This was really amazing. The amount of planning and training that must go into something like this is admirable. Do OSU have the best marching band? What others are good?

In addition to sinking the state up north's ship there is another swipe at them. When the TRex opens his mouth and closes it he is eating a guy dressed as a state up north player. What comes flying out is that player's helmet.

Ohio State are the innovators of American marching bands; not the first marching band, but the first with a drum major who did a high-kicking strut, they made the first pictorial formations, the first formations that moved down the field and the first animated formations. They were the first to chart out the formations, the first to give the performers individualized copies of the charted formations, the first to do those charts on a computer and the first to give each member an iPad with fully animated charts of the formations. In other words, every advancement in the state of the art that makes American marching bands what they are today came from Columbus.
There's truly nothing like college marching bands! I was on the drumline in college and it was the best experience of my life! Most college bands rehears 1-2 hours a day 5 days a week during the semester plus an intense 1-2 week preseason camp. Almost every university in America with a football team has a marching band, it is one of the greatest American traditions

I took it for granted to be in the band at Tennessee and what I would give to do it all over again with my older eyes. When the team came on the field, the noise from the stands was like a physical force that went right through you. You couldn't even hear yourself play. I go back there now and it all seems like a blur. Time goes so fast

People forget that band members are essentially athletes. They're performing and entertaining, and... they're attending classes in between games.4
The rivalry between Michigan and The Ohio State University is so intense that Ohio fans do not mention Michigan by name. They are called “the team up North”. Also, every halftime show has a dig at that team up North. The most creative one usually happens at the annual game they play.
Oddly enough, the band from the "team up north" was the first to do Script Ohio.

Another diss to Michigan u may have missed...there was a dude running around in Michigan gear and T-Rex ate him. He spit out the dude's hat at the end 😉. Dissing Michigan is definitely an ongoing theme and they try to get in at least one zinger per performance if they can.

Ohio State is one of the best at this. The dig at Michigan at the end is a running gag - they don't do it in every show, but they do it in a lot, even when they're not playing against Michigan. Their Video Games show, for example, had a Super Mario Bros. bit where the Bowser flag pulled down from the top of the flagpole was a Michigan flag.
This is the best band for this. Ohio State played at Wembley Stadium recently.

Even as a Michigan fan I love the Pirate Ship routine. It's the passion that makes the rivalry so awesome, even when you're on the receiving end at the Marching Band level. Can't wait til the end of November when the Buckeyes travel to Ann Arbor and we win three in a row!
That is good to hear. Yeah the more I learn about College Football, the more I am enjoying the rivalry between Michigan and Ohio State.
There's a healthy respect for Michigan here in Ohio. Even though we enjoy every single one of their losses (shout out to Appalachian State), it's always better for the rivalry when both teams are fighting for a national championship spot when they meet in November.
A part of me is actually happy that Michigan won the game this year, cause it was starting to get a bit boring kicking the shit out of Michigan every year.
@@vct454 I was born in '84, so my youth was spent in the John Cooper era, who when people ask me who my favorite coach ever is I always reply that as a Michigan fan, he is easily my all time favorite college football coach. But it's weird how this rivalry has gone in the past almost 40 years. Two completely different eras, with one team dominating the other; only difference is that Michigan had a pretty bad down period in the middle during the Rich Rod/Hoke abominations. At least now Harbaugh has us back on track and finally winning some of them. I'm crossing my fingers Michigan's players don't feel complacent when it comes to Ohio State because Day and Co. will be battling for their lives in Ann Arbor this year. It'll be interesting to see what the narrative will be if Day loses another game but also has a fantastic season, similar to my man John Cooper. Too bad we have to wait another 7 months until the start of the season!

I'm a Nebraska CornHusker and Ohio is one of our Big 10 rivals, but hey...gotta give respect where respect is due!!! Yes all College and University marching bands do this at home games, and ALL are fabulous. Ohio, however, is THE fabuloso out of all the other fabulosi. 😉🙂 Also, THIS is the best review of this video of them all. Yes everyone is always impressed, but your comparison to the level of musical technique to the level of sports technique was spot on and much appreciated by we musicians. Thank you!
I was in my High School Marching Band for 2 years (also in Ohio) as part of the Color Guard (flag, baton, ribbon, and rifle twirling) and I can confirm that high school marching band is grueling work. We prepared and practiced for MONTHS before parade and football season starts. Including during our summer break when we had band camp - which again, grueling. People truly underestimate the work and dedication it takes to be in a marching band.... hours and hours and hours in the heat, cold, sun, rain, snow, muscles aching, sweat dripping down into your eyes, going back and forth on the field to learn every foot placement and every movement of your body over and over again until it becomes muscle memory because each and every person needs to be in sync (you can't even march in place if you're not supposed to - it can be seen and its a major no-no during band competition... I should know, I got called out for it).... and my school's Band Director lead us with a tough military attitude she learned when she was actually in the military and part of the Military Band. I don't know if it's just an Ohio thing but marching band is taken seriously in many circles and perfection is expected, even in high school, perhaps BECAUSE our college band - the Ohio State University band - is so heralded throughout the country. (The Best Damn Band in the Land!!!) Just as high school football players are scouted out by college teams, the marching band department scouts out exceptional band members as well. It is a whole thing that causal football fans probably know little about.
These incredible band members not only have to rehearse an insane amount of time but they MUST also be good students with good character, talent & commitment!!! That is why they have a stellar reputation, many accolades and are a highly requested college marching band for MANY decades!!! Such a pleasure to watch & I'm sure pure joy & excitement to be a respected member of this incredible marching band!!!! IMO ❤️
As you can see from the comments below, marching bands are a BIG DEAL in the US in high school and college. In fact, here in Portland Oregon, we have the One More Time Around Again Band in which anyone who's ever been in a school (or military) band can play again in our local parades. For the larger parades, people come from around the country to participate. It started in 1985 from an idea the creator got from a similar band in Florida. The musicians range in age from 18 to 85. Imagine a band with 500+ members marching down the street. It's wonderful.
During the Jurassic Park segment, T-Rex also ate a Michigan player.
Latecomer to seeing your video. As others have pointed out, Ohio State University is The Best Damn Band in the Land -- TBDBITL! Ohio was playing that game against Michigan, and they shot down Michigan's pirate ship. What is difficult to see is in the Jurassic Park scene, it is a football player dressed as a Michigan State player, who gets eaten by the T-Rex. And the T-rex is spitting out the helmet. The coordination of learning the music and the marching routines is intense -- and they do 7-8 of these shows a year. They are not paid, and only receive a small amount of class credit hours for all this hard work. But it is an extreme honor to be considered good enough to be a member of this elite group. Also look for a TH-cam clip of the band doing a routine of Ohio Script. The coordination of the lines of the players as they intersect is amazing. One of the reasons Ohio State is TBDBITL! So Ohio State has the best band in their particular style. My personal opinion is that they are the best overall but that's just because I prefer this style. Can't deny some bias as I've been bleeding scarlet and gray since I could make Michigans in my diapers.
I would say there are four different styles of marching bands. For each kind there are a few schools that I think display excellence in each form. You should watch all of them to get a feel what they can be like.
1.) Ohio State is probably the most impressive of the standard college marching band. They make shapes, put together themes to their show, and have great sound. They also have long standing tradition of being excellent, so their reputation certainly precedes them.
2.) Texas A&M displays excellence in marching. They perform complex military marching routines. You'll have to watch to understand what I'm talking about.
3.) Of the Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCU), Jackson St. and Southern typify this flashier style of playing. They move a lot when they play, so it becomes much harder to create as good of a sound. Their drum majors also do much more dancing and give you more of a show. If you've ever seen the movie Drumline this is it.
4.) Stanford rejects uniformity and what a marching band should be altogether to create a very different type of show entirely.

The Rice band (aka The Mob) also does shows very similar to Stanford.
You forgot the mega bands that have too many people to put on a spectacle like Ohio, so they create their own spectacle through shear volume, quality of sound, and "extras." Alabama's Million Dollar Band is a perfect example
The op is just wrong, there are 3 main categories of marching band in the US, Military bands (aka Parade bands), Traditional bands (aka Show Bands), and Drum Corps.
Military style bands typically don't do field shows and they usually focus on parades. When they do a field show they typically do not focus on complicated field choreography and make uniformity between members the primary focus.
Traditional bands which are also called show bands are what the Texas A&M, Ohio State, and HBCU bands perform. They tend to be designed to be organized to please a crowd of (disinterested) football fans. While each college banday have its own particulars the one unifying aspect of all of them is their purpose; entertainment.
Finally there are Drum Corps, which are the most competitively focused band. Drum Corps (traditionally) are restricted to only Brass and Percussion instruments. While they do not tend to play recognizable music their shows are generally far more technical than the other categories and Corps style bands participate in competitions such as US Bands or Drum Corps International (DCI). Further in DCI most bands practice in excess of 10 hours per day 6-7 days out of the week for the months leading up to the competition season.
In short the college side of marching bands is actually only a small portion of the marching band world. The college shows are fun but not representative of marching bands accross the US.

You might get a laugh. In 2010, my bagpipe band was asked to perform some halftime shows with The Ohio State University's Band, playing Amazing Grace. We didn't do any animations. Just marched in, played, and marched out. Alas only one video exists and it is of poor quality. Still an awesome experience, and the band members were great! GO BUCKS!
I was in TBDBITL for 4 years in F-row (which is, along with Q-row, 1 of 2 rows of trombones, 14 per row-12 regular members and 2 alternates). I loved the camaraderie, the life-long friendships, the individual and group pride, the “horn shining parties” the night before the bowl game, “i-dot” parties at the Kappa Kappa Psi house, skull sessions, cramming for music checks, bus trips to play against ttun, my very first ramp entrances, Script Ohio after Script Ohio after ScriptOhio, playing with the Trombone Cheers, and how we’d drink to old Ohio till we wobble in our shoes. Best of times.

Agreed. The Southern University halftime show at LSU this past season was epic. Look for the video produced by the school -- it's about 6:00 minutes long. Another great band to watch is Texas A&M -- different style with intricate patterns. I also like University of Michigan's 9-11 tribute 2 seasons ago -- at night -- with coordinated lights/colors on each individual band member's hat.

I was in a really fantastic, award winning high school marching band. I STILL have nightmares that I’ve overslept for marching band practice or that I don’t remember how to march or I’ve forgotten the music. 😂

It was an incredible experience, best 3 years of my life, but it was intense. I played the sousaphone, so I still feel those performances in my left shoulder. No regrets.
Mert, in high school basketball, it's usually a dance team that does a halftime show in the gym, and some of that in the college level as well. In the football season, the high school bands doe a halftime show as well.
Each college or university has 5 or 6 home games per season, and during those weeks, the band spends more time on the field than the football team.
Another American musical phenomenon you should check out is Drum Corps. Back some years ago, the Phantom Regiment (from my home city) won the national competition in mid August, after having toured all across the country, meeting 10 to 12 other corps in cities for an evening of competion in a high school football stadium. Their show that year was "Spartacus".
One thing which hasn't yet been brought up is the person running around in the figures. He's the drum major--sort of a roving conductor.
Did you notice toward the end of the Jurassic Park segment, at 9:44, the T Rex swallowed one of the players from the opposing team, then at around 10:00, he spit out the helmet?
On a different subject, Chicago has a baseball team called the Cubs, and they had an announcer for decades by the name of Harry Carey. Every home game, during what's called the 7th. Inning Stretch, he'd get the whole stadium on its feet, and lead them in singing "Take me out to the ball game".
Like others have said...as far as this style, the visual creations, they are the best. Also, they do 1 of these every home game. Recently they had to do a new one of these 5 weeks in a row. Imagine learning the music and the formations in a week...then trying to forget it all and learn a new one the next week and so on. I think I'd have issues mixing up moves from different performances, esp if its something similar to one u did recently.
Taking away the visual aspect and focusing solely on the music, HBCUs are the best.
Definitely check out OSU at Wembley. The NFL chose them to represent the NFL...that's impressive. They do a great job with Queen and Rush tributes too. Not a Rush fan but some of the things they do in that one are impressive.

Just hit my 45th year as a Michigan Wolverines fan. I've been in OSU's stadium three times, and every time I've seen this band take the field, I've stood to watch them. Rivalries aside, I appreciate talent when I see it. And when it's being played out in front of me, all I can do is respect it and the effort behind it. Here's hoping for another 45 years of a great rivalry!

As an American, I'd say our marching bands mainly come from three types of institutions: high schools, colleges/universities, and military. The military's marching bands were the originators, but they're fairly plain performances compared to colleges. In high school, marching band is a good extracurricular for the band kids who want opportunities to go places and perform in parades. My old high school's marching band makes a trip from Kansas to London to perform in a parade every three years. In college, marching band is a complete lifestyle, lol.
Thanks to halftime and the association with schools, marching bands are very strongly associated with American football. You will see them regularly perform in parades, too, though. NFL teams all used to have marching bands, but that's a relic of a byegone era now.

They're a military band, and they are the best at what they do. Ohio is considered a show band & they are the best at what they do.
Yes, here in Ohio. I used to be head majorette in high school band and would go to the Ohio State U games just to see the half times. Ok, to see the game also:) . It is a lot of precision work. We love them and they always surprise me.
They practice up to 30 hours a week practice. And it’s really physical too. Think about how large the field is and they have to cover a lot of it when they move while playing instruments. They’re amazing.
Texas A&M has the best military marching band. Their half-time routines are incredible and seeing it in person is just top tier. I recommend looking up a routine where they do the 4 way cross.
Im from Ohio and we love our marching band! A lot of people go to the game just to see the marching band. They are the best!
I call it an 8 hour band concert with football during the intermissions (skull session, pregame, halftime, post game)
I was born and raised in Ohio, so anytime Ohio State comes out to ARZ for a bowl game, we attend their band practice sessions at a local high school field, close to my home. It always hits me that these are just college kids who like to horse around a bit, but when the call goes out to begin practice, they are incredibly disciplined. At the end of practice, they are spent, drenched in perspiration from doing their routines over and over and over again until they get it perfect. They accept nothing less than excellence. They make me proud to be an Ohioan. Btw, Go Bucks!!! Beat Michigan!!!
I have had opportunity to play in a marching band. Not only playing and marching at the same time, but the music is also played by memory most is the time.

Glad you are enjoying this!!! In the states it is only high school and Colledge/university that have bands. These guys practice 20-to 30 hours a week. They memorize the music, so they don't have to carry sheet music. How many? Usually between 192 and 200 at a time. They also have to try out each week to keep their place in the band! We also call the OSU band 'TBDBITL' or 'the best damn band in the land'! lol We love our OSU band! Would love for you to come to a live game. Yes, this is an OSU vs Michigan game, the biggest rivalry in college football for 150 years.
This game was vs Penn State. That was the Penn State band exiting the field before Ohio State's performance. He started the video a few seconds late; I"ve seen this clip before and the previous band was Penn State playing the Penn State fight song, as they exited the field.
I was in the University of Cincinnati (Ohio) Bearcat Marching Band all 4 years of college. We had a pre-game show and a post game show that remained the same for every game during one season and then changed for the next. However, our half-time show was different for every game which required learning new music and formations every week. I recall being on the practice field in freezing rain, rehearsing until the late night hours. Why? Because the experience of performing at a a high level to thousands every week is exhilarating. To be honest, we would begin all this weeks before Freshman orientation week by going to the mandatory summer camp, where new bandsmen would learn the system. The band recently celebrated it's 100 year anniversary!!!...and I was there with over 200 Bearcat Band Alumni to celebrate. The Bearcat Marching Band is famous for it's entry onto the field, by running down the stadium steps. No other band does this that I know of. Here is a the pre-game show for the 100 year anniversary, where myself and over 200 other alums took the field along with the student band. Yes, The Ohio State University Marching Band is the best! I could be biased, because my husband and our two sons were born in Ohio. Regardless, the Buckeyes are topnotch. I understand they practice 20 hours per week, and they are students too. Our daughter was in the high school marching band. I was in a top rated high school marching band within our region and division. We rehearsed weekly during the summer.
Band camp was one week during the hottest week of the summer, 3 days 8-5, 2 days 9-9. All outside, marching on a blacktop football grid.
And 3 days of the week when school started, 3-7, with Saturday 9-12 on competition days. Football games on most Fridays, we didn't leave school until 10 pm.
Competitions were on Saturdays, we boarded the school bus around 1p.m.and weren't home until 11 p.m. at the earliest.
Pretty insane for a group of kids from 14- 18 years old.
And that was the norm for any school at that level.
It was a ton of work, we all complained. But secretly loved it and still talk about it to this day.

Growing up in Oklahoma in the 1960s/1970s there would be several televised football games EVERY Saturday and Sunday, and my Dad and Brother ALWAYS watched at least one or two every weekend! Being a girl I was not that into the games. But when it was halftime, you better believe I was in the living room watching the Halftime Show. Back then almost EVERY U.S. High School and College/University had a marching band that would play in the stands during the game (especially when their team made a touchdown and they would stand and play their school 's "Fight Song") and then they would put on a halftime show. We lived about 1.5 miles from the high school I attended and I remember being able to hear (at our house) the marching band practicing outside EVER DAY in the summer and for at least an hour BEFORE classes in the Fall when the new school year began. Even after the football season ended in November, the marching bands had to keep in practice for competitions where they would go up against other schools in the State (they competed not only for Recognition but for REALLY BIG Trophies)! Another really great College/University level marching band you might want to check out is Texas A&M. I really enjoyed watching your reaction videos and I look forward to seeing more.

The band normally comes out during Half Time which is a break between the 1st and 2nd half of the game for the players and the fans.
The band comes out to give a 'show' to everyone while the fans get their food, drinks, and wait until the beginning of the 2nd half of the game starts after Half Time. We normally practice the music in the band hall until we get that down by heart before practicing our movements on the field. Also, the band begins practice during the beginning of summer which can last for half if not 3 quarters of the whole day either all week (not weekends) or just whatever your band director tells you. We also get 'charts' which show the football field (or parking lot for when I was practicing in band). These charts would have dots on them where you are supposed to be at every measure or so, or just were big pieces are (depends on the music/performance/director). We go through each section of the performance over and over and over again until we are perfectly in line, on time, and in sync. You can spend hours out on the field practicing the same section over and over again. If you don't practice that much, you are liable to miss your steps, placement, or even step/fall on someone. One person out of place can ruin the whole picture so we need to have it drilled into our heads until it becomes muscle memory. (P.S sorry for the long rant)
The UK doesn't have marching bands in schools and universities, but you lot (as you might put it) invented them, in the military, centuries ago. The guy in the red uniform is a 'drum major', which was once an actual military officer commanding the drum brigade. In the US, university (and high school) bands developed out of the Reserve Officer Training Corps (ROTC), a military training institution introduced into colleges and universities in the mid 19th century, gradually shifting to a music-department institution beginning in the early 1900s. Today, only a few schools have an ROTC-based marching band -notably Texas A&M University (mentioned by another commenter), whose performances are more about incredible precision than artistry: when performing some crossing maneuvers, they literally must step between one another's feet! Worth a watch!
A related activity is drum-and-bugle-corps competition, sponsored by Drum Corps International for junior (22 years and under) teams and Drum Corps Associates for all-age or senior corps. They put on some pretty amazingly staged shows, but a different kind of artistry from marching bands like OSU, I think. If you have ever been part of a performance group of any kind, you know how addictive it is, and these groups give more people a chance to perform.
School bands (not necessarily marching bands) performed at football half-times in the early 1900s (then called the 'intermission', which is odd, because I think that the Brits already used the term 'half time' in rugby and association football matches by then) and there was other entertainment like cheering-section singing. Even high schools started doing this. It was almost nothing like what you see at a modern American college football game, but it was the seed from which performances like OSU's grew.
Oh, be aware that Americans freely interchange 'university', 'college', and even 'school' in general conversation in a way that puzzled at least one Brit friend of mine. So 'college football' is played by universities, and also colleges.like Allegheny College, though those are rare nowadays in the larger athletic conferences (leagues). The difference is sometimes confusing. For example Harvard College exists as an institution within Harvard University, which it pre-dates.
My son was a percussionist in a high school marching band. They would get their music for the next school year right before their summer vacation. They would have to learn their parts flawlessly before the band would meet two weeks before the start of the new school year. At that time, they would learn how to march in formation. While it wouldn’t be perfect right away, they would perform for every home game and have the performance completely perfect by the time that the homecoming game was played. Then they would compete against other bands of similar size for the state championship. It was a lot of work and dedication, but it was so worth it! I would imagine that college marching bands would function in a similar manner.

This is so complex you can't believe they pull it off. Someone has to literally look at all the band members they have on the field, then they have to carefully plot where each individual is going to be in every bar of the music and then you have to get fallible humans who make mistakes to all execute this to perfection. Amazing
The band did a really good documentary a couple of years ago where the students and director explain how they rehearse their routines. Check it out. It was filmed the year the band went to Macy's parade and the Rose Bowl.
I'm an alum of TBDBITL. The halftime show is even more mind-blowing in-person. And an Ohio State football game is a whole day experience that leaves you exhausted but wanting more.
OSU's band was named "the best damn band in the land" by Woody Hayes, who coached Ohio State to 5 national titles. And he wasn't wrong.
Other universities tested it legitimately with science and found some of the larger percussion players end up doing more strenuous actions then the football players themselves.
Not only are they sprinting into position, they’re also playing their instruments at the same time!
I am from the states where most high schools and universities have a marching band. I was a cheerleader, my brother was on the football team, and our older sister was in the marching band. We all stayed very busy but it was great fun. I have always wanted to play the bagpipes. I loved watching the Queen's pipe major at her funeral. It still makes me cry. There are actually marching band competition and they are great. They are usually recorded and shown in movie theaters.
Mert, someone made a comment down below which prompted me to sign on again. Sorry about that! She brought up a parade which has hundreds of people marching and playing, like here. Some are current members, and others are in their 80s. Just because something is televised around the world doesn't necessarily mean everyone's seen it. I'm speaking of the Rose Parade in Pasadena (pass-uh-DEAN-uh), CA (an LA suburb). This started back in the 1880s, and is still happening every January 1 in the morning. In the afternoon, a football game is played by the top 2 teams in the country, and it's called the Rose Bowl. Back to the original subject--the parade. It lasts several hours, and has bands and floats from groups across the world. If you've never seen nor heard of it, you ought to mark your calendar.
This wasn't a Michigan-Ohio State match. They just work a shot at Michigan into every routine they do.

I was in marching band and it is incredibly difficult to play and match in formation at the same time.
When their all time greatest football coach called the OSU marching band and not his national champion football team “The Pride of the Buckeyes (All Of Ohio)” that told you everything you need to know. I am surprised that no one mentioned how difficult it is every year to be accepted into the band after auditioning in the blistering heat in Columbus in the summer.
My brother went to high school in Indiana where if you were in band you were automatically in the marching band. I went high school in Illinois and you could be in band and you would be in concert band but marching band was extracurricular.
My brother's high school they consistently placed in the top three in all of Indiana high schools. They worked way harder than any sports team because it's an incredibly physical thing to do You're using so much of your brain and lungs playing the instrument but you're also marching around in a precise formation It's absolutely bonkers.
They would play at football games but they mostly competed against other schools every weekend in the fall! Every other week they would have a football game at home but every week they would go to a local high school to compete against them and they would always be all of them to go beat the other two top heads in state.
I was in the OSUMB 55 years ago. In those days we had charts on paper which limited the amount of animation. Now it is all computerized and they have iPads that show each band member what to do when. Since all the music is memorized, the music provides the synchronization.
If I'm not mistaken, they do a different show every home game. There are no other bands that come close to the TBDBITL. That's The Best Damn Band In The Land. Each member of the band goes through 20-30 hours of practice a week. If you want to see something intense, check out their pregame skull session.
Their website said it is 40-50 hours a week plus they are expected to be at the event 6 hours early
My daughter was in TBDBITL. They learned a new show, which means memorizing all the music and the drill, for each home game, and there may be several home games on successive weeks. Then they practice as a band over 2 hours a day to get it right. On game days they have to be in the Band Center 6 hours before kickoff, in uniform. For a noon game, that means getting up at 4:30 to be there by 6 am. With all that, over 400 students will try out every year for the 225 spots in the Band, and they are regarded as close to rock stars on campus and in the State.
The Ohio State University Football Stadium that can have over 110,000 people in the stands is only 10 minutes away from my apartment. The Ohio State University is known as "The Best Damn Band in the Land!" You should also react to The Ohio State University Marching Band at Wembly Stadium in London where they played a tribute to "The British Invasion" for their half time show during the NFL demonstration games in England!
It's always tremendous to see the halftime shows because they are so well put together. I'm have a bias on saying OSUMB is the best but there are a lot of good marching bands of different styles. A couple of things from this performance... The game was not against Michigan (our rivals) but the schools will take any chance to take a crack at each other. At the end of Jurassic Park, the TRex eats a person dressed up in Michigan gear and at the end, spits out their helmet. Then of course the Pirates is of course also sinking their ship. The amount of work that these women and men do every week to not only get the choreo down but memorize the songs is just incredible.
It starts in high schools. By the time they get to college, they've got a basic understanding of how it's done, but they still put in countless practice hours.
I think your mind would be blown if you watched the Script Ohio videos, especially on Alumni Day where they do FOUR AT ONCE because they have former members, people who graduated, all come back to Columbus and march in the show again!
You said you would go to an Ohio State match just to see the band perform. Well... I did. I traveled 600 miles to see them Live! Ohio won the game but the thrill for me was the Best Damn Band In The Land! I'm going again this year. I can't wait!
We also had these competitions at the High school level every weekend. Plus the two bands would do their entire show at halftime. We practiced 6 days a week.
Marching band typically starts in High School in the US. I was brass section leader for one of the better HS marching bands in Illinois and we would spend all summer rehearsing for the coming year. We learned to meter our steps for both distance and rhythm keeping it so everyone steps with a left or a right on certain beats and we all move at the same speed. You can't tell it from this vid but I guarantee with as good as they are they are all in sync. The way they maintain the formations is just always be aware of where you are in relation to the person next to you, and certain people would be assigned to set the points of any given shape by the yard line and the hash marks.

My brother was in one of the most famous marching bands, the University of Notre Dame. They practiced as much or nearly as much as the football team, 5-6 days per week. The band even has its own football field to practice on, separate from the practice field of the football team. I don't remember how large the band was 30 years ago when he was a student, but it currently has about 380 members. Every year he would need to leave home for a week after Christmas to travel to where the "bowl game" was being played. It was an enormous commitment.
The bowl games are held after the regular season ends. Some invite the teams that compete, others have automatic selections for teams that win their conference (league) of teams within college football. These games are separate from the playoffs that determine the national championship. Prior to TV, there were 7 or 8 bowl games. You might have heard of the oldest, the Rose Bowl (and the accompanying parade), first played in 1902. Because of the TV money generated, they have proliferated in number. I'm no expert, but I believe winning one of the original games carries a bit more prestige.

It’s been almost 30 years, but I’m reminded while watching this, why I loved marching band so much in high school. It was a lot of practice but so much fun. We also went to camp in the summers where we worked in the hot sun all day, but again, so fun. This marching band right here is incredible. You’re right. It takes hard work and dedication.
All big universities have awesome marching bands. All are very talented. They also have bands in high school

Marching band starts often in Jr High with parades and then by high school you are doing half time performances - so by the time you are trying out for college you have been marching while playing for 6 years. Same goes for drum majors - my son started as drum major in the 8th grade including drum major camp. Also marching band is often both a class and after school during the fall - its no joke to be in a good marching band. .
I am from Michigan I do have to sadly admit that the sinking of the Michigan boat was kind of cool.

I did 3 years of high school band. Marching is part of it. I couldn’t do jazz band because I played the clarinet. Yes, it was hours of practice to do this kind of stuff. We went to competitions. I hated it at the time, but looking back I loved it.
In the Pirates of the Caribbean theme, the two boats were under the Michigan (left) banner and the Ohio State (right) banner, because those were the teams playing at the game. I am a Michigan fan (we lost that game), and Ohio State are our rivals. That being said, I am willing, and able, to admit that they have a MUCH better marching band than we do.
No, this was actually at a Penn State game.
Most schools have a marching band, but most are not to this level.
one more thing I would like to point out. Their perspective. They do not have little monitors with an airborne view to see what they look like and where they are. Only the ground view. I think that is what makes it really spectacular.

the Baltimore Ravens are the only NFL team with a full marching band. aside from performing at games, they also do lots of local charity work.
