I agree that pot manufacturers need to make matching saucers to match the pot…it’s a must! Also, there should be a drainage hole in every pot made! One of my pet peeves is to fall in love with a pot only to find out there is no drainage hole. I will not drill my own any longer as I’ve ruined too many pots attempting it…yes I use the correct drill bit but that’s no guarantee.

I know I’m in the minority here, but I actually prefer ceramic pots without drainage holes. I keep all of my houseplants in plastic nursery pots and then just skip those in the pretty ceramic pots. I like it this way because I like to bottom water my plants and if the ceramic pots don’t have holes, I can water them all in place.

Funny how many houseplants do just fine without a bottom hole! I have plenty of both, pots with holes and those with none. I think it’s good to be more flexible and thoughtfully care for whatever the plants need. And a lovely china plate is a great underpot protector for those that might leak a little

I find I have uses for both types of pots - with and without drain holes. I have some ceramic pots that I painted and glazed myself. Those have holes and matching saucers, but that’s a rare situation. It’s true also that I have bought a beautiful container without holes, and those I don’t risk drilling but use to put a plant inside in its nursery can and water from the bottom. I put a few stones or marbles in to keep it from sitting in water all the time. It all depends on the plant and the situation. Cost of the container is also a variable.

I love the idea of Laura making her own pot and saucer line. I like to use a piece of window screen in the bottom of my pots so water goes through but not the soil. It last a long time and I use it over and over.

Make sure the bottom of the saucers are ultra smooth. It's not such a great thing if they can scratch nice wood surfaces or countertop surfaces. Whenever I buy a kitchen item (cups, dishes, etc) I always make sure the bottom is smooth, even with bakeware.

How did your Thanksgiving hosting go? When you mentioned your parents spent the night with the kids while you had a date night I thought what a nice little get away for them as well. They probably appreciated waking up to coffee ☕️ in a kitchen as opposed to their basement. I’m praying all goes well with the remainder of their remodel, not only for their sake but I’m so excited to see the progress. I just love the remodel process, can’t wait to see the cupboards and flooring going in. Thank your Dad for his time the other day, what a lovely life he’s made. 2nd video, I've been trying to watch this recap for about 3 hours. My older sister always calls me 10 to 20 times a day, I'm not kidding. She has stage 4 kidney cancer and it is all. throughout her little body. She's been fighting it for over 2 years. She takes 2 chemo pills a day everyday since she was diagnosed. Plus she does a infusion every 3 weeks, through her port
She is the most strongest person I've ever scene. We are not giving up
She has so much faith, God does heal every second of everyday and night. She had the cancer eat through her leg, the biggest bone in our bodies and we had to travel over 50 miles to the hospital. I have never in my life scene anyone in my life, scream and cry and Pray than she did on the way to the hospital. And about 3 months ago the cancer ate through her little arm almost her shoulder and she's been in the hospital twice in the last month with phmonia. But the little thing is back home now cooking and cleaning and doing laundry. Please help me Pray for her everyone that reads this. I thank God everyday for healing her. Not to heal her but for healing her. It just breaks my heart into for her to have to suffer so much. Now I forgot what I got on here to say. I'm 64 and she's 66. We both love flowers so much and I tell her about Laura and Aaron all the time a a few more people I watch. She takes up all my time, but im just glad I can still talk to her. I'm so sorry I put all this on here but more people that are Praying for all the old evil cancer just to go away with whoever is fighting it in the whole world the better.

About the pot size thing. If you upshift a plant to too big of a pot, when you water the plant, the soil in the empty space that has no roots will stay wet for too long. It creates a perfect condition for root rot. If you plant a plant in the ground, the water will dissipate out beyond the roots and drain.

    • @maynardgreenhouse
      @maynardgreenhouse 8 หลายเดือนก่อน +4

Also regular soil is loaded with microbes that move moisture around which doesn’t happen as much with soiless mixes

Laura, have you taught your kids how to make mud pies? You have the perfect dirt for it (I know, growing up near you. That powder white dirt). My recipe: mound up a volcano shape of loose dirt and carefully make a crater in the top. Gently trickle water into the crater and let it sit long enough for the water to soak it and get a little stable. Then gently remove the loose dirt from around the wet dirt and it results in little mud “dishes”. You can set them out to dry. You can make large and small sizes. Add berries, pebbles, leaves, flowers or flower petals to decorate at any stage in the process. Of course this is more of a summer project, but I was reminded of hours of childhood fun when someone commented about making a bigger more permanent sand box. The dirt land would be a perfect place for mud pies without any formal preparation needed.

I've read that the roots circling around inside the pot is one reason shrubs get "choked" and die (even after in-ground planting), particulary arborvitae. I suppose because as the roots get larger and woodier they eventually girdle the trunk.

I had my first pair of Felcos this past spring summer as I got them for Christmas last year. They need a good clean so a video would be amazing.
Love your channel and all that you do to inspire us gardeners.

For covering drain holes to keep soil in pots, DRYWALL TAPE is the best option I've found. It's a fine mesh, sticks to the bottom of the pot (stays in place), and is plastic so it doesn't break down. I drywall tape the holes of all my pots before planting. Credit to Cassidy of Succulents and Sunshine; I think that's where I first heard the idea.

I purchased two Hoselinks this year and they really made watering easy again. Both nozzles had a part break but Hoselink immediately replaced them with zero hassle. I may buy a third as they worked out so well.

I found a helpful video on YT of a lady talking about pests showing us what's wrong in our garden. She said we need to treat the plant by providing what it needs instead of the pests. The pests are a warning sign and not only that, they are food for beneficials. For example - aphids are telling you there is too much nitrogen in your soil. I had a bad aphid infestation on a brand new loquat tree I planted and was about to start treating with Neem until I found her video. Instead I left it alone, fertilized it with rich compost. Clovers popped up all around the root system and I let those grow to aid in the nitrogen fix. 4 weeks later and now ladybugs have arrived to clean up the aphids, the plant is almost completely aphid free and it's pushing out new growth even in December like crazy. I am so happy I didn't treat it and instead focused on the health of the plant/soil to solve the issue!

A thought on the sunporch. Why not open it up so you have one big open air front porch that can hold a porch swing and rocking chairs? Perfect for an old farmhouse.

Yep, I bought all the fixings when I utilized your recent sale - on one of the falco shears there's a video of Laura cleaning up the sheers and using the oil and grease that was super helpful - maybe other people watched that as well and threw things in their cart? The video is from a few years back - super excited to get an updated video, the former one is so helpful!

I've broken a tree root ball before and what I did was cut the tree WAY back and babied the heck out of it and the next year there was new growth and the tree is now doing fine. You have to leave some foliage for the tree to survive but I gave it a heck of a haircut so the roots don't have to support so much green growth. A tree is like any other plant that you divide - plant it, prune it back and treat it like your child. Now this may not work on all species of trees but it worked for me. I'm not sure it would work for conifers, however. They seem to be a different kettle of fish.

I love all your videos and get so much inspiration and knowledge from them. Have you ever heard of a fertigator for fertilizing? You install it inline into your landscape water system and fill it with liquid fertilizer and it fertilizes while watering. You can adjust how much to release or turn off altogether. I have one on my 2 1/2 acre property in the high desert of California and it has been a game changer for me.

Kudo's to you and Aaron for all of the gifts you get for everyone. My husband and I have one grandson and he's the only one we get gifts for. Several years ago, my grown children asked if we could stop exchanging gifts. It was getting harder and harder to choose gifts for each other and they said that Christmas should just be about getting together with family and not stressing over what gift to buy. My husband and I also stopped exchanging gifts with siblings over 30 years ago for the same reason.
