    This is a video of the path the water takes to cool a outboard engine. A lot of outboard engine run hot. I hope this will show what to look for to fix the problem. The water flow on a outboard is very important to the life of the engine.

    Wow! I broke down on the lake 6 miles from the ramp with the wind at my back. I had to be towed in by 3 guys in a 24ft fishing boat. I diagnosed the charge coil and when I finally got the flywheel off my 1986 30 HP Evinrude the dreadful black ooze was there. Parts on order I suspected the thermostat and discovered the clogged up water jacket on the head. Now I see I have another water jacket I need to remove and clean out physically. Thank you so much for the video and explicit information. I may try to use "Rydlyme" if I can figure out how to do it. LOL Leg off and thermostat out and get another gasket for the head water jacket. Thanks again for a great video.

      I have the exhaust cover off. Thoughts? I should also re-verify that my water tube is properly aligned.

    Thank you sir, very informative. I have a 2002 2 stroke 90hp Yamaha that isn't moving as much water as I think it should. I know it was primarily used in saltwater and very shallow saltwater at that. It was flushed every time with fresh water, but I think it needs to be de-scaled. Your video helped me to understand what's going on in my motor. I'll remove the t-stat and pump impeller and set it up for a continual flush of a de-scaler to see if I can't clean out a lot of those deposits. Thanks again.

      It made a huge difference. My tattletale was barely dribbling even after I put in a new water pump. I flushed her for about 6 hours using a mixture of Simple Green Lime Descaler and water. After I dropped the lower unit, I rigged up a cheap fountain pump in a big wash tub and set it under the outboard. I hooked the output of the fountain pump to pipe that the water pump connects to using clear plastic 1/2 ID tubing. When I powered the pump up it forced this mixture through the whole water jacket and back out the bottom of the motor. The wash tub caught it all and just kept it recirculating. There was a ton of crap in the bottom of the wash tub when I got done. BUT, the proof was how she peed when I was done. Before there was barely a dribble out of the tattletale, now, she flows like I would expect. I actually have videos of before and after the flush. Just no way to attach them to this reply.
      I put in a new thermostat after I was done flushing the motor.
      Thanks again for the video and the inspiration, though to be fair, I think regular old vinegar would have been just as effective as a flush media and a lot cheaper than the Simple Green. Just wouldn't have smelled as good.

    Great video, it steer my suspicions toward the exhaust cover and it's gaskets. My Chrysler 15hp was overheating and water from the back of the motor stopped flowing with increase of rpms. The gases from exhaust pushed cooling water from the passages because of blown gaskets. Some people suggested that it's caused by new water pump impeller which had less fingers(six) versus old ones having ten but I thing it's bad gaskets

    That has been one of my bench projects for a while that has`nt got going yet. waterpump went out on river but did`nt seem to overheat badly , So I took it home and when I opened it up it still had pressure in the lower unit and new oil. but when I changed the water pump out and started it it went and filled the lower unit with water and gases , but the lower still held pressure for over 24 hrs. now I need to teardown an find the reason for this , This was my favorite motor ran like a brandnew motor and had the lighting and charging coil in it and the main reason I wanted it it was one of the models that by changing a part it would jump from 6 hp 8 hp. But alas it may never get done.

I initially got water out of the telltale then started it again and no water. Changed the impeller still no water, pulled the pipe plug out of the water jacket at the head lots of water came out. Checked the telltale hose no blockages. I suspect the blockage to be in water jacket somewhere near the telltale outlet? Any thought’s? Thanks

    • @OmFishing
      @OmFishing  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      I didn't think this one look to bad. 95% of its life has been used in salt water.

    • @Texcajun06
      @Texcajun06 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Here's what gets me, salt is highly soluble in fresh water. A simple flush of fresh water after you've been in the salt water should dissolve all of the salt in your motor. You ever taste the water coming out of your pisser while you are flushing with fresh water? It's as fresh as the water going in.
      I think what most guys are seeing when they tear into their saltwater motors is lime, sand, shells and other mineral deposits. I recently flushed my motor using a fountain pump and a lime descaler. It knocked a lot of stuff out of my motor and made a huge difference in the amount of water that came out of the pisser. Pretty sure vinegar on a continuous flush would do the same thing.

    Thanks for the information. The water is always coming out my telltale drain cold. I thought there might be something wrong with my thermostat but your video indicates that the drain is before the thermostat and not after. Is there a way to check if my 1987 Johnson outboard model # j20cro is running at proper temperature? I am running in a cold fresh water (lake superior). I am able to put my hand on the engine block and it only feels warm even after a couple hours of run time. I have checked after high speeds with little change. I do a lot of trolling speeds(2 mph).

    • @OmFishing
      @OmFishing  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The water coming out of the tell tale drain after running for a while should at least be a little warm. If that was my engine I would ether check the thermostat or replace it. Proper engine operating temperature the engine burns fuel and runs better. You can get build up on the in side of the engine running it to cold. They do make a Thermomelt stik that heat sensitive marker that melts on contact with a surface of a specific temperature. You put that on the top cyclinder head. Your inlet water temperature has to be around 70. Some people will take a digital pyrometer and check the head temperature after a test run of 3000 rpm for five minutes. The temperature should be around 140. There are different test for different temperature. That is a lot of testing for hot spots. So to answer your question ether take your thermostat out and check to see if it is opening and closing or just replace it. Stay Safe.

    • @OmFishing

      When you say that no water. do you mean that at the end of the hose or at the block? If it is at the block the water is not getting there. I would check that the tube is in the right place. When you put the lower unit back on did you put the water tube in the upper port first and then line up the bottom, I do it the other way most of the time. I have be told that you take the chance of missing the top port with the tube putting the bottom in first then trying to line up the top. Their is no easy answer but to retrace you steps.

      I think the water jacket gasket could let some water back through the exhaust port. I don't think it would when it is running, but after it was shut off. When I removed mine it look the same way. Like it was penetrated with salt or something. Let me know how it runs for you when your done. Stay Healthy.

    This videos is very informative thank you… I’ll check all that out little by little… I have a 90 suzuki dt30c no water from tale tell.. I changed the impeller and made sure the pick up tube is connected I get water for 20 seconds then it stops and feels like exhaust is coming out.. I removed the thermostat and ran in a bucket and it can run like that 10 minutes no problem weather gushing from take tell and thermostat housing.. as soon as I put the thermostat on it’s stops.. also with the water that gushes out the thermostat housing I can see exhaust fumes.. idk what else it can be maybe the head gasket? I checked for compression and getting 125 on all cylinders.. also took out the lower end and put water up the tube and the tale tell works fine.. is as if exhaust is mixing in the cooling system and not allowing water to make it up the head… any advice please

    Hello, I have an older 2 stroke 5HP merc Mariner outboard. The water coming out of the small tube on the back the engine was not a great stream. I squeezed the tube to see if it was clogged and it came out. Now the engine produces strong stream directly from the hole, but it is basically cool water, like no temp what so ever. Is that bad to be pushing that much water through the engine? If I block the hole partial with my finger the water temp increases. Should I be concerned and n ot run the engine

    • @OmFishing
      @OmFishing  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      I would not be to concerned about to much water. Most problems come from over heating. My engine has a thermostat in side to keep it at operating temperature I did look at the break down of a 5hp merc I did not see a thermostat on the break down I was looking at. I think it would be better to run a little cool than to hot.

    I have a 1972 Mercury 650E 3 cyl. I have a water oil whitish foamy liquid coming out the upper starboard engine mount. I removed the power head and exhaust plate from the middle section drive shaft housing. There was only a little water near the engine mount. I have a few questions. Is it normal to have water below the exhaust plate? Where does the cooling water get expelled from the power head? Does the water drain down around the exhaust tube down and through the prop? Today I plan to remove the exhaust plate to make sure that the gasket is not leaking water to below the exhaust plate and onto the engine mount. I plan to replace the upper engine mounts or packing U cup if the mounts look OK or both. Is it normal to have some water mix with exhaust causing the whitish foam to come out somewhere? I also plan to replace the water pump impeller since I found a few bits of rubber in the port just below the elbow pee vent on the port side of the engine. Your guidance and comments are greatly appreciated.

      I would need the model and year and know what hole the water is coming out of to help you my friend. It could be just leaking when the thermostat is opening. The exhaust cover has a hole in the top with a elbow and a hose. That is the overboard indicator. Water will run from there.

    The water jackets always fill the engine unlike how youre tellinh it. The thernostat doesnt stop water entering the cylinder jackets it stops circulation. What you saw on the cylinders wasnt blowby as you claimed its just hot exhaust gases that get pushed out of the engine that the side of the cylinder is exposed to as they are expelled.

    Hi buddy ! really like the videos . I just got a 1985 9.9 evinrude electric start . The tell tale drips kind of alot but not a stream and it doesnt blow mist out of the rear exhaust hole . It has seen saltwater . I am going to check the THE THERMOSTAT it seems like the cooling system is dirty since I put it in my test tank that was clean and it has dirtied it up since I put it in the other day . I have started it 5-7 times and run it a bit hoping the system may clean out and then stop it after it gets hot . Going to buy a new themostat and I need a gasket I guess , is that the head gasket ? Am thinking about taking it out and running it without one to flush the system then putting new one in . Also is it possible my tell tale elbow could be clogged ? the elbow is covered in black dryed goup and has a white fabric underneath . Thhinking I should remove and inspect the elbow for blockage Also starts without choke but if choke is applied will not start . Has new plugs and supposedly a new impeller

      I don't know that I have ever seen a time on that but, remember that the rubber impeller is spinning in the impeller housing. That is way they say lightly grease the impeller cup. I am sure the grease is gone after the first time out on the lake. I try to have a good supply of water going to the motor before I start it. I am like you we know that the impeller is spinning and getting hot. In a short time it will be trashed. The last motor I worked on it would not suck water out of the tank but It would if I primed it with the muffs. Than it would start pumping out of the tank. I would say no more than ten seconds be fore shutting the motor off. I would make sure the water is higher than the pump or use the muffs and see how it does. Let us know how you make out with this. Stay safe!!

    Gotta clean the piston /ring grooves out, the rings are stuck from excessive carbon deposit buildup inside the piston ring grooves. ( Note at 4:30 the rings aren't wiggling up &down a teeny bit w/hardly any play inside the grooves of the pistons, while hand cranking it, jerking back' n' forth or if you push each of the 3 rings with a small screw driver carefully to check if the rings are loose springing in and out of each grooves without any sticking going on). Well thats why the cylinders gonna be thrashed if You keep running it like that resulting in loss of compression. Might as well tear it apart and clean it up, replace seals, bearings all that. Then it ll be fresh again
