Olly meets up with the man behind the design of the Type R EP3, Julian Thomson. Julian has his very own Honda Civic Type R EP3 as he tries to employ the philosophy of “Drive what you design” and in this video, we discuss the design process as well as the the final design shape. Julian is a huge fan of the hot hatch, owning many others over the years including a Renault 5 Turbo GT, Golf GTi, Ford XR2i. Nowadays the FL5 Civic Type R that his wife owns as the current daily is welcome alongside a Clio 182, a Lotus Elise (that he also designed) and many more cars in the fleet.

What an absolute legend, by far the best car I've owned and still almost 6 years down the line, I'm still not bored of it, I always turn and look back thinking it's such a good looking car 👌
Couldn't agree more!
Yeah
shoulda asked him why he put carpets in the rear arches and didn’t put any rust protection on it 🤣🤣
Hahahahahahaahhahaha!! That was definitely decided later on by Honda in Japan!
more importantly the sideskirts, were the clips go into the body, water leaks in from here and causes rust on the sills from the inside, which not many people knew until now, common the ep3 and accords the way the side skirts are designed, and because it rains so much in uk water ends up flowing through down into the sills from the sideNot too much of an issue were the temperatures are high such as japan as once water gets down there it evaporates quickly but in the uk because of the low temps water just stays there an eats away at the metal
The peak of EP3 content ❤
You are too kind!
now this is an amazing content for a ep3 owner!!! thank you!
No worries! Thanks for watching!
ive loved my EP3 since i bought it in 2014. its a 2002 in Milano Red. Ive swapped in a K20A2 / 6 speed to try and capture a bit of the Type R essence a few years back and its a joy to drive. It has been showing its age but i still love it dearly. Very cool to see the man who designed it and hear his story. 👍👍
Nice one! They are great fun to drive! At least you have some backstory for the car now too!
Amazing content Olly! Of course we want to see more of Julian in the future!
Thanks! We shall have to see whether he wants to do some more stuff in the future or not
cool to hear the thoughts and process from the actual designer himself! makes me love my Si just that little bit more 😃
Exactly! Makes you see the car in a different way
Very interesting interview. It is a design which has aged unusually well. It’s also a model which has been modified perhaps more than any other, which is why it took me 3 years to find one in original condition.
Great video, would like to see more of him and his collection. He has great taste in cars too, I own/owned most of them
I would love to as well! We shall see if Julian is up for that at some point in the future
What a great video Olly, we need more!
Thanks man! I shall see what I can do!
Brilliant video olly thanks dude 👍
No problem 👍 Glad you enjoyed it!
Great video keen to see his impression of a standard ep3
Thanks! Yeah, I think it has to happen!
Great vid olly , really interesting to see how it was designed . 👌🏻👌🏻👌🏻
Thanks man! Super interesting process isn't it!?
Fantastic vid as always, what a legend actually owning one too !
Thanks man! Appreciate you watching. Yeah, so cool to have one in the collection. Must be so surreal to see the thing you had drawn on paper
Such a great video! A brilliant idea to talk to interesting people involved in Hondas.
I need to find more people involved for future videos!
Great watch 👍

Yes yes yes more of these
Thanks! Glad it is something you like to watch!

this was quite excellent
Thank you kindly sir!
Really good video, never would have known it took so long to design a car
Thanks! Yeah, it is a long old process isn't it!
awesome
Thanks!!
Ooooooshhhh! 👌👌👌
One of the best tuner cars available in the UK the ep3 in my opinion.
Especially for the price!
@@OllyRoss definitely, and there's that much available no matter what route you want to go down
If love to see him drive a stock example of the ep3
Yeah, so would I!
Love this guy, what a boy 😅
Yeah! What a legend!
Love the info. If I was you I would ask him to sign the sun visor in your car it will be worth a loot more if you ever sell it 😉
Julian is welcome to try my standard EP3, 2 owner all Honda history car
I always turn back at my black EP3, it's just one of the most good looking cars ever made. I have a standard one if you're interested, Olly, if you haven't arranged something already of course?
That is good to know. It is nice to have multiple options out there for when the time comes
That guy is a legend always wondered who helped designed it now I know 😉
Just some good knowledge for you! Haha
Use to prefer the EG/EK shape Civic, but as EP shape is getting older and rarer they've aged quite well. Surprised his never driven a stock one and his not got the stock Enkei Wheels on it cause I love the look of them.
Yeah, I think they have aged well too. I need to get Julian into a stock one for another video!
A true hatchback. Not this 5 door crap Honda is making today.
True. I do like the FD2 and FL5 though!
I got linked to this in the latest Caddicarus video and apparently I'm the only one
That’s probably because I filmed the Caddicarus video… 🤷🏻♂️🤷🏻♂️🤷🏻♂️
@@OllyRoss so thats why...
4 wheels on each corner!? What a good idea😂 They was always known as the ugly Honda until that last sort of 10 years. Showing my age in the Honda scene here but they aged very well and I think the design grew on everyone over time
This was a heart breaking design coming from the EK4.
I never understood those headlights, I used to called this the Japanese Scenic (Renault). 😂
Now I wouldn't mind owning one but need to found a solution for those ugly headlights. 😅
Haha! Not quite as wild compared to the FN2 which may have changed peoples opinions.
came here because caddicarus and i want to say one thing "broom broom car"
I own a CW ep3 and a CW FL5 😅

@@OllyRoss phone messed up lol.
1 Good but small Mini Van
Haha! Practical and fun!
Would drive better then a stock ep3 %100 I couldn’t ever drive a stock ep3 again
Haha! It depends on your preferences I guess. I can see why people wouldn't like driving my car as it is pretty harsh for the normal person.
@@OllyRoss i dont like the quietness and the feed back of the suspension
First to watch
Speedy boi!
I have a stock ep3 if your interested!!
Oh really?
@@OllyRoss yep lol. You have seen it before, but very briefly lol. You liked the steering wheel 😀😀
caddicarus guide me to this
and...
ehh?
I guess it’s because I shoot his videos…
Well he isn’t the main designer of the car, Honda Japan are he would of just given them a design and Honda would of adjusted it to what they wanted
Yes, that’s what I said
@@julianthomson4481I like your EP3 design since 2002 when I was undergraduate and managed to buy a new car in the end of production 2005, owned it till now. I hope to see more EP3 sketchy design drawings. thanks Olly for introduce us Mr Thomson here.
That is rad! I am glad I have been able to bring this information from Julian to you
I was using chat-gpt 2 days ago to find out who designed these and planned to do further research, that's no longer needed 👊🏼
Oh nice! Glad I beat AI to it! Haha.
