Thank you for bringing up the “classic” issue. I spent years wearing colors that didn’t suit me bc I “needed” a black dress, black leather jacket, white tee, and white button up. I don’t look great in white or black and have dyed my whites and sold the rest. I had to accept that MY classics look different.
I've nearly bought into an idea that wearing florals is not cool. A floral knee length dress is an absolute staple for me and i find it extremely versatile 😊
👍 I'm all for looking at this issue from a different pov! Unlike you those colors suit me but I spent years trying to wear colors that don't cos I'm a boho girl and the conventional 'wisdom' is that boho is all browns etc. Then I tried to move away from the boho thing and was unhappy. So now I'm trying to make boho work for me within my color palette. And dyeing some of my clothes is my current project!
I used to think very similar and finally woke up and realized I needed to buy and wear exactly what appeals to me and flatters me, not what some magazine’s editor says I should have. Every season I was all about “basics” like black, white, navy, etc. not embracing the fact that I am absolutely a bright color person! ❤️💙💜🧡
The bit that I struggle with is always the static image. For example somebody models an outfit complete with trench coat or biker jacket. But if you go out for lunch for example and take your coat off, you're now just wearing say basic jeans and t-shirt. The fully styled outfit just got you into the restaurant but no more as you can't really sit with your coat on. So for that reason I always find a blazer so much more versatile as I can keep it on and truly wear it as part of my outfit. For that reason I'd love to see you model some of your outfits when you take your coat off and put your handbag down - and see what is left! And if it still makes for a stylish outfit! Would love to see a part 2. I would be interested to see the basics versus the staples but I'm a bit intrigued.. At the end of the day I don't have to be able to classify an item of clothing to wear it and enjoy it! But I love your videos anyway.
Ah love these insights Justine! Thank you! And it's so true about not having to classify things in your closet - we should wear and love everything! I think for me it is helpful, so hopefully there is a nugget of info in there! xx
Good point, Justine...I always view a trench coat or biker jacket as a way to stay warm and dry. A blazer, on the other hand, is a way to elevate an outfit.
Yes! You articulated so well what I am always thinking. I don’t live in an area where people even really see my outer wear other than when I walk in. Making it crucial to the outfit doesn’t work for me. One of my favorite things is a big scarf or wrap that can be worn with my coat but also used to drape over my shoulders if it’s chilly. The pattern still adds to the outfit. Xoxo
I agree. I think it's important to have outerwear that works with your wardrobe (and keeps you dry and warm), but I don't consider a coat part of an "outfit"-nor a purse, both of which you put away once you've arrived somewhere. I see a lot of capsule wardrobes on youtube that add a trench to something and consider that an entirely new outfit, or change the shoes to sneakers and consider that a new outfit too. Working in Manhattan, sneakers are necessary to get from one place to another because you walk so much in the city, but once you get there you change your shoes. And your bag depends on what you need to carry. I freelance, so sometimes bring my own laptop. That means I carry a laptop bag or backpack that day. I have nice laptop bags and backpacks, but don't consider them part of my outfit. I have a work partner who brings rolling luggage to the job....she got tired of lugging her laptop, shoes, purse, etc. I thought it was a brilliant idea.
Thank you for this. I am coming to the realization that just because something is trending or is a “classic “ doesn’t mean it’s in my comfort zone. I love the look of blazers and jackets, but always end up taking them off because I feel constricted. Give me a comfy cardigan any day.
Amazing video!!! Just wonderful. It took me 30+ year to realize that cotton white button down shirt is not my staple. I absolutely love that you encourage people to find their own style. Thank you!! Little tip that helped me, in case someone is struggling to find the staple. One day I sat down and wrote down my best outfits over the years. The ones that I loved felt great in. I thought of my best pictures, what was I wearing in them, etc. When I analyzed them for style elements. What did they had in common? I was trying to identify why I loved them so much. Was it the color, what is the fabric, was it the cut? And what do you know I realized that I love blouses in flowy fabrics over pencil skirts or body skiming skirts, I love layers, jackets, long cardigans etc. I love to layer my many jewelry. Yes the elegant pearl earrings did nothing for my body. Its shocking how this one exercise taught me.
"Define your own 'classics'." Holy shit --mind blown! I was starting to get there myself, w/the thought of a "style uniform" created from what I like/personally suits me. But I still thought my uniform needed to include the industry standard of classics. Which often age me and add a "dowdy" factor. But I thought, "It's just gotta be the fit!" And I was right, in part, when cropped cardigans came out that hit my right at my sweet spot. But... I'm left w/this feeling like, I fit in; I'm playing the part; but I don't feel like me. Starting now: Operation Discover My Own Classics!
Yup, finding your own style uniform is SO helpful! I've finally accepted mine and while it's currently reasonably in vogue I know it'll drop out again in the next few years; and I've decided I don't care. It suits me and it's extremely practical (I can transition it thru all seasons), so I'm keeping it.
@@susie9893 Love to hear what your style uniform consists of. I think mine is just jeans and tees or interesting tops. Tank dresses with blazers for dress-up.
Yes. The "classic" issue. For instance, sneakers. I bought a pair of black sneakers because I thought it was a wardrobe staple, but I only wore it a handful of times. And I didn't really feel like me while wearing them. Instead, I prefer loafers or ballet flats. They're more comfortable for me and I feel great in them.
I have one pr of white, canvas, sneakers. Like you I love flats…loafers, ballet, flat sandals. I think a lot of this is my age and upbringing. I’m 65 and grow up wearing Adidas or Nike. And I just really don’t like wearing them.
I'm the opposite, I've been reading for years that I should have ballet flats, but a 4'10" with thick legs, they look awful, and I hate them on me. I don't find them comfortable either.
My staples are weird, I suppose, as they’re mostly dresses. Knit dresses for the cold months, especially, what could be easier or more comfy?. I dutifully bought the black pencil skirt, yes it looks great. Do I wear it, no, it’s difficult to sit or walk in it. I’m glad I resisted the mega-hardware shiny black leather moto jacket, it never felt like me, I have no edgy, tough or rock chic in me. Roughed-up micro denim shorts? Never. I compromised on one “staple” and bought a softer, black suede one. I wore it once or twice, not one of my better investments. With your encouragement, I’m dressing more for the real me. I am what I am, a midle-aged, middle-class woman who likes quiet classics. I’m tired of trying to be a rock-festival boho chick.
I know the feeling. E.v.e.r.y summer I feel that I shouldget into Daisy Dukes and flowy bohemien dresses and tall boots; Well I'm middle aged and I've had cellulite from my butt to my knees since I was 16. The only reason for and the only time I felt good wearing shorts has been functionel because I was an athlete. On the court but otherwise? No! Not to mention the little bulge at my cecarien-scar, that the edges of lowrise Daisy's cut into like a knife. Big flowy dresses? I'm a EU size 4 on top, 6-8 on bottum and short. I look like I'm trying to save myself from a mile of bubblewrap while stepping on it and slipping like it was a banana peel 🤣 Long boots? I spend 14 years as an athlete, on a court running, jumping, stopping dead track and hurling around in the opposite direction at a second interval. I've got legs like a horses thighs and wear a size 3 shoe. It's not gonna happen. Yet, I've bought God knows how many distressed Daisy Dukes, bohemian dresses and long boots. I cant even get a rain boot above my ancle to fit 🙄 But that is all summer things that you HAVE to have. Summer staples. No. Not here. I'm a middle aged mama. I used to be a younger athlete that did'nt fit in it. I'm done spending money and feeling that bad about myself.
@@louiseerbslisbjerg7854 So good, i enjoyed this post! I'm almost 58, and it's true; we have to know who we are and embrace that instead of chasing that dream that we want to "be" Audrey Hepburn (ok, maybe one dress...) You GO, GIRL! ;)
@@louiseerbslisbjerg7854 Haha I've stopped believing in the "flowy dress + tall boots" outfit in general. It looks amazing in pictures but it must be so uncomfortable to wear, you would either be freezing in the lightweight dress or get really sweaty legs under the boots depending on the weather. And denim shorts being comfortable is a complete myth. For me they always ride up when I walk and i don't like showing my butt cheeks in public. What I want most from my summer outfits is comfort. Something that is easy to throw on in the morning, doesn't turn me into a sweaty mess and doesn't get ruined when I sit down in the grass.
I bought the classic cream coloured trench coat which I've hardly worn as because I'm quite short and slim, I just feel it overpowers me. Also the colour seems to wash me out. Then bought a knee length trench coat in air force blue which is less fussy in design and it's much more me. You are so right about " classics ", they are different for different people.xx
I confess I have even managed to combine several of these “beliefs” in the same purchases after slavishly following a couple of influencers for a while there. That is, I bought “classics” that aren’t really mine, in colours that didn’t suit me and styles that did not work for my actual life! When I went back to trusting my instincts, my wardrobe started to mirror my own unique style and actually work for me.
Oh my gosh, yes to all of this! All of your advice is spot on. (Please do a part 2!) I've searched for and purchased a number of so-called "classics" over the years that didn't last in my wardrobe (dark-wash jeans, knee-high boots, crisp white button-down, etc.). I've also gotten staple vs. basic confused--especially when I first started my minimalism/slow fashion journey. I got really caught up in making sure that everything in my wardrobe was interchangeable and that I had all the basics--which, on the one hand was good, because I learned how to look at my wardrobe as a whole and make sure I had enough on hand to make a variety of outfits. BUT. I ended up with a wardrobe that I was eventually *super* bored with. I still have many basics, but it turns out that my actual staples are things like puff-shoulder or balloon-sleeve blouses, super chunky grandma-esque cardigans, high-waist wide-leg trousers, boxy/cropped tops, etc. And yes, I too have just swallowed influencer advice wholesale. It took me an embarrassingly long time to realize that the advice of influencers who live in sunny California on wardrobe "must-haves" are not going to work for me. (I live in Ohio! I can wear a lightweight jacket, let's see...approximately 2 weeks out of the year. So it doesn't make sense for me to have a collection of those jackets, no matter how cool they might look as a "third piece.")
What???? This video is over??? I was glued to it! Hanging on every word! I am new to the concept of “slow fashion” “ shopping my closet” and I am loving it! My budget thanks you, and my husband certainly thanks you! Yes, please, please make a part two!!
Honestly the idea of classics is just that an idea. I don't know why I got caught up in it though. I tried to do a white button up and I just wasted money. I have a leather jacket that is gorgeous and since I own it my goal is to style it up in a new way this fall as there is not point in something sitting and not being worn! I learned the hard way that just because I like the look of something doesn't mean it fits my lifestyle. Oh and can I just say your hair is gorgeous and giving me full lion mane vibes love it!
This was such a refreshing video--- particularly interesting because to me it solidifies your authentic perspective that shines through in your videos. Unlike so many influencers, your advice and suggestions always have impressed me as inviting consideration of pieces or looks that encourage seeing the potential in putting together pieces that are multi-functional, bring out who we are and lead us to feel inspired to find pieces/ looks that reflect our moods and constantly evolving selves. Would love to see a part 2!
One thing I would really enjoy is a video or video series about color. Color combinations, color tones, saturation, etc. Sometimes I struggle with mixing & matching because of uncertainty about color combos and what is right for me.
When I started using my "special occasion pants" for everyday life, with sneakers and a t-shirt, a whole new world of possibilities opened for me. Definitely my favourite tip from this video, but all of them are absolutely great! Thank you for all you content, always super helpful and interesting :)
These are very freeing concepts and distinctions. You are confirming some ideas that have been forming for me. So many "classic" style pieces just don't work for my body shape, lifestyle, and aesthetic. Believe me, I have tried. I can't do button down shirts, white, or blazers. I need stretch and knit pieces as well as patterns rather than all solids for comfort, to hide stains, and flatter curves. Your advice is building my confidence and helping me be true to myself. It's such a relief hearing that experimentation and mistakes are part of learning. Thank you!
Welcome back, so good to see you. Wise words as ever, I live in the country and will no longer work in the city as much, we've moved to a hybrid WFH model. I'm in the process of evaluating how much of my "city" wardrobe I can part company with; I'm sure I'm not the only one? How has lock-down changed our relationships with our clothes? As you say, Alyssa, everything in life moves on.
I’m finally getting rid of my excess “office” wardrobe now that I only go to the office about once a month. Realistically I still have plenty of clothes that are work-appropriate, so even if we did go back full time I would probably be just fine, but I’d been doing office dress for so long that I was scared to let them go before now.
Yes to Part 2. You are SO right about those classics-I now try to figure out what MY classics are. With your help, I am succeeding! When you copy looks, it encourages me to do so with MY clothes. Looking forward to seeing you on the 25th!
🤣🤣🤣🤣 your mean girls reference is amazing. Your first tip is such a good reminder! I feel like my wardrobe is inadequate often because I’m searching online for the “perfect” wardrobe. Your second tip about “classic” pieces is also such a good point! A lot of classic items are black, and I personally don’t enjoy wearing black, especially on the top of my body. A classic item for me is a denim jacket. I have several different styles and washes and they are always a go to layering piece for me. I’d like to see an entire video on basics vs. staples. This is my favorite video that I’ve watched on your channel. Such simple and good reminders that I needed! 💜
Hola! So happy you are back! Please do a Staples vs Classics Video. When you mentioned it and I thought about it , I really do struggle differentiating between both. Help!
I am so relieved to know that I don't have to buy a classic black Moto jacket. I have tried on so many and never bought one because I am just not comfortable in it. However I have tried again with button down shirts because having a larger bust, they always bulge at that point, so I gave up with them. And then I found a pre-loved Desigual shirt which I absolutely love wearing. I have never striven for perfection but I do enjoy creating my own style and shopping my or thrift shop closets. 😊
Totally know what you mean! I gave up on moto too for the same reason and found a short, relaxed military style Boden jacket that's now one of my classics.
I just adore your style, your advice is always so USEFUL and it is NOT based on purchasing/recommending new items all the time. It is perfect even for people, who don’t have the means to always buy new or follow trends, but just want to tweek their closet and look at new ways to wear, what they already have. Quality videos!👌🏻🙌🏻☺️
A staple is a mechanism that secures two or more items together. Therefore, a wardrobe staple is that quintessential piece that you use to anchor your outfit(s). Alyssa, I have been a subscriber for some time now. I really admire your sense of style and enjoy the creative content that you bring us. My style is very different from yours but I always learn something new. You have helped me define my true style and determine what works for me. Thank you!
WELCOME BACK! I have my ticket to your event...I purchased it the moment you announced it...a few months back. I would not miss a single one! Love this video and who has not fallen victim to THE WARDROBE LIST??? I certainly have. Yet, most of those items slowly made their way to consignment shops or were donated to the poor. (the black leather MOTO is still in my closet. I do love it and promise I will wear it on a cool sunny day this Autumn). I purchased it a few years ago and just love the soft leather. This video really focused on an trap that many women have fallen into when they have a career change, weight change, life change and want to revamp their style, image or closet...THE LIST! If I had known at the beginning that these "WARDROBE CLASSICS" that will be handed down to your great grandchildren ended up creating another version of a uniform...that blended in to the crowds. Perhaps, that is what someone wants, but it ended up creating wardrobe boredom that then developed into over-shopping for those items that were more to my liking. UGH. I have also fallen into the "INFLUENCER" trap. I will not mention those influencers, but when I found that within a year they were holding up those MUST HAVE items that we all ran to get...as their "FASHION MISTAKES" it was a real wake-up call for me. I still wore and enjoyed the items that were identified as their "FASHION MISTAKES" and attributed it to their changing style. However, it did give me that "A...HA moment" that awakened me to the BUSINESS of INFLUENCERS. I have unfollowed most all of them. It is your channel (and a couple of others with similar content) that I still follow. YES...to the Basic vs STAPLE videos PART II and PART III. Also, those statement pieces...not just accessories...that really enliven a wardrobe. Perhaps, something in a colorful pattern...but a classic shape. A statement sleeve...or two! A neckline style that is interesting. Those dressmaker details that elevate an outfit...or embroidery.... A leather culotte or a bright color!
Thank you so much for sharing Lisa!! It is so easy to fall into the influencer trap - myself included! Loved your examples of your staples - so fun! And thank you for supporting the event it is a pleasure to have you! xx
Thank you so much for your videos I live in Minnesota with a climate much like Canada. Because of our 4 different seasons (which I love) we have to have everything from heavy coats and sweaters to tank tops and shorts with everything in between. It seems like I can accumulate so much. Your advice is helping me to pair down (not an easy task) but I'm working on it. Thanks again for the good videos!
You must feel good "joy" in the "classic" for it to be your own "classic". We try too hard to fit in the a mold that is harden, but the human mold is organic, living & breathing, always moving. Your defining the difference between a Basic and a Staple is spot on. The two have been muddled for most of us. My Staple understanding, it is when you put on that pair of shoes and you "feel" like a million bucks! Taking a break out from behind the computer, venturing into nature, the organic world, helps to open ones eyes & appreciate the ever-changing world, feeling grateful for the differences, and embracing your own individuality with the appreciation of self. Our "Mold" is organic and that is a good thing! Thank you Alyssa, for giving life to fashion and hopefully opening the eye to your subscribers for a more joyful, style journey experience.
Hey Alyssa! Good to see you! Love the look of your hair with some volume and curl! Pretty! Yes, I would love to hear more about staples vs. basics with visuals. Thank you!
Yes please to a part 2 and to basic vs. staple. I learned long ago that the list of classics that every woman must have were not for me. However, I love reading those lists to see what function the “must-haves” serve, then checking my closet to see if that function is met.
I am so glad you posted this. Plain White T Shirts are a “Classic” that are just not for me. Luckily they ended up being great dust rags. Expensive dust rags but oh well. Learning that you need basics that fit you and your lifestyle instead of someone else, has needed to be said. Thank you.
Thank you for pointing out the difference between staple and basic. I feel like all these "the wardrobe staples everyone needs" are just a a bunch of basics and classics without any personality. They would never satisfy me. I love my black rollnecks but my wardrobe is truly mine because of all sorts of colorful silk blouses and unique blazers/jackets/cardigans. And the best thing is you can get them in awesome quality for a few dollars 2nd hand :D
You are the first stylist which I have come across who gives tips to your audience advising they reframe the information you present and apply it to their own body/image/lifestyle.
Welcome back!!!! LOVED this vodeo!!!!! Yes please do a part 2! Basics and staples would be great as well!!! You give such thoughtful information and viewpoint. You never disappoint!!!
So true about the leather jacket! I purchased a few over the years and even though I do have a more edgy, dark style, I still never wore it! I realized I was afraid of wrecking the leather with smoke smells, or spilling on it, and I also just didn’t like the squeak factor! I ended up getting a jacket in a similar shape, but in twill, and I’ve worn that one way more!
Really appreciating that you brought up the classic issue. Not all classics actually fit me/my style. Especially the black cardigan which has always looked out of place on me and brings on hardcore granny vibes 😉 Structured pices like blazers work so much better. I have spend much money trying to find a cardigan that looked good on me. Last year I gave up and donated the last two that had been in my wardrobe. Don’t miss them and feeling freer
Looking forward to the event! Loved all these points. Particularly the classics issue. It’s so true that we get caught up in these lists of must haves that often don’t suit our style, personality or lifestyle!!
Just now finding this in January 2024 and I just want to say a big thank you for these words! I’m new to the sustainable fashion and I have been going crazy & somewhat broke chasing after the perfect wardrobe! You are a breath of fresh air in all that chaos. Thank you!
Sending you some love, as always, from the Rocky Mountains. Your 'creativity over consumption' focus for fashion resonates with my approach on so many other areas of art and life.
What a great, well-thought-out video, Alyssa; thank you!!! I particularly loved mixing clothing used for a specific occasion into a completely different occasion, which is new notionto me! Anyway, this time I'm doing the class and not really sure how to sign - help!

Yes to a part two, please, Alyssa! Thanks for yet another delightful and practical video. Button down shirts only work for me over a tank, dress, etc., not buttoned up. On weekends I have paired a baseball cap woth a sweet summery maxi dress and sandals/slides/flip flops. 😁🌞❤️☕
Never had a "classic" moto jacket instead opted for a short leather jacket like cardigan/zippered with knitted sleeves/cuffs. Suits me and my life-style. I do fall for the perfect static trap look--frustrated when sleeves don't roll up, jeans don't cuff-grrr... Great reminder! Yes to a part 2 basic/staple. Thank you Alyssa for your thoughtful insights
As I watch you in your "basics," white tee and jeans, I'm thinking...I don't see the clothing as much as I see Alyssa and her beautiful face and hair! Yes to part 2.
Yes to part two! And the info on staples vs. basics is much needed. You are the best! Love your teaching style and information. Easy to absorb and try.
Alyssa I want to say a BIG THANK YOU TO YOU. In the past year I move to other country and there was a complete dissaster. All of the bad things that could imagine it happend to me. Fortunatley now I came back to my country and I am really happy. But during that tough months i watched yours videos and at least for 10 ten I escaped for this situation. For this reason I am very grateful to you. In the videos you mention that you talks about slow fashion, let me say that are so far much than this description. They give a lot of happines and accompaniship that you coun't image. You have always a smile to share that can shine even the other part of world and the most tough days.
Thank you so much for your perspective! I am on a weight loss journey and have promised myself to book a styling appointment with you once I’ve made significant progress. I look forward to working with you and finding my own personal style!
I can't tell you how many times I've purchased the wardrobe classics only to years down the road realize that I just don't like how they look on me and that's why I never wear them. Your example of the simple black cardigan is a perfect example...I really hate cardigans ha ha! So glad you are back this week!
Great video Alyssa - very insightful and refreshing content. I resonate with everything you're saying, both on a personal level and having seen it in my own clients. Your final point about expecting outfits to look perfectly styled at all times struck a particular chord. I'd be really interested for you to continue with a Part 2 on this topic. P.S. Hope you enjoyed your break x
What a wonderful informative video. Thank you. I have lived in that static perfection world. You have made me feel so much better about my clothing and dress sense. I had thought maybe it was me. It isn't. x
I love that you truly practice what you preach. I’ve been following for awhile now and I see your closest on repeat and your style is always evolving. So much of what’s out there is hauls 🤦♀️from fast fashion
Every video I love! But your Style lookbooks and Pinterest ones are my absolute favorite….. I pause the videos and run to my closet to see what I have with you❤️
It's so true... In autumn/winter I don't wear blue jeans (only black and not so often), blazers or snickers but I wear almost every day midi skirts and dresses, wool turtlenecks or sweaters, black, good quality thights are a must for me and long coats or warm, long jacket for winter. I'm not putting aside my best clothes for special occasion, I wear them every day and it's what makes me happy. Everyone have their own style so we should wear what's best for us ♥️
I think this may be my favourite video out of your collection so far! So much excellent advice and wonderful food for thought. I hope you do end up making a part 2 - I would love to hear whatever else you have to say on this topic
Awesome video, you did it again…to make me reflect about my closet and my clothes. I have a staple, a long burnt orange shantung bias cut slip dress with some old indian embroidery around the neck. So beautiful and makes me feel like a queen. And then I have a basic,: a long bias cut silk slip dress in a solid color like black, or green or teal.
These two videos-I've watched them multiple times to reexamine my own closet issues- have truly got me on the right closet path with the inspiration needed🌟🐥
...and to give feedback as well as praise: the classics issue(what is my own feel-good-look-good classics), new pieces together with older pieces, finding your own 🌟-words that convey what you want to look and feel like. And from other videos: what can we learn from styles that work(I gravitate both british whimsy/street and Italian sexy/elegant depending on mood, live in Sweden so cold weather and comfortable/ good looking shoes are important. Love your analysis! Love the winter issues! 🌟❤🌟
Yes, to a basics and staples video. Ballet shoes are my nemesis. Have bought so many pairs but rarely wore them cause my arch is so high the shoes would always fall off. Now, I focus on loafers which I can't get enough of cause the comfort and fit is perfect. BTW your hair is exceptional today. It was a well deserved vacation.
Valid + REAL points you make. Please do make another video (part 2) and I’d also be interested in watching your take on the difference between ‘staples’ and ‘basics’. 🌸
This sort of content to me at this time is very neccessary. I love to make my own clothes and with social media I got caught up easily in certain ''beliefs'' which has let to nothing but frustration and not getting why. So thank you for sharing it really helps!
What a perfect and timely video. Yes, to a Part II, please! I remember listening to a former model giving a TED talk, regarding the same ideas of perfection. She said, “remember when you look at a cover or a fashion shoot, that this was someone’s “project”. They spent 3-4 HOURS getting every single piece styled, groomed, ready for that one shot”. It gave me perspective. It’s completely unfair and unrealistic that we are bombarded with these images and ideals and then we internalize them and expect ourselves to pull off the perfect body, perfect look, etc, amidst the chaos of our daily lives. Thank you. So appreciate you. 🙏💕✨
Great video Alyssa, definitely follow this up whit part 2. Maybe give more examples on things that we bought because it was a " new classic" and we never wore. Beige and tan are good examples for me. Though I learned that lesson long ago. Many people wear these colours even when it drains them.
Oh wow I just fully fell in love with you just from the first point you made re: our lives change, our bodies change - the perfect closet does not exist. Yesss, thank you, such a good point! Subscribed. I have a feeling I'm going to enjoy your videos and learn a lot from them.
Loved this content. Clarifies spending money on clothes that don’t suit my lifestyle or my body. Reconsidering my collection of dresses for tango dancing which I haven’t been able to wear for a year and a half bc of COVID shutdowns. Also I want everything to be super comfortable and I’ve gained a few pounds and certain shorts and pants aren’t comfortable. As a petite woman the high rise pant and shorts which is becoming so popular is super uncomfortable when I sit so they’re leaving my closet or have left already. Please do a part two to this video. Welcome back!!💕💕💕
The concept of having your own classics and not just everyone's classics was just brilliant
Yes, yes, Alyssa: a video on closet basics vs. staples!
Ok Christina! On it! xx

yes! Great idea to dye the colours that didn't work! Thank you for watching! xx
I was always told you need a red purse or red was classic so I needed red pieces. Fuscia or magenta is my "red".

Yes, I would love a part 2 with some visual examples of mixing it up!
Ok! Thanks Elizabeth!
Elizabeth, I agree with you. This was such a refreshing video.A touch of reality. 2nd part would be fabulous. Please Alyssa! 😊
So happy you are back from your break. Please do a Classic VS Staples
Thank you! Happy to be back - part 2 coming!
Yes, for part II
Thank you for this. I am coming to the realization that just because something is trending or is a “classic “ doesn’t mean it’s in my comfort zone. I love the look of blazers and jackets, but always end up taking them off because I feel constricted. Give me a comfy cardigan any day.
Glad it resonated! xx
I love this!!! Gonna give it a go!
'style uniform' - I love that!
haha love that - operation discover my own classics! Enjoy it! It's definitely a fun process :)
Yeeesssss!
@@susie9893 Love to hear what your style uniform consists of. I think mine is just jeans and tees or interesting tops. Tank dresses with blazers for dress-up.
Glad you took a break. You look happy and rested☺️
Thank you Joan!
I love that Kimberly - I hope you are feeling good in your clothes and getting more wear out of them! xx
I know the feeling.
E.v.e.r.y summer I feel that I shouldget into Daisy Dukes and flowy bohemien dresses and tall boots;
Well I'm middle aged and I've had cellulite from my butt to my knees since I was 16.
I look like I'm trying to save myself from a mile of bubblewrap while stepping on it and slipping like it was a banana peel 🤣
Long boots? I spend 14 years as an athlete, on a court running, jumping, stopping dead track and hurling around in the opposite direction at a second interval. I've got legs like a horses thighs and wear a size 3 shoe. It's not gonna happen.
Yet, I've bought God knows how many distressed Daisy Dukes, bohemian dresses and long boots. I cant even get a rain boot above my ancle to fit 🙄
But that is all summer things that you HAVE to have.
You are so right about " classics ", they are different for different people.xx
absolutely! Thanks for sharing Suzie! xx
Yes, please, please make a part two!!
ooh yay i'm so glad you liked it! I had a long list so will continue! xx
Oh yes - we all get caught up in it! Thak you for sharing and thanks for the compliment on the hair! That's what I was going for! :)
Hi Deborah! Thank you for the kind and thoughtful words, I really appreciate it! I'm glad this idea resonates with you!
Part II? Yes please!!
Thank you!
YES - they really are. Eventually we make less mistakes but i think it's a part of evolving style :) Thank you for sharing! xx
@@AlyssaBeltempo Thank you!!!
I'm sure you're not the only one - I think we're all changing what we wear and how!
@@AlyssaBeltempo but...I loved getting dressed up. It felt so special and now everyone is so casual. I want that to come back.
Love this! Change! I even find some clothing items from 1 or 2 years ago don’t suit me anymore, that’s change and it’s wonderfully cool
I'm so glad you are joining uson the 25th Kathy! It will be fun :) Thank you as always for your support!
Yes please, we would love a whole video on basics versus staples! And also yes please to a part 2 of this video.
Welcome back, you've been missed! I am all for that video on basics vs staples. I love what you said about defining your own classic 💡
thank you so much wRen! I'm glad this resonated with you! xx
My Sunday's are complete again! Welcome back! I hope you had rest during your time off.
Hola!
So happy you are back!
Please do a Staples vs Classics
Video. When you mentioned it and I thought about it , I really do struggle differentiating between both. Help!
Will do! :)
That was excellent, Alyssa. Thanks for busting those closet myths. Please do make a vlog about the difference between basics and staples.
So glad you liked it Taquiena! xx
Also busty and struggle to find a button up that doesn’t gap. Just realized that I could get a white pullover blouse instead so the hunt is on.
@@kellypicard7927 , good luck!
“Define your own classics” … Thank you for this! By the way, your hair is beautiful!!!
Welcome back. Yes would love a part 2
Very thoughtful and useful content in this video. I’d love a part 2. Thank you 🙏
A staple is a mechanism that secures two or more items together.
A leather culotte! I love that idea.
Your hair is fabulous! Great video - would love more like this. I even took notes!
I like your reminder that real life is movement and not a static pose. My linen shirts wrinkle like mad but I love them and how I feel in them!
Hey Alyssa! Good to see you! Love the look of your hair with some volume and curl! Pretty! Yes, I would love to hear more about staples vs. basics with visuals. Thank you!
Great topic. I've gotten caught up in the "classics" trap too. I would love a part 2 to this video.
We all have! :) Thank you for watching! xx
You never disappoint!!!
ooh yay i'm so glad you liked it Mary! Thank you for watching! xx
You are so right! The idea that the perfect wardrobe doesn’t exist is realistic and liberating. A wardrobe evolves as we do.
Welcome back!!! Great vídeo. Staple X Basic is a good idea💐💖
I subscribed to your channel yesterday through a comment made on Audrey Coyne's channel, you guys speak the same truths and for this I'm grateful.
Looking forward to the event! Loved all these points. Particularly the classics issue. It’s so true that we get caught up in these lists of must haves that often don’t suit our style, personality or lifestyle!!
yay! I'm so excited you are coming Jennifer! It will be great to have you! xx
Well ya gotta use your own common sense and not be influenced by influencers! This video is refreshing
Your 'creativity over consumption' focus for fashion resonates with my approach on so many other areas of art and life.
yay! I'm so glad it is still resonating with you Pamela .. more often I find it applies to all areas of life! xx

Yes, part 2 please. Always inspired to see what I have rather than see what I need.
Yes to part two! Please, when there is text on the screen, give us a few more seconds to read it. 😉
Very good viewpoint, learned something new.
Well done, we must all be kinder to ourselves and think outside the box
I love this content. Today went shopping and found my version of basic and staples and so excited about the purchase.
Good morning Alyssa! Interesting points! Yes, I would love a part 2!! Nice to see you back!!
Thank you so much for your perspective! I am on a weight loss journey and have promised myself to book a styling appointment with you once I’ve made significant progress. I look forward to working with you and finding my own personal style!
Love, love, love, thank you so much! Glad you had a long break and good to have you back. ❤️🌻
I can't tell you how many times I've purchased the wardrobe classics only to years down the road realize that I just don't like how they look on me and that's why I never wear them. Your example of the simple black cardigan is a perfect example...I really hate cardigans ha ha! So glad you are back this week!
Yes please that would be incredibly helpful to have a staples v basics . Love the channel ❤️💐
“Amen” to all of the points you made in this video, Alyssa. I think you could easily create a part 2 and continue the discussion.
Basic vs staples : YES! Such an interesting difference, I'm here for it!
yay! Glad you find that interesting! xx
Yes to a part 2! All so true and I especially relate to the ‘static image’ point!
ahhh me too! Thanks for watching Heidi!
Yes to a part two, and yes to a basics vs staples!
Of course Alyssa we want a part 2! So glad you had a nice time off/vacation and happy to see tou again for fall fashion💖
I'm so glad you enjoyed the video - esp that last point ... it's easy to get bogged down by perfect! xx
Yes please to the basic vs. classic as well as a part two of the video. Thanks for your efforts!
Wonderful vid! Simple, honest and raw info, we all should know and or try to adopt. What to go! Part 2 is most welcome. Thank you❤️
Every video I love!
Great video that makes an excellent distinction between classics and staples, and reminds us that these may be different for each of us.
Yes please! I struggle on this new journey between staples and classics. 🙏🏼
Yes to part 2 and yes to a video on basics vs staples.
Welcome back! So good to start my Sunday with you. Excellent video.
Valid + REAL points you make. Please do make another video (part 2) and I’d also be interested in watching your take on the difference between ‘staples’ and ‘basics’. 🌸
Thank you for being some of the few who truly encourage creativity and not consumption!
Welcome back Alyssa and thanks again for a very eye opening video. I am in for another basic versus staple video. Thank you! Much love!
What a great video!! Welcome back! Yes, I would very much like to see a video explaining the difference between basics and staples.
This sort of content to me at this time is very neccessary. I love to make my own clothes and with social media I got caught up easily in certain ''beliefs'' which has let to nothing but frustration and not getting why. So thank you for sharing it really helps!
I'm so glad this is well timed for you. It's so easy to lose our way. Congratulations on making your own clothes that is AMAZING! xx
Welcome back!!💕💕💕
Part II, yes please!!!
Will do Elena! xx
