Primitive Adobe Kiln for Firing Pottery (Season 2, episode 10)

- Primitive elements of earth, water and fire are the basic foundation for my hut and almost everything I make. In this video I use those elements to build a kiln for firing pottery. This kiln is larger than the Dakota fire hole that I have previously used and will allow me to make larger pots and also achieve higher heat. You can also use this kiln for cooking, boiling water, and barbequing. You need to make a gas stove grate/grill out of clay, or any metal your find out there to put a pot on. Great job Chad on building such a cool kiln! :) A lot of people call the kiln you just made a "brick rocket stove."
Hey Chad I'm glad you've made a kiln for your pottery - it's going to make creating floor tiles a LOT easier. One thing I'd suggest is getting your fuel off the ground. Just a couple of bricks with crossbars going across can make a huge difference in your time to fire and your fuel efficiency.
Obviously the build itself is beautiful and making it round sounded unnecessarily complicated, but it made it so much prettier. Looking forward to all the great pottery you will make with this one.
Yeah the main reason I built it is because I want to fire bigger pieces. Also, making it round has an important benefit because that way the heat reflects from the sides and it’s focused in the center. At least that’s my theory.
What you pulled up is Escobar de la Verbera. Such a common medical it is often overlooked. Michael Moore speaks highly of it in Medicinal Plants of the Desert and Canyon West. You would really enjoy the tea. Pick when the yellow flowers are full - in the spring. A hand full boiled in a quart of water for 20 minutes and added to a bath - is excellent at relieving body aches.

This was a great build and timely. With everything snarky going on around the place with various conflicts headlining the news its nice to get back to thinking about meeting simple needs like building something creative to make other creative things. Creative men and women like you are the true inspiration of our age,👍 and long after the guns have gone silent, someone is gonna sit up somewhere on earth and say, hey do you remember that adobe kiln chad made on TH-cam, thats what we should make😆 great video 🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟

@@ChadZuberAdventuresI'm sure that others have said this already but making the chimney taller will pull an even stronger draught due to a greater pressure differential over that greater distance. Also, it would be good to grind off the protruding edges of the bricks with a rough rock. This will make the exterior more cylindrical and you can then more easily coat it with another layer of mud to protect it from the rain more. And eventually I anticipate a ceramic tile roof for this... if only there was a large kiln to fire all of those tiles ! 😜 keep up the amazing work !! Stay safe out there Chad !

Yeah, it's hard work. I worked really hard on this one. I had to rest a couple days after because my hands were sore and tore up. But that makes me stronger.

That was very enjoyable to watch, and see what you've accomplished. I'm looking forward to seeing what you build next. You may want to consider implementing a simple filtration method that will help you filter out the finer clay from the dirt and soil, in order to refine your building materials.
For finer clay I sift it with a basket. That's what I use for making pottery.

That was one sick timelapse! Kiln turned out very cool. You are already a pro in primitive bricklaying.
Loooooong timelapse. It's so difficult to shoot a video when working with mud because I have to wash my hands with water after every shot before I tough the camera. It takes so long. It's just much easier to set up for a timelapse.

My only gripe is there is never enough lol. I could watch these kinds of survival videos all day long, most especially yours... and unfortunately iv already binged all of your content >_< lol.
Ever since i started watching your videos i have really gotten the itch to get out there and build something awesome, but unfortunately there really arent many areas i can go and do this type of survival building. One of these days some random woods shall be graced with my presence and a glorious shelter shall be created.
You'd be surprised what places you may be able to find if you just get out there and start roaming.
I am always fascinated by all things pottery. The precision with which you build is great.

Simple, but profound.
When I built the hut I didn't measure anything but I wanted to make sure that I kept a constant size inside the kiln so I will be able to set the grill in there later.
@@ChadZuberAdventuresif any parts of the interior are too narrow for the grill then you can simply grind that section down with a strong rough rock !! The same idea applies to the outside surface as well ! And even the grill itself can be resized to be smaller as needed !! Its easy to make adobe smaller , but its not easy to make a brick larger... within reason. However mortar works wonders !! Lol

I had a thought about the fire grate for the kiln. Next time, consider using short chunks of stick, embedded in the mud, to pre-create the holes as you pack the mud into position? Let it dry a day or so, then pull the sticks out, forming the holes in a way that will minimize the pressure-created cracks of trying to push a stick into the partially dried mud?
You’re absolutely right. I had thought of that after. I will do it that way the next time. I also need to make a small grill for the fireplace in the hut.

The flow of water in dry land will soften the soil and make it walkable, and you only need to use a stick to dig the soil a little to guide it. The water on the way is green and when you reach the cottage, you can water the vegetable garden

Lovely kiln. It looks well made even though the process had some minor errors. One thing I think you can do is use that kiln as a grill or smoke stack whenever you're not making pottery. I think you could even use it to heat up rocks or other kinds of hard-processed resources to get various types of materials.
But that is just my imagination speaking. I have no clue if it would even be possible to do that with such a kiln.
Still, I love the kiln and I think you can make some very decent pottery with it. It reminds me of a Romano-British kiln shown on Time Team. Or was it Anglo-Saxon? Cannot remember. They showed a lot of kilns in their programs and I think they could be of interest or even inspiration to you.
Thanks. Could you please point out the errors? I didn't do any research or look at construction methods of other kilns before doing this. I know there are different styles of kilns but this one is more of an advanced adaptation of the Dakota fire hole. I figured this style would allow for more air flow and thus higher temperature. It certainly lit way faster than the Dakota fire hole I made and this kiln is much more spacious inside for the large pottery I want to make.
Tried to send a message last night when my internet crashed exactly as I posted it.
But in short terms. I was commenting on how your first attempt at the mud plate with holes got ruined and how you quickly fixed it.
I have seen a lot of historical documentaries and a lot of kilns are found in these. Time Team is my favorite archeology documentary after all.
But historically kilns are often found to be dome shaped, and made up of adobe mud stacked on top of a woven basket that is left to dry, leaving the top open. After you fill it with pottery you put mud on top and seal it up. And then you bake the pottery after which you break the kiln apart to retrieve the pottery after it is done.
Those were mostly stone age and bronze age kilns but the designs have been reused for thousands and thousands of years. Even some iron age people used those.
Kilns would later change and become reusable with bricks and made to such sizes they could be used to make large objects. Becoming more box shaped.
I do not know much about cylindrical kilns but from what I learned about pottery, that I still remember, and what my father told me. The airflow and space for the pottery is the most important part of it.
If the opening of air is too big your kiln will not become hot enough to bake the pottery evenly. Uneven airflow will cool down the pottery and possibly cause it to fracture as cool winds push the hot air out and lower the temperature in different parts of the kiln.
That is why many kilns have small openings to let out the air. However, some kilns only have a singular hole for both heat and air to keep the air from cooling down the pottery.
I believe, but don't quote me on this. That the hole where air leaves needs to be as small or smaller than where air gets in. As to contain the heat and control the air flow.
This is by no means an expert's point of view. But just my own assumptions from watching history/archeology documentaries and my two years of studying pottery in high school. Which was over ten years ago so don't take my word as truth. I do not know if it is.@@ChadZuberAdventures

👍👌👏 Oh WOW, what a huge amount of effort. The skin on your fingers must be worn off badly. I'm very eagerly looking forward to watch the killn in function. You know I have never heard you talk, but you have a nice voice. Also, you should make a clay colander, so if you ever try to make noodles or something, you have what you need.
I use a basket as a colander. It works perfectly well.

I’ve been using stone tools for a long time. I just haven’t made ornamental stone tools like people keep asking because they aren’t practical but I will do it for you to see.

very cool . you should think about using tiles to use as shingles for your roof on the hut . they would be safer and hold in heat better and rain out better .
That would be really difficult because the branches of the roof are all crooked. There are no straight branches out here.

Chad, have you seen John Plant's experiments with clay tuyers and forced air for metal work? if you go around the desert to pick up trash, I imagine there is a LOT of old rusty Iron you could use to make a shovel. Not only would that be a cool video, but you'd also be helping mother earth!
There is literally nothing out here to smelt. This is stone age territory but maybe I can find some stuff elsewhere.
@@ChadZuberAdventures what about the rocks themselves? Do you have any friends who are rock hounds, or geologists? Maybe you walk over the rocks you need every day! I have no idea. I’ve seen some sandstone type of material in your videos.
I know one geologist but he’s not near here. Nobody is near this place. I will have to research this on my own.

@mattparker9726 That would be heavy. The bone one works for basic shovelling purposes. It broke because I was smacking it on the hard clay. You see everything has a specific purpose. I should have used a rock for compacting the clay and not the bone shovel.

Anyway, are there any other ways to get water when the dry season strikes?
One reason I made this kiln is to make large water vessels to store water. Water storage is the only way to keep easy access to water here. The spring has water when there is enough rain but it hasn't rained for almost two months so it is dry now.

Hello. What distance and angle does the river flow from the hut? If you make a small dam in front of the water with stones and branches a few kilometers higher, the water will rise. By directing the water to the land, direct the flow towards the hut.
It's a couple miles away. A dam a few kilometers high??? Do you know how big that is??

chad what is your experience or opinion on stone vessals and smooth stone axe hammers, are they something your would like a go at making or do you think the time commitment for them may be too much to fit your purposes?
A stone vessel is really tough to make using primitive methods. Clay is far easier and faster. A stone axe is great if it is made really well and with the right kind of stone. The stone here wears fast. It's not that hard therefore an axe would need to be replaced rather frequently.

He's already got a fireplace... and clearly he's been fine without boots there for years.
These kinds of furnaces aren't practical for cooking like his fireplace is, and they put off way too much heat once you get them going to be comfortable In a living space.
This furnace would light the roof on fire!

Chad, do you just use beeswax in your bottle gourds? My first attempt at making a bottle gourd water bottle failed as it mildew'd under the beeswax lining and the bottom rotted.
You need to let it dry out between uses and keep it in a dry location. If the gourd leaks then you can coat the inside with hot beeswax. Eventually you'll have to add more but it worked for me. Ideally you find a gourd that doesn't leak though. The gourd needs to be fully dried out before using it.

You can see in the video that it took two days. I could do it faster if I wasn't filming. I built the foundation first then the next day I built the walls. Done!
Save the bones, even if they break! It's a source of calcium, handy for farming and mortar.

it looks like you need a schowel didn't you know you can right click with 2 stones and make a patern to create a schowel head? and crafting it with a stich you can make a good stone chowel
