    This video was extremely helpful for me to find and fix the exact same problem on a 45. A couple of pieces of the old broken water pump impeller was stuck inside the exact same port as your 50 hp. Thank you for showing me this before I pulled the power head. Great video!

    Thank you for your video, I am about to tackle the same issue on an old 350 Mercury outboard. I find frozen bolts in alloy castings can be shocked with a drift punch or a Philip screwdriver to help the penetrating oil to work. Best penetrant is Kroil, thanks again.

    Very nicely done! Rule of thumb...if the dirt dobber don't fill it... it's gotta be internal.

    I had the same problem on my 88 classic fifty except for the piece was in the water jacket underneath the power head between the exhaust plate where the water enters

    Hi Son, I'm having some issues with my 1970 Mercury 500 Thunderbolt.
    It only runs on the top two cylinders but the lower cylinder doesn't fire. When started cold it starts really easy and idles well but as the pressure in the coolingsystem increase the lower two cylinder stops firing. I have good compression on all four cylinders, I've rebuilt the cars, I've checked the ignition. Good spark on all plugs and so on.
    I got a tip that this model could suck water backwards into the combustionchamber if the waterjacket fails, I just removed the waterjacket and the gaskets looks like s#!t but I can't see any obvious leaks. the passages between the cooling channels or whatever it is are all corroded and ugly but I can't see any holes. The inside of the middle cover and the cylinder were covered in this grey goo (exhaust gases mixed with water?)
    What would you do next?
    Boat in water for a quick test-run (excuse my mothers loud voice, the horrible quality and my mothers even worse recording-technique.
    th-cam.com/video/bhKVxvvdbM4/w-d-xo.html
    Idling warmed up (water leaking from a broken plastic fitting)
    th-cam.com/video/xexh7dVQC70/w-d-xo.html
    Appreciate all the help I get, best regards!

    Thank you for your help! Question, can you remove the cylinder head/water jacket without pulling the power head?
    I have the same issue with our 67' 50 HP. I Cannot get the clean out plug out from the top of cylinder head, (seized up, tried heating) that's the only thing I have not been able to do, as far as flushing. I noticed you had installed a nipple you yours, etc..

    • @MerCSonL6
      @MerCSonL6  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      You can. You would have to loosen the lower shroud. It will be difficult. I would definitely replace all the screws and bolts. They are very "soft" so proceed with caution. Son

    • @rollmeaway5075

      @@MerCSonL6 Will do, thought I would try to that first, if the bolts will free up.
      Just does look like there is much room to back out the bottom bolts. Hopefully the shroud will slide back enough.
      What are your thoughts on the flush plug? Would you suggest trying to remove the top flush plug, before attempting the above?
      I can drill out/easy out if necessary?
      Do you have a link for new gasket replacement parts? Thanks Son!

    • @MerCSonL6
      @MerCSonL6  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@rollmeaway5075 its certainly worth a try. I'm not 100% sure it would cool properly tho. The gaskets would likely have to be purchased from Oldmercs.com. The 50hp is the only L4 that didn't change a whole lot from the late 60's all the way to the 80's. It is highly likely that any "classic 50" gasket will work. Double check it but I'm pretty sure that's right. Son

      It's likely coming through the exhaust Baffle. You will have to lift the power head to remove exhaust cover and inspect the Baffle very closely. A pin whole can cause the water intrusion. Son

      Its definitely a problem. A leaking spark plug has no effect on failing water jacket unless its dumping water.... in that case it would ground out the plugs and your engine wouldn't run. Let me know. Son
