Seeing these bears up close is a reminder of that lost aesthetic of 1960s Disney when they were using people like Marc Davis to design all the characters so there was a consistent style to everything.
I know they’d never do it, but them preforming Little Patch Of Heaven from Home On The Range would’ve been PERFECT! It’s country, it’s southern, and it could be an ensemble piece!
Your journey to appreciating Liver Lips is exactly like mine. Saw him in the Disneyland singalong tape, and he terrified me. Nowadays, he’s my favorite member of the group
I feel like the female bears deserve as much meet n' greet time as the male ones. I honestly did not know that Teddi and the triplets had walk around versions of themselves.
I honestly haven't heard anyone actually happy with the most recent change. And while I understand that it was a jukebox attraction of covers, it had its own identity compared to the rest of Disney. Now it's yet another jukebox of Disney songs, all the while you've been listening to Disney songs outside of the attraction.
The western theme of Frontierland seems so weird at times. Remember, westerns were basically the superhero genre of the 50s until space became the new big thing. Westerns would fade in and out of popularity but have never truly been forgotten mainly thanks to the John Wayne and Clint Eastwood movies in the 70s and other beloved favorites like Young Guns and Back to the Future 3.
When I was little, my mom had a Big Al poster hanging up in our house that she got from a trip to Disneyland she took long before she and my dad were married. It was a little confusing to me, because my dad's nickname among his friends is "Big Al." So for the longest time, I wondered why we had a poster of this bear hanging up with my dad's nickname. But then Mom explained it, and I thought it was the coolest thing for there to be a Big Al in Disneyland. And if they really are making those Big Al plushies, clearly I need one :D
Nice video! I saw the bears in Disney on Parade back in '73. The Sun Bonnets were first seen up near the ceiling hanging by those trapezes, as you point out. Then, a few minutes later they re-emerged on ground level dancing. (Presumably two different sets of costumes and performers were used.) Wendell was pictured in the program but not present in the show (at least not when it played in Los Angeles). I was pleasantly surprised when, five or so years later, Wendell started appearing in the parks as a walk-around character. Thanks for doing the video. I didn't know the Tokyo Disney versions of the overlays were so different!
If they had to have Big Al sing a Disney song, they honestly should have went with It's A Small World instead of Remember Me. That way they could keep the gag of Henry calling up the whole gang to drown out him out so It's A Small World doesn't get stuck in the audiences' heads.
As someone who has never and probably will never be able to afford to go to one of these parks, the thing that stands out about the Country Bears to me is how it had that much of a cultural impact. We wouldn't have the big animatronic arcade and pizzeria movement of the late 70's and early 80's without someone seeing the Country Bears and saying "yeah, I can do that, but with a gorilla." And while there is a reason to not like the IP invasion hitting their show, at least they get to have a show and not had them ripped out to make dance floors. And they won't be a distant memory that kids only know through the pop culture osmosis of a certain video game franchise about murderous animatronics. Anyway, I remember kind of being excited for the movie since it was the Jim Henson Creature Shop and the writers of the film were from Animaniacs. Then I heard how lousy it was and ignored it, and then saw bits of it and...well, it's a better Blues Brothers 2000 than Blues Brothers 2000 at least.
"Yeah, I can do that, but with a gorilla." To be fair, I think Chuck E. Cheese was the one trying to copy the bears first. Then, Aaron Fechter made the Country Bear *Jubilee*, also known as the Hard Luck Bears (which, fun fact, was the origin of Billy Bob). Then the gorilla -- Fatz Geronimo, originally Fatz Gorilla -- would arrive as part of the Wolf Pack 5.
@@mdalsted 100%, Nolan Buschnell has said that the Country Bear Jamboree directly inspired him to make Chuck E. Cheese. In a weird way there’s a domino effect between the Mineral King Ski Resort and Five Nights at Freddy’s, haha
I was lucky enough to have seen my first show of Country Bears in Tokyo in early June. Even if it was the vacation overlay (which had been in 5 year hiatus) it still gave me something I couldn’t experience before. Being a Cali resident I don’t get that same luxury. So I can now understand why the show is so beloved.
I was nervous about meeting the bears outside the attraction too at first, but then I finally got the opportunity to meet them and they weren't so bad after all.
My favorite bear is Ernest, and my wife’s is Wendell! Though she is still terrified of all the walk around costumes, she’s warmed up to the show- probably because of how much I love it. Great video, I loved seeing a deep dive into all the bears and giving them the attention they deserve! Here’s hoping we get more shows in the future- maybe a Halloween show?
I’m the other way around- my headcanon is that Romeo is his real name and Liver Lips is a nickname/stage name, especially since his “nickname” on that list of nicknames was just Liver Lips
I think an animated film by WDAS, either 2D or 3D, could be a great way to get the bears more fans. Especially if they made it an “origin story” so to speak of Henry and Wendell trying to put together the original show and meeting all the bears along the way.
You know, as someone who has never been to a Disney theme park or knew anything about the Country Bears, I have to say, I find this corny, charmingly hokey group of performers a million times more charming in their original incarnations than the glorified jukebox show that has been heavily sanitized nowadays. I think they could have honestly made a decent animated show out of these characters back in the day.
Colin, I agree with you on your statement on Musical Jamboree, I love the original show and the overlays that came after it, in fact the first time I saw the show, it actually got me into 60’s country or classic country music and it made me who I am today. The new show just gives me a weird feeling inside, I get they were trying to shoehorn so many references to the original show, (I love the queue) but it just feels so Disneyfied and not original anymore.
Considering that the original is just a collection of covers of other songs, with only 2 original songs being produced for the show, this is pretty much on brand for the bears, and I guess with Iger around this pretty much is the best option for the modern day, not completely stripped of the immersion
46:39 Well the vacation howdown was meant to be permanent, it was in disneyland and even disney world, but it was retired due to attendance drops so it's why the original came back,
I had the Disneyland Singalong vhs in the 90s and the Bears terrified me 😂 funnily enough, the Grim Grinning Ghosts was one of my favorites, but like Colin said, Liverlips freaked me out the most 😂😂😂😂 I finally got to see the Country Bear Jamboree when I went to WDW in 2022. I was so happy 🤩
I've been saying this for the past couple of weeks, I think that would be absolutely amazing. They even probably have vocal stems so it probably wouldn't be hard to match the jokes to new numbers either, although the only thing is bringing on the musicians each time.
I think you’re thinking about this all wrong is sad to see some things go in frontier land but look how much you gained with more variety and more fun to be had. I think it’s a surprising and fun thing to see evolve. Now I don’t know what’s in store for the country Bears, but I’m pretty happy. They’re singing Disney songs and go onto to make new songs in the future. It’s one of those shows where I think it’s meant to change a little bit.
Say what you will about animatronics, but IMO, the Country Bears are some of the best-looking and least scary animatronic characters there are. I still have a certain fondness for the janky look of Chuck E. Cheese's animatronics, but most of the Country Bears look genuinely cute and lovable to me, especially Henry and Trixie. EDIT: Dolores the octopus is great too
I’ve never seen the Country Bears in any of their iterations, not even the movie. When I was really young I was pretty terrified of most animatronics, and my parents made the (probably wise) decision to steer clear of Grizzly Hall during the trips we made to Disney World while I still had that fear. I hope someday I’m able to experience seeing a show for myself now that I’m older and can appreciate the characters.
Thanks for the recap. I got to see CBJ at WDW in the 70s, 80s, 90s, 2000s, and 2010s. Never saw Vacation or Christmas. I was trying to count up today how many characters there were and their names, so this video helped perfectly.
Having said that, you know what this same basic show layout would have been perfect for? A Muppet Show animatronic extravaganza. Think about it. The red curtains. Henry=Kermit, Wendell=Fozzie, Teddi=Piggy, 5 Bear Rugs=Electric Mayhem, etc. Even the placement of the trophy heads is ideal to locate a balcony for Statler and Waldorf. Don't get me wrong, I love Muppet-Vision 3D and even liked the costume show Here Come the Muppets, and I'm not picturing this as a replacement for CBJ rather as an additional attraction at a different Park, like Indy/Dinosaur... but an ALL-animatronic show with the Muppets in the proper scale would be so neat to see.
i have imagined up what the country bear musical jamboree's opening song would be like if it was longer; the second time henry sings "the country bear musical jamboree," he says "let's meet the band!" and then acts like how he did in the bear band serenade song, talking rhythimically about each member. the funniest verse is for zeke; he says, "that right there is zeke, he's the leader of the band. he may be really smart, but he can't even stand!" causing zeke to respond with "that isn't funny!" they also sort of introduce oscar, but when he panics when the spotlight points at him, zeb encourages him, then he squeaks his big al plushie. after that, the song continues with the part where henry says "bring all your friends"
your video on the Country Bears was so charming, I had no idea a lot of the bears had their own backstories. it was interesting to listen to. I loved the attraction itself. I briefly remember the Christmas overlay and always love seeing that on the Magical of Christmas at Walt Disney World vacation video. I tend to watch that every year to get into the Christmas spirit. I also owned the Disneyland fun sing along and always knew the great outdoors song from that sing along. I don't think I ever saw the summer vacation overlay. The song Great Outdoors is kind of iconic now XD I don't mind the new version to the country bears show, its not bad, at the time could've done a nice medium where you have some new original songs with a little disney in the mix. Have it to give more lore on the Country Bears. Like how the movie tried XD; Which I do enjoy the movie. Its good campy fun!

It is bizarre they cast a separate singing voice for the bear voiced by Toby Huss - the guy’s an amazing singer with a dead-on Sinatra impression, so I don’t know why they didn’t trust him to just… sing in the same voice he did the speaking parts in.
I genuinely love the Country Bears. Whenever I'm with a group of people at Disney World, I'm the only one who wants to see the bears in concert. You uncultured swines! Are you not amused by some big bear singing his way through "Blood on the Saddle". Heck, I even saw their movie in theaters, though that's not much to brag about. Honestly I'm just happy the attraction's still around. Sure, the addition of Disney songs did irritate me for a bit, but they're not terrible. Heck, I actually think Big Al breaking down through "Remember Me" is hilarious. So yeah, happy the Five Bear Rugs plus the rest are still rompin' and hollerin' over in Frontierland. Though for the record, they were creepy as heck in the Disneyland Fun Sing Along. Seriously, they were freakier lookin' than any of the villains and ghosts in the Haunted Mansion section!
Disney changing Liver Lips' name to Romeo is how I learned "liverlips" is a slur, used against alcoholics and various ethnicities with prominent lips. It's even been used as an Italophobic and antisemitic epithet. First I learn "beyond the pale" is an anti-Irish phrase, and now this! How many other seemingly innocuous terms are actually super racist, ableist, etc.?
The Terrence and Dolores number sadly makes me think of Marilyn Manson’s latest music video, “As Sick As The Secrets Within.” Watch the video at your own risk and you’ll know why. 😳
Here’s the biggest problem with the new country bear jamboree are they gonna update the songs after some of these songs start not being relevant Are they gonna change them? That is one of the key things that Disney has never said if they would rotate different songs in and out to keep it up-to-date
Colin has very briefly mentioned FNAF in the past. He's said that he's a fan of the series and appreciates how the franchise has introduced more and more people to the art and history of animatronics. But he also is a little annoyed whenever FNAF is brought up every single time somebody makes a video or post about animatronics, clogging up discussions on the subject.

First I learn "beyond the pale" is an anti-Irish phrase, and now this! How many other seemingly innocuous terms are actually super racist, ableist, etc.?
27:12 "The Dude". Now, "Dude" - that's a name no one would self-apply where I come from.
I had to it's one of my favored movies
The Terrence and Dolores number sadly makes me think of Marilyn Manson’s latest music video, “As Sick As The Secrets Within.” Watch the video at your own risk and you’ll know why. 😳
Let it ride.
You know I just hope that the original country bear jamboree will return to walt disney world Florida
I've know the feeling enoyjing a movie you know is bad or ugly and yet no matter how you like it. Mine is the Grinch from 2000
Would of let Wierd Al voice Max, Greg Eagles Voice Buff, and Jim Cummings voice Melvin.
Since they sang Bare Necessties did Baloo make a cameo ?
5:40 actually, zeb doesn't sneeze in the third "falalalala;" zeke even says "he didn't sneeze!" when he noticed that
All I can think of when I hear the words Country Bear Jamboree now is Christopher Walken😂
Do you like the Sound of Crunching Wood? I do.
EHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH The County Bears Were ACTUALLY A Part Of Disney?”
Big als my favorite
Whoe down 😂😂😂
Here’s the biggest problem with the new country bear jamboree are they gonna update the songs after some of these songs start not being relevant Are they gonna change them? That is one of the key things that Disney has never said if they would rotate different songs in and out to keep it up-to-date
🐻🎻
First comment love the country bears never got to go but always wish I did
if you really think about it if it wasn't for the Country Bear Jamboree we wouldn't have freddy fazbear and gang

Why were the costumes' necks so uncomfortabley long
So the person inside could see
Have you heard of a TH-camr called Alex the historian
I'm curious are you ever going to talk about five nights at Freddy's since it's a game all about animatronics
Since you mentioned that Liver Lips is your favorite Country Bear now, why didn't you mention that he's about to be removed for being too offensive ?
I don't like the new outfits.
They feel... Too clothed.
Too... Tailored
