible. I love doing all my own guitar work. Really enjoyed your video. I had-to, Hit that Like-button. Happy Holidays from NYC
I used to use this method - its tough to beat. Now I also use a quarter round file and a concave half round crowning file to get hemispherical fret ends. I've also found a Dremel with rubbing compound on a polishing wheel beats fret erasers for speed, ease, and most importantly - results.
I use the stewmac wheel buffers for the dremel and love them. I started using those about 3 months after this video. I still like the method with this file personally.
@@travisbernard5315 Yeah, I just got the quarter round file. Only done one neck so far. Definitely took a while. might be worth it though. What you're doing now is definitely the next best option. Of course, we should be making our own necks, with CNC micro-routed fret slots that don't go to the edge, frets with the tangs nipped off the ends, and the ends ground hemispherical with a concave cup drill grinder. But that's a lot of work! .
@@normbarrows I do make my own necks, I just didn't have one at the time of this video :/ Fret work is always one of my least favorite things, but when done properly really makes the guitar feel like $1,000,000,000
I agree, our newer videos have it quieter and hopefully less distracting...very much a learning curve for me yet :) I will/should be posting more and more! If you are ever looking for a video tutorial on something else, let me know and if I have a project involving that I will do my best to get that video out there!
Not what I was looking for, I need to know how much radius should be on the fret, I bought a Chinese neck, 8ts nice but had unlevel frets, so I dressed them, no rocking now, so I used a fret dressing file to round the frets, they are not totally round tho, is that ok ?
radius of the fret should match the radius of the fret board. This can be done with a radius black used for sanding fretboards very easily, but go slowly and take your time, then you will need to crown and polish the frets.
May be this has nothing to do with playability but I didn't like this method and the way it looks like a scalloped fingerboard. I think rolling could be done more precise with a blade and then sanded to desired smoothness.
I agree and disagree. If you are doing 1-2 guitars and not doing it again that is usually fine. My stew Mac file has lasted 5 years and well over 100 guitars. Also it works immensely better with stainless steel frets also.
@@travisbernard5315 Totally agree, but for a user (not a luthier) it is a very good solution. I have used it on my 3 guitars, using only 1 set, they were very smooth. Regards!
I can't say in words how annoying and distracting the background music is on this video. I can only make a sound of utter despair, like uuaargggh, or the like. And now I'm leaving without watching any more.

Glad it was helpful!
Thank you! A great instruction that is easy to understand!
Thanks for the kind words!
Nice work dude.

Nice closeups!

A tip, if you want to do the same and spend almost nothing. Buy a set of nail files. It works perfect without investing in a thousand tools.
